  • "The rigging is right, the sail is right, but they're not right together." -Éanna. A new jib of a different size caused all sorts of problems while at sea. With no time to install new harware, a decision is made to swap out this new sail for the older, larger version. We finish the task with help from a local, then stumble on a little piece of history and...East Germany?

    Hey Monique I loved the drawing of Paragon and your added parts of the sail. Think I might show that to my beginner Junior Sailors. We teach the kids parts of the boat, and parts of the sail by having them clip a wooden labeled clothes pin same as your diagram. Then turn it into a game and a little competition. The team most accurate with labeling wins! The Cape Cod Mercury are our beginner boats. ; )

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 років тому

      Wow Jessica, thanks so much. What a great way to teach the children different parts of a boat...it sounds as though you make the learning process a lot of fun as well. If you end up using the footage I'd love to hear how it went! Btw, the Mercury was the first boat that Drake learned to sail on and, subsequently, fell in love with sailing. He got a goofy grin on his face and started telling me stories of his fist days on the water. Good memories indeed! (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

      Ha yes I saw your video about Drake learning to sail on the Mercury and then taking out beginners himself. Good inside story on where to learn to sail in Boston. Its available to everyone! They are a great boat to learn on. You can't break them, so super sturdy. Accidents happen as you know. Will let you know if we use your drawing of parts of sail for a Chalk Talk. I often try to video the kids so we can use footage for our Sail Club's website. Housatonic Boat Club. Cheers!

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 років тому

      Oh yes, Community Boating in Boston is the best! I love the concept; how they believe that sailing should be for all and then make it affordable so that everyone CAN join. The high cost is definitely a barrier for many...I know it was for me in the beginning.
      We love living and cruising aboard Paragon, but she's definitely not a day sailor. Drake missed having a small boat to explore on which is a big part of why we have our little sailing dinghy, Wanda. She's tiny, but allows us to sail around the harbour for the day and we've had a lot of fun.
      Best of luck with the kids and if we're ever in Connecticut perhaps we'll stop by!
      Cheers ⚓-Monique

    Thank you so much for the outtake at the end of this video where you debated the sail terminology. I am glad to know I am not alone. We had a debate while measuring sails in the marina yard last summer among some of the most knowledgeable sailors I know. We could not agree which was the luff and leech. It turned out that the saying the "Luff don't luff" gets you most of the way there. But, then my wife found this mnemonic: "Mr LUFF had a TACK in his FOOT; he had no CLEW he had a LEECH on his HEAD".

    I really loved this video. It took me back a few years when I was folding sails in the wind in Cape Coral, SW, Florida. I blew around like in this video. I remember "hanking," the head sail on. On a 27 ft boat it didn't take as much strength to raise the sail. It looks that E`anna really had a big work out raising the sail.

    Great video as always. Thanks for going through the names of the parts of the sail, often hear it but never know what they talking about, thanks again. Definitely is a beautiful place and I couldn't agree more with the comment concerning people living onboard a boat. Hoping to make it my reality very soon... The thought of being able to live on the hook and go traveling whenever I want, even just a couple of hours up the coast, brilliant. Cheers for now guys... ;-}

    So I went on a work bender staying up an entire day and night. When I finally crashed into bed, I switched this video on and promptly conked out. When I did, I had quite the cinematic dream of sailing with this strange very fast mini-version of Paragon with my wife and a few friends. I ran it aground once :-/ Then suddenly I'm aboard this hovering helicopter that was literally a huge swank living place, like the interior of a private jet or a really nice yacht. I opened the side door and we're at least 10K feet, the blades are making ZERO noise as well, I thought that was odd. Since we were over the ocean I decided to pee out the side rather than use what was bound to be a very nice restroom. Then some alarm sounded and the helicopter was losing altitude quickly. My friends were around and I took couch cushions, made a fort and told everyone to get inside to brace for impact. Then the dream lapsed to me going aboard a full-blown Titanic replica... So thanks for the very elaborate interesting dream. I did actually watch the video after I woke back up! Liked it as always! Cheers!

    The traditional fishing dory was rowed standing up, facing the bow. That is why there are no thwarts on the dory pulled up on the hard. I sail plastic sloops in Southern California around Los Angeles and out to Catalina Island, but love boats overall, which I why I know how to row a cod-fishing dory. If you ever make it to the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, in southern California, ask for Russ the guy with the Cal 25, and we'll have a beer or three.

    I have been using the blue thread lock with good success on shackles and ss screws into aluminum etc no meat hooks ! One small bottle has lasted a long time .The fact that it seals out moisture is an added benefit in my opinion .The furling bolt would have been a perfect situation for it.

