I'm getting ready for a 100 miler next month, great tips that I havent seen in other lists/videos that sound like huge benefits (chapstick, big variety of clothing, waist lamp) - thank you!!
I'm doing my first 100k (and first ultra) this weekend at Bandera. I noticed that you didn't mention electrolytes at all -- I assume you were taking them constantly and just didn't talk about them?
I use the Amazfit Stratos watch for GPS and heart rate. Does 35 hours continuous GPS and heart rate at a 1s refresh. Also it is a transflective display so it looks better under daylight. not as impressive indoors as an apple watch but much more functional for fitness. Also has barometric sensor for altitude data. Brilliant watch for trail running and lasts 4-5 days under normal conditions
A lot of people also overlook one thing. I tell you after running 75miles or even a 100k, your mouth will endure so much food and crap. I always carry a toothbrush and toothpaste, because there is nothing better than dry socks and a clean mouth. Yes to baby wipes and bean burritos. But after mile 45, your teeth will thank you! #futuredentist
Lots of good information. My Garmin doesn't last through a marathon for me. I use my phone that has an extended battery along with the Nike Run Club app. Body glide has always been good enough for me. This winter I've learned it's always good to have a pair of gloves and a hat in my bag. That's a cool belt. Enjoy your taper.
I use a garmin fenix 5x plus. Im in love with this watch. Ive had it 11 months now. Really helps me with my training and has the built in heart rate And a ton of features my new favorite is being able to skip songs and turn up the volume from my watch and being able to pay for things from my watch as well is icing on the cake plus it does vo2 and a million other features.
I’d honestly suggest two Garmin 235’s. Maybe three. And by goodness thank you for including the Bob’s Big Boy. The video just wouldn’t be complete otherwise.
Chris - great job o the 100K! Love the new 'studio' look - I assume its still in your garage next to the weight bench? :) Its funny that only an ultra runner could understand the 'gesticulation' of applying a lube with a 'glove'.
Greetings from Washington, D.C. I'm a new subscriber. This was a wonderful video. I appreciate your advice. I have done 19 marathons and want to do an ultra. I use Gatorade gel cubes and water. I run in HOKA BONDI. I just use petroleum jelly for lube (😒sounds weird)! 😊👍🏽🏃🏾♂️
Great video Chris.... valuable info for sure. What Saucony shoes do you prefer these days? Have ya given up on the Hokas? I have the ATR and just can’t find my groove with them. The forefoot is too stiff for me. Have ya ever used Cliff shots?👎🏾👍🏽
Cjaye, ive 100km next week. I will be bringing 3 pairs of shoes in case of bad rain. Can you tell me why changing shoes felt so good?? I undertand why changing socks would feel good, but why the shoes ?? Thanks.
Congratulations! for your video very good useful info , I was walking mixed by slow jogging 80 km per day for 60 days(Athens 15th international ultra marathon festival 2020 in age 64) I did 4750 kilometers! In total time 60 days, What do u think? Is that good?.😊😊
A couple of notes for ya: First, body glide? You’re in SNB territory now mate. Jump on the Squirrel’s nut butter chain. Good stuff. As far as watches go, if you do decide to go for a cheaper watch, check out some of Epson’s watches. They make some very runt of the mill GPS watches that are totally adequate when it comes to time/pace/distance/elevation, but have a 30 hour battery life. For me, I don’t really care about steps, HR, sleep, and all that extra stuff, I just need the basic run data, and for that Epson does a pretty good job. Durable too!
Know your caloric needs for your 100! My weight and expenditure is one gel (vfuel) every 45 minutes + a sip (or more) of H20 every 15 minutes. I buy a shoe 1/2 size bigger than my norm to keep in my drop bag to swap out (if needed). I always carry a pair of socks just in case--especially for water crossings. Keep a small roll (re-rolled) of duct tape in your pack. Sunscreen!! I got fried in my last race (even though I had it in my dropbag--just forgot it). Handheld light + headlamp is my favorite combination. Extra hat in your drop bag. If you have long distances between drop bags, carry a small tube of bodyglide. Empty a chapstick tube and restuff it with your chaffe gel of choice.
Hey there. Thank you very much for the video. As someone training for 75km plus events can you tell me if you are self supported and expected to carry all the gear with you or do the events allow you to stash items at various places. I can't imagine training to carry multiple pairs of shoes etc. Thanks again.
This run was a looped 1 mile run so you always had access to your gear, but I’ve done all types. In my experience most races either have aid stations, drop bags or are a loop so you come back by your stuff.
I did a 63km ultra in april, i didnt train right for it. My " longest" run before it was 17kms. Finished the 63km in 7hrs 55mins. Was painfull but got there. So, if i train well for 2 or 3 months, doing high weekly mileage, do you think i could hit 100km??
The top isn’t actually inside out…but I can see how it could look that way…haha. This was a 24 hour charity race for a children’s charity called 100 mile club. Kids try to run 100 miles over a period of a few months. This was a training run building to my 170 miler I did a few weeks later.
@@CjayeMedia sorry mate just a bit of a wind up. Thanks for the video, I’m looking at doing my first long run (20miles) in a few weeks and your tips will definitely help me 👍🏼.
Try some Bag Balm or Udder Butter; both work great! You can apply it in all those nooks and crannies, use it liberally and a real man would use his hand-who needs a glove! LOL!
Garmin, Polar, Suunto, any sports specific watch except apple watch would do, don't get me wrong, I have an apple watch and I love it but it's a daily commuter watch and I love it, I just won't use it for runs longer than 10k, let alone races.
Let me know which products you use for...
1. GPS Watch
2. Anti-chafing
for chaffing i use a glove and a tub of Vasaline
Body glide / Garmin
vaseline and Garmin fenix 5s
vaseline and Garmin fenix 5x plus
Squirrels Nut Butter... winner!
Great video mate! I'm currently documenting my journey from non-runner to worlds longest desert ultra so this is a big help!
Running my first ultra, a 50 miler, next week and just wanted to say this video was very helpful!
I'm getting ready for a 100 miler next month, great tips that I havent seen in other lists/videos that sound like huge benefits (chapstick, big variety of clothing, waist lamp) - thank you!!
How did it go?
Great job Chris. I appreciate this type of insight, especially over topics that most other people do not discuss. Thanks!!
Thank you for making this video. Really, thank you. 🙏 I appreciate it more than you know.
Great tips! Thank you so much, super helpful. Racing 100k in September but researching now.
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck with your training.
I had an apple watch but after getting a garmin fenix 5x I'd never go back

