I couldn’t open the window, it was stuck, jammed and seized shut. The window handle moved, but the window just won’t open?
Description:
When you close the window, the handle gearbox pushes shootbolts (espag or espagnolette) and roller cams (mushrooms) out to lock the window in the outermost corners.
uPVC Window Lock Faults:
The window handle gearbox can break (which is often the case), or the shoot bolt (espag or espagnolette) and roller cams (mushrooms) jam or seize. When the gearbox breaks, it doesn’t allow the shoot bolts and the roller cams to return to the open position and the window won’t open.

I came across your video after our utility room window has been stuck for a year or more. I had to hold the allen key in a pair of vice grips, and then gently tap them with a hammer, but it worked like a charm. The shoot bolt mechanism seems to have come adrift from the handle on that side, so I have a bit more work to do, but the window is now opening, and will lock in the latched ajar position without jamming again. Thank you!

Hi, the first thing to do is find out which parts have caused the issue. Check which parts move and which don't (where appropriate, that parts move in both directions). Then it should be a straight forward job of replacing the parts. The parts are often fixed in place with screws, but can be pop riveted. In which case the pop rivets will need to be drilled out. If you're lucky, it will be a downstairs window. But if it's an upstairs, then you may need access from the outside. Lots more detail on how to repair and replace, can be found here:

@@doitup Thanks mate, really helpful and sorted it by unscrewing the lock and sliding mechanism - I then adjusted the mushroom enought that it doesnt catch by reducing the screwout and its working fine now. I wouldve done a video but it was tough as an upper window!

Hi, you could try removing the glass. This would allow the frame to flex a little more. However, be careful, as the plastic welds to the window frame could crack (if they've not been welded very well). If It's an upstairs window, please be very careful and follow the relevant safety guidance. It's very easy to fall off a ladder, or fall out and open window!

Hi, try practicing on a window that opens (with the same mechanism) on the ground floor. It may help you work out what you need to do 😀. You may need to have the window handle in the open position? Please be careful though, it's very easy to fall out of an open window. hopefully you'll be able to get the window open soon... 👍

Hi, it depends on the fault. You need to check the operation of the window handle and it's locking mechanism. If any of it's not working, the window may not be able to be closed, or it could fail again on opening. If this is the case, you can often remove the faulty part and still open and close the window (without it failing) whilst you await parts. However, you may need access to the window from the outside to safely remove the defective part(s)? Dependant on how easy it was to open (and the fault), you can often close the window after manually resetting the failed parts, (sliding them into the open position), and reopen the window using the method in the video, (when you have the new parts). Please be careful, it's very easy to fall out of an open window. I hope you get it fixed soon... 😃
I used a bent tent peg!! My locks were set much further back than yours (on the outside edge, so about 1" back) and a allen key didn't reach.
But two days later, with a bent tent peg, a few attempts, and a lot of brute force, and I got it open! Probably a wire-coat-hanger would work too.

@@doitup Q: I have a window lock with a handle with 'play' in it. Can that be tightened?
I've not tried it, but it has crossed my mind? The handles are often a soft cast alloy and the components stretch and become loose with use (especially when you can't get the window open). The only method I can think off the top of my head is peening (gently hammering the surface in an attempt to deform and expand it to tighten up). You would have to remove the handle and try and expand the material where it's loose from behind. The trouble is you can end up damaging the visible outer surface of the handle whilst hammering (whilst trying to hold it), or you just can't get near the area to be tightened up (peened). The saving grace is if it fails, then they aren't too expensive to replace...
You can also use a small flat ended chisel (punch) to aid getting into tight spaces, but this sometimes just breaks bits of material off! As usual, any modifications at your own risk.

It was a while ago that I bought some handles, but they should be standard sizes. Off the top of my head, check the hole centers, and the shaft (spindle) size (length) that goes through the window gearbox. If you happen to have 'cockspur' handles (they have a bit sticking out that closes against a sloped wedge/striker plate), then you need to measure the height from the bottom of the spur to the base of the handle. If you're unsure of the shaft (spindle) length, or you can't get the size you want, the longer sizes can always be cut down to the correct size with a hacksaw.

