I'm a former Army Medic. We learned about Desmond Doss during our training. There is no one I respect more in our line of work than Corporal Doss.
To maintain his faith in humanity in a time when the world is out to get at each other's throats exemplifies the grace and mercy of his faith.
RIP Doss. Your leadership and grace have inspired a generation like me to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for your service

Okinawa was not the first battle Doss was in. He had already proven himself to his unit and was well respected for his conduct under fire. While stationed on Okinawa I walked Hacksaw Ridge, the Sugar Loaf, and the Suicide Cliffs. This is torn ground. On a number of occasions, I observed an elderly American couple walking these battle fields and saw men point out fox holes they had dug and places friends had died. In the jungle you can still find ordinance and weapons of war.

Japanese soldiers (all mostly officers) committed seppuku as an action of self-resolve to restore their honor to themselves, country, and family especially when a battle was lost. It originates back to the ancient times of the samurai.
      Why the stomach?

In real life, Desmond Doss saved more men than the 75 he was credited with. He said there were around 50, the army said at least 100, so for his medal of honor citation they split the difference. Also, he fought in several long campaigns. The battle of Okinawa wasn’t their first combat so he saved soldiers before that, and he was wounded on 3 occasions, not just the one the movie showed. Japanese soldiers who caught on Hacksaw Ridge said they knew he was out there, and some said they spotted him more than once, but when they tried to shoot him their guns wouldn’t fire. The Japanese had annexed Okinawa a few decades earlier. The U.S. invaded to liberate Okinawa from the Empire of Japan and use it as a base to invade Japan. However, the fighting was so bloody that about half the population of Okinawa was killed in the fighting.
The Pacific has a particularly dramatic episode about this fighting.
After taking Okinawa, they would have invaded the home islands of Japan. However, Japan surrendered after the nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so the invasion never happened. Wounded troops receive a medal called a Purple Heart. Based on casualty estimates for the invasion of Japan, the U.S. had already ordered so many purple hearts to give to troops that they haven't run out yet in all the wars since.

On their date, they weren't watching a movie about a war. Back in those days, before home TV, an evening's movie program consisted of a weekly newsreel (which is where the war footage was), some cartoons, a short subject (maybe Flash Gordon, maybe The Three Stooges), and then a Feature. Sometimes two Features.

14:15 To answer your question: the military is widely stupid, so they always train them in the same stupid ways.
A friend of mine that I was with when I went to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego with had a suture on his lip, halfway up his cheek, which then led to the name Scarface, courtesy of one of my Drill Instructors.
But it's mainly a combination of trying to prevent any more stupidity from happening with their own version of having fun because they most likely were told to be a Drill Sergeant. The military gets enough bad reputation from current personnel committing crimes, not upholding regulations, etc. These people willingly went into a military recruiting office, willingly signed paperwork that they were fully allowed to read over before signing, willingly decided that this is what they want, and are in turn willingly allowing stupid shit like this to happen to them.
But this scene in particular is very tame when compared to real life. I've heard shit from some veterans when they went through their basic, I've seen some VERY awful things my own Drill Instructors have done to me and the rest of my platoon in boot camp, as well as others when I was still there all those years ago. Yelling in his face is normal for me, even though I still break down whenever someone does blast me, it's just that I've now experienced it in the most grandiose way possible: by joining the U.S. military lol.

4:47 the father was suffering from severe PTSD from his experiences in WW1, and turned to alcohol as a means of coping, and became an alcoholic with predictable results. The actor also fairly represents that behavior at around the 9:50 mark of this video; he's likely already drunk at dinner; and describing what happened to his friend makes him relive the memories of it, which in real life can induce a state not dissimilar to a state of psychosis.
8:32 they weren't watching a movie about a war; that was a pre-movie propaganda piece that was meant to remind people of the war so that they would buy war bonds, enlist in the service, get a job at a war factory and so on.
12:30 I hate war, too. Every life lost in war is a life that was nurtured by another; cared for by others. But, unfortunately, war is an aspect of human nature which even time seems incapable of changing.
14:03 the Army does this to essentially serve 2 purposes: (1) to establish the power dynamic that the commanding officer is in charge, and (2) to instill in the soldier-to-be the the quality of following orders, regardless of how questionable they may seem. In this context (training); the absurdity is particularly purposeful; if the soldier can't be trusted to do something seemingly stupid in the controlled environment of training, then he can't be trusted to do something important in the battlefield when it will matter the most.
28:07 there was nothing wrong with the food; the guy was vomiting from stress and fear.
29:05 to think that in real life, real men who existed saw such horrors... and how they were able to function after that... is something that I _never_ want to experience. Your whole reaction to the battle segments is pretty much the same as mine was when I first saw this movie, and I am a man.
34:43 Hacksaw was part of the Battle of Okinawa. The Cornerstone of Peace monument has the names of 241, 686 people who died during the Battle of Okinawa, which means the number is probably higher than that.

The soldier throwing up before the first climb, did so because he was afraid. True fear will grip your heart with fingers of ice and force every sick feeling and emotion you ever felt, to wash over you in an instant. Do not fear the man who vomits before battle. Fear the man who does not.
And I couldnt help but notice, after the first night, you comment. "Oh my god im so tired of this." Not even 24 hours of war had passed. that war lasted 3 years

I absolutely love you two ladies reactions. They are always so honest.
Now that you watched "Saving Private Ryan" and "Hacksaw Ridge" and "Full Metal Jacket," I thought I would share my thoughts with you two.
War is horrible, no matter how people's opinions of it are. It is horrible. I think both of you ladies agree with that.
As you can tell from these movies, none of these soldiers came home and shared their experiences with their loved ones, families or friends.
Desmond's Father was so haunted by his time in World War 1 that he drank all the time.
Survivor's Guilt, feeling gulity for surviving when others didn't. He never talked about what he did during World War 1 with his wife or kids.
In Saving Private Ryan, Old Man Ryan at the end of the movie is at Captain Miller's gravestone talking to his wife.
Ryan never talked about Capt Miller or what he did during World War 2 with his wife or kids.
That is part of the duty of a soldier, living with the Ghosts and Horrors of War after the war is over.
They DON'T TEACH YOU THAT in Basic Training Camp.
Everyone deals with the memories and nightmares differently.
Most dealt with it by suffering with it in silence.
Now Soldiers from World War 2 came home, had families and their kids grew up and some of them became soldiers that went to Vietnam.
All that those kids knew was that their fathers were War Heroes.
Now America won World War 1, World War 2 and the Korean War. So of course they think that they would win in Vietnam.
That is why they think that way. America always wins. So why would America not win in Vietnam.
Remember in Full Metal Jacket they always talk about "John Wayne" the movie star. He made a lot of World War 2 movies.
John Wayne always wins and he gets the girl by the end of the movie. This is what they grew up watching.
You can even trace why America felt that they would win Vietnam all the way back to the Korean War, World War 2 and World War 1.
Just some thoughts I had that I thought I'd share with you two since you now have seen Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket and Hacksaw Ridge.
I am always looking forward to your next reaction videos. You ladies are doing great. Keep up the great work.

    • @4Kandlez

America didn't win World War 1 or World War 2, the allies did which America was a part of, America didn't enter WW2 until 1942 after Pearl Harbour. The Russians also played a big part in ending the war in Europe. Any country that goes to war thinks they are going to win, not just America, it would be pretty pointless otherwise