Super helpful. Thanks!
this is a wonderful insight into a long race. I loved this video. Amazing job on this achievement!!
Congrats on the 100k Chris! Thanks for the info!

Garmin 235 lasted about 12 hours before it died for my last ultra. I carried a small charging stick to recharge.
Really useful tips! Thank you!
Awesome info..congrats mate xxxx

It's true bro I do it when I go for my daily runs its puts freshness in the run
Awesome video, thank you
Thanks bro running my first ultra in a week
Awesome job Chris and another great video. Loved the recap. For you next race I think electrolytes will be your best friend.

I needed this - 1st 100k in June Great vid
How’d it go?
@@0929mason it went great- pain free.
So helpful!
Very helpful, thanks. You forgot wearing your cap backwards. Standard for ultra runners 😝
Hahaha. Yes!
Thank you!
Amazing list thanks 💪
I use the Suunto 9 Baro, works perfect voor long runs. Long battery live, good accuracy and nice screen.
Thanks for the info! Great job on the 100km!
Also, A great watch for tracking workouts/races is the Fitbit HR . Battery life is phenomenal 🤙🏽

Great ideas thank you. X
Great content! Prepping for my first 100k August 8th
Suunto Ambit 3 Peak (125hrs battery life on GPS mode) and Petroleum Jelly for anti-chaffing (very effective)
I’d honestly suggest two Garmin 235’s. Maybe three. And by goodness thank you for including the Bob’s Big Boy. The video just wouldn’t be complete otherwise.

Thanks Mark! Yes are right...the studio setup is on the side on the gym in the back of the garage.
My apple watch (series 4) lasted about 12 hours. I used running app and played music on spotify during those 12 hours.
I have the Garmin 935 which is great. It is so so much better than a Apple watch for running

Good review!!I‘ve got an old and basic garmin model and I use petroleum jelly for all parts susceptible to chafing.
Keep on running!!!
Get a Garmin, easy, good app, syncs to Strava.
How long did the 100km race take? Not 24hrs?!
You have to try Pur Activ for anti chaf. It’s hands down the best!

Headed to check it out now!

Garmin is the best one 🔥🔥
Fenix 5s lasts ~14h with gps and pulse sensor on the wrist. I just take a 1000mAh powerbank (85g with cable) with me and charge it (4 charges)
I use Bluetooth headphones x2, runkeeper app, huawei phone, any phone is fine plugged into a 5x times extra battery
Cjaye, ive 100km next week. I will be bringing 3 pairs of shoes in case of bad rain. Can you tell me why changing shoes felt so good?? I undertand why changing socks would feel good, but why the shoes ?? Thanks.
I think it’s really mental because they are cooler, dry, and if they are a different model they feel a little different.
@@CjayeMedia thank you. Do you remember roughly how many litres of water you drank for the whole 100k??

Roughly, for a 100km run on flat road, how many litres of water for the whole 100k

You rock Karen! Thank you so much for the tips!
Bodyglide? I use pure coconut oil just for many things (but it does turn liquid in warm weather).
What size backpack is everyone using?
Where you applying glide?
"don't know if you really want to use a stick over and over again..."
*bahahaha that's hilarious mental picture*

What dual layer socks do you suggest? I just did my first 50k this weekend and found a sock change felt amazing. Just wanted to know your thoughts.
Congratulations! I like Wrightsocks.
Congratulations. For chafing I use just a jar with medical vaseline. Whats up with the Ginger runner style background?
What running shorts do you reccomend?

you mean "lubrication" right?
No…I think I mean lubercation 🤣
100k but it said 100 mile club on the frame? Also, I think your top is inside out, sorry to be nitpicking 😂

62 miles
use Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
You can charge a Suunto while exercising so yeah..., and i dont use anti-chafing.
My apple watch made it 10 hours with 60% battery left
Nice. My was the 2nd generation. Maybe the newer ones are better.
You're going on a camping trip, not a run😂😂
'put a glove on?' it's your own junk dude?
I think it has more to do with not wanting your hand all slimy and covered in the lubricant
garmin
Apple is a fail in general
