You didn't talk about my favorite part of DS, the enemy zoo where you could look at different enemies that you've seen existing in their natural environment and interacting with other enemies from other environments. It's the best!
That sounds so cute!!
The zoo is such a unique feature of any game. I’m not even sure if there’s even anything like this. Like, actually giving thought about where and how the enemies normally live without them actually being enemies, while still exhibiting normal enemy behavior is such a creative idea that I think anyone should experiment in.
This mechanic was something I majorly enjoyed; the concept was unique, and I always loved Enemy Collections in games (Kirby 64 was probably the first I remember doing it), due to how it's basically a collectathon but for enemies. However, there is a major issue with the way it was executed in Yoshi's Island DS.
To unlock the enemies in the Museum, you have to defeat or hit them with an Egg. For most enemies, this isn't a problem, since many enemies you will take out with Eggs naturally. But some enemies; you likely in most standard Scenarios, won't even think of using an Egg on them, because they are ineffective or seem like a waste. Several enemies are invincible and don't die from getting hit with an egg, but they are still unlockable in the Museum if you randomly shoot them, and some enemies hitting them with an Egg is actually more wasteful then just eating them. There's also some enemies which don't really feel like enemies at all, more just terrain hazards (like the haunted furniture) which makes their inclusion seem awkward.
The Giant enemies are some of the worst for this, as most of the time you basically have to take a death to hit them with the egg; due to their involvement with chase sequences where if you don't rush, you die. There are also some enemies who only appear once (Like the Shy-Guy riding a Rocket); and if you don't hit them with an egg; you'll be scratching your head wondering which enemy you are missing in the museum. Speaking of the Shy-Guy Riding a Rocket; the Museum has a Shy-Guy Exhibit, but the Shy-Guy Riding a Rocket isn't in the Shy-Guy Exhibit. Instead, it's in the Airborne enemies exhibit. I GET that it is an Airborne enemy; but it feels like it wasn't thought out well.

@@thealientree3821 This was definitely a reason I loved this game as a kid and it reminds me a lot of the pikmin 2 piklopedia

I don't remember Yoshi's Island DS being bad, I remember it being fun, not as good as the first by any means, but good.

If anything, Yoshi’s New Island taught us something very important: Yoshies can’t sing.

Alright so here's what happened. Yoshi's Island happened, baby bowser was thwarted. From there, Bowser from the future went back in time to make the events of Yoshi's Island DS happen. But after THAT, Mario went back in time to stop Yoshi's Island DS from happening, creating the timeline with Yoshi's New Island.
Damn that looks canon.
Yes
so it's Mario's fault new island exists.
@@StafkiGTN better than DS tho amirite
@@callinater6133 DS ain't that good but new is way worse
I actually grew up on Yoshi's Island DS, never playing the original. I loved it when I was a kid, but I guess that's because I had nothing to compare it to
Me too i feel like i have bad taste when he trashes it
Yea the original was better
Only thing I didn't like that much about ds is the music in comparison to the original. There is a hack though that adds the music from the first to the ds.
I played the original Yoshi's Island (actually a GBA port) and Yoshi's Island DS growing up and they're both awesome.
@@Mr.Face222 Same. I enjoyed Yoshi's Island DS and 100% it, but it left me less satisfied than Yoshi's Island GBA.
I actually quite like Yoshi's Island DS. I mean, it pales in comparison to the original Yoshi's Island, but it's still a really solid game. I think it does a really good job emulating the original style while adding new elements when appropriate. It feels like a proper sequel. I also like the multiple-babies mechanic (though I wish Baby Luigi was available, as I feel like there was no reason for having him be kidnapped again when all the other babies were kidnapped, too, but that's nitpicking). Yoshi's New Island was good, too, but I don't think it was as good as the first two. It was just ok. Also, a lot of the soundtrack is bad, and I hate the Bowser fight for Bowser fight's sake at the end, but AntDude talked about that.
The ds one is really flipping hard unless you have loads of lives
Duncan McRae yoshis island DS was my first DS game and actually got me into video games at a young age. Contrary to popular opinion, I too really enjoyed the multiple baby mechanic. This game will always have a special place in my heart
Duncan McRae it was one of my first ds lite games and it was hard as balls didn’t even think i beat it
First 2 sentences can be said about a lot of new Nintendo games
The castle/fortress theme is trash in Yoshis island ds, don't get me wrong, I like the game and personally give the game a 7.5/10, but that theme is trash, it sounds like cave music, not fortress/castle music, and not even good cave music.
We can say, that New Island is a interquel between the Original and DS.
So the timeline should look like this:
YI -> NYI -> YIDS
Piotrek1113 topsy turvy
Where is Yoshi's Story in the timeline? It has Baby Bowser too.
It's called midquel
12:33 I was always under the impression that, from a timeline perspective, the original came first then new Island and then DS.
So it's basically Yoshi's Island 1 1/2

