Jon has to be one of the best interviewers I have seen. His comments and insights add to the discuss, rather than distracting or derailing the discussion.

Two of my favorites in one place. Daily Show, Parks and Rec, and Good Place are all top 10 TV shows ever for me.

With speaking of sadness as it relates to comedians, Jon Stewart is right. How do I know? I’ve been watching their performances since I was 13 and would stay up late on school nights to watch Johnny Carson for the stand-up comedians he had on his show. To make an entire auditorium laugh was the most wonderful thing. (Even if later I found out about canned laughter, it was still wonderful).

I haven't seen the show (yet) but the delight in creating a fun show about ethics and the afterlife mentioned in the conversation reminds so much of Dante's Divine Comedy which is (forget Dan Brown) a delightful read, full of humour, serenity and empathy.
This interview is delightful and illuminating but also FUCK I miss Jon and it was so good to hear him share his thoughts.
he has a show that is on Apple tv now but i think the show is pretty mediocre compared to his tenure on the daily show....

The Good Place is one of my favorite shows. And to think I only watched it because of Kirsten Bell. Turned into loving the show more than the actors, and they were all great. Ted Danson was amazing in that role.
Also, anyone know how to contact Michael Schur, have a great idea for a feel good show, not really comedy, but ethical and philosophical. Sounds right up his alley.

It was Arthur Andersen (comprised of the Tax & Audit divisions - this is where all the 💩 happened) and then Andersen Consulting (business consultants) … two separate (but related) organizations.

Regarding "Eventually you go back to being a bug" Read Joseph Campbell's description of "The humbling of Indra" Where the Indra (having taken hundreds of lifetimes to work up to that status is being a major pain to the workmen building and tearing down his infinite palace, is told that the endless stream of ants that swarm the room are "former indras all, and sells his stuff and becomes a Yogi.
In the 70's there was a "living bible" where they updated all the references for example "the jonah and the whale story became "Behold the great leviathan, for his belly is full of scales and he sallies forth like a steamroller." Likewise the Aristotle reference should be Jonah Hill or Seth Rogan who the kids think of as "wise old geezers".

I came for Mose but was shocked to see an intellectual who has deeper understanding of life and people that I'm even ready for, mostly due to the fact that I'm absolutely immature and hopelessly behind on things like that. Eff you, Michael Schur. How dare you revealing it to myself how shallow I actually am?

Using water during a drought and not getting vaccinated are selfish acts that cause harm to the community, but riding the bus without paying is predicated on necessity most of the time. It would only be a valid moral question if everyone's ability to pay and need to travel were equal. The bus should be free for those for whom paying is a hardship. I have seen cops pull a mom with small children off the bus, as well as old people and other unfortunates, and it was obscene. The ethical thing to do would clearly have been to let them ride in peace.
Very true. But I think he had to use that example since most of the philosophical experiments/questions he mentioned were about the trolley problem.
I think he was referring to an action that doesn't cost anything if only very few do it (and the people doing it know it) and would destroy a system/principle if more people were to do it. For example, in a poor corrupted country most poor people take the bus. The rich travel in luxury vehicles, helicopters and private jets. If half the people didn't pay their share because they thought they should get to ride for free then either the bus route will be canceled or the bus fair will double in price harming those who always paid even though they were also poor.
The solution is not freeloading but demanding better policies ie a fine should be analogous to your income, as should taxes.
You could still argue that it 'causes harm to the community' or more specifically the local income from fares.
@@Tao_Tology To whome would suffering be instilled? A number on a page failing to rise by 50 cents isnt actually immoral unless it caused the bus system to shutdown or something
@@Justin-tp1mx The effect, or one negative effect, is that less income is collected by the local transport authority or company.
It doesn't mean it is a **bigger** negative effect than the possible positive effect for the person getting to travel.........but it is still there.
@@Tao_Tology The community is served by the collective taking care of its most vulnerable members, not by being heartless and greedy and not caring about anyone except the financial bottom line. I want no part of a community in which police pull old infirm people off the bus -- and fine them too! Sometimes in handcuffs. It is an obscenity. And sadly I do live in exactly that community.

I thought I was the only one to do the 'car game.' My version is closer to John's but with a lot of screaming and cursing.
When the Libertarian concepts were accepted in America, we as a culture started this "I got mine." Lots of liberals in Jon's generation as older left their beliefs and became dedicated libertarians. They've added one more sentence since Trumpism. "I got mine. F you."
