32-0-1 all KO’s before Salvador Sanchez KO’ed him, a streak that will probably never be broken
He was a dirty fighter. He was hitting after the bell vs Carlos Zarate and even kept on punching after Zarate was down SEVERAL TIMES! He should've been disqualified in that match instead of given the win. The ref in that fight should've just watched the fight from home. What an embarrassment. When Sanchez finally KOed him it was so satisfying. So satisfying 🤌
@@jovanleon7 no need to post it twice bro
@@decidingpaper6324That's a bug on UA-cam, posting something double when the internet is slow
Just a hater I guess.
I will see him vs Salvador should be interesting
I was just thinking about Wilfredo Gomez in a fantasy matchup against Naoya Inoue at 122.
That would be such a fun fight! Who do you see winning that one?
@@TheModernMartialArtist Holy cow! I’m speaking to the legend himself! I was thinking Gomez, but Inoue can easily reverse it.
I think I see Inoue struggling way more than he expects to but taking it after a challenging start. But maybe AI will actually progress to the point where we could watch a close approximation of these fantasy matchups one day, like the bogus Ali vs Rocky "computer fight" but actually based on AI studying the footage. Would be really really cool.
@@TheModernMartialArtist That’s a really cool concept. Yeah, these days computers are advanced enough to make a lot of things work. I feel like as you said it, Inoue would take 2-3 rounds to study Gomez. Kinda like Crawford letting Porter take some of the early rounds. And once Inoue gets his timing right he’ll pick apart Gomez and get him maybe in the 9th-11th round after a difficult time, with Gomez having scary moments where he almost take Inoue out. Boxing improves and techniques and conditioning are getting better nowadays. I think many fights would be different if boxing brings back 15 rounds over 12 rounds.
I'll take Inoue by late KO. Gomez was a fighter with good boxing skills always coming forward while Inoue is far more versatile changing his style to suit the opponent while possessing power equal to Gomez. When a fighter could take Gomes' punches and impose their will on him he could be beaten. This is what Salvatore Sanchez and Azumah Nelson did to KO Gomez. A great fight to watch is the Sanchez vs Nelson fight where Nelson gave Sanchez the toughest fight of his career before being stopped in the 15th round.
I’m glad Gomez got a breakdown. Some boxers like him, Duran, Tyson, deserve breakdowns because their boxing styles are unique to them.
I've been waiting for this 1 hopefully he also does a breakdown on Carlos Monzon
I think the reasoning why there isn't as much Shoe Shining in modern boxing is most boxers are actually grappling one or both of the arms of the opponent, rather than the head as you see in the Shoe Shine examples you showed. Duran's grappling essentially became boxing clinching 101 from then on
Good points. Yeah there's a number of reasons, and now good fighters look to punish the clinch as their opponent tries to establish it in the first place too. But still, I wish it made a come back!
You're 100% right on. You still use it in amateurs where clinching and holding aren't allowed.
Thanks for the videos. I'm a 46 year old active boxer, and I always learns something new from these
At 44, me too.
the way he picked his opponent up more than once after KO'ing him shows the honour of the man, what a class act warrior.
Dude was sliding not walking his movement is money
The way this guy moves it's always active and calculated, he had the sweetness and the science down to a t
I was thinking about Salvador Sanchez when you said master of sweet science. But Wilfredo Gomez was much more than a puncher. People only remember him for his defeat by the hands of Salvador Sanchez. He was more.
Not his fault Sanchez was also a gifted boxer. It was literally best vs best for that fight, and the better man won. I say that as a Puerto Rican. Bitter loss? Yes. But it was an earned win
I'm definitely going to be covering that fight soon! Part of why I made the Gomez video now. Gomez actually gave him a fight for a while there, a good fight. I think that was coming back from a knockdown too if I'm remembering right.
@TheModernMartialArtist got dropped 40 seconds into the 1st, proceeded to beat the hell out of Sanchez from rounds 3 through 7, but was taking a lot of damage himself. His eyes were swollen shut by the 8th and that's what got him TKO'd.