Am I the only one who likes yoshi’s island ds? (That’s one of my favorites in the ds library alongside New super Mario bros,Pokemon platinum,Mario kart ds,Sonic rush, and Kirby squeak squad)
Squeak Squad before Super Scribblenauts, Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol, and (more close to home) Kirby Super Star Ultra?
Also, Sonic Rush...without Colors along with it. And New Super Mario Bros instead of maybe Super Mario 64 DS. Wah?
Anyway, been looking to increase my DS library. Glad to know I shouldn't get New since people seem to agree on that one, but what about DS?
I would go back to get the original...but I don't have that console, and I am not dedicated enough to go backwards in console. I DO like that artstyle, though. Reminds me of Super Mario 63. Fun times...
Mr.Feather130 it was my first video game I’ve ever played. I’ve got quite the soft spot for it
its pretty good
No, I loved it too and plenty of comments are saying they remember it fondly too. I think it's more likely that people who have a massive nostalgia boner for the first game like to rag on it for seemingly very little reason. I tried the original and honestly? I just kinda got bored so. I'd say DS is solid.

>Yoshi's Island DS came out in 2006, eleven years since the first game.
And twelve years ago from now.
So the first game is 23 years old now!
That's weird to think about. The sequel is now older than the original, when the sequel came out.
The fact that Mario's been wearing that iconic red cap since birth makes this hilarious.

Yoshi’s Island DS is so good. The main boss theme in that game…Don’t even get me started on that. That’s the best part of the game.
Oh boy I hope trilogy doesn’t include New Island. Time to prepare my ears for hell
The two are equally as awfull.
Nah, average at worst. Just because they don’t measure up to the original dosen’t mean they are bad
Pedro Gonzales I couldn't agree more, DS really felt like the natural evolution of the original with an actually interesting addition in the form of the other babies altering Yoshi's abilities. The giant egg bullshit in New Island immediately seemed lazy and uninspired by comparison.
Inconsistent artstyle, segmented level design, bad music (just because New had worst music, that doesnt mean this had good music, just check the castle and boss music) step dificult curve. DS is pretty bad, I say worst than New, just a little bit better than Yoshi´s universal gravitation.
The Sprites on DS came from 4 diferent sources; Stright from the original (many enemies that didn´t apear in touch and go) From Yoshi Touch and GO (Yoshi, Shyguys, Kamek, tilesets) Drawn for this game (the ugliest designs usually like the Kangaroo) Rotoscoped 3D models (that ugly bowser from the ending) Its like if you made a Mario game mixing sprites from SMB1, SMB2, SMB3 and SMW and the fact that I could tell that is proff of its lack of art direction. And what I mean of the dificulty curve, is not that its hard , is that is to easy until the last level were tha dificulty raises way to much.
"what about Yoshi's Wooly World?" um...what about Yoshi's Story and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy? :P
Wooly World uses the Yoshi's Island gameplay style. Story and Topsy Turvy are their own beasts
@@DarkLink1996. Actually yoshis crafted world was pretty much yoshis story style except without the fruit gimmick like yes it was a sequel to wolly world but I feel like they wanted to do the style of yoshi story with the gameplay of yoshi Island which was great if they ever make a sequel to crafted world they should do that again and also make it longer
@@keithmorrison8373 Crafted wasn't in the conversation. It wasn't even out yet. But yes, there are two main camps of Yoshi Games: Traditional and Experimental.
Island, DS, New, and Wooly make up the Traditional camp
Story, Tospy Turvy, and Crafted make up the Experimental camp.
The best part of Yoshi DS is the inclusion of a specific run button. I don't like running all the time like in the original, so it's a welcome addition.

