This gets mentioned in every Band of Brothers reaction video, but Blithe didn't die in 1948. He just lost touch with the rest of the company after the war, and everyone assumed he died. He survived his wounds, and even went on to serve in the Korean war, and was awarded a Bronze an Silver Star. He passed away in 1967.

I'm glad that you two girls noticed that the last scene at the laundry meant something. Each of those unclaimed packages represented a person who didn't get to come back to England and pay the nice lady for taking care of "the little things" while they died taking care of the big thing. Human story. Your channel is my favorite 'Reaction' always.

Albert Blithe actually ended up being one Hell of a soldier. He survived his wounds in 1944, and, was sent back to a hospital in the States to recover, where he remained until his discharge in October, 1945. He was then called back to serve in Korea, where he was awarded 1 Silver Star, 3 Bronze Stars, and, 2 more Purple Hearts. He then decided to make the Army his career, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He died, from complications of ulcer surgery, in an Army hospital in Weisbaden, Germany, in 1967.

The parachute that soldier is saving he would send back to his fiancée. Silk was almost impossible to get for people back home. All silk was being used to make parachutes, and silk was generally imported from China, but because of the Japanese invasion of China and the war in the Pacific, none was being imported during the War. So if he sent her the silk parachute it would be valuable for making a wedding gown.

6:43 when any kind of ordnance hits a building you’re in, you lose a decent amount of your situational awareness, which is what happened with the German soldier.

When they kick in the door and find the family, they aren’t deciding whether to shoot, they’re frozen in shock because Luz had almost thrown in a grenade like with the rest of the houses, and if he’d done that the whole family would have been killed.
Something to remember is up until they reach Germany, this is all friendly territory that has undergone brutal occupation for five years. So the civilians and ordinary people are on Easy’s side and vice versa.

Yes, Blithe survives. One of the few mistakes Band of Brothers makes. Then went on to serve, with distinction in the Korean War. "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it.”
    - Captain Ronald Speirs. He's more than a man of his word and will soon prove it for the entire company. Currahee ♠

Always love watching your reactions to this. Eventually, you'll have to watch The Pacific... but it's far more intense, mentally. Some other things to note:
    - Some of the burning cars, buildings, and trucks were just from being hit by shells, bullets, and so on. We did burn *some* things down to make sure the enemy wouldn't be able to use it if the spot was ever taken back, but that wasn't much.
    - Luz didn't shoot the family, so no worries 🙂
    - About Cptn. Winters getting hit in the ankle: I don't think people realize how far away they can be from combat and still be at risk of catching a stray bullet or shrapnel. People record big explosions during a war, just standing there, and I keep trying to shove them into cover, onto the ground, or tell them to get away from the window (yelling at my screen 🤣)

9:55 As an English speaker I'm so impressed with the words these girls use. I've never used the word "careless" that much. Searching definitions on Google shows how commonly the word was used throughout history and in books especially. "Careless" has only decreased in popularity which is the same with many words used in these war films. Great video!

Blithe actually lived and didn't die till 1967 Also Spears understood how to use fear were Winters understood how to reach thru it. Spears said "accept that your dead" to say there is nothing to fear if you die we are all going to die someday one way or another. Were winters didn't say anything about him being afraid he just said stand up "you can do it" and he could and he did. Winters understood that blithe simply couldn't stop thinking about his dying and killing and it was consuming him he reached out and gave him a hand without physically doing it. Maybe people like blithe are a bit better then the rest of us we couldn't really have wars if everyone was like him, but they aren't and evil will always exist.

    Carentan O Carentan
    BY LOUIS SIMPSON
Trees in the old days used to stand
    And shape a shady lane
Where lovers wandered hand in hand
    Who came from Carentan.
This was the shining green canal
Where we came two by two
    Walking at combat-interval.
    Such trees we never knew.
The day was early June, the ground
Was soft and bright with dew.
Far away the guns did sound,
But here the sky was blue.
The sky was blue, but there a smoke
    Hung still above the sea
    Where the ships together spoke
To towns we could not see.
Could you have seen us through a glass
You would have said a walk
Of farmers out to turn the grass,
    Each with his own hay-fork.
The watchers in their leopard suits
    Waited till it was time,
And aimed between the belt and boot
    And let the barrel climb.
I must lie down at once, there is
    A hammer at my knee.
And call it death or cowardice,
    Don’t count again on me.
    Everything’s all right, Mother,
    Everyone gets the same
    At one time or another.
    It’s all in the game.
I never strolled, nor ever shall,
    Down such a leafy lane.
I never drank in a canal,
    Nor ever shall again.
There is a whistling in the leaves
And it is not the wind,
The twigs are falling from the knives
That cut men to the ground.
    Tell me, Master-Sergeant,
The way to turn and shoot.
    But the Sergeant’s silent
That taught me how to do it.
    O Captain, show us quickly
    Our place upon the map.
    But the Captain’s sickly
    And taking a long nap.
    Lieutenant, what’s my duty,
    My place in the platoon?
    He too’s a sleeping beauty,
    Charmed by that strange tune.
    Carentan O Carentan
    Before we met with you
We never yet had lost a man
Or known what death could do.

