That was an Arctic Cat quad trac. Supposed to come with a 500cc Pantera Spirit motor and they were rated at 48 hp. I remember them well. They built those both at the Thief River Plant and the old Scorpion plant because at that time Arctic owned Scorpion. Sheesh that’s like 45 years old man. No wonder the engines gone. Arctic used the 500 Suzuki Spirit from 1976 up through the late 1980s. Parts are still out there among the vintage guys. It was a good engine. The 1976 Z 250 used a Kohler lc engine. Only because Cat ran out of time to develop the Suzuki 250 for that season. Same sled with a 440 used the Suzuki lc. One year only.
I swear the local snowmobile club used to have one of these exact same machines as their trail groomer. They finally saved up and bought a new one about '99 lol. I'm pretty sure one of the local towns is using it to clear sidewalks/small parking lots.
So care to explain how the hell this drive system even works? They mentioned differential and hydraulics so that seems just weird. If its mechanical seems like something one could build at home cheap, while hydraulics tend to be expensive.
@@Hellsong89 just on suspicion, based on the way other articulated steering systems work, is it has a driveshaft with a U-joint in line with the pivot, and the hydraulics are probably open center (closed center like a bobcat would be too much parasitic load). the steering might be mechanical, pure hydraulic, or power steering

I live in Boise, but I work in Garden city, one of the lots that I pass on the regular, is full of antique snow cats, tracks, engines, and cabs. Everytime I drive past, I stare, as I’d love one.
Every time I drive past that it distracts my attention from the road to a perilous degree. I don't know why they have so many snowcats but it's awesome.
Maybe something like an 1.0 or 1.2litre car diesel engine (smart , honda , ford etc. ) They have plenty of torque and are reliable and should be light weight enough
You should try to find an Bandvagn 206 (BV 206)! Our and the swedish (where they are made) army use them. Drove them on my time at the army, super fun. It's basically just larger version of that snowcat of yours, witch is so cool to begin with! So happy you found one.
Another pod with tracks (essentially a 6 wheeler) on the back would be amazing! Could even make a mould of the front cab so they looked the same. Also if they got 2 of whatever engine swap they do they could have a matching engine in the third set of tracks at the back. Pretty sure iv seen something like that with 3 articulating pods somewhere here on UA-cam. Might’v been sparks like you said. Could’v even been on their dvds back in the day. So much potential in these boys hands!👌🏼
Im extremely surprised that Ethan had never seen floats like that. Thats exactly what the carbs in both of my three wheelers look like, because they use extremely ubiquitous Mikuni round slide carbs, which are all like that.
I like that on your trip to get it you act like its a surprise vehicle, but then when you made this video you announce it immediately AND its in the thumbnail.
It would be cool to put a "pickup bed" over the engine to make hauling your gear a bit easier. Also, I agree with the idea of a 4-stroke for reliability.
Exactly what i was thinking...A bed from a Kei truck (with the drop down sides), and hydraulic rams to make a dump bed. A small atv winch and some pull out ramps under the bed would make a cool snowmobile recovery vehicle.
You'd need a 5th wheel just to fit a 4bt! Even a small Perkins or Kubota would be huge compared to a 2 cylinder 2 stroke. Plus they only make around 40hp Needs to stay 2 stroke I say. Maybe a 3 cylinder 100hp?
@@jordang94 But that would be a crazy waste of time and everything would have to be upgraded for the weight and power. In the end, they would be better off building something from scratch to use that engine. Why destroy a rare collectors item to put a huge engine in it? A small diesel would be the best option, something 2 or 3 cylinder and probably out of a small skid steer or maybe a welder.

I live in Wisconsin on the Menominee Indian Reservation and this is the first year we had in my 53 years that we got barely any snow. I think we got one little snow storm and it didn't last long and melted right away. Weather has been warm all year only have a week or so of cold weather. Cool snow cat 🐈😺
It's really cool seeing Lewiston. I've only been to Idaho once, driving trucks, and I was deliving to that paper mill you passed. It was a nightmare, something I'll never forget.
I wonder if you guys could put a detachable system on the back that would allow you to swap a bed or a storage trailer onto the back over the engine. That way depending on what you guys are doing you could swap out the back making it a practical utility machine.
This might help you in the future. Instead of replacing the starter solenoid, buy new contacts for like $1.00. It’s pretty easy to rebuild a starter if you need to. Brands like denso are rebuildable,
Beauty of a 2stroke. Its just so simple.. Compression, Spark, & Fuel, and it will run forever lol. You could use a cheap starter solenoid replacement off a bigger UTV if you needed to as well. That thing shreds up the snow and prob dirt too pretty damn good lol, the power of the two stroke makes that possible lol. Plus the fact that it still runs lol..