The part where you talked about Yoshi pooping out a gigantic egg and destroying his butt in the process... your choice of words left me in a giggling fit. Good job AntDude ^_^ now I will never look at Yoshi the same way again!
All things considered though, Yoshi's Island DS & New Island are no where near as memorable and fun as Story and Woolly World, but on they're own they're pretty fun adventures. Aside from the jarring plothole of how Bowser can just travel through time. Meh.
i agree, as a kid i played yoshi's island all the time, i had the gba port. and with wooly world me and my friend stayed up all night playing it through much more memorable.

I also had the GBA version and loved it. Yoshi's Woolly World is honestly one of my favourite games.
You have some good opinions
VistaCorp ヂフ韻
Thank you!
Hrm... Yeah, I was looking at expanding my DS library. Missed some great games on my first run-through. Would you recommend going backwards to get Yoshi's Island DS (I am not going backwards to an older console)?
I remember Yoshi's New Island. I didn't like it much. The game felt like.... the Sonic 4 of Yoshi's Island... it's very subtle but the game controls worse than it does in the other 2 games. Not just the egg throwing, but also the turning and acceleration felt a little sluggish too.
The visuals.... they screwed it up. The "watercolor texture" style Antdude refers to? That was meant to be only for the backgrounds. Using it for the foreground stuff instead of the simple color sprites makes it look very off.
I would sooner recommend Yoshi's Wooly World, as that's a better game than both Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island.
It doesn't hurt that YWW seemed to take more like Yoshi's Story than Yoshi's Island.
That’s exactly what it was like, it wasn’t fun to play, yet played it safe the entire way through. They really messed up, they should have made a sequel instead of a retelling of the first game. At least Wooly World was good and hopefully the upcoming Yoshi game will be good.
The baby bowser boss fight scared the the soul out of me I did not expect it coming

What's next????? "I will never ever understand these reasons people give for praising the Super Mario World games"???? Do you love the Super Mario Games with a passion even though you love Yoshi's Island DS which is admittedly a good video game while Yoshi's New Island is nowhere near good (IRYO if you like it, okay???).

I found them better than the original.
The original Yoshi island have some really long and boring levels simetimes.
Same, it was miles better than Yoshi's Story, New Island, or the Kirby's Epic Yarn Rip-off...and it gave the original run for the money. It was only too hard and unpolished really. Great mechanics otherwise. I used to play it all the time, then it got stolen.
Ds is better than new island by far and I respect the wierd stuff they put in but I enjoy the original island way more just because it feels way faster.

I grew up with yoshi's island ds, and to me it's great. But the og one looks more artistic.
I played a (totally not emulated) version of Yoshi’s Island for the GBA and it was one of the most amazing GBA games I’ve played (even if it isn’t a GBA game).

You should add Yoshi Topsy-Turvy to your next Yoshi video with Woolly World. I think it was very creative with the gyroscope/tilt sensor. Moreover, ever since I played Yoshi's Island on GBA, I was hankering for more and it sort of did the job for me when I was a kid.
Keep it up BOI.

