So, fun little fact: The way SGE works in FFXIV may not be how it works in previous Final Fantasy games, but it IS consistent with how the Spiritmaster works in another Square Enix property: Bravely Default. In BD, the Spiritmaster is a powerful healer with a medical doctor/surgeon theme that enacts its healing through preventative measures and powerful barriers. What really sells the homage however, is the Spiritmaster's name in the Japanese version of Bravely Default: Sage.
That's actually really cool. I noted the similarities between FFXIV Sage and Bravely Default Spiritmaster, but I didn't realize that Spiritmaster's JP name was Sage.
Fun fact from a lore enthusiast Astrologian main, if you follow the events of your job quests, your WoL is technically one of the very best as you reunite and work with the Astrologian way of the Ishgardians and Sharlayans but also from the Hingan way. Locally refered as "Geomancy" your character learns that while the traditional way is to pull ether from the heavens through constellations, Geomancy is pulling ether from laylines in the deepest part of the planet. As traditional Astrologians uses the powers of the stars above, Geomancy practitioners uses the power of the "star" bellow their feets. The discipline was even created/discovered by the first King of Doma. To add even more to that, Hingan geomancers (and your character, since you learn to add those practices to your toolkit) work extremely well as exorcists. You even aid in the repair and consolidation of a magical exorcist ward all around the city of Kugane.
i loved the lore to AST and the connections to Geomancy. to me Geomancy seemed like a different by similar take as Conjuration as Conjury has the person using Aether taken from all facets of nature not just the earth through the elemental
I remember many years of hoping Geomancer would come to the game. Now I accepted that it's not happening, and that the AST storyline is the most that I'll get to feeling like I am a GEO....... which sucks, because I do not play to play AST!!!!
Also further worth noting, Sharlayan Astrology is pretty heavily implied to be an ancient offshoot of Black Magic. It's pointed out how much the traditional Sharlayn Astrologian garb, the Welkin set is extremely similar to that of traditional Black Mage attire. This is further displayed by the history of black mages in Final Fantasy History bearing crescent moon pendants upon their brimmed hats, and this is seen in the Black Mage mammets constructed by Sharlayan in the antitower. Furthermore, the ultimate display of power from a Black Mage is to call down a meteor from the Heavens, and Astrologians call upon the power of any and all celestial bodies.

My warrior of light is a certified glue eater, and I'm not much smarter. She may not have the brain for magic, but she's got a big heart filled mostly for appreciation for the healers who she sometimes makes panic when I forget to hit bloodwhetting when it's off cool down in mob pulls. I see you, I appreciate you, and I believe that you should heal me as little as you can so you can do violence too. Thank you for saving me from my stupid decisions when Holmgang can't.

I would argue that being able to do things like sacrifice your fairy for extra aether/use deployment and emergency tactics for niche situations/expedience for in battle peloton/even placing your fairy in specific spots to maximize its healing output does give scholar that tactical feel. Its toolkit has lots of versatile moves for niche situations compared to other healers that when you optimize you can feel like a chessmaster.
I'm doing my best to revive that DRG that keeps yeeting off the platform. The saddest thing is that when Synodic mentioned about screaming internally is my first thought is: "If you aren't, you're lying" P.S. Blood for the Blood lily, salt for the throne!
That scholar bit hits home. I main summoner (typically starting with it for new content so i can focus on learning mechanics) but Scholar is a close second and i typically end up focusing most about mechanics and callouts while playing with my friends. I'm also usually the first to decipher mechanics which i find really funny and fitting The brain is mightier than any sword after all
As a medical biologist, Sage was just right up my alley, thematically and aesthetically. Lovely combining medical science with magic. And lasers. Seeing this job in the Endwalker pre release trailers is what pushed me over the edge to try out FFXIV, and I'm glad I did. I was extra happy when the thing that got me into this wonderful game was also able to bond so well with me gameplay wise, especially when I started doing Savage content for the first time (looking forward to 6.4). Really love this job a lot.
But wasn't it mentioned in the AST Questline that Ishgardian Astrology is just observation of the Dragon Star and that they cannot even cast magic? There are quests where you heal knights and it is mentioned how surprising it is for them that an Astrologian can do that.
I just want to point out one thing about WHM. I know we have no spells directly called things like "Stone IV" anymore, but we STILL have Wind and Water spells. Cure 1-3, Medica, and Medica 2 are all Wind aspected, noted by the green casting vfx. I think Raise is too but I didn't have a subject to test this on. I'm unsure about Regen though. You can judge a spell's elemental property by their casting VFX. With that said, MOST of WHM's kit are water based spells. Glare, Dia, and Holy are the only unaspected spells we have as WHMs. Even role-based actions like Lucid Dreaming and Swiftcast use the water based casting VFX. Most of these spells even have a water-based sound effect to go along with them. It's really interesting!
Whm can create tornadoes, earth quakes, and floods because they have the same power source as black mages. We just don't have potent elemental spells because they won't give us a dps rotation 😢
I contest that Shadowbringers AST was the most lore accurate, specifically because of how the mechanics of the new card system mapped *perfectly* over the Elemental Wheel, with the Lord and Lady, Melee and Ranged, both mapped to the Submissions and Conquests respectively.

