good point - this exactly is what I'm going to do. As I already mentioned in my comment, there's always confusion if PCV or CCV valves are installed front/back - in my 1998 4.0 these valves definitely look different from the outside. So what do you have in your valve cover ? Thanks !
@JoeVizethum , I agree . those 2 little valve cover inlets - the ccv & pcv suckers , in retrospect & hilariously , were the most stubborn things to remove from my '95 i6 ( xj w/ 390k original milage by me) valve cover of anything I've maintained in the cherokee in all these years. They were overdue for replacement ( the front is ccv / rearmost is pcv ) & had cracked around the base of the 90° angle tube on top so , battling to break it away + leverage it up - WITHOUT dropping any chunks of it into valve cover lest I have a 1hr job become a 5 hr job - took some slow patient work. this is a solid video of this process. Even uses the proper fel-pro gasket set. what may help others w/ aging inline6 4.0l engines is to be very aware that 20-25 yrs of driving & age will yield many of the hose or wiring or vacuum lines dryrotted / brittle / weakened. That means that the same harness loom he removed in video might not be as structurally sound as the video XJs were . I've had tiny planned maintenance sessions that were 1 or 2 hour processes turn into day or week projects when something like that breaks or something. So, analyze your i6 & go thru proposed action steps you'll follow BEFORE you actually do the work can reveal hidden gotchas & save you some unexpected , additional labor. thnks for video of this common maintenance routine!
I get to do mine soon, same model and year as yours. Really good content and also very informative compared to most other videos I've found. Keep up the good work!
This is a great video and has helped me decide to do this job at home. Do you have any part ordering info on the aluminum spacers you mentioned? I found the Fel-pro gasket and grommets with trouble but wasn't clear on those aluminum spacers. Thanks.
I'm not sure if you can order them, might take some searching. But if you have the old ones and take them out of the old grommets then you should be able to reuse them.
@@OutJeeping Thanks for the advice. Hadn't started the project yet so wanted to check and see if it was something I wanted to order ahead of time. Love the videos you do. I also have a 98XJ so this video was perfect!
I have many video covering the engine where you'll just have to search through. But here is a video where i go over the top end of the engine. ua-cam.com/video/EF1oIzUCLmE/v-deo.html
.....nice and helpful video ! Also have a 1998 4.0 - there's always confusion if PCV or CCV valves installed front/back - so what do you have in your valve cover ? Thanks !
CCV should be towards the front and PCV towards the rear. CCV has a one way valve that takes gases out of the engine without oil and sends it to the air box to get burned up. PCV does a similar job but is vacuum drawn from the intake manifold.
Question for you...the vacuum hose in the rear connects the ccv to the manifold...do you know where to get that middle piece? I have the rubber hose attachments...I have a 2001 WJ with the 4.0...any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
Nice Video!! One question tho: when i removed my old gasket, the oval shape hole on the gasket was at the rear and the circle shape hole was at the front. I notice that you put the oval shape to the front and the circle shape to the rear of the engine. Was my old gasket on wrong or this doesn’t matter ?
Nice video, but in my 2000 Cherokee I replace the water pump and now the inlet tube from the water pump is to close to the engine making this kind of work a pain in the A55 thanks to Car Quest brand water pump 😬
Thanks for the video Austin, I thot your XJ was a 2001 did you just get a 98? I have a 98 and would rather have it than a new one. Also, does it ever get warm where you live? I live in Florida where we burn up doing this kind of work.
I got this 98xj a couple months ago for a daily driver but still have my lifted 01. I'm from Wisconsin and winter seems to hit 3 weeks early so it's already 18 degrees outside.
@@OutJeeping I wasn't trying to come off as a dick, I should've elaborated lol.. the lighting at the beginning of the video makes it look like VHS quality
I just did mine. Previous owner said it was leaking… the driver side screw I could unscrew with my fingers… as I was trying to torque the screws to spec they seemed to get going.. I hope threads arnt stripped
Damn are you 18 feet tall? Are you standing on something? You can reach every part of that engine with ease, I can barely reach the back of the head on my 4.0 I'm 5"10

great video! thank you! changing this gasket seemed daunting at first, but you made it seem so much easier. thank you!
Another great video. Lost my XJ in a wreck, but helped me on my WJ.
Thank you for making the video. Followed your way of changing the valve cover gasket it worked perfectly!
Your video was very helpful, had no problems replacing old valve cover gasket with a new one. Thanks!!!!
Bout to do this in the next day or two cause bad oil leak. Thank u for posting this. Gonna make this super easy.

@Forrest Noel Flixportal
@Lucca Jesus thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it!
@Forrest Noel happy to help xD
Great video! Gives me the confidence and motivation I needed to do the replacement on my own 2001 Jeep WJ! You've earned a sub here! Cheers! :)
Dang.. you had a lot easier time than I did. The braided ground strap on the back of the head was a pain to get around on my 97.
I'm sure you could've unbolted the strap from the firewall.
You are freaking awesome if you can teach a 34 year old nub like me you can teach anyone
9:00 holder for heater core hoses . Where can we buy one?thx
What if the leak is one step further down? Not that rubber gasket but the next level Down? Is that the head gasket? Many thanks for the great video.
Yup that would be the head gasket.

Excellent info. Thank you
Dude that was great, thank you
Great video.. seems pretty easy now lol
How many foot lbs for valve cover bolts? My book says 85 lbs.... But two bolts broke and one got swallowed by gromet....
Its 85 inch pounds or 7 foot pounds.
👀

O
Great video, thank you for making/ posting it.
Same process for coil packs I’m assuming ?
Yep, all you need to do to remove coil packs is remove throttle cables and heater core lines and it should pop out.
Do you know why we use the spacers?
So it doesn't compress the gasket too much and to prevent the bolt from getting swallowed by the grommet.
Question for you...the vacuum hose in the rear connects the ccv to the manifold...do you know where to get that middle piece? I have the rubber hose attachments...I have a 2001 WJ with the 4.0...any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
If they don't have it on rockauto then my next guess would be eBay or the junkyard.
Great video thank you for sharing!!
hello, how long do you think this job should take?
About 30min if you are comfortable with this type of work.
Will this gasket fit a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee
If it has the 4.0L it should fit.
I torqued it down to spec but I can still see the valve cover gasket. Did I do something wrong? Used grommets and same bolts
It is a thicker gasket so you will be able to see it from the side.
@@OutJeeping Thanks for replying! I realized I left the old gasket on when I took the cover off to re-fit the new one. Runs like a charm
You save my time bro thank u.
Dope video man

It shouldn't matter, the holes have a little extra clearance to line it up to the head.
Hello there Austin, any torque on those bolts ?
Thanks
Im not sure exactly but not much at all, maybe 5-10ft/lbs.
These should be torqued at 55in-lbs

Probably nothing to do with this unless you unplugged something and forgot to plug it back in.
The light went away this morning so, I am happy...thank you for the awesome video, for taking the time to record it and upload it!

Wasn't to bad but the engine was oily so I did along with an oil change.