Thank you so much, I managed to get the window open using your tip. I did have to approach it from outside (ground floor) as there were too many angles internally from the inside on my type of window and the bolt was nearer to outside too, an allan key from the outside worked a treat! However I can see the mechanism will need replacing as it only closes not opens. Many thanks for my temporary fix.

Nice video and really clear. Unfortunately I'm having a few issues getting the alan key to latch properly. It's a pvc bathroom window which is side hung The handle does operate correctly in that I can completely lock it. However when reopening only the top mechanisms are freed. The problem looks to be with the bottom shoot bolt or roller cam. I can get the alan key in fine and can twist it but it doesn't want to hook anything. Anything else I can try? Appreciate its hard to comment without seeing it. Cheers.

Hi, try looking at another window that has the same fittings (preferably on the ground floor). With the window open, see if you can practice opening it with the allen key? You may need to use a bent nail or similar if the alan keys not man enough, or won't reach. One of the problems is the window gearbox breaks (the gearbox is fitted next to the handle) and it no longer moves the shootbolt. If you're struggling to get the tool in there, the window frame will flex a bit more with the glass removed. However, I have seen the frame crack along the plastic welds where too much force has been used, or it wasn't welded properly in the first place. So be careful. When you get the window open, you may need to remove the shootbolt to be able to close the window again, whilst you get parts. If It's an upstairs window, please be careful. It's very easy to fall out!

This is a great video! However, after I open it is it possible to make it work like before? For example, after I manage to open the window can I put back the handle and be able to open and close without any trouble?
I'm guessing the gear box mechanism is broken. These are usually made of cast alloy and can be brittle. You will probably need to remove the handle and some of the screws holding the shoot bolts, to remove the gearbox. It's easily replaced (just screws). Please be careful if it's an upstairs window (don't fall out!). Don't take any unnecessary risks.
You can usually shut the window once you get it open, if you remove the shoot bolts (whilst you wait for parts). As the locking mechanism next to the handle will usually still work. The shoot bolts are usually held in place with screws (the top, bottom and opening side of the window), though they could be pop riveted. Standard parts are plentiful, and not too expensive, but you will have to measure the screw hole (and handle hole?) positions for the gearbox and the length of the shoot bolts (if these need replacing). I hope you get it fixed soon...

Is it true if you don’t open windows for a very long period of time they will become stiff to open?
Hi, thanks for your comment. It will depend on a number of factors...
It will come down to:
- The quality of the fittings.
- The environment the window is exposed to.
- If there is any protection on the mechanisms. Such as lubrication and prevention of water ingress.
- The temperature, (expansion and contraction).
- How well the window was adjusted/fitted when installed, etc.
There's never any harm in opening a window every so often, to see if it's still working well. If not, then some maintenance can be carried out as a prevention measure. If lubricating the windows mechanisms, use something like silicon grease, as this is less likely to stain the plastic like ordinary oil or grease. Plus it maybe a little more waterproof.
As usual, any work carried out at your own risk, and... Please be careful when working on a window. It's very easy to fall out! Hope this helps... 😃

Hi, unfortunately I don't have an easy solution. It sound like you've looked at another window to see how it works? That's usually the best method of trying to work out what you can do. You could also try removing the glass. This would allow the frame to flex a little more. However, be careful, as the plastic welds to the window frame could crack if they've not been done very well.
If you're really stuck, with the glass removed. You could drill through the frame making a small hole (where it won't be seen) and try and lever the mechanism to get it open, though this is a last resort. I've not tried this, so it's just a possibility? You would then have to fill the hole with some silicone (or similar). As usual at your own risk! Please be careful, as it's easy to fall out of an open window. I hope you get it open soon... 🤔

The allen key will not reach the bolt. Its about 2cm short. What else could i use?

