- Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Okinawa and the Amami Islands are treasured natural wonders renowned for their endemic terrestrial and aquatic naturescapes and rich regional cultures. Thanks to these preserved blessings, Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, Iriomote, and Okinawa’s Yanbaru area were collectively recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (world-natural-...) in July 2021.
Okinawa’s Yanbaru area, the northern part of the island, is home to one of the largest evergreen forests in Japan. Here, you can hike, river trek, canoe, and even zipline through stunning island-specific flora and fauna. On Iriomote, you can continue your nature adventure by swimming with sea turtles and exploring Japan’s largest mangrove forest.
Aside from its biodiversity, the islands are also home to rich cultural traditions. On Tokunoshima, experience salt making practices from the Edo period, and on Amami-Oshima, listen to enchanting island songs that have been passed down for generations.
Discover the vibrant nature and cultures of these treasured islands!