I think you should stick with a 2-stroke snowmobile engine to keep the weight down. A Rotax 503 Scandinavia, or an Yamaha 540 engine from the VK540. Both very reliable, air-cooled engines used in utility snowmobiles.
sound deaden the cab and you'll and youll be quieter and keep the inside warmer hopefully. I cant wait to see that thing all tricked out with lights and a sick paint job.
I work for an internet company out of Moscow and we service elk city. Wild seeing you guys pull up there in a video. It's for sure the land of a different time lol.
You might be able to tow a Dow mobile with it if you make a spot for the skis to clamp to on the back section. You might even be able to make a piece that flips down and holds the tracks up.
one thing i would have loved to see in the ship is a drain pit, of sorts. obviously yall deal with a lot of snow, watching the puddle form makes me thing an internal drain would have been beneficial. might be nitpickey but its an idea for my own shop in the future
The smell of papermills I'll agree is quite a memorable smell. One that'll get your eyes watering in some instances. Feel lucky that the area there doesn't routinely reach into the upper 90's to low 100's with ~90% or better humidity, and the oh so wonderful gut punch that is marsh at low tide, rotting fish, shrimp, and crabs. Deep whiff of that and if you don't get the feeling like you're going to be dizzy. You've either become acclimated and immune to the smell, or you've got no odor receptors anymore.
The landscape is beautiful up there and a snowcat dude! That’s radical! You guys have to do a little journey like the little red car in the snow cat, of course after you put a bigger engine in it. I spoke too soon. It’s a single seater.
Midwesterner here. Talked to someone that was selling one with a Kohler V-Twin 4 stroke in it. He said it has open diffs and would get stuck and that is why he was getting rid of it.
Now @HeavyDSparks needs to invite you guys to a snowed in episode (after you put a highaboosa motor in of corse) and yes I don’t know how to spell highaboosa
I can confirm as a Wisconsinite that would be absolutely amazing for the snow , be perfect for running to kwik trip grabbing a few packs with nice cold storage on back lol
Pretty cool being from Idaho and watching your channel. You guys are north of us. We're in the Silver Valley down around Wallace, but have been up in your area quite a bit so I recognize some of the towns and highways you go through. I think you bought that snow cat down around where I grew up (Idaho county). Looked like you might have been up the Lochsa river or in the Elk City area. I recognized the Lewiston grade as soon as you were on it. That paper mill has been there for decades. I remember, as a kid, going to Lewiston and smelling that mill (I'm pushing 60 now). It's been amazing watching what a few kids from the backwoods of Idaho have been able to do with your channel.
Tracks With bigger cleet's. I used to have an old article that had the old metal clitz on it like that. And it would get stock really easy because it's only like a 1/2 inch of gleet. And they're metal metal against ice just like I don't know, man just spins a lot.. but I love it
What an cool little rig…some clutch work and a torquey four stroke twin would make for heck of a recovery machine! The combo of awesome music and drone work along with Ethans mad scientist vision make GHPC my first stop for new videos. The Will / Edwin dynamic is so fun …and a little dangerous and unpredictable…LoL.
The effect you guys used at the @6:10 min mark was sooo cool, and then it hit me, I just watched hundreds of miles in a split second. So much time and footage crammed down into a few split seconds. You guys must put so much work into these videos
I like the idea of getting on top form and then seeing how you can improve it is the way to go. A whole load of more power is not going to make it better, the 3 cylinder Rotax? but rear seats and suspension, other than that it is really well engineered bit of kit.
i think in teeds a built banshee motor, it is a 2 cylinder also and 2store and on top of that it will have a ton more power, knowing you guys you most likely have one sitting around somewhere waiting for something
10:09 That carb looks like an old mikuni. The float style is the same on my dads 87 Suzuki lt500r. I believe it was designed for when your throwin it sideways (or on an incline of course)
I have videos and pics of me driving a 1984 OG tucker sno-cat that is named Stella from McMurdo station Antarctica. She ironically has a hard time starting in cold weather but I love her and everything I’ve put her through she has over came.
Very interesting 🤔 little snow ❄️ kitty 🐈. Really like it. Everyone is LS swapping everything, well I guess that's a little over broad. Good luck 👍 guys.
That thing DEF needs a 5th wheel on skis pulled behind it for an epic camping adventure.
A 100 mile camping adventure?
Exactly, like pull it into the bush where you cant even walk for 100 miles!
I'm not sure a machine this size can pull that much, I have a Thiokol Spryte and it's it's a lot larger and still struggles pulling anything more than a drag, it's more of a personal transport machine.

Do either of you two know whose channel this is ? It GHPC they do the impossible.
