This was one of the most requested albums I saw for Metal March and even metalheads I know personally were telling me to check out Death so it was a given. A solid album that only seems to be growing on me since this first reaction
chuck schuldiner (shul-dee-ner) wasnt only a vocalist - he was "death". it was his band, he was the guitarist, songwriter, composer and the moving force behind that band. we sadly lost him to brain cancer. in regards to lyrics - as he stated - all he writes is always about his feelings. symbolic being about his nostalgia for his childhood, crystal mountain - about his crazy karen of a neighbour who happened to be a christian fanatic, sacred serenity - about his pets and all the animals, 1000 eyes about what seemed to be dystopia in the 1996 - surveillance cameras everywhere, empty words - about how people say a lot without putting any meaning in words they are saying, making empty promises etc, and perennial quest is like a farewell song cause this album supposed to be their last album, chuck always had issues with labels and at that point he was fed up and decided to finish it with death and move on with his other project - control denied. so that song was like a goodbye message to all his fans.
Wow I wasn't aware he did most of the heavy lifting but that makes this record even more impressive. Thanks for the input, adds some depth for sure to the album
people comparing death to screamo hurts my soul, bands today are mostrly garbage, they think metal is about pretending you are pucking on the mic, its music that lacks musicians... Death did it first and still to this day did it best. listen to the album The Sound of Perseverance, it is a masterpiece.
It's actually the other way around. Bobby actually did a video recently where he plays along to all of his Symbolic solos. Practically every stand out solo on this album is actually Bobby rather than Chuck. As a general rule of thumb with Death, the shreddy or tappy solos are Chuck, and the more technical / proggy solos are the other guitarist. Not always the case, but a good general rule.
the drummer is GENE HOGLAND who also plays in some other metal bands you may encounter such as TESTAMENT STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and METALPOCALYPSE his nickname is THE ATOMIC CLOCK because of his speed and precision
Listening to the greatest work of Chuck Schuldiner in 2024 for the first itme? I envy you! I'm listening to it for most half of my life, he's a pure genius. Absolutely brilliant.
Yea this album is so incredible. Easily one of the best metal albums I've ever heard. I'm gonna check out the rest of his work once I've fully taken in this album and everything it has to offer
I think you're confused. I listen to the entire album front to back in one sitting and edit the footage down to my thoughts and reactions. I can't stream a whole album on UA-cam without repercussions

Chuck did most of the solos IIRC, but Bobby also had a couple solos on this album.

Check out Death - Human album. It’s an amazing thrash album with fretless bass, guitar riffs and high intensity drumming.