Only those that are pro Sanchez are quick to make that call, but anyone that knows about the totality of Gomez's career realize that he was the real deal. How many Mexicans he brutalized like a dozen of them? He just lost to one and Sanchez was still relatively obscured before he beat Gomez.
Dont forget Azumah Nelson
Underrated defense that fits his striking style perfectly
He was a dirty fighter. His ko against Carlos Zarate should be a straight up disqualification. He was hitting after the bell and even hitting after he downed Zarate SEVERAL TIMES! The ref in that fight should've just watched that fight from home. When Sanchez KOed him it was so satisfying. So satisfying 🤌
Bro, that's like the 5th time I've seen you post the EXACT same comment. Find something new to talk about@@jovanleon7
Can we get a Hector Camacho Style Analysis?
Pre Rosario cause after that he became a runner 😂
hell yeah i didnt even know about this fighter but because of this video hes one of my new top 5ers
amazing work as always david, you should check gustavo ballas he was trained by locche's trainer francisco paco bermudez
Marty Jakubowski- had quite a run before getting stopped by JCC- insane footwork and speed
This footage looks like a dramatized version of boxing from the 80's. It's awesome.
Ive been watching Wilfredo Gomez film for years. I remember hearing about him and getting interested. Long time an article popped up on the greatest Puerto Rican fighters. And I remember thinking isn't that the same guy who got torched by Sanchez? He cant be that good right? I mean... right!??
I'm 78 years old and remember these times well. Everybody thought Wilfredo was unbeatable until he was utterly destroyed by Salvator Sanchez in a totally one-sided fight. A case of a great fighter going against a greater, possibly the best, fighter ever.
Unfortunately Wilfredo wasn't on the right path at the time. I would have loved to see a rematch. Salvador's resume wasn't as much as Gomez. So only time would have showed if Salvador was really that great.
@@Acord718Sanchez also bested Azumah Nelson, who destroyed Gomez later.
i was just thinking like last week there's no video that goes over wilfredo's style
Wilfredo Own the SuperBatamweight division like no one else. He should have unified the Division
❤ thanks David. My favorite foot work is a cat va mouse fight between Ivan Calderon and Hugo Cáceres. The first fight is very dramatic. Highly recommended. Ivan does a great exhibition of foot work.
Hell, yes, I've been waiting for this one.
Thank you for sharing! This was awesome to watch.
Love me some Bazooka, that's for sure.
Gomez was certainly a very interesting, unique and brilliant fighter. Certainly underrated this day in age.
Most Puerto Rican fighters are.
@@Acord718 From what I can see 100% mate.
Dynamite in those hands!
I would like to see a video about Carlos Zarate as well
Another great knockout artist.
Beautifully made video as usual
Hey, David! A Breakdown of Roberto Duran's last title win would be awesome. Such a master class that is not often celebrated.
Against Barkley ? There is already one
His hook kinda looks like Marcianos
The best channel out there!
Great man in and out the ring 🥊👑
Woo! Gomez was the man!
Hey David,
I've noticed you've been lately doing underrated boxers styles and techniques. If you ever get the time, can you breakdown the underrated boxer Maromero Paez?
Great video, please do a masato breakdown next
To reply ıs reflexive and automatic. To respond requires thought and skill (Osho). 🙏🏼😊
Legendary stuff
that was honestly impressive asf... dude was shockingly good in those highlights...
Do a vídeo About Acelino Popó Freitas, most understand boxing Champion Imo
Yay! thanks!
I can't wait to see this guy against Salvador Sanchez! Thanks for adding one to the list🎉
Legendary Stuff
Never heard of this guy till this video! Actually a very entertaining fighter
Reminds me of Bivol's base with the footwork and lead hand activity.
