Paddy's DIY - How to open a locked or broken window handle
Another great instructional video brought to you by Paddy's DIY
In this video I'm going to show you my methods for opening two of the most common types of window handles found in Ireland and the UK.
Over the years there have been hundreds if not thousands of window handles made by different manufacturers. The majority can be locked by a key of some form or another.
Generally speaking, there are 3 main types of locking mechanisms used in window handles. There are two types of autolocking mechanisms and a deadlocking type. In this video i'm going to deal with the two types of autolocking locks.
Locking window handles are fitted to the vast majority of windows manufactured in Ireland and the UK. The operation of a locking window handle is simple. Push the button lock with your thumb to release the lock and turn the handle lever to open the window. When the handle is returned to the closed position, the window handle locks automatically. Sometimes the push button lock of the window handle can break stopping it from being released. Imitating the symptoms of a broken window espag lock.
How can I tell the difference between a broken window handle / locked window handle or a broken window espag lock.
It is easy to tell the difference, here is a quick guide:
A broken window handle lock: The button lock will push in, but will not release
A locked window handle: The button will not push in and will not release
A broken window espag lock: The window handle lock releases and the handle will turn, but the window will not open.
Depending on the type of locking mechanisms that are in your window handles. You will need an item / tool to open the locks. I'm going to show you what to use and the method to use to open each type.

Hey lovely people! Why not buy me a cup of coffee or a beer to say thanks. Click on the THANKS button above 👍☕🍺
Hope you got my thanks :)
And hope others do too. You're saving us all from ridiculous prices quoted by others.
Thanks, in the night I was in trouble cause I couldn't close the safety window, then I watched closed it
@Afrin Nahar excellent. Glad it helped
I will buy you a keg (kidding house from early 1900s) if you fix mine without breaking Paddy! Appreciate knowing it's not my cleaning skills we had really humid days windows look worse than ever! Thank you, God bless!!
Excellent, got my conservatory window lock unjammed and fully functional again. Thank you sir
Excellent 👍
Used a steel scraper and worked straight away. Brilliant video, thanks Paddy!
Excellent 👍 well done
As a pensioner with not a lot to spare this was magic. I had thought of using a Stanley knife or similar but seeing this gave me the confidence that trying wouldn't damage anything further. Stanley knife worked instantly. Thank you so much. My Anglian windows are only a few years old but the locks are crap and only half of them lock at all. Thanks again.
Glad it helped 👍
God bless you great sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏. I was smoking in my parents bathroom and the key to the window broke and it wouldn’t open. I panicked because obviously the whole place smelled like smoke and the bloody window was broken. Until you I found you sir i’ve honestly never been so relived. i hope all your dreams come true.
learnt my lesson and will never smoke again 😻🫡🫡
Glad it helped 👍
Thank you so much for your video demonstration. I was able to open my locked window handle myself and replaced it without calling someone in to do it. All it cost me was the replacement handle. Really appreciate it. Caroline
Music to my ears 👍 well done
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you! Got my window open in 90 seconds after I’d watched your video and found the right household items you recommended! Corner of the measuring tape buckle worked perfectly
Excellent well done 👍
Absolute lifesaver - did not fancy roasting in this room this weekend and you helped me get my window open in about 2 minutes. 👍
Excellent well done
I just want to say a massive thank you Paddy. My window has been stuck shut for months I thought the handle would have to be replaced. It’s getting really hot we’re in living and I just needed it open. Found your video and bomb it’s open. Thank you so much for the help 🤘
Music to my ears 👍
I am so relieved! Brilliant video, so well explained and demonstrated, with the sympathy and tone to get through to the most panicked householder. Thanks for getting my window open! (Hair clip on window with broken button)
I was going crazy not being able to open the children's bedroom window to cool off the room these hot summer nights. What an absolute God send your video has been. Thank you so much! I have liked and subscribed. 😊
Thank you kindly Diane 😊 glad it helped
I thanked you for the previous video, and I'll thank you again. The handle of the tape measurer worked for some of my windows, but the hair clip idea pointed me toward a strong, thin nail file I had that just popped the bathroom window open. Thanks!