Just what you needed!! Another cool project. Now you can compete with Robby Layton and Matt's Off Road.
That would be epic!!!
If any one wants to see a cool snowcat build check out the Center Line Designs channel and the custom aluminum snowcat build Nearly Finished the cab | Snowcat Build PT18

Quit showing little flashes of the beastie monster bike that you haven't finished. Hate being teased...
Nice Find. Also wow, most every carb on 2 stroke snowmachine engines are the Mikuni variety that you pointed out. I'd bet millions of them.
Was thinking about buying it for a bit, glad you guys got it. Sean is a friend of mine
I wonder if you guys could put a detachable system on the back that would allow you to swap a bed or a storage trailer onto the back over the engine. That way depending on what you guys are doing you could swap out the back making it a practical utility machine.
The snow cat is made by Arctic Cat Arco in the late 70s. They were very popular for grooming Trails made in thief riverFalls Minnesota.
As another Idahoan, i hated driving through Lewiston. Love the videos keep em comin!!!!
Love the editing, great mix of music and cinematography.
Make it a two-seater cabover. In the rear !! Then you can still copilot😊
This might help you in the future. Instead of replacing the starter solenoid, buy new contacts for like $1.00. It’s pretty easy to rebuild a starter if you need to. Brands like denso are rebuildable,
I almost bought one of those the other day. Cool rigs.
Some angle iron on the belts would do good. 2 inch + for the grip
I’m guessing you had a lot of fuel / oil in the bottom of the engine. Maybe a leaking carb / stuck float. Check the drain plug(s)
Cramming too much engine into a machine such as this wouldn't be usable.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!! You guys find the COOLEST stuff... Thanks for sharing..
sound deaden the cab and you'll and youll be quieter and keep the inside warmer hopefully. I cant wait to see that thing all tricked out with lights and a sick paint job.
I was a gunner in a Bradley. Can confirm. Tracked vehicles are stupid loud.
Always wanted a snowcat, that thing looks awesome, can’t wait to see what shenanigans you guys get up to with it!
Honestly it’s such a cool ride but the real fun is seeing how happy it makes you all. Great purchase!
You should carry a snowmobile on it. Cause you'll need one..
I love anything with tracks and this little guy is adorable......not really practical or fun to ride in ...but adorable !!
Definitely needs to be a lot faster and maybe you guys can make some kind of suspension for it
Guys there is one of these single seat Snow Cats, in Cle Elum, Wa. for sale, right along I-90
lol how many carbs have you taken apart to have never seen a post style float.
Build and weld together a big metal dune buggy with two seats or one for more fun and less weight or two seats and two engines or just one big engine
Midwesterner here. Talked to someone that was selling one with a Kohler V-Twin 4 stroke in it. He said it has open diffs and would get stuck and that is why he was getting rid of it.
I really like my 1977 Arctic cat 500. Engine on mine is really strong for its size. Make sure to check that fan belt is still there.
Very cool machine.. i do agree to much power wouldn't be a benefit but definitely something with a little more.
You should make a video making something from scratch from your junk yard/part store
Can’t wait to watch you guys race at the freedom 500
Same in the Scotland , cold as duck but not enough snow to have fun in! Grind hard!
Now @HeavyDSparks needs to invite you guys to a snowed in episode (after you put a highaboosa motor in of corse) and yes I don’t know how to spell highaboosa
Well this Minnesotan loves this bud. Seeing this brought back fond memories when I was on my grandpa’s farm.
We use Snow Cats all the time here in Daytona Beach Florida during the coldest winter months.
Paint it yellow and then you have a MINION!
It would be crazzyyy cool if yall put a motorcycle engine in that electric chineese jeep/rock crawler thing
I have never wanted anything more in my life that I needed less. Much love from Texas.
Tread! Snowcat type tread.. give you a little more grip in the powdery stuff
That was awesome, I can not wait to see what you guys do with this project I would try to put suspension on it (if possible).
i think in teeds a built banshee motor, it is a 2 cylinder also and 2store and on top of that it will have a ton more power, knowing you guys you most likely have one sitting around somewhere waiting for something
10:09 That carb looks like an old mikuni. The float style is the same on my dads 87 Suzuki lt500r. I believe it was designed for when your throwin it sideways (or on an incline of course)
In the time laps back to base, I like how the top of the door keeps bending outward relative to the speed you're travelling.
Snow cats are so cool. That thing goes pretty fast for it's size
There is something new with the editing and music and I’m loving it
I cant believe you lost a ramp on the road!! Hope it didn't kill somebody
That Tundra is a beaut. Saw one with the new Leer cap on it that has the rear duck spoiler(ish thing) and it’s like it was made for it
Who would ever leave if they had a property like this. You got everything you could want right there.