I always thougt island ds was actually really good it’s one of my favourite ds games
Being someone who grew up in the early to mid 2000’s, I didn’t grow up with Yoshi’s Island, being able to play it as an adult and DS being my first, it naturally earned a soft spot in my game library.
I personally quite enjoy Yoshi's Woolly World (well, Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World). Though simple and overall easy, the music is good (and the amiibo are nice) and overall seems like a reskinned version of the original. I haven't played the original Yoshi's Island, but Poochy and Yoshi's World is a more than adequate replacement for me.
Yoshi's wolly world and Yoshi's Island are completely different games, they have similar gameplay styles but the stages are all completely different
Oliver Hees Woolly World was a lot more enjoyable on the Wii U for me (having played both versions). The game was just made for a home console in mind, and things like the graphics were lost in the transition to the 3DS. I also wouldn’t say the game is easy when you’re trying to go for %100 (especially trying to get all those collectibles and full health on the special stages was brutal).
I like Yoshi's island 2 for the most part. I was just disappointed you don't use Wario and Bowser in the other levels and that you fought Baby Bowser. Seriously that boss fight made no sense.
"2" does not exist.
4:04 Shouldn't it fit better Baby Sonic ?
I think it's worth mentioning that the 2 later Yoshi's Island games aren't made by Nintendo, but outsourced to Artoon and Arzest.
Part of the reason why neither Yoshi's Island DS or New Island come remotely close to the near-perfection of the original is because they were both outsourced to other developers. DS was developed by Artoon, who no longer exists, while New Island was developed by Arzest, which tells you just how much Nintendo really cared about those two games. To me, Wooly World is the closest to a worthy successor to the original. I may not agree with every design decisions behind that game - I don't appreciate having to rub my nose against every square inch of every screen to find collectibles that used to be in plain sight in the original, and the bosses are just plain unacceptable - but it gets my respect for not rehashing the same plot for the fourth time while still remaining familiar.
well Donkey Kong and Kirby have been outsourced to other companies and those games were good so I don't think its that Nintendo didn't care about the Yoshi games and while Yoshi's island is great I think near-perfection is maybe to much credit.
yeah i very much disagree that being outsourced in of itself is a reason, but its very likely that nintendo heavily limited those companies's creative control over the game (a la, paper mario on the wii u)
Can you elaborate on why you dislike the bosses in wooly world because I have beat the original yoshi's island an unhealthy amount of times and the only problem I can think of is the reused bosses.
When DK was outsourced to other developers, they were honestly really cool. DK Jungle Climber was really good.
it's just that Artoon/Artzest aren't too good. they can make a solid game, but it won't be too good.
Interestingly Artoon primarily consisted of ex Sega employees from Sonic Team and Team Andromeda, and Arzest is primarily made up ex Sega and Artoon employees.
*Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is one of the greatest video games ever made.*
Guys guys GUYS!
In Smash Ultimate, there's a remix of the Yoshi's New Island theme, and it trades the kazoos for tropical-sounding steel drums... and it's actually amazing.
The DS actually had a lot of titles many people apparently forgot existed (or are just criminally underrepresented on UA-cam as the main demografic making videos often didn't even own handhelds beyond the GBC). I mean seriously, how many people talk about Spirit Tracks, Megaman ZX Advent or GTA Chinatown Wars compared to other entries of their respective series? And these titles are good, awesome and extremely awesome respectively.
The first time I heard baby wario’s cry I could not sleep. Note that I was 8 when I got the game.
You're more of a baby than the babies we'll ever see.
Well what do you expect 8 year-old me to do each time I hear wario cry XD
As annoying as the baby Mario characters' cries are, the most annoying baby cry from the Mario franchise is one of the most annoying voices of all time and from Baby Peach. After all, it is the very high (in a prissy way) voice of Princess Peach, which thus makes it as overrated as sin. What I am saying is my opinion (which might be more than just that), not a fact.

Yoshi's Island was so much fun. Even at its hardest it was still fun. I made it a point to get all 100's in every level to have all six stars on the start screen.
17:21 Why are you calling him Bowser Jr? That's Baby Bowser, Bowser's younger self.
amazing game indeed. i can replay it now and still be jammin to the tunes and art
I don't get the hate for DS. I played it before the original so I have a bit of bias. Yes, this is a case of "can't beat the original" but the game inherently isn't bad at all. I do agree it does seem kinda fan made though. The music can be repetitive but it's still good. And aside from Bowser and the kangaroo, I don't see anything wrong with the sprites.
That said, New Island is like anything else Nintendo made with "New" in the title. Lazy and gimmicky.
It isn't gimmicky they added like 2 or 3 new things that don't do anything interesting.
I wish it was gimmicky because as it stands new island feels unfinished and uninslired.
No, the sprites are definitely in a different style. Yoshi, for example, is a bit softer with shading. The purple pirrana plant doesn't have an outline and also seems a bit softer, perhaps the lack or little hue shifting. Some enemies seem to have thinner outlines. Bowser is obviously very off. There were some other sprites too but I can't remember em.
9:45 IS THAT A BABY OLIMAR
Am I the only one who thinks that the babies crying is kind of cute.
SAVE KIRBY FROM THE METROID!
I have soooo much nostalgia for Yoshi’s Island DS. I played that game so much as a kid. It’s fun, adorable, & challenging. Seeing baby versions of these characters was cool, especially since it’s the only time we’ve ever seen Baby Wario & DK. It even adds some lore to the Mario world, which I love. I will agree though that The Cave That Never Ends is the absolute worst.
I played YNI back when it came out but had no idea there was one before that. I'll have to check it out. I don't think the games are that bad. Sometimes things just don't hold up to the original but I still found the game to be fun. It takes me back to my childhood and for that at least, I'm grateful.