Glad to help again 👍
You are Pure Genuis Paddy.A million thanks. The hair slide worked a treat.Unable to open window for 3 years!!!!
Excellent 👍 well done
Hair clip worked perfectly!
Wow, fantastic information, Paddy, loads of thanks. I think you've just solved the window issue I've had for ages. Will definitely try this.

Glad it helped 👍
Amazing, thank you! The key ring method finally did the trick for me. Thanks for explaining it so clearly.
Fantastic. I was worried the key ring method would be too difficult for some people. Great job 👍
This was so easy! I watched the video, went upstairs, found a hair clip - and opened the bathroom window! Thank you Paddy
Music to my ears. Glad it helped 👍
This man can fix stuff!❤
This was hugely beneficial. We got a price from a local company at £350 and after watching your video it was just £20 for the lock and a hacksaw. Thank you!!!
Happy days 👍 glad it saved you money
Thanks so much for this. My husband has been trying to open our bedroom window for weeks and it didn't budge, something just told me to go on UA-cam this evening as I was extremely hot. I took my daughter's hair clip and the window is open. I can't believe this. Thanks so so much
Fantastic. Well done 👏
Do you have to use the same procedure each time
You open the window.
Omg you've saved me! Iv been boiling in my room. It took 2 days. But I finally did it!!! I'm so grateful to you!
For those maybe struggling to fit something into the slot. Hair clip as paddy said. But I had to break mine to use the thin bit. That way it slides all the way through.
Thank you kindly opalk. Glad you got it sorted 👍
Window is finally closed after months of it being jammed in the partially open position - thank you so much Paddy.
Glad it helped 👍

THANK YOU, hair clip worked..lots of wiggling, swearing…but it worked!!
Excellent 👍 well done
👍👍👍.Thank you
Glad it helped 👍
Slight issue, I have the card through and the handle is still not going up anymore. I believe it’s something to do with the ‘sash’ I believe it’s called doesn’t move and is stuck on open while the handle is down🤔
All very well if it works, but on mine the piece that should retract could not be pushed back into its place.
There was only one way, my thin knife was all the way through the lock, I held button down and thumped the handle open as the broken bits fell out.
Hi Paddy's! Thanks for this awesome video. I'm in Dublin and might need your services. How do I contact you?
I'm afraid i don't venture to the big shmoke. I'm too busy with work locally, so i don't travel
@@PaddysDiy thanks anyway :)
Hi @PaddysDiY do you have a video on how to fix a sagging window? i recently replaced hinges and its catching ever so slightly so i've got to lift the window as i open it otherwise it gets stuck on the lip of the frame
Leave it with me for a little while, and I'll make a video 👍
@@PaddysDiy champion!
Another suggestion (selfish i'd admit!) is what to do when the hinge fixing point has failed and pulled out the surrounding UPVC - i've been told to just stick a longer screw into the frame, but wanted to see other options as well
Omg would you know how to fix the square socket that attaches itself to the handle? So say you take the handle off and the little square socket is broken? Can you fix that part?
If the square bar has broken off the handle, you need a new handle. You'll get one in most hardware shops for less than a tenner
Hi my lock is other way around. I try to put the card in and also a flat hair pin from thr side but as the latch wont move it quite hard i have spend more than an hour on this
Hi would this still work when the key button doesn't press in ?
In general yes, but it all depends on the type of locking mechanism that's in your handle. The different types are explained in the video
for the second type of lock, is there anything else i can use instead of the ring? cant seem to find any
A paper clip will work
@@PaddysDiy thanks! and by the way, most window locks can be opened by random keys around the house (from the keyhole), found out by myself
What about when the handle works but the window is jammed at the interlocking bits?
ua-cam.com/video/c8leMv6ibo4/v-deo.html
Paddy using a credit card to open the locking mechanism did the trick with my window handle that was stuck thanks
Excellent 👍 well done
Mine is made of bronze and the lock mechanism is into the top not bottom . So could not open
My window seal is stuck, not the lock just the rubber I think. How can I force it open?
