Ankle fractures can occur in the tibia and/or fibula, as well as the other 26 bones in the foot and vary in severity due to the positioning or type of injury. Unlike sprains, which stress or tear ligaments, fractures vary in severity from a “crack” in the bone to complete separation or break in multiple pieces.
All ankle injuries, especially ones where a fracture is suspected need to be evaluated by a physician with standard x-rays taken or other advanced testing (MRI or CT).

I have a toddler who has a buckle fracture of her first metatarsal at the growth plate. She hardly has evidence of a break but I pushed for the imaging and they found it! The urgent care actually missed it on the xray and sent us home. I suppose they always send it elsewhere for review so they called us in 30 minutes after we left and told us it was broken . My first question is. Are they likely to cast her leg? And also I really had to fight for the images I feel it’s possible the doctor was so adamant it wasn’t broken that he was looking exclusively for a clear break is a buckle fracture easily missed ? She’s 2 years old I feel a buckle fracture common
