It may not fit in with the rest of the series that spawned it, but Yoshi''s Island has certainly left its mark either way. Let's figure out why this game is great together.
Check out our last episode on Metroid Prime: • What's So Great About ...
As always, thanks for watching!

This game absolutely stands the test of time
no u
That it does
The art style of this game and its implementation in pixels is still unrivalled, imo.
There are two hacks of it. I like it til today
Best Nintendo published SNES platformer. So imaginative and magical.
The sprite art is absolutely superb. God I love it.
I didn't play this game until I got the classic snes mini and I absolutely loved it. A friend of mine had this game back when it came out in 1995, but I didn't have it myself, so I just watched him play back then and barely played it myself. I really wish I would have bought it myself back then because this game is amazing. This has got to be one of my favorite games ever now.
INSANELY underrated game and nothing after came close to it IMO. Every design choice is unexpected and a COMPLETE risk which I just respect the hell out of.
Underrated? Really? From where I sit, this is one of the most highly-praised games of the SNES, right up there with Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. If it IS underrated, it's only because it's an SNES game, and as time passes on people tend to forget or overlook how influential the games on this system were and still are.
I'm mad that they never made a cartoon for Yoshi's Island.
This game has garnered such praise over the years for its visuals and gameplay, it can be difficult to look back at the time this game was made and recognize how odd a proposition this is, to essentially make a Mario game where Mario is an infant and his dinosaur sidekick from Super Mario World is the actual main character. It's this kind of risky decisions that don't happen too often at Nintendo anymore. It's also kind of a shame that the Yoshi sub-series of games all fail to live up to this game for one reason or another, but that's for another video.
My 2nd favorite game of all time next to DKC2. I love this game, I'm actually playing through it again right now! I remember getting it for my birthday as a kid, and it annoying the hell out of my grandma because she couldn't stand the sound of baby mario crying!😂 Luckily, I'm much better at the game these days, and hardly ever have to deal with that sound at all. Did it for you, Grandma, I love you and miss you❤
Those are my two favorite games ever too. Great games!
Those were my first 2 video games that were mine and not hand me downs. The best!
Those are my favorite games too!
The backgrounds always sold it for me. I ended the game when it came out, but I was still new to the moving backgrounds...finally we were getting arcade level games at home. I thought Nintendo had colored the backgrounds...they were beautiful.
NES games were just hard and you had to figure them out, I even beat Yo Noid, but when this game came out, I think the first sound was what gripped me head on. Nintendo took care of business for real with this one.
This is by far my favorite video game ever made!!!
A great analysis of the progression in terms of gameplay mechanics, level design and different enemies that really must've been in the subconscious when playing this. Because it makes sense. I grew up more with Super Mario World, but am enjoying Yoshi's Island in recent years.
Final shoutout to the music. Once again, Koji Kondo slam dunks it with an almost entirely new soundtrack.
The art style is timeless.
The level design in Yoshi's Island is amazingly creative and has a stellar difficulty curve. I completely recommend trying this game, it is in my top 5 SNES games of all time and a true joy.
I never played this as a kid although some friends had it. I actually played it after buying the classic mini snes and I have to say this is the greatest game I have played on the snes - right up there with donkey Kong country 2 in my book.
This is a game ive always wanted to hug. I play it often as it’s just so beautiful to play, like being a kid in a playground in a field of flowers. A hand drawn world was the most comforting and magical experience Nintendo has ever thought up. It’s doesnt feel like a game filled with baddies since it’s so innocent. I forget about the world of politics, adulthood and so on. I just experience childhood. Such a magical game.
Regarding the escort gameplay, what sets this game apart is that it's only an escort mission in the most superficial of ways, as a plot setup. But mechanically, Mario isn't an external character/item thats colossally stupid and dies in two hits, he's an internal component of your player character. He's on Yoshi's back almost 100% of the time, with that only changing during a toady capture attack or a super star powerup.
I always figured the flutter jump was a reference to the blue yoshi's flight ability in Super Mario World, similar to how Yoshi's stomp is similar to the stomp the yellow yoshis did in Mario World. The melons, especially the red one, might be a reference to the red yoshis in Mario World having a ranged fire attack.
i would always just touch the fuzzys and run as fast as i can towards the goal. it helped that i really liked the effect.