"Somehow, Palpatine has returned"
"the GBA version of Yoshi's Island is not as good..."
how? it's like the same game, but with more levels.
Screen Crunch in the gba
Screen crunch makes some enemies much harder to take out then they were on the SNES version. Adding in Yoshi's Sound effects from Yoshi's Story also can grain some people's nerves (though it didn't bother me), and the newly added levels were either stupid easy, or feel like they were designed by fans of Kaizo.
One of the people invoked in the Yoshi’s Island sequels is also behind Sonic the Hedgehog.
What Sonic game?
I loved Yoshi's Island DS, warts and all. The constant easter eggs like the chompers from Donkey Kong Jr. kept things surprising and fun
Why did they keep shoehorning in these time travel plots into the endgames of this series?

“And suddenly Bowser as an old man appears from another universe!”
15:03 the original ones were easy too
One thing I just now noticed about Yoshi's Island DS: you know the spots where you swap out babies? They're literally baby changing stations.
I've played through Yoshi's Island DS so many times since I got it as a kid, I never realized it was a sequel, I always assumed it was some kinda remake. While I love this game I'm glad to know there's a better one, I'm gonna have to dig out a copy of the original from somewhere
15:17 The way you said that was too funny lol
I honestly didn’t even know any of these games existed. Only Yoshi’s island I knew about, and it’s my all time fave game for more reasons than it just being the game!
Yoshi doesnt deserve his own games after that tax fraud.
Its been confirmed
Nothing will ever beat the original Yoshi's Island. I still replay it on my Switch because its just a ton of fun. I don't even care for the sequels but still have them
You know what Yoshi's Island DS reminds me of, for some reason?
Lost Vikings.
So, am I the only one who thought the twist ending of Yoshi’s New Island’s final boss was cool? I mean, going back in time to kill your rival in their infant years seems smart to me, and in combination with Mario overseeing your adventure as a pipe to make sure you’re okay creates an interesting conflict in my eyes. But who knows, maybe I’m the dumb one here.
Considering how the Mario franchise is, I wouldn't say it's that bad of a twist. Wacky and zany stuff happens all the time.
Yeah, but that's a twist you're supposed to lead up to, not pull out of nowhere at the very end
My daughter loves Yoshi's Island DS. It's her favorite game.

In my opinion, it feels like Yoshi's Story with RTX on
I was probably the biggest Yoshi fan back in the day when the original game came out, and years later, when I played the DS version, I couldn't believe how much it pissed me off. Ya' done me dirty Nintendo!!! Ya done me dirty!!!

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I really like Yoshi's Island DS. It's my favorite game in the series because I really liked the different mechanics the different babies gave. It made the game about more than just pure platforming. I later went back and played the original Yoshi's Island, and I honestly liked it less because it lacked that. That said, given that it came long before DS, I have to respect it for kick-starting the series and for being a wonderful game in its own right. And like AntDude kept mentioning, its final boss theme blows every other one in the series out of the water.
Yoshi's New Island? I kid you not, it took me a year to get to the end of it because every time I picked it up I was just bored stiff. It's perfectly solid in terms of gameplay and mechanics, but it doesn't add anything new to speak of. It just felt like the first game, but now it's on the 3DS.
Also, the kazoos offended me. Not because I dislike kazoos, but because these kazoos just did not sound good in my opinion. I still remember waiting on the title screen, remembering the pretty flutes of the hidden title themes of the first two games and looking forward to hearing this game's take on the idea... then wincing as my ears began to bleed. So much disappointment.

Yo. I have such font memories of the DS game as a kid. It was my cousin's game, which after borrowing, I lost at a supermarket. I felt bad so I bought her another copy but she was was super cool about it and just let me keep it. I remember fucking about so much in the museum trying to collect entires for all the enemies. Good times dude.
2:35 Yoshi's Story (N64): _"Am I a joke to you?"_
Yoshi's Story is more of it's own thing (tho, it was planned to be a sequel)
