  • In this video I will be showing you how I troubleshoot vintage guitar pedals. In this case, a 1970's Rams Head Big Muff. My father found this at a garage sale in Austin, Texas and purchased it for $2. What an amazing find. These pedals run around $500+ as this is a highly sought after design. And with good reason. But we can't celebrate yet, we first need to get this thing working.

@@sgtrutters5892 Is there a volume drop when you engage the dirty signal? I remember having a problem with a vintage fuzz doing the same thing, and I wonder if it was just something that all of those pedals did in that era. Tone is amazing and I don't want to change it.

What a great find! Did you ever sort out the low volume issue? I have a few “junk drawer” finds. I was given an old 70s MXR script logo Phase 90 that didn’t work. I resoldered the battery leads and cleaned her out. With a little love it started singing again.

Big Muffs are supposed to have MASSIVE volume gain, like 30db or something, so the fact that there's a drop points to there being something wrong with it still. I'm no expert (I'm actually having issues with a green Russian clone myself, which is why I clicked on the video), but I'd guess there's something going on with the base resistor to ground (I think 100K on the ram's head) on the second gain stage, if the resistance is too high it starts to get brittle sounding and the gain gets pretty low. It still seems like there's not much gain though. Have you checked it with a volt meter or gone through the signal path with an audio probe?