Worked a treat. A video about the causes and fixes would be super useful. In my case it turned out the frame had moved so I tightened up some screws and everything aligned perfectly again 😄

Bad adjustment, failure of parts, poor assembly, rust, things loosening, temperature (expansion & contraction), etc. When it comes down to it, it's often the quality of assembly and the parts fitted! If you need to lubricate any of the fittings, silicone grease is good. Oil and ordinary grease can stain the plastic and cause rubber parts to fail. Thanks for letting me know, it's always good to hear when it helped someone out... 😄👍
Hi i have an idealCombi window where you press down the button to open or close but it's halfways locked now i can't open it's not fully closed ive been trying to open unlock it no chance since a week any tips , please ?? Would be great thanks a lot
Hi, unfortunately I don't know alot about these particular windows. All I can think of, is to check that nothing has become seized, stuck, unattached or broken. The best thing to do is examine another window that works (hopefully on the ground floor) and try and work out how it is meant to operate, (so you can work out why your window is stuck?). Check for movement on any shoot bolts and locking mechanisms (in both directions). I note that the firm gives a 10 year guarantee idealcombi.com/customer-service/, so if your windows are less than 10 years old, it may be worth contacting them. Please do not fall out of an open window, it is very easy to do so.

My window was open at the time, not sure how. So now I can't get it all the way closed. Those pin's or rollers (along bottom, side, and maybe top) won't budge. I don't need to pry into anything, of course. So where is it broken or stuck?
Hi, the gearbox fitted inside the window (the handle shaft passes through it) has probably broken. To shut the window, you will need to remove the shootbolt(s), as one, or both have probably not retracted. The shootbolts are normally held in place by screws, but are sometimes pop riveted. If you manage to move the shootbolts (without removing) and shut the window, it probably won't open again by the handle (because of the broken gearbox). You will then have to use an allen key (or similar) to open the window, as shown in the video.

@@doitup Since the window was open, it was easy to reach things. And it turns out that the problem was that all the lubricant had dried out over many years. Spraying a lube in by every sliding pin and working them loosened things up (I didn't figure it out, a great handyman we like did), then the lock handle could turn. We have 2 of these windows so we made sure to lube the 2nd one as well. I'd say we got lucky! And yes, your info helped me understand it a lot better. The pins are on 3 sides of the pane.
That's great, a nice simple fix. I sometimes fall into the trap of fearing the worst, and then it turns out it's not so bad after all!
It's not one of those locks that I can just move up or down with a L-shaped metal. It's only stuck one side but it goes in and out, not up and down. It's been very cold cos I can't shut it as its broken or jammmed please help.
Hi, it's difficult to offer advice without seeing the window, as I only have experience with the mechanism in the video. If you have another window with the same mechanism (on the ground floor), you can open it and see how the mechanism works. You may then be able to work out how you can fix it? To get the broken window shut, you may be able to gently tap the item out the way, that's stopping the window closing. You may need to move the window handle to the open position?

Tried this after replacing the handle on a side hinged window. Seems to be stuck in the locked position because the alan key trick didn't work. Been a horrible 5 days with a window locked during a heat wave

Hi, it can be difficult to say what's happening without seeing the window mechanism. There are some images here that may or may not help: do-it-up.com/house/windows/how-to-open-a-jammed-stuck-or-seized-upvc-window/#Opening-a-Stuck-PVC-Window-Demonstration? The pins (sometimes call mushrooms) can go around the corners of the window and operate when moving the handle.
Sometimes the easiest thing to do is look at another window (on the ground floor) that has the same mechanism. To familiarise yourself with how the lock works and where all the parts are fitted. You may be able to work out how to open it?
- Make sure the window handle is in the open position, before trying to open.
- You may need to remove the window handle if it gives you more room.
- Make sure you are pulling in the right direction (in the direction that the shootbolts move to open).
- Both shootbolts can get stuck, so you may need to release both sides.

