  • Hey guys, this is a DIY video, on how to change the oil on a 2012 BMW 116i, which is fitted with the N13 engine. I am not sure if this also works with the adapted N18 lump.
    To find the part numbers for my car, I use the website WWW.REALOEM.COM
    To find out technical informations such as torque settings, I use a website called www.newtis.info/ its worth a look. I love it :)

      @@mattsbeamer cool ta! I do wanna ask/ share something with fellow 116i drivers.... Mine has 11000 km but its not the most quiet or smoothest running engine hey? If I didnt know any better, Id say it sounds like a 3.0 diesel... Do you guys agree or have the same opinion? Cheers you all! Keep up the great vids btw Matt.... Love 'em!

      griffonsa same, and there’s a rattle on cold start. Has to do with the wastegate actuator arm. It has to much play so that it rattles during cold starts and is more noisy in general. Don’t worry about it. If the car runs smoothly and had no issues while driving, you don’t have to worry

      mattsbeamer i've bought the N20's spark plugs. They have the exact same dimensions and gaps, etc. The difference is that they are 1 step colder than the N13's. Since i am planning to do a remap stage 1 (or , perhaps, stage 2) i thought colder plugs would be a nice idea.
      When i install them i will give you a feedback if they are better than the originals or not

    Your videos are amazing, they helped me through knowing my first bmw, exactly the same with a slightly different N47 engine. thanks Matt.
    My question to you is if you are planning on making a short summary video of your knowledge about the timing chain problem, and if there is a way to know if it might fail as it seems very expensive to replace and now I fear I will have to get mine replaced, they said it is making a noise, which could cost >£1000 to replace and >£4000 if it fails. This has me worried and am now even considering selling the car.
    Thanks Matt, any thoughts?

      fady492001 hey, thank you so much for this wonderful comment. It means so much to me if I get a positive comment.
      Ohh the N47 timing chain issue :( I will look into this issue and work things out. It would be an interesting video to make too. It may be worth reading up on this thread in the meantime :) www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62400
      I hope it’s something else that is causing this noise. What year and model is your n47 f20 :)

    Hi Matt! And greetings from Finland.
    I used shell helix 5w 30 at the beginning but after schmiedmann (shop here in Finland that claims to be specialist in BMW) suggested to change over 0w 30, I switched to that, (castrol edge fst ti 0w30 c3). It had something to do with cylinder wall (if its right word) wear during cold start with this specific engine. After that, oil consumption dropped like 50%!! Mine has 152k/km on it and I get them changed + oil and air filter every 10k. Your videos has been huge help in operations ive done myself.
    Im not sure from the video but is the drain plug at the rear or front end of oil pan? I'm planning to start changing oil myself on ramps and car would be tilted rear down so would be better if its on rear end if i saw right. Thats why im asking, thanks in advance :)

    • @mattsbeamer
      @mattsbeamer  10 місяців тому

      Thanks for your kind message. :) I’m glad my videos are useful. :)
      I may have to use a 5w40 oil temporary, as it’s difficult for me to get my old oil at the moment. Plus it costs about £150 for the oil alone. I change my oil over 7000k km.
      I will double check the sump plug location. I never paid much attention before, as I was down in the pit. I will need to use my Jack this time.
      Good luck :)

    • @villesalmi899
      @villesalmi899 10 місяців тому

      Oh damn, oil is very expensive there 😬 but still cheaper to replace than worn out parts 👍
      Thanks that would be nice. I'll see it myself, not this but next weekend tho and change them no matter wheres the plug at. But if you happen to be in the pit let me know. Be it on either side its better to change myself from now on. Last time shop experiences made me -completely- lose trust in them.

    Hi matts
    It's Mahdi here from Australia
    I drive a 118i 2013 f20 1 series .
    The water expansion tank cracked right where is the screw air bleeding is .So ,I never rich my car,always goes to the work shop .But this time I felt to challenge my self and I replaced the water expansion tank my self .Right,I have 2 question !!
    1_ Do I need to drain the old coolant ?
    2_ Does the hoses need to be replaced at the same time as the water expansion tank been replaced ?
    Best Regards
    Mahdi

    • @mattsbeamer
      @mattsbeamer  4 роки тому

      Sorry about the delay.
      If it was my car, and the coolant hasn't been changed for a while, then id change it over, it will save you time later.
      It depends on the condition of the pipes. For peace of mind, id swap them if it was mine. :)

    Отличная инструкция! У Вас очень хороший английский, мне было интересно смотреть и слушать. У меня точно такая же головка на 36мм для съема масляного фильтра. Если углубиться в форумы, то Кастрол не особо то и хвалят для наших моторов. Как часто Вы меняете масло ?

      @mattsbeamer  5 років тому

      эй, спасибо за ваше сообщение :) Это означает, что нужно услышать отзывы. Я обычно меняю масло между 5000-7500 милями или на ежегодной основе. Я не очень сильно езжу на своем f20, поэтому его обычно делают раз в год. мой автомобиль проделал настоящие 38000 километров. Спасибо за предупреждение об этом масле. какое масло вы рекомендуете? какой форум является хорошим форумом для участия в России :) спасибо.
