Found this video while researching the history of my 1952 M38 Jeep. I was ecstatic to see the Jeep used in this film is the one I own. I purchased it from Fred Edmonson’s granddaughter last September. Not only do I have a little more history of the Jeeps timeline, I also got to know a little about Fred from the interview, makes the Jeep that more special to me has the new caretaker.
I enjoyed this video. I’m a truck driver and just loaded stone that is now doing business on the north end of the runway by the large hanger still there. I could tell this had to be an army Air Force base but didn’t know the history…..until I looked up this video. Thanks again!
Fantastic documentary! I became aware of Herington recently, following a runner from London, UK who is walking/running across the USA. He started in Miami, FL almost a year ago, and is passed through Herington, KS recently. His name is Seb Cam. Anywho, I looked up Herington on Wikipedia, and heard about the air base. Thanks for this.
Thanks, Rick, for creating this. Well done! I really enjoyed seeing Teen Donahue and I think I even saw my former father-in-law, Clarence Schultz, in a picture of Beechcraft workers, when Mrs. Weatherman was speaking.
Thank you Richard, Like Herington ,B-29's use to come to Vernam Field on training missions. It too was closed in 1949 and most of it's surplus shipped back to the States and some sold off locally in Jamaica. The runway was used for motor racing but drug trafficker took advantage of it too. In the 70's the Cuban's build a school their and their are leaks that the Soviet's wanted build their base their. these days most of the land is in sugar cane but the present government want to torn it into an airport. My grand mother use to operate a shop south of the base during the war and many of those US servicemen were her costumers. I would a documentary be done about it too.
The B-29 Museum in Pratt Kansas would like a copy of this video for showing in our B-29 Theatre. Who do we contact to obtain a copy?As of 09/08/19 still no reply ...Can anyone else help us get a copy?

My Mother worked at the Herington Air Base while my Dad was in the Philippines during WWII.
How did the B-29s get delivered to Herington from Boeing? (Who ferried them?)
