MY STORY:
I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen.
Jude I’m an old woman and I live on a rural small acreage with my husband. This morning I said to myself I can’t imagine not being here, I’m so grateful beautiful nature anda peaceful environment. Heal your soul. Walk barefoot. Be yourself

Jude and Sally, hello, I'm 68 born and raised in California lived in a house that was left to me by my parents, it was fully paid for. I spent my entire saving remodeling the house to be as I wanted it to be and loved it so much. Then the pandemic hit, I was laid off after 10 years at a job I loved and about 6 weeks later called back to work, doing a job I hated. So, I decided to sell my beloved house and move to where my only grandchildren are. Huge mistake that I won't go into, but honestly, I long for the life you and your reader Sally have! simple, quiet, just a lovely life to be who you are. I am excited to see you grow and make a beautiful life. On to your next video. With warmest regards to you and Sally.

I never get tired of hearing cows, sheep, foxes, owls and garden birds.
Same! We get herds of deer here regularly which we love!

Jude, my spouse and I moved from the city to a rural acreage at the age of 31. We knew a whole bunch of nothing. Now, 34 years later, we have kept everything alive (including ourselves) and created a space that has become a sanctuary for us. You will find your way, even though there are days where you aren’t sure. Just keep going. Whatever it is, going through it gets you to the other side. My 89 yr old mom has always said, “this too shall pass.” I used to hate that phrase, but have found it to be pretty true to life. Looks like you already have a good size community here to support you. ❤

We had a similar realization this past year and ended up leaving everything behind in California and moving to Scotland. Life is so much better, and we’ve also started to fall in love with life all over again. So glad you made this positive change ❤️

You and I are the same age Jude, and I couldn’t imagine having to go through losing both parents at this age. I think it’s easy to say that we are all so proud of you and especially the fact that you knew something had to change and taking that step. So excited to see what you end up doing with your new cottage!

I did that! Except with 4 kids in tow, desperate to get away from an abusive marriage and all the negative entourage that came with that. I had no idea about rural Australian living, it's the same as city living, but quieter, right? Yeah, nah. My dad had not long passed away from cancer, he was my 'hey dad, the tap is leaking' guy, he could fix and build anything, and he was no longer earthside. It was hard, real hard having to fix a broken down house like yours without the skills, but they came, me & the kids learnt. Best & most empowering time of my life in the end. Learned a lot of life lessons, such as making sure that the car is in top shape, nothing like being faced with a 38km walk after the car broke down with a 5 yr old, carrying groceries. Luckily after 1 hour of walking, a local finally drove by and gave us a lift, lol. I subscribed to your Stranded Dyeworks podcast, glad to know what your doing with your life and looking forward to this one
I often find the hardships bring out my strength of character and turn out to be the most humbling and powerful moments of my life. I also have four kids but live in rural Scottish Highland's! xx

I’m from the US and recently visited Scotland and it was the most wonderful place I have ever been. From the gracious locals to the scenery, I was blown away. While I live in the countryside here, I still envy and equally love that you made this move!

You need to have a little camping stove for when the electricity goes off so at least you can have a hot drink but be aware that they have to be used in a well ventilated area. The setting is absolutely beautiful. Definitely get a dog they are such good company. I hope you’ll be very happy in your new home and look forward to seeing your progress
Yes!! The stove top is currently propane fuelled - but if I replace it with an electric cooker and oven, I’ll definitely get an emergency camping stove!
A dog is very high on my priority list! I’ve got a trip planned in a few weeks for a friends wedding, but after that, it’s Dog o’clock for sure!!
Here in rural Ireland I have a gas hob and electric oven. Brilliant when the winter storms comes and the power is off for days. Just came across your site and am immediately drawn to your adventure. Looking forward to getting to know you!🎉

I second this Jude!!! I first saw your 3rd episode cottage tour, and a lot of those “updates” look dodgy, and if they do, you can probably rightly assume the electrics are dodgy too. Be safe. You don’t want your dreams going up in smoke - literally!
Oh my goodness me, Jude! I am SO glad that you have picked up the camera again! Only a couple of days ago, I was thinking about you and I told myself “I’m sure he has found his cottage in the middle of nowhere now…” This place seems to have great bones and if you can sit outside with a twinkle in your eyes and let your legendary giggle fill it after the first day there, then it says it all! Looking forward to watching you fall in love with life again!❤ I am turning 30 in 2 months I am alone with my mother without friends or family. My mum is dying of Altsheimers and I am severely disabled and chronically ill which has made me mostly bedbound since I turned 17. I haven't been able to leave my tiny flat since then except for long periods in hospital for surgery. So I feel with you. I have to take care of all of my mother's paperwork now too and try to work out the muddle and debts she has accumulated while hiding that she wasn't capable of dealing with anything like paying bills for the past years. I hope I'll be able to live a bit through your videos and share your adventures in the countryside. You are now living my dream. I hope it makes you very happy❤

Trick for sleeping on an air mattress: put blanket(s) under the mattress and another on top of the mattress, then a sheet /whatever bedding you are using on top of that.
slept on air mattress through winter this year card board under and a flannel sheet sleeping bag and helped a bit but so glad when bed arrived 3 mths later
Get a heated mattress pad! All the difference in the world! Unless you don’t have electricity! 😮
I wish I'd known that when i moved - i felt I was clinging to a slippery waffle
Make that a wool blanket, always, between you and mattress
I came to say something similar - layers under and over the air mattress will help you stay much warmer!

