  • Marcus Rediker delivers his keynote address as Inouye chair on the power of history to foster democracy when written from the vantage point not of victors and oppressors but of rebels and the repressed.
    Marcus Rediker is a Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh. He earned his B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in history at the University of Pennsylvania. Rediker is also an award-winning author with works including The Slave Ship: A Human History and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, and the Anglo-American Maritime World, 1700-1750. Rediker was named the 2019 Dan & Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals.