Discovered your channel yesterday since the algorithm is pushing Metroid content.
Seriously glad I found it. Your videos are brilliant and apparently criminally underrated. I don't know if it's intentional but I feel like I'm watching YT content from 10 years ago. It's really a blessing.
Not played Yoshi's Island since it released, so this was one hell of a nostalgia trip. I'll have to revisit it on my Switch and play through it as an adult this time lol
Thanks for what you do, I hope your channel experiences exponential growth sometime soon!
This is probably the most underrated game EVER
This game is still my all time favorite game!
When i first played this game, i really didn't think it was good. Until the end. And man, this games was amazing. So much so, when the yoshi story was released kn the n64, i jump to get the game with thought. And we all know how that games was. 😢
Beautiful game from start to finish.
"What's so great about Yoshi's Island?"
Short answer, absolutely everything!
This game is classic. Only thing that took it so long to be recognized by most of the gaming community was, i think, it came out at the very end of the snes run. A lot of us were interested in the Playstation or Saturn by then
Touch fuzzy, get dizzy is a must play every time I load this game. What an acid trip for old Yoshi.
I need to beat this. I really enjoyed playing it
Best Mario game BY FAR
Really??
10000%
Two of the characters from this game that I can easily draw are one of the bosses you face which are Salvo (Seen In 1-8, 6-4 and 6-8) and Sluggy (Seen In 5-4). Sluggy’s my comfort boss due to how adorable she is next to Salvo and by the fact that she can’t hurt you when you touch her, unlike Salvo who spawns minions that hurt you.
This is peak 2d Mario. Theyve never come close since
Mario Wonder?
@@zachatck64not as good as
@@connor9568 I've never seen a worse opinion in my life
@@zachatck64 don’t care
@@zachatck64 Mario Wonder is amazing but it's not as good as this one.
Yoshi's Island was the absolute pinnacle of SNES's brilliance.
Great video, guy! It captured a lot of why I love this baby escorting game. It made me smile to the end!
I hadn't thought about the way the game softly introduces players to these mechanics - makes sense! this is one of my dearest games, and everything from the art, music, and gameplay feels great.
I never truly appreciated this game as a child. Having it called Super Mario World 2 really turned me off because I loved SMW so much. When I finally got around to playing this game, I loved it so much.
This was the first game I bought for my super nt. I remember it was a game id play when we'd go over to family friends house and always wishing I owned it lol
What’s great about it? Literally EVERYTHING
That helicopter transformation looks like something from a creepypasta.
The more time passes the more this game stands out as one of the best Super Mario games ever
SMW2 Yoshi's Island is so amazing that the SNES version couldn't be emulated until the Switch. Yep, that's right.
Lol no.
It was on the SNES mini.
SMW2 is my favourite Mario game, and one of my favourite platformers. It’s so creative with the art style, the gameplay, the music - every level you start makes you *wonder*, what fun new thing will there be? And for the graphics, it almost doesn’t even look like a dated snes game. Just, wonderful.
This guy must have his thesaurus out when he’s writing the script for these videos. I like it.
loved this game and love your channel. Only recently discovered your content
Best platformer on the SNES!
2:20 "More curves and freeform designs"
😏 I see what you did there.
I 'figured' that someone else would notice that too.
10:45 free range eggsploration
Best, hidden channel. Algorithms be damned
Nothing but love for this game ❤
When I think "greatest games of all time," this is literally the first game that comes to my mind every single time. Spectacular aesthetic, music, gameplay, pacing, readability... every time I've played through this game has been a blast.
I was 6 when the SNES came out so I grew up with it and the classics of the early 90s and played nearly all of them and to this day, in the year of our lord 2024, I still can’t get into this game
Im in my 40s and just brought a snes mini and im currently playing this game im righr now on 3-5 this game is still as much fun now in 2024 as it back in the 90s
I disagree, although the story is about a escorting baby Mario, the mechanics of the game are totally not, it would be like saying you are escorting Donkey Kong when you play with Diddy, this is why your argument does not apply to this game, because it is not an escort mission, baby Mario is essentially a chance to avoid losing a live, similar to having a chance to recover Yoshi when you get hit in Super Mario World.