Jude, I did something similar to you when I was 62 although not on such a large scale. Sold my townhouse in a busy suburban area near Brisbane, Australia and bought a small house on 1,500m2 with two huge storage sheds in Central North Tasmania in Australia. Left my Mum who's nearly 97 now and my son behind. It was a weather change for me. I've had to learn about tank water, climbing a ladder to clean the sieves on top of the tank, back to mowing the grass, growing fruit and veges, making relishes and jams, bottling tomatoes plus the rest of it. I've found my tribe of crafty retired women who spin, knit and sew as I do. I visit Brisbane every year during their winter. It's not where I thought I'd be. I'm now 66 and still living the dream in Paradise. I have water views too where the Tamar River meets Bass Strait. I'm so looking forward to following your adventures. Stay safe and strong 😊

I'm American. We visited your country about 8 years ago and just loved it. At our age we won't be moving (and we want to stay close to our grown children here in the U.S.), but given our fear of the U.S. ending up like Hungary, we've talked about how Scotland is a place we'd like to live.
Literally living my dream life hon. Im actually from Aberdeenshire and know how lucky you are to have found that little piece of heaven. Glad you are doing good things with it hon. Remember Winter starts in September so get stocked up and insulated. Double curtains for the windows and doors. Draft excluding saves lives lol! Get your oil tank serviced and filled before you do anything. Then get your stove and chimney done. Essentials!

So sad to hear of your double loss. We moved to a rural spot 30 years ago from London and haven't regretted it for a day. We saw an old wreck of a barn and bought it as a completed building from the builder so we saw it every day from when the sheep moved out until the day we moved in. The countryside noises, sights and peace soothe the soul and I've found having my garden and growing my own fruit and veg very therapeutic. Good luck with your life and new project. Do get the electrics looked at. Winter will be here before you know it and you don't want to freeze 😮. I'll be watching your progress and wishing you well 😊

All the things you were hemmed in with in your previous house that you wanted to expand on and delve into and couldn't, you now have that opportunity laid out before you! Your new property from what I've seen in this video looks idyllic... yes, lots of work to make it truly yours, but how satisfying that will be.... nth degree satisfying. Jude you have been through so much. My parents died twelve weeks apart and it took a few years to surface and start functioning again there were two of us navigating all the paperwork and legal requirements which took ages . My recovery included a house move ( albeit a new build) and getting a cat. I wish you all the best and hope you can take time to enjoy the journey and all the achievements along the way
Ohh I’m sorry - that’s so hard! Death admin feels like it’s neverending! Very good idea on getting a cat - I’m planning on getting a dog, a cat and some chickens eventually!
OH MY GAWD JUDE that is GORGEOUS!! That VIEW is INSANE!! I think you're going to need a riding lawn mower or some sheep!
Quick hack, if you can find a camping store (or the dreaded Amazon) you can get a "shower bag" and lay it out in the sun, so you'll have hot water (on sunny days) at the end of the day. Also boiling a pot on the stove and then cutting it with cool water usually nets enough for a bath....I too absolutely hate air mattresses for always being cold. I hope that dog is right around the corner!

Well done Jude! That property is gorgeous! I don't know what your internet situation is, but I know I would be heavily reliant on UA-cam how-to videos. We recently replaced the bottom panel on our oven, and we have also changed the transmission on our washer, changed out the heating element on the dryer, fixed shower faucets and lamps. Just to name a few projects and we owe it all to UA-cam University. I would definitely Google the UV water filter issue - anything with an alarm gets dealt with first. Good Luck! You can do it!
UA-cam university is amazing!! Luckily the internet here is great (someone with very deep pockets paid for there to be fibre optic cables run out to his house a few miles away, so the infrastructure was here for everyone else) - after some consulting with the water system company, I’ve got a new alarm panel to replace the faulty one - that’s a job for tomorrow 🙈🤞

If you’re still cold at night, here’s a Canadian winter camping trick: wear a touque (wool hat? Beanie? Bobble hat?) to bed to help keep you warm and put a blanket (wool or fleece) between your bottom fitted sheet and your blow up mattress. The sheet keeps the blanket from moving around in the night. Good luck Jude!
1st off I got so excited to see this, I even felt a mom moment creep in. 2nd put a large terry towel between the air mattress and your blankets and it will help you get and stay warm. I buy bath blankets and use them instead of regular blankets when I get a bone chill. So happy to hear your wonderful voice again. Can't wait to see where this adventure takes you.🫂
