Thanks to you making this video I have been successful at changing the valve cover gasket on my own jeep grand Cherokee.this video made it a lot easier.
Thank you for watching our video on how to change the valve cover gasket on a 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 engine. This is a fairly easy job to tackle that can be performed in your driveway with basic hand tools. Have a great day!
At 32:12 regarding the ground; That should be a ribbon cable grounding to the head. That ribbon ground will help with RF interference with the radio. Very much appreciate the video, guys. Did a great job on the run-throug.
Thanks for the video!!! Definitely not a mechanic but, this let me change the gasket myself along with the pcv, CCV, grommets, and hoses. Hardest part was finding the perfect angle to get the valve cover out lol
Saw some where the bolt at very front should be last, is that so? A lot of questions I have asked about 3. Doing all my self, hope to hear asap. Girl power!
Like the video, I am putting parts on an engine I bought to place in a 2003 jeep wrangler sport. Could you tell me where I could find those metal inserts that go inside the grommet.
At 16:43 of the video we remove them from the old valve cover grommets clean them and place the inserts into the new provided grommets. If you need them the dealer may be able to get them for you. Hope this helps you out.
The valves were fine. If you take the valve cover off and you fine a lot of burnt oil and crud sitting on everything you could use a shop vac to carefully remove it. Hope this helps you out.
I was just thinking about doing mine and now I'm going to.. Nice job Very informative.. what's the actual charge to have something like this done for you
I have a 2002 grand Cherokee 4.0L. I was chasing a bunch of vacuum leaks from brittle hoses and when using throttle body cleaner to detect changes in rev I noticed big revs when spraying along the backside seam of the valve cover. Occasionally I'll hear a high pitched whistling that comes and goes. Not to mention the block is pretty wet and dirty. Also having a misfire code for cylinder 6, assuming it's from improper fuel/air ratio due to sucking air through the leaky VC, or even oil dripping into the spark plug well. Any help/advice is appreciated as I plan on replacing the gaskets and possibly the whole cover assembly asap. I also notice the ports for the PCV hose are cracked and loose which cannot be good I'd imagine, hence why I figured it'd be best to just get a whole new kit, and buy the PCV hose assembly separately.
I need help! Currently working on mine (Jeep GC 2000 V8 4.7) and I’m afraid to tighten the bolts even more. Haynes manual calls for about 105 in-lbs (Which is less than 10 ft-lbs). I think that’s about hand tight which I already did now, but 2 things concern me right now. 1. The bolts don’t look as flush down as the other valve cover (Haven’t touched it yet) 2. I can still see a bit of blue from the gasket. Shouldn’t the valve cover squeeze it down I didn’t use a torque wrench because of limited space. I feel like it needs more tightening but I’m scared of breaking a bolt 😩
Hey coolant is low then full again... On grand cherokee 4.0 what's up? Changed engine oil, nothing milky to insinuate blown head gasket (what I have been reading).. no milky under radiator cap, nor in radiator... Any ideas ?
You do not need an air ratchet you can use a regular ratchet. I've used a shop vaccum before if there is a lot of burnt oil on the rockers. Hope this helps you out.
The gasket is fine, the gasket is what will seal the oil from leaking. Thank you for watching our video on how to replace your 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee valve cover gasket on a 4.0 engine.
Online resources are saying that it is 85 INCH lbs. Start from the middle of the valve cover and work your way in a criss cross pattern towards the ends. Use a blue Felpro gasket. Hope this helps you out.
A little too detailed well done however always put the most difficult/in this case rear bolt in first far less likely to Cross thread lots of wiggle room that way
Bad design, engine cramped The most distressing thing is the electrical plug that does not drain easily and I break it as a result Also, the raw materials of the pipes are poor and dry out as a result of the heat and crack. I don't understand why they deliberately did that with the jeep, even though it's a great car Also, there is an important matter which is that the company does not follow up on its agents in our Middle East region Insignificant agents sell spare parts at very, very high prices, and do not provide complete parts It seems that the company is not interested in the success of its cars in our countries, the lack of follow-up has failed many cars and made them unwanted and even hated. Success is achieved by Tweita to the extent that any other car just mentioning it is a nightmare, as simplicity, durability, durability, availability of spare parts and fuel economy are all the share of Japanese cars, especially Toyota. As for me, I love the pocket, and she does not love me. Greetings and thanks
@@HomeownerRepair ok thx I just bought the new gasket and was told by the parts store to use sealent too but I gave him a look because of the rubber stops on the cover andvyou cannot tighten hard to let the sealent mesh

A true Jeep head paints the cover a bright color😊
lol..Yes bright colors are popular.
@HomeOwnerRepair I was only disappointed that you and him mention or show how to replace the pcv valve grommets on the valve covet

I would advise putting a towel in the mass airpro sensor when it's open.

What did you clean the valves with??
The valves were fine. If you take the valve cover off and you fine a lot of burnt oil and crud sitting on everything you could use a shop vac to carefully remove it. Hope this helps you out.

It would probably be around 300 bucks
im in virginia, they want 1800 to do it.
@@likealayup 1800 for a valve cover gasket 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 or a head job?
To change the valve cover gasket do you need to drain the oil?
No you do not need to drain the oil if you are just replacing the valve cover gasket. Hope this helps you out.
So there is no specific torque rating or pattern/order to follow when tightening down the valve cover?

What would something like this run to do?
Probably couple hundred bucks including parts.

Is the radiator fluid level up and is the over flow bottle topped off?
If it's leaking will it cause the engine to leak oil.
Yes, oil may leak out of a bad gasket.
Good stuff yall👌. What method did you guys use to clean the cylinder head side and the valve cover itself?
We used some brake cleaner on the underside of the valve cover to clean it off.
Btw what if no air rachet, for crud ...how can it be cleaned?
You do not need an air ratchet you can use a regular ratchet. I've used a shop vaccum before if there is a lot of burnt oil on the rockers. Hope this helps you out.
You don't need RTV anywhere?
The gasket is fine, the gasket is what will seal the oil from leaking. Thank you for watching our video on how to replace your 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee valve cover gasket on a 4.0 engine.
Thank you. I'm so use to putting RTV where the cylinder head meets the block. 😊

Wish the 4.7 was this easy
The 4.7s not the greatest motor in these. The 5.9 on the other hand waaaaahhh...lol
Ah yes, the hood seal strip, where 10mm sockets go to die
Bwaaahhh..YUP!
Might as well replace the garments on the cover well your at it.

Why didn't you use sealant on the valve cover ?
We used a new gasket. The gasket is what seals the valve cover to the head.
