Fun fact: This song was written as an apology from Bono to his wife after he forgot her birthday. Since it was a gift to her, she controls the royalties from the song, and she decided that all the royalties go to the Children of Chernobyl fund, still to this day. 😊

I actually thought it was, during the tours where he was "The fly" and "Mephisto" he got a little too into becoming the characters and was acting "bad" on tour, if ya know what I mean. I would prefer to accept the birthday story over tour antics, but only they know the truth. Still a great song and video!

This song means the world to me. I was 2 years old when I would run into the room in my stroller and throw myself at my dad and we would dance to this and since then this has been our song. Even now at 19 years old I will play this song and we dance around the living room and I realise how much of an amazing dad I have who will always be there for me. This will always be our song and we have already booked it as an official dance at my wedding whenever that day comes. He means the absolute world to me and I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for my incredible parents. Thank you so much both of you and I love you millions!!!!!

I cannot help but feel deep joy when I hear that song and watch that video. As stated below, the song was a throwaway from the Joshua Tree album sessions (the band simply had so many songs that something had to give!). If I recall correctly, Bono wrote that because he had missed/forgotten Ali Hewson's birthday and wanted to publicly express his regret in song. Lovely and touching stuff!

It's kind of incredible that this was a castaway from Joshua Tree which obviously had an absurd amount of hits, but any band of that time would kill for a song like this and this couldn't even make their album. It's kind of a miracle they realized how good this really was and re-released it later like they did.

I'm listening to U2 The Sweetest Thing near the end of September 2021
I first heard this song on a sad night in a house I lived in with my best friend, my father. We were at a bad spot in life, a spot where no one person should be. Without going into specifics about why we were so fucked in life, I was lucid and trying to go to sleep. This song came on the radio, one of our only possessions at the time, and it made me smile. It was in the few short minutes it played that I felt better and was able to sleep thinking about the melody and lyrics. My father died a few years later from a gunshot by local police officers. He was a gentle and great father. I went astray in my comment because I thought of that place and that night.

U2 is such a magnificent band, even though I am not a fan by any definition, but some songs of them just live rent free in my head.

It’s ok. Like I said I met my true love and in very happy. Back then losing the girl felt like the end of the world. The Sweetest Thing 🎵 when it comes on it’s a beautiful song. You never forget first loves. But I have the most wonderful wife and everything happens for a reason.

@@7beers That’s where my heartbreak started. I left to go back East for awhile my aunt was dying. My roommate forwarded mail to me and I received an invitation. I opened it and it was my girl. She was marrying a doctor. I was devastated and surprised. Didn’t know who this guy was. The wedding date was the following day!!!!
No chance to stop it. Not ashamed to admit I cried a lot. All I could do, over the phone I dictated a heart felt letter to my girl. My best friend wrote it all down, crashed the wedding and gave it to her at the reception.
Not my best moment. It wasn’t a mean note. It was filled with words of disappointment and of love unfulfilled.
But I regret sending it. Arriving as it did maybe was hurtful. I was just desperate as I was losing her forever.