Hi, I'm not sure what you can do here, but here's some thoughts. I presuming you don't have access to the outside of the window due to the height off the ground?
- Can the glass be removed from the inside, would that give you access?
- Are you able to look at another window with the same mechanism (that works). You may be able to work out a way to open it (with it open) and practice a method?
Please be careful, as it's very easy to fall out of an open window. This may not have helped much, but it may give you some ideas? If you get the window open and have some useful tips, please share as it might help others. I hope you get it open soon... 🤔
Won`t work with mine, when it`s in the locked position you cant get to the catches.
Hi, unfortunately when the windows shut there's not much of a gap to get a tool in. You sometimes have to create a gap by using a screwdriver or something similar, and get the plastic to flex ever so slightly to be able to get a tool in. Sometimes, it's not very easy... See the video here: ua-cam.com/video/LyLMLc8iDmc/v-deo.html where I use a screwdriver. You may want to put some cardboard against the window to help prevent any scratches.

My problem with a similar window is the opposite the handle isn't working mechanism. Seems to be slipping inside.
Hi, you may have spotted the one of the common causes of failure. The gearbox breaking... the handle moves, but it doesn't operate the shootbolts. To get the window open, you have to manually move the shoot bolts, (that are usually operated by the handle). Trouble is, once you get the window open. It won't close, or it gets stuck again. Quite often, you have to remove the shoot bolts, so you can open and close the window whilst you wait for parts. Please be careful, it's easy to fall out an open window. Hi, you probably need to check the gearbox (the handle shaft goes into it). As the gearbox can often fracture in several places, and then one or both the shootbolts stop working. Great I managed to open my stuck window, Problem is on mine is the handle does not properly engage the locks It misses as its loose inside , if I open the window and turn the handle I see them move a bit but then slip back into same position. so it does it everythime I close it. :(

I have a slightly different type of mechanism, its also a top light by the bolts are in the sides of the window and move in and out into the frame instead of up and down. Do you of a remedy for this?

Hi, can the window be closed after it's been opened... It will be dependant on what's caused the issue?
The first thing to do is find out which parts have caused the issue. Check which parts move and which don't (where appropriate, that parts move in both directions). Then it should be a straight forward job of replacing the parts. The parts are often fixed in place with screws, but can be pop riveted. In which case the pop rivets will need to be drilled out. If you're lucky, it will be a downstairs window. But if it's an upstairs, then you may need access from the outside. Lots more detail on how to repair and replace, can be found here:

Hi, first part - The windows:
Wooden windows may have a completely different locking mechanism. The first thing is, are they old windows (it sounds like they are)? In which case they are probably held shut just by the handle, (nice and simple). If this is the case, the windows may not open because the wood has expanded, they have been nailed shut, or they have been glued shut by many different coats of paint over the years? All you can do is try and fathom out what the actual cause is:
- Look for nail indentations, (may be covered in paint).
- Are there gaps all around the window opening. Can something thin fit inside the gap, all the way along (on both sides of the window).
- Is there any movement in any corners of the opening part of the window?
Take your time, and try and work though the potential causes.