    Excellent vid as always. A quick thought.....iIf the existing track and cars aren't giving you the right sheeting angle for the new stay-sail have you considered using twings or floating leads? With some snatch blocks, a couple of rings or looper blocks and some extra line for tethers they can be quickly set up to provide a lot of versatility in sheeting angles until something more permanent can be installed. Fair Winds.

    The advantage of using purposed-made wire twisting pliers is the wire is evenly tensioned along it's length, abrasion of the wire is avoided, less chance to nick the wire, and better ability to inspect the twists and the secured part. Such pliers are very common in the aviation industry and can be had inexpensively (but do avoid the cheap knock-offs).
    Using common pliers, there is an uneven tension placed in the twists which may cause the wire to abrade, nick, or fracture. These defects introduced upon installation are likely hidden and difficult to inspect due to the twists piled upon one another.

      Hi Mark,
      We have a sail locker in the bow between the head and the anchor chain locker. In there we have two extra jibs, an extra staysail, an asymetrical spinnaker, and a mainsail for our sailing dinghy Wanda. Also in there we have a couple of folding bikes, some extra lines and fenders, and a really heavy storm anchor. We show a little peek at the sail locker right here :) ->

    A few days in Lunenburg and nobody gave you an introduction and history to the wooden dory's? (edit: the funny looking wooden row boats) Used on the great banks for fishing, they would be hoisted off the decks of schooners and picked up at some time later. Lots of history as they are still making them in Lunenburg 100 years later.

We pushed off from North Carolina in March of 2013, and sailed from the US to Canada, Greenland, and then to Iceland where we spent the winter producing our Season 1 episodes. Then we spent the next season sailing to Faroe, Scotland, and down the east coast of Ireland to the south coast where we spent the next winter producing our Season 2 episodes. After that we spent the next Spring and Summer sailing up the west coast of Ireland back to Scotland which is where we are now working on producing Season 3.
      During the Summer season we are always filming and voyaging and rarely have any time for video editing or finding places to upload videos to UA-cam. We currently have over 1000 hours of video footage that we have not started editing yet. Our focus for Seasons 1,2,3 and beyond has always been to spend as much time as we need to tell our story well, rather than to try to tell it in real time.
      We are not a vine that tells a 6 second story or a channel that goes around the world in 8 episodes. Instead, we aim to tell a sequential story that covers the real aspects of cruising and all that happens to us along the way. We aim to share, not just the pretty cocktail hours and day sails, but all the particulars of real life cruising...the breakdowns (both gear and people), the set backs, the triumphs, the places we visit, and the people we meet.
      We hope that you find the story worthy and interesting regardless of when it was filmed. We will continue this in-depth coverage as we explore far flung destinations and can't wait to share the local distillery in Canada (with house dog!), what happens when you run out of propane in Greenland, and the thought process of when the risk of pushing off becomes too risky.
      It's all in there and we can't wait to share the rest of this journey with you.

    I read somewhere that an ear plug in one ear only, will help some people overcome sea sickness.

      I've heard that as well but haven't had a change to try it as of yet. Perhaps in this next leg to the Faroe Islands this spring...I'll let everyone know how it works out! ⚓-Monique

    what kind of dinghy is yours?

      Hey james, we purchased Wanda, our dinghy, at a consignment store and aren't sure of her make and model. Our best guess is that she might be a homemade kit boat and kudos to the person that built her since she rows and sails like a dream.
      A similar dinghy, and one Drake previously owned, would be the Fatty Knees. It has a wonderful design and also rows and sails extremely well. In fact, that particular make was on Drake's wish list when we stumbled across Wanda.

      Thanks Bob! We needed a bit of a refresher and thought, if we were going to be talking about parts of the sail, it might be helpful for everyone else as well. As you can see by the cookie at the end, we forget terms as well. (✿◠‿◠) 🇨🇦-Monique

    What will be the plan after Ireland?

      Right now we're hunkered down in a protected harbour in the far north of Scotland to wait out the blustery Scottish winter. Our plan is for this to be our jumping off point in the Spring to sail back to the Faroe Islands and then on to Svalbard and Northern Norway. Until then we'll be working madly on editing Season 3. :)

      Oh, doesn't that sound lovely. In fact, we are on the Isle of Lewis in a bit of a gale at the moment. However, the wood stove is purring away and we're snug and toasty aboard Paragon. (✿◠‿◠) 🇨🇦-Monique

      Hi Noell,
      When we published this video, in the video description we wrote:
