Sailing off Shore: Weather Reading (No Tech) | Sailing Wisdom [S4 Ep20]

- Herby gives a lesson on how we get our weather information while out at sea. He does this with no computer, no internet connection, and most of all, no gizmo that you have to buy! He gets our weather information from his "Weather Eye".
Herby tells you how to look at the clouds to see what winds you will be granted based on the shape and formation of the clouds. Clouds are just water vapor floating around in the atmosphere, and the clouds movement will tell you what is going on in the atmosphere (more importantly for you, what is going to happen at the surface) and what winds will be coming your way!
This is all important information when you are sailing because the wind is your fuel. Too much or too little are bad things for a passage-making sailboat. Having the right amount of wind in the right direction is crucial in getting you to your destination in a timely manner. Sure, you could use something like PredictWind with an Iridium connection, but that is expensive and not always accurate. Looking at the sky to read the clouds is free and very accurate because it is the weather that you will be experiencing locally.
Herby and Maddie are making their way offshore around the Iberian Peninsula. They left out of Northern Portugal and are heading to the Algarve on the South coast of Portugal.

Welcome back. A married couple often talk about the least of things.
I like the way that boat looks like a house, with blankets, pillows, hats and so on hanging around. Not marine grade everything, just home stuff.
Marcos Costa it sure makes it cozy! Maddie has done a great job of making Wisdom a home :)
I woke up to the sun shining today for the first time in a while also!! It makes you feel better anyway!! You both looked good!!
On Tilt Sailing Dale Hudson thanks!
It’s sure nice to be outside with good weather
Hanked on sail changes: Yeah, easy, on a pitching, rolling deck with water breaking over you. Loads of fun. Been there.
Being a cutter, we just drop the headsail and keep the staysail. No one has to go to the stem and deal with hanks. We also prepare well before anything arrives so we don’t get caught in those situations.
We had our experience with that and never want to repeat it!
@@RiggingDoctor are those webbed hanks on the down wind sails? If so, do you have a video showing how to make them?
I've just made that leg last weekend off the coast of Figueira da Foz on a 31ft and we saw dolphins too!
👍
Cant wait to watch. Safe travels back!
Hello guys!
@@RiggingDoctor hey look up Amazon Influencers and sign up!!!
Doing it right now ;)
I didn’t qualify, but I will try again at 20k subs
@@RiggingDoctor dang it... you are not that far off!!!
*_ But Maddie, Pizza is a GOOD thing to talk about! Keeps you Wise on Wisdom and I'm sure Sofia can hear all too. Fair winds!! _*
Pizza is always good to fix and enjoy. I bet your glad the Maddie is not into Irish step dancing, but prefers reading instead. I wonder if she ever thought of taking up the violin. Lots of time to practice while your cruising or becalmed.
Great to see you sailing, food looks deeelish! Steady on mateys...
Nice cooking. Nice, calm sailing too
Those really are my favorite kind of days :)
OK, Bill... Who is Bill... Bimini, Bermuda, Backsail... It appeared that only Monty was on duty. Maybe a sail specifically for beam reaches? ;-) You might show a cut of the current sail load when talking about changing sails.
Hi. I wonder could you, sometkme, make a video on, or explain, how you set up the synthetic lifelines - what rope was used, what type of end connectors/connections?
Thanks, Philip
Will do! I’ll make that soon ;)
You had me at "Pizza." It's my favorite food! Enjoyed the video. This one showed the more relaxing side of cruising and you both looked quite at home. Looking forward to the next one! 👍👍👍
Be careful of crab pots near where you are. Even that far offshore, I've seen them is water 450m deep and they would've been chains at the bottom, with very strong lines to the surface. Was caught on one, off Cascais, for 2 hours!
Ouch! Thankfully we didn’t see any (or we didn’t notice any). We did see a float with a line that broke free and was drifting out in the open ocean on our way to the Azores. They are some huge floats on them!! Chesapeake on steroids!!!
@@RiggingDoctor Could be Chesapeake but I haven't been to the U.S. to judge. I'm Australian
Very cool!
The Chesapeake is littered with crab pots. We avoided sailing at night because you can’t see them. I don’t know why, but the fishermen seem to like black colored floats. I can’t see them by day!!
):- Thank You.
How of an issue is the dynema in the cold weather when used for the rigging? are you tightening and loosening throughout the seasons.Jeff
I don’t adjust it. In the cold, we just keep the sails lower on the mast since it’s all a bit slack.
We have it tuned for 80F but it’s good down to 60F. If it’s in the 50sF we just don’t go full sail.
Are there distinguishing characteristics between a Drifter Sail and an Asymmetrical Sail ? Fabric weight, Size, how is goes up and down?
Size and fabric are the same. The cuts are a little different but both work best off the wind and a little just past the beam.
The big difference is that an asymmetric is not stayed where a drifter is. All the horror stories of the sail getting out of hand or going under the boat are negated since it is firmly attached to the headstay.
👍🏻🙂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
OK, what is your pizza dough recipe? Got to try it!
We have it in our recipe playlist :)
@@RiggingDoctor ha, can't find that. Anyway, you are leading me into the road to hell (bad habits)! we don't eat pizza - too many carbs, but seeing your vlog this morning at breakfast I thought I would make it for dinner! And here we are . . . .carb eating!

Almost like you read my last comment on another video, and put out the video of similar topic the same day :)
Hi Guys, I just watched Delos episode 253,and they said if you have STCW 95 you don’t need to worry about the shining( not sure how to spell it sorry) thing . May I suggest you watch it, it’s at the beginning of the video.
I saw it!! I’m looking into it ;)
Is your fore stay also dynema?
The forestay is Dyneema but the inner forestay is steel (but we are going to be changing it out very soon)
Oh by the way in Australia today the date is 02/02/2020
Are you watching the tennis??
Rigging Doctor , that would be a very big NO. Not into it. Only Sport I watch is sailing.
15:40 Is that a sculling oar lashed to the lifeline?
Oh wait. Never mind. A few moments later I saw the fenders tied to it. It looks like it is for tying up along pilings or when going through locks.
It’s a sculling oar 😁
I just tie the fenders to it when they are not in use.
@@RiggingDoctor I have been thinking about getting one or making one. Do you use it often? I think it would be particularly useful for a boat that does nothing but day sailing or weekend trips.
I read somewhere that a sculling oar can propel a boat up to sixty feet! I also found two articles on the Ro/Yuloh with is essentially a sculling oar with an angle in the handle. If you are interested in them let me know.
I wondered the same thing.
Another great video-much broader coverage than I expected. (But it was a mean trick to show that "garbage" pizza-AND enjoy it so much-on my fast-and-abstinence days!)
Maddie, for the most part I don't like books by women authors, but you hooked me and though I can't buy it, I found my local library has it in ebook format. (I'll start it in just a moment.)
floating around for a few day i would have been cleaning and organizing that boat it looks like it needs it
Thanks
How rude Dee! Some people like to live in a sterile showhouse the rest of us are human and like to surround ourselves with comfort and things that remind us of our humanity
@@darrenj3267 Nice. __ Thank you for that.
I was just reading "The Old Man and the C". It's a story of a man who struggles to get beyond the third letter of the alphabet.
Not sure if it's based on truth or not.
What is the new AIS?
Vesper XB8100 :)
@@RiggingDoctor Thanks! So the screen I saw was your tablet off the Vesper XB unit? I was wondering if you had the Watchmate.
WatchMate is the app and it displays the AIS on the tablet. It’s super helpful!
You should change the title of your page to “Sailing in Pajamas” until you get to a warm climate.
Haha! Good point!
:)
Cabin fever. One of the worst cases I’ve seen.
It gets intense for an extrovert
I learnt very little about the weather.
You need to watch the other weather episodes we have. Weather is a pretty complicated topic that can’t be summed up in one single episode, but we will be making more and more videos on the topic to bring an understanding of it to you 😎
WOW! We received a cloud lesson.. AIS lesson. Dolphin music, my name, was fantastic, again.! Beautiful sunset and you guys always talk about food! :) Pizza dough was the best I've seen you make. Maybe it's due to the new ingredient, salt water!🤣 Are you guys done with Vikings? This video had a little of everything! ❤ Now, Ok y'all, do I need to buy you a new FLAG? This one is pathetic. Look at all those Irish Pennants! If you were in the military I think you would be court martialed. Just kidding about the court martial.....but not about my flag! Pick up a few before you fly back to the boat.😕
We have them and are ready to replace it as soon as we get there :)
Thank GOD! I wasn't looking forward to a short round trip to put the flag on Wisdom myself. Lol! I would have been a stow away! Attached to a pier while tall are driving around! Lol. Very important, don't forget and read the proper way to destroy Ole Glory. Which I'm sure you have already! Must see video. Lol. Picking! 🤣🇺🇲
Not to appear snarky Herb, but if I run out of wind I furl my jib and fire up my diesel engine. Just sayin' Oh and by the by; Maddie we really would like for you to sing a little more. You have a really nice singing voice.
There are times when that would be nice 🤣
Was nice while it lasted. You are part of my first lot of unsubscriptions. I can stand you tube new obnoxious giant thumbnails and I am out.
Lol what??