Black mould on the walls and ceilings:
The mould issue can often be misdiagnosed and can have several causes. I have always wanted to do a video on this (but haven't had the time), plus there's a lot of subject matter when you start looking into the detail. Very generally:
- Too much moisture inside the house and it not escaping.
- Water ingress.
- The dew point.
Too much moisture - The first is straight forward. Let the moisture out from bathrooms, cooking and living things inside the house (but you can't open the windows...).
Water ingress - Linked to above. If there is water ingress, rising damp, water penetration, leak in the roof, etc. Then there is an extra need to get rid of the additional moisture. Answer - Stop the water ingress.
The dew point -
This is the one that gets missed and mistaken for water ingress. People have spent a lot of money thinking the mould is caused by water ingress, when the dew point is the reason. Basically, homes are heated more these days (central heating, etc). When warm air hits a cold wall or ceiling, water droplets form. The wall or ceiling then becomes damp and mould starts to form. This is often mistaken as water ingress. This is often caused by no, or too little insulation.
Solid walls and thermal bridging - Thermal bridging is where the cold is transmitted past any insulation that may be in place. The answer is to increase the insulation, stop any thermal bridging and move the dew point further away (may not be the correct term, but it kind of explains it). Or, you increase the heat, so the cold wall is not cold anymore. I've seen it where radiator thermostats are removed and the heating is left on 24 hrs, not practical or cheap!). Basically, in this case it's solved by insulation and stopping thermal bridging. Note that more insulation and sealing a building (reducing ventilation), can also increase moisture levels. @@doitup Thank you for your advice, I managed to open one of them (the only handle that had some movement) and it is a bolt mechanism that moves with the handle. The others are so badly corroded that they don't even wiggle, the whole window moves when you try to turn the handle and I can't even get the screws out, as then i could replace the handle or turn the mechanism with an allen key. I just have to get those screws out somehow....
Hi, I'm glad you got one window open, as this now means you know how the others should open (if they're all the same). Sounds like you need to drill out the screws, or use a screw extractor (google search). If you're replacing the handles, is it easier to cut the handle away? One of the reasons for doing this, is sometimes bits of screw broken off and left in the window get in the way of fixing a replacement? Once the handle is cut away, you may be able to grab the old screws with large pliers or mole grips and get the screws out cleanly. It may be worth getting a replacement handle to see how it fits/fixed before taking the old one off?
Unfortunately, you probably won't know the best method until you've removed the first one? You could also try penetrating fluid (oil) to free up the handles (leave to soak). The downside is, penetrating fluid could damage the wood finish. Note that if you cut the handles off with a grinder, any sparks can embed themselves in the glass, (plus possible fire hazard). If the handles aluminium, you may not get so many sparks? A few idea's anyway...

Practice opening it with the tool. You may need to move the window handle to assist? Hopefully, you will be able to see what you may need to do to get the window open.

I had one like this. I thought I was doing it wrong or not getting the mushroom. I was and after multiple sessions of trying and almost calling someone to do the job, I used a hammer on the pliers, a heave and ho, it opened up! turned out the gear unit had broken and the bottom shootrod was not moving when using the handle to open. Another window had already been tied with a paper clip (holding the bottom mushroom in the unlock position) and that had the same problem. I bought 2 new gear units and replaced them as per your website instructions - easy and now fixed. As a temporary fix, before the parts arrived, I removed the bottom shootrod after marking the place the gears locked onto the rod. That way, it was still locking on the top rod and the handle itself. Thanks!
Edit: One thing I'll say is when replacing the gear, I don't think I saw how to get the right part on your site (apologies if I missed it!). I found the info I needed was like 22mm and 9.5mm. The 9.5 mm you find written on the edge of the window lock bolt that moves in and out when you lock/unlock the window (it said 095 on mine) and the other size is the middle of the hole where the handle goes into the lock to the front of the plate - I found another site that told me this so I could easily find the part I needed. There was also a part number on the gearbox that helped me.

Hi, it's often because the gearbox has broken. They are made of cast alloy and can be brittle. Here's some photo's showing how they can break do-it-up.com/house/windows/how-to-open-a-jammed-stuck-or-seized-upvc-window/#uPVC-Window-Lock-Faults. The window fittings can also corrode adding to the problem. Other parts can break, or become misaligned making it difficult to open. You are right with heat expansion. It can have a part to play in situations where sometimes it opens, sometimes it doesn't. As the temperature fluctuations can cause the parts to become misaligned.
Have a look at another window that has the same fittings (on the ground floor for safety). You might be able to see how your window opens and be able to work out how best to open it.
Please don’t fall out of an open window, it’s easily done. Be careful, be safe! Any work done at your own risk.