Do Dmitry Bivol Please Especially before he fights Beterbiev. He perfected the Soviet Style and has some of the best Distance Control Ive ever seen. imo the best defensive boxer right now along with Shakur
The fight with Pintor was easily one of the best of all time
You should break down the fight between sal sanchez and wilfredo
Watching his head and body movement was insane. He looked almost like an anime character dodging all those punches
Just makes you appreciate Salvador Sanchez, and Azuma Nelson even more, that they were able to stop this guy before he stopped them.
Who knew Super Mario was a boxer?! No wonder why he could destroy a brick block was just one uppercut!
Please, more detailed Wilfredo Gomez breakdown 🙏
Great champion.
I really like Gomez. not only as a boxer because it is so easy to see his talent, his timing and his energy. However, her altruism is real, touching and sincere. Fights are fights, but the real person behind each fighter is often unclear, not so with Gomez.
Are your books ever available in print or just ebooks?
What’s the background music used during the 9-10th minute?
plzz...Style breakdown of Ednois Stevens 🥲
Can you upload a breakdown of kyoji horiguchi
Who's the guy in the yellow trunks who keeps showing up?
please do a vid on carlos zarate
Hey modern, hoping you can do a video on Ray Mancini
This man probably destroyed more neurons than he has 🤯
Bazooka Gomez fights exactly how I imagine Takamura would
9:56 😳
Wilfredo Gomez!🇵🇷🙌🏾👏🏾
Wilfredo seemed unbeatable. Then he faced Salvador and got destroyed. No shame there, as Sanchez was one of the all time greats.
FINALLY
Do George Foreman
He has a video on foreman, about 30 minutes long; The first 5 minutes or so are dedicated to breaking down his original style, he also goes into detail breaking down the changes he made when he came back.
But he has one and it’s not complete technique breakdown
Imagine how good Salvador Sanchez was
Does anyone remember a boxer who fought in the 1970's; a very pale Irish guy who had Native American ancestry, so he wore a full head dress as he got into the ring.
Danny Lopez
Danny Lopez
Danny Lopez
Thanks so much. I remember him from The Wide World of Sports but in the 70s. He seemed not to fight for rounds on end and then "woke up" and destroyed whomever was in front of him.@@jeffreyreyes6487
Juan Laporte is the best Puerto Rican champion of all time. Hands down. Real boxing people knows this.
He's among them, yes. But the general consensus is that Gomez is the Boriqua GOAT
Is he the one Gomez kicked the shit of! LMAO
Don't give up. Open a secondary channel.
His jab reminds me of Bruce Lee's straight lead.
Please do a Floyd Mayweather jr vs Manny Pacquiao breakdown please 🥺?.
If you want a snooze time nap in that terrible so called "FIGHT"
Poor hand speed in my opinion
"And then Sanchez..."
Style analysis for Adrien broner
now make a breakdown of Benitez (or you can’t do that)
How can you put wilder name in this great fighter video? Wilder is a complete bum that beat up bums.
He was dominating him anyway! Zarate was no match for him that night! Mexico got revenge with Sanchez anyway
@@peggymartinez-hg9lm Being dirty while dominating makes him more despicable! Shit human being.
This man was so good until he had to face arguably the greatest Mexican boxer ever.
People dont remember that Wilfredo took the fight never boxing at the new weight of 126 , it was the 1st one against a GREAT champion. 4 pounds is a huge difference in the fighting game it would ve been much closer if Gomez allowed himself a few warmup fights at 126 before fighting such a champ but $$$ is $$$ I guess
The background music is so annoying.
You're annoying. Stop complaining and go do something productive lmao Of all the things to complain about, music on a yt video. Wow buddy.
@@TheModernMartialArtist I like your content, you have interesting things to say, but the "music" sucks ass. It's annoying. Your videos were so much better before you decided you had "talent" in another area and decided to foist it upon us.
Exactly! I didnt even notice! Wow!@@TheModernMartialArtist
The best Puerto Rican boxer of all time was Carlos Ortiz and he wasn’t just the best Puerto Rican boxer ever one of the greatest lightweights ever up there with Duran
Bazooka was much better than Ortiz
Can u break down shanon gibbs
He’s strong like me 💪
