If films such as the Sheik, son of the Sheik, Blood and sand were made in this day and age i am sure they would not go down well, lucky those times were different and he managed to cast a spell over all who watched his movies. I dont think there has been any man of screen since Rudy in any film who has the same magical appeal he had..There was something really beautiful about this man and i think it went in to great depth, something in his eyes. I think it was the end of his Marriage to Natasha that really cut his life short. I truly believed he loved her and wanted a life with her, when she left him thats when he started going wild, neglecting his health, over socializing, drinking, chain smoking, running round with all these beauties, the accusations that were made about him being a wimp and the fight he had with that journalist who made such accusations which added to a physical fight between the two a few weeks before he died, not to mention the financial strain he was under due to his extravagant life...
If the film was made today, the sheikh would have been a full blood arab and it would have been a great inter-cultural romance, for me, the reveal at the end ruined everything. it added nothing to the plot except providing some sort of artificial alibi to make the love story acceptable, not for her since she loved him anyway, but maybe for the audience I don't know what was the point of that reveal.
@@sdkelmaruecan2907 If you read the book you will discover he was a non-Arab raised by Arabs. Actually a very interesting story. I understand what you mean about making the love "acceptable" though, may or may not have been the intent of the author. But just wanted you to know they did follow the book exactly in this way, so weren't trying to be offensive or anything.
Love this movie and the sequel. Ditto the book. Got the paperback more than 50 years ago. The pages are falling out and it’s held together with rubber bands. A true bodice ripper, as they’re sometimes called, but so good.
I read the book and in the book it is mentioned that his father is English (an aristocrat mind you!) and his mom Spanish also from the nobility. So, he was a European brought up by an Arab. His character was not recast for the film -- it followed the book. Valentino was much, much better in the Son of the Sheik. He does look a little effeminate and hammy in some of the sequences in this movie but in Son of the Sheik, he is perfection! He embodies the idea of the tall, dark, handsome with a touch of menace -- in short the bad boy whom women even today have a soft spot for -- to perfection. See especially the tent scene where he kidnaps Yasmin the dancing girl whom he believes betrayed her. There is more sexually explicit scenes in the average movie of the week than in that scene but nothing can compare to the chemistry and the heavy sexual tension in that scene from the movie done nearly 80 years ago. All the nudity and sex scenes in todays movies can't come near the very idea suggested in that old movie. This is what Hollywood has lost. If you loved The Sheikh I strongly suggest you watch the sequel too!
He was directed in The Sheik to do all the silly nostril flaring and leering, which was not what he wanted to do-- I believe I learned this from the historian who did a commentary on the DVD. He also felt it ridiculous, this overacting, but had to do what the director said until the sequel, when apparently he had more say in the matter. Perhaps because the first was so successful anyway. I completely agree about the chemistry---there is no immodesty, nudity, etc., but intense electricity. This comes from good acting, real tension, and a complete lack of self-consciousness Valentino had. Amazing how we don't need to objectify the human body to create such beautiful tension and romance !! Love how you put it. Have you read his friends book, "Valentino As I Knew Him"? I think you would love it, it's one of the few that I think is truly honest about his character and as you read it you'll feel why.
I read all yall said.yes yes i agree..except!! I DON'T think he s 1 bit effeminate in THE Sheik" i think He. Embodies the very essence of manliness ! Soo hot..NOW i get WHY our sisters of 1920's loved him SO.........💙💙💙
Wow. 😊🦅 I like the part where Zilah offers Diana a hug, and Diana accepts, pouring out her tears in Zilah’s arms, while Zilah does her best to comfort her.

This is a video in public domain, as far as I know, and I think the soundtrack was put together from existing recordings of "orientalist" music. (I recognized some Borodin, for example.) There are no music credits on the video. You can find it online here: www.dailymotion.com/video/x29ihif There's another version -- black and white, not sepia-toned--but people seem to hate the soundtrack on that.