Hi, I've not had a window that's rusted so bad the shootbolts won't move, so I can't give you detailed advice. However, the window frame will flex a bit more with the glass removed. Beware though, as I have seen the frame crack along the plastic welds where too much force has been used (when flexing the window), or it wasn't welded properly in the first place. So be careful.
To remove the glass, remove the rubber seal around the window, to give some wriggle room. You then have to prise out the plastic trim holding the glass in (older windows from the outside, newer windows from the inside). Note that you may have to push the trim towards the glass, before you can prise it out. If the window flexes a bit more, you may be able to get a tool in there to free the window up. Try adding some lubricant to help free it up if you can, (note that oils can stain white plastic).
You could also try looking at another window that has the same fittings (preferably on the ground floor). With the window open, see if you can practice opening it with a tool? You may need to use a bent nail or similar if the alan keys not man enough, or won't reach.

Have a look at another window (with the same mechanism) to work out if there is a method of opening - Choose a window on the ground floor, as you don't want to fall out the window!
It could be that if you dismantle the lock you may be able to open the window? Or, there may be some holes somewhere in the mechanism (shoot bolts) that you could grab with a pick. Practice, investigate with another open window (on the ground floor) to see if you can to work out a method of opening. It sounds like it may be a bit tricky, but I hope you suceed?

One slight issue I've spotted now is that the mushroom on the side that was jammed, doesn't move when I 'lock' the window (while it's open)... It slides when I unlock it but I have to hit it with a hammer for the unlock. Do you know how I could fix this?

My window opens half way but at the bottom it is stack. Tried everything. Cannot open it.

Hi, the gearbox (attached to the window handle) often breaks, and will no longer move one or both of the shootbolts. It sounds like the top shootbolt is moving and the bottom one isn't. You usually have to get an allen key, or a bent nail or similar and move the shootbolt manually as per the video. You can also get corrosion causing the shootbolt to jam, or the window has dropped and the window bind's against the keeper plates (or the window components have not been installed or adjusted correctly). Unfortunately, it can be difficult to advise when you're not able to see the actual issue? Wow very nice trick. I have a new Flat where I have all sorts of issue and this could be one that will for sure help me get them fixed some of them. I need to spray the hinges to make them open easier as is very hard when they open and close. Do you recommend what can I spray with?
Hi, there isn't anything I would specifically recommend, but I would try and avoid getting oil on any plastic if you can, as it might stain? Silicone grease is good stuff. It tends to be white in colour and is used by plumbers on plastic pipe fittings. Has some water resistance (doesn't wash away so easily) and it doesn't destroy rubber. Downside is, it doesn't run into gaps, so may need to be worked in.

Hi, it's not unusual for the roller cams / mushrooms to be missing, as they are screwed in place and are either not fitted or have come loose and fallen off. It can make it a lot more difficult to open the window... I've not tried opening a window where they're missing, but my first thought was trying to get a 'U' shaped tool in there (if there was a hole where the roller cam could have been fitted?). You could try looking at another window that has the same fittings (preferably on the ground floor). With the window open, see if you can practice opening it with a tool?

Just a thought... If you're really stuck, it would be possible to put an inspection hole (slot) in the window frame, by going in through where the glass would fit, (so you can't see the hole when the glass and shootbolt is refitted). You could try and move the shootbolt through the inspection hole (maybe drilling a hole in the shootbolt to lever it up). This does depend on how free the shootbolt is? I haven't tried this myself, but the hole (slot in the frame) wouldn't need to be very big, and if positioned right, could be hidden afterwards. It depends how stuck you are? Note: You would need to work out the best position for making a slot, by looking at another window with the same fittings.

I had all my windows replaced two years ago and one of them already jammed and won't open (one of those that open upwards) and one of them that very difficult to close now so I would not want to close the window completely as I think it won't open if I closed it. Do you think if there's something I can do before closing that window? I think all the windows are in very low quality unfortunately
If it's the gearbox that's broken and it's not operating the shootbolts properly (moving them in both directions), you can remove the shootbolts (top and bottom, or left and right) and just leave the window lock (next to the handle) in place, and the window will open and close. Check that the window lock operates freely when you have removed the shootbolts. If you can, use a ground floor window (with the same fittings) to check how everything works. Please be careful and carry out any work safely, it's very easy to fall out of an open window...