The main characteristics of an escort mission are to have a separate NPC with his own health bar that is controlled by the AI and actually targetable by the enemies.
Good video but how did you neglect to mention the music!
Great video. I really struggled with this game - I think I went in expecting something closer to the original Mario. I really need to go back and re-evaluate with perspective
2:20 to see the _curves_ of Yoshi's Island.. 😊
😆… wow, Good catch. I was laughing when he said 10:47 free range egg-sploration.
Yoshis island looks better than anything that came out on other consoles at the time in the 2d realm, its fun as hell to play.
Kinda surprised this video didn't cover _why_ the artstyle was developed to be like this :O
This is the SNES most visually stunning games and its timeless
This is my favorite Nintendo game and it’s not even close.
I love Yoshi's island!
First game I ever beat
Best Mario by far, perhaps it's my rose tinted glasses but I have the most loving memories of yoshies island compared to any other Mario game only luigies mansion even comes close, when I was 8 I could beat super Mario world in sub 20m but this game took more time and I loved every minute from the puzzles to THE BEST Mario soundtrack in existence
Great analysis!
I'm replaying it now 💖
like the other comments said great video keep it up and you’ll get even bigger
Good game but I much preferred the sunflower health meter of Yoshi's Story.
Perfect 2D-Platformer imo. ❤
One of my favorite games of thE NESU
It’s gorgeous
Awesome and underrated channel, keep up the good work! Would love to hear your opinion on Terraria.
It's the crying baby Mario for me
I like to compare this game to early episodes of Spongebob. Sure, it was made for kids, but the aesthetic made it sure that it could be enjoyed by all audiences. The music, the art style, the difficulty, it could all be appreciated when you’re older.
But the sequels, like post movie Spongebob, were made specifically for kids in mind. Not to say they’re necessarily horrible, but you can tell that these games are very very kid friendly and lost its touch.
I thought the speaker block was a pineapple my whole life. RIP
My left ear is still ticking the next morning. . .
Man you just had to be there in '95.
It's only one of the best games ever made.
Best Mario game ever!
This game was a lot more fun than Donkey Kong Country 2.
Level 1-7 explain why no one is going to find the last 4 red coins and I will give you a like on this video.
hidden winged cloud to grow the beanstalk up to the sky. then the coins were above the clouds
For the algorithm. ✊
Beginning song?
Love this game but I just can't get passed the crying Mario it drives me crazy
That was the point of the mechanic though...mission accomplished and then some.
Then don't lose him ROFL
The only thing I don't like about this game is the collectible aspect of it. The game feels way less enjoyable when you go for a 100% completion rate. To complete a stage at 100% you need to do 3 things.
- Finish the stage with your timer at 30. This turn any touch from an enemy near the end an automatic fail if you do not have the special +10, +20 items. This requirement is also active for boss levels.
- Collect all 20 red coins. Most of them are camouflaged as normal coins. Others you get from pounding pillars, carried by flying shy guys. Many of them can be made inaccessible if you go too far in the stage or miss a timed opportunity. Some are hidden in obscure location so you might be combing through a level only to reach the end of the stage with 18 of the 20 red coins. They really crank up the OCD factor.
- Collect all 5 flowers. They are fine by themselves, but maybe 3 instead of 5 would be better.
Getting 100% on all stages in a world unlocks bonus stages. But to add insult to injury, while the initial ones are pretty interesting and challenging, most of them are somewhat lack luster.
Despite all this I still consider this game to be a 9.5/10 overall.
The game would be too easy without 100% collection. It's the thing that makes it stand up to replayability. Many levels are silly if you just have to reach the ring.
I feel like im the only one who hates this game
Nothing!...
You meant to say everything
What don't you understand in "nothing!" ??? This game is a crap overhyped!@@zachatck64
This game sucks and is a bastard child successor to one of the greatest games of all time.
the Mario mechanic sucked and spoiled an otherwise (almost) perfect game. And the eggs mechanic was kinda iffy as well.
Great video! It's great to see you're still producing videos too. Sometimes you find a channel with awesome content and it's already dead
