  • This video was such a joy to put together. How it's already been 3.5 years here I'm not too sure. But the adventures, the ocean, the food & the people have made us fall in the love with this tropical island. I'm not sure how you couldn't to be honest. If we could stay in Okinawa forever, we probably would. Enjoy ✨

I cannot thank you enough for this video. My mother is from Okinawa. I have not seen her since I was 1. After decades of searching I found my sister and next year we are going, to visit my mother’s burial temple and see where she grew up. I was in tears throughout this video as you so beautifully and respectfully represented the island and people and all of their beauty.

@@pipesteph112hope you don’t mind me answering this question. I lived on Okinawa for 8 years. I travel to Japan for 3 months 2x a year and always stay in Okinawa for part of my visit. Think of Okinawa’s weather like southern Georgia or Northern Florida. Typhoon season(hurricane) goes from June to November. It’s humid and these months are best for snorkeling and water sports. I personally love December through April in Okinawa. Jan/Feb are the cooler months but you find yourself in a hoodie and shorts most days. Low humidity and plenty of sunny days to be had.

Hello from Atascadero, California. THANK YOU for your welcome video! I too lived in Okinawa for four years from 1958 to 1962 when I was in beginning elementary school. Wow! Kadena! My family attended a USAF Thunderbirds show there. My father was in the USAF, assigned to Naha Air Force Base. We all fell in love with that island, with me becoming very fluent in speaking Okinawan, as we lived off-base the first year and I only had Okinawan friends. One of our most favorite places to visit was Okuma, as well as Ishikawa Beach. When we returned to the U.S. in 1962, for years afterwards I would ask Mom and Dad when were we going to move back home (to Okinawa). I had my first girl friend while there, so that was a BIG DEAL for me, which hit me hard when we had to return to the U.S. Once back in the U.S. we were based at McChord AFB in Tacoma, Washington, then moved to a 4,000 high mountain top on the coast of Oregon, Mt. Hebo, where my father was base commander of Mt. Hebo Radar Station for several years. From there, we moved to Waldport, Oregon, on the Coast, for Dad's retirement, but, unexpectedly, he was extended on assignment to Ankara, Turkey, for about 18 months, during which Mom and I joined him for a year in 1969, but had to leave on an urgent basis due to unrest against Americans. Then back to Oregon for good, where I attended college, then spent about 10 years on nuclear power plant construction in Pennsylvania, then returned to California where I spent the next 35 years working at an operating nuclear power station. I recently retired. Again, many thanks for your great video! 😃

thank you for the kind message! sounds like you have an amazing collection of memories there, something I'm surely collecting while living here too. We love Okuma as well and are going in two weeks :) Currently learning Japanese, I wish I could be fluent by the time we leave but it's hard! did you ever keep up with the language? & congrats on your recent retirement, I was born and raised in California & that's a pretty great spot to be too!

11 years ago, I missed out on what I believe would have been a life changing experience. I got offered by a kind american couple to come as their Au pair in Okinawa to take care of their daughter. They were covering all the fees, would help me get Japanese lessons, my driving licence and even offer me a way back home once or twice a year for a few holidays. Salary was good too. It really was perfect. Everything was going well, until I had to give an answer. I chickened out. I got scared and said I couldn't do it, saying I wanted to stay close to my family ─ truth to be told, it never was the reason, I literally just got scared.
It's probably my biggest regret in life, because they made me discover Okinawa and to this day, I still dream about going there. One day for sure!

Okinawa is where my grandparents lived post-war (grandfather was a US Navy officer). When they returned to the States, they had all of their furniture in their Japanese home shipped to their new location in the Bay Area. Visits to their home while growing up sparked a natural curiosity: what was this awesome culture that produced such fascinating art, furniture, textiles, etc? Many decades later, that spark is now a bonfire, and although there are many, many places in Japan that will vie for my attention (and money!) when I finally reach her shores, Okinawa remains a top priority because of this familial connection.
Thanks so much for sharing a bit of it with me! 🍻🙇‍♂️🙂

You were lucky to live on Okinawa before they changed city names and built so much. I lived there from 67-73 and went to Kadena Elementary School. We spent a lot of time in Sunabe,at my grandparent’s house just a block or so off the beach. Now, it’s a quarter mile or so from the beach because of the landfill they did to add housing. It was very local back then, but now it’s very touristy.
My wife and I have been going back to visit my family every other year for about 10 years and are sponsoring my cousin’s daughter so she can go to college in California. We alternate vacations between Okinawa and Maui. Believe it or not, she loves Maui but, absolutely loves Okinawa a bit more because of all of my wonderful family out there.
Hope you have a chance to get back, it’s a great island.

P.S. 3: Do people still catch Semi's from the sides of trees? We would catch them all time and place them in Semi cages for a short time before letting them go. We would use long bamboo sticks split on one end and wrapped in spider webbing to catch the bugs. Strange things you remember.

I was in the Marines at Camp Foster from about May of 1990 to November of 1991. We went to Kadena Air Base and ate lunch in their chow hall once and compared to our facilities, it was like a fine dining experience! LOL! I still remember the Okinawan ladies coming over to get our trays and we were like no we've got them, we'll put them away and they were like no, we'll get them for you! We couldn't believe it. I started to question my choice of branches that day! 😁

You need to get out and see the other islands, for one Ishigaki. There you can skip the paddle board and ride a real Sabani. Or you can visit Taketomijima and ride an Okinawan limousine. On the main island there are also other things to see too. Some are touristy places.