Don't know what you mean I'm afraid
I don’t have a keyhole with mine 😭 ! I wish I could send you a video. I have a tilt and turn window/door that’s stuck in the mishandled position. However, the handle is what seems to be the issue. I’d be able to put it back into position, but the handle is lose and can spin around, but it locks when put in the lock position (downwards.).
You have a tilt and turn window by the sounds of it. One of the sections is broken, i would say. You'd need a window repair company. Not a diy job I'm afraid
I have the first type of handle that should be able to open with a hair clip only it seems to be broken in such a way that I can't get it open. I've tried several tool and angles. If I try pressing the button while I have my tool in there I can feel it pressing down on the tool. I think the axel that the catch rocks on is broken so its just staying in/forward and pressing the button just presses it in more! What can I do?
Could be the espag lock that's broken. Hard to know really without seeing it
@@PaddysDiy if the internal lock was broken or jammed I imagine that would mean I couldn't turn the handle, but I would think that would't effect the catch mechanism in the handle? In the videos you pull the tool down and the catch pops up and you can move it right down, yes? I can insert the tool from the side just below the axle but I can't move it down. It feels like it hits the catch but won't go any further. The other windows with the same style handle are the kind with the catch inside the handle, not the kind with the catch on the mounting.
@@adrianthoroughgood1191 I tried the hair grip technique and it wouldn’t move the catch. It felt like there was a broken part jammed in there. What it did do was just move it slightly, so with some firm pressure on the handle, the plastic catch (horrible cheap lock) snapped off and the handle moved freely. Totally broke the lock but still…
@@michaelamoore4330 in the end I used a small hacksaw to cut upwards from the bottom, to cut through the plastic catch. The gap wasn't quite big enough for the blade so I had to chew through the edge of the metal lock body a bit as well. I used plastic tape to cover the frame to stop abrasion. Managed to get the lock to open. Now it opens and closes and operates the lock mechanism fine, just without the ability to lock with a key.
Mine was an auto lock, but the bolt was completely jammed and wouldn’t retract at all, so your trick wouldn’t work for me. I ended up bashing it with a masonry chisel to get the handle to swing open. I also tried a multi tool that has oscillating blades, but the blade wasn’t strong enough to cut the bolt (it just wore down the teeth of the blade). If your in my situation you need some heavy tools to get the handle off. I’m sure an angle grinder would have worked but I don’t own one.
My window handle is stuck in the open position, any ideas on what to do please.
I'd say it's most likely the espag lock is broken
unscrew off and replace unit.
Tried all and none worked(:.Found the key in the end . Great video though.
I have a different type of handle than those shown. Pitty I can't upload a photo or two here in this comment to show you. The handle just has what looks like a bolt, or pin going through it. The lock has broken completely and fallen out exposing the interior parts of the handle. There doesnt apear to be a catch of any kind to wedge a hairpin or anything into. There is another window like it in the house that does open. I have looked at this one, but there doesnt apear to be a little latch I can slide anything under to bypass the lock. It is on a tilt and turn window if that helps.
Other than that all I could do is maybe email some photos of the lock and handle?
You have the deadlocking type handle. They can't be bypassed. If the lock has fallen out of the handle you might as well go the whole hog and cut the pin. Use a hacksaw or junior hacksaw blade to cut it. The handle will open then.
Thanks very mutch. Do you have a how to video on this? @@PaddysDiy
I have a handle that I cant get open. It is the type that is easily opened with a credit card and in fact this broken handle is a replacement which I did few years ago. But now no matter what I use i cant get it open. Baffled!
The espag lock could be broken. Is the handle moving at all?
Who else glanced at the tab and thought they had 37 notifications?
Thanks!