That handle looks ever so familiar. On my bathroom window it is locked/closed but the handle just rotates 180 degrees. The lock button depresses but I've not had it looked since moving in several years ago as it is a second story window between two houses. Any advice? I can if required upload a video.
Hi. If the handle rotates you should be able to access the screws holding the handle in place. The screws may be hidden behind a plastic cover which can be removed with a small screwdriver (see do-it-up.com/house/windows/how-to-open-a-jammed-stuck-or-seized-upvc-window/#scroll-repairing ). Remove the handle. It's then a case of working out if it's a defective handle, or the gearbox that the handle fixes to? You can do this by trying to operate the lock with handle slid back in (only part way), or by using a large blade screwdriver instead of the handle? If the handle operates the gearbox, but the window doesn't open, then the gearbox will probably need replacing (caveat - It is possible one of the shootbolts is detached from the gearbox if it hasn't been fitted properly - follow the link above for info). Hope this helps...

@@doitup thanks for replying. Bizarrely on the corresponding window upstairs, it doesn’t look like there is anything to use a tool on, the handle seems to merely move the shoot bolt up and down and there is nothing like a roller cam on it.
Hi, it's not unusual for the roller cams / mushrooms to be missing, as they are screwed in place and are either not fitted or have come loose and fallen off. I've not tried opening a window where they're missing, but my first thought was trying to get a 'U' shaped tool in there (if there was a hole where the roller cam could have been fitted?). And try practicing on an open ground floor window.
Just a thought... If you're really stuck, it would be possible to put an inspection hole (slot) in the window frame, by going in through where the glass would fit, (so you can't see the hole when the glass and shootbolt is refitted). You could try and move the shootbolt through the inspection hole (maybe drilling a hole in the shootbolt to lever it up). This does depend on how free the shootbolt is? I haven't tried this myself, but the hole (slot in the frame) wouldn't need to be very big, and if positioned right, could be hidden afterwards. It depends how stuck you are? Note: You would need to work out the best position for making a slot, by looking at another window with the same fittings.

My living room window doesnt have the mushrooms its like a door lock on the sides of it and the right side is stuck in place, how would you takle this as iv tried the method shown in this video, but i have to push the lock back into the frame and not slide it.
Hi, I've not tried to open one of these, so I'm not sure what to advise? All you can do is look at another window (on the ground floor) and see if you can work out a way of pushing/pulling the lock back in and familiarise yourself on how it works? Things to think of (You've probably done some of this already) are:
- How does the handle move the lock?
- Can you see why its not moving?
- Is there anywhere something can be attached to pull or push the lock?
- With the window closed. Can anything be removed to gain access to the mechanism?
As always, at your own risk... If you remove the glass (remove the plastic beads around the glass edge - Older windows outside edge, newer windows inside edge). The frame will flex slightly more. Be careful though as things can break (the plastic welds holding the window together can be brittle and the hinges can break). You might be very lucky in moving something, if the window flexes a bit more? Please be careful, it is very easy to fall out of an open window. Is there access to the window lock mechanism with the glass removed?
Warning - I have never tried this, (and it is the very last resort). The whole window frame is usually held in place by drilling through the plastic frame and fixing into the wall using long screws. On the same basis, with the glass removed, you could drill an inspection hole through the frame to the lock bolts (through the recess in the frame where the glass was fitted). Choose the best position to drill through carefully by comparing the lock bolt position on another window (on the ground floor). Any hole(s) you drill will need to be hidden when the glass etc is replaced. I hope this helps…
@@doitup hi thanks for your reply all my other windows unlock like the one in the video, i was thinking if i remove the handle would that gain access to the pully wire soni could pull that and release the right hand side or would the hole be to small to pull it. Other than that i think i might have to try the drilling method
All you can do is take apart anything you can get access to, and see if there is anything you can operate? If not (and it's wire operated), drilling a hole that you can slide a hook in to try and grab the wire so you can pull it, may do the trick?
As I've not opened one of these types of window, has anyone else got a solution or thought?