I'm not sure if you ladies knew, But it was Germany, Japan and Italy that started invadeing places, America joined the war after Peral Harbour, British forces as well as other were fighting for a long time before hand, Most say that when America joined the war when Japan attacked them it turned the war, The American soldiers in that war are hero's to more than just the American's, British people, French and others all are thankful for the sacrifice of the American's dureing WW2. I just hope there's never gonna be a 3rd World War, You'd think after two of them we'd know better by now, But.. Nope. Loved the reaction, Thank you ladies once again.

This series is based on interviews of actual veterans so sometimes the story we see is more true to how they remembered things than what may have been actual fact. This episode shows this in the scene where everyone is talking about how Speirs shot the enemy prisoners but nobody saw it for themselves so they were just repeating different conflicting versions of the incident that they had heard from other people who didn't see it either.

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 8 місяців тому +2

I always found it odd that the series didn't really address the dark reality that until the beachhead was established, they were under orders to not take and keep prisoners because they didn't have resources, but also just not let enemy soldiers go in case they could give away numbers and positions. The makers of the show could not portray the terrain around Carentan the way it really was, so it is really hard for people to understand why the troops went straight up the road to get into the town, and you wondered why they could not hide and sneak in through the woods. But the Germans had flooded all the areas around Carentan, and the only ways into the town were across the few raised causeways...which the Germans defended heavily. There was no option for the Americans trying to get into the town but to get across the causeways as fast as possible, there was no way to approach the town under cover or concealment.
It is one of the reasons I recommend that channel The Operations Room to folks....because they show the real battles so you can see the few important things they could not show in the series.

The story of Lt. Speirs killing the prisoners is meant to portray how rumors both get started and get overly exaggerated as time goes on. The real story, though still tragic and brutal, is more tame and actually makes sense when you understand the situation Speirs was in at the time.

Normally, US soldiers followed the Geneva Convention so they would not execute captured emery soldiers but from what I have read, the Airborne were behind enemy lines and were instructed to kill captured soldiers. It seems a bit strange to me but that it what I read. Maybe someone who knows better can fill us in.

@@jimglenn6972 Until the Airborne units had linked up with units moving inland from the beaches, they had no capability to take prisoners. They were outmanned & surrounded, and the fear was that prisoners could potentially overpower and kill their captors. So, until they linked up with units from the beaches, prisoners, esp if there were a lot of them, were executed.

@@jimglenn6972 If you watch carefully, Lt. Spiers' shooting of enemy prisoners was to shoot them in the legs to disable them. This is historically not true - but interestingly enough, after an engagement in Afghanistan portrayed in the movie 'Lone Survivor', the Australian Special Forces are now trained to cut the Achilles' tendon of anyone captured behind the lines who could give away their position when released.

Idk if anyone mentioned this in the comments, but the reason why they ran up that road towards the town in the beginning of the attack, out in the open, was sort of explained, but not shown until later. All around the town was open, low-lying farmland, and the Germans had flooded it all like rice fields. It made a kind of flooded castle moat style defense around the entire town, where people would have to wade through water out in the open to get close. That meant that they just had to point their main guns towards the narrow paths and roads that weren't flooded, and only need to have a few people keeping watch over the flooded fields. So while it looks like they're just charging in out in the open... Their other ways in were even worse. Later in the battle, once they start driving the Germans out of the town, it shows them trying to get away through the same fields they had flooded, and how much it had made them slow, easy targets. That was why the army had to charge up those roads directly into gunfire.

Taking prisoners is a specific mission that usually isn't instituted in the initial assaults/battles. It requires resources and personnel trained for prisoner handling, intelligence collection/interrogation, housing/food/medicine
that can't/shouldn't necessarily be done by leading edge troops whose sole purpose should be combat operations and little else.

    a WW2 American is squad is anywhere between 8 and 12 men;
    a platoon are some 3~4 squads + command personnel, for about 30~40 men, total;
    a company is between 3 to 5 platoons and will usually have anything between 100 and 150 men;
    an Airborne battalion have A(ble); B(aker), C(harlie), D(og), E(asy) and F(ox) companies + support and command personnel.
Units larger than a Battalion are mostly administrative, so, while they may be deployed as a group, they will rarely be commanded as a single entity in battle

The economic aspect of the war needs to be talked about more. Before getting fully involved, the United States was just supplying the Allies while maintaining a peacetime economy. After Pearl Harbor, the gloves came off and the entire economy moved to manufacturing weapons, vehicles, clothing and ammunition for the war. The United States had an economy that outweighed all other combatants combined