I'm not a good healer by any stretch, but I fondly remember the days of rolling up in a Full Party and switching to the healing style opposite of my co-healer. Good times.
My main WoL is a SCH main because, well. I was really inspired by Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening in the character creation process and the thought of a canonical battle strategist was fun for me. He serves as the 'raid lead' for the party of my Alt-WoLs and he loves being given the chance to provide strategic input by NPCs in the MSQ. And I've flavored his SCH main status into other classes he's taken up over the years. Using math and arcanima to calculate the precise positioning needed for Jumps, for instance.
I'm more of an Omni-Flex Main (gotta have that mount and hat), but of the Healers, Sage is my healer of choice. The aesthetics and mechanics of how it goes about doing it's role speaks to my DPS soul, and just looking at the artifact armor, it just screams doctor to me. I might not always heal, but when I do, I do so with LASERS!!!

My favorite part of SGE lore is how poetic its portfolio is: an expert of 3 fields; medicine, the study of the body, aetherology; the study of the soul, and sorcery, the manipulation of both. That line was leagues more bonechilling than the DRK questline every delivered when i first read it, in its own unique way
the way you described sages are being very precise and accurate made me picture them as the surgeons of the healers, and hey given their more futuristic aesthetics maybe that's meant to come across. very cool video!

Yay! I was waiting for this to come out after I saw the others! I really like the description of the Sage, but I would like to add a lil thing. Warning: The following info is what I got from the game in Feb 2022 when I started playing the job, and so may be wrong and I'm not gonna fact check it so take it with a lot of salt. Another part of being a Sage is a desire to protect people, hence the focus on shields with the battle magic. From what I got from the game, the soul crystal resonates with those who have an innate desire to shield people from harm, and to actively tend to and ensure the health of others (I got this from the first cutscene, where she effectively advertises to you the practice and the soul gem does its glowy thing). This does link into the Sage working in the clinic or the lab, but I think it changes their way of thinking to focusing more on the protection and preservation of those around them, rather than solely the pursuit of restoring people
The brief topic of Scholar being lore accurate. It works on many levels, military Strategy against the Empire and the Ascians. It work for the combat as scholars weave aether into many complex patterns and studying the patterns of the primals and other beings of mass aether. All the more as defensive magicks require restructure and refinement against the unique aether signatures. This is also evident in the names of the Codexes given to Scholar. Such as Tetrabiblos, Akademia, Etc.
I was actually thinking of the different ways in which each of the healing classes use their magic when I thought about all of the Scions healing you-know-who near the end of EW. It seemed a bit reduntent at first outside of just making for a good cutscene, but then I realized that each of them work in a slightly different way, and there by, they could each be doing something different in the healing process, meaning they had a much better chance of saving that person than by just having one of them healing, and it gave that scene a bit of new lore context for me and made it even more powerful.
Fun fact if you play as whm and you go through the MSQ where zenos just wipes out the camp. Krile will yell at you for just standing around and not healing people. Edit: That line is with any healer but yeah krile will get angry at you for just standing and watching.
My WoL took up Sage when it was offered because of what happened to Haurchefant. Perhaps he could still be alive if our understanding of the body and the ability to do precise healing had been available to us. TwT

Baby AST here, not good at optimizing healing as AST (and most of my Duty Finder parties love to W2W apparently) so Synastry and praying really, really hard has saved my party's butt multiple times from spicy pulls. I don't wanna rely on it, but it's looking mighty tempting as I start Shadowbringers dungeons...
I do love the healer lore, been a healer main since the beggining of my own journey. I was always a White Mage but have learnt to love Scholar and Sage too. I think moving forward a Sage would be my main, I do love that aspect of them being actually learning biology, being true healers. Having the answer when magic isn't the right choice, but knowing just how to use it when it is. Knowledge and Wisdom made manifest with the desire to help the world with more then just a brief flash of the arcane, but lasdting change through new treatments and the spread of knowledge.
I'm a WHM main. A duskwight WHM, Gridania thinks I shouldn't exist considering the history. Also an AST boomer who misses his cards. It's also hard to play on controller now with the button bloat. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the emotional aspect of Sage. To heal and to harm. To want to save lives but have known the pain of losing someone. A Sage knows they've failed before but still has to have the will to try.
I'm a White Mage main, and I loved discovering every part of the job's story. I've been leveling other jobs just in case, but WM is my main job in terms of the main storyline...
I really hope we get some sort of Shaman or Nature Mage next expansion ever since White Mage has become Light Mage. Especially since we're now missing a whole half of the Elemental Wheel
The only reason I have synastry on my hotbar is because there will always be that *one* tank stupid enough to pull all the dungeon mobs while their mitigation is down. Doesn't help much, but at least you can't say I wasn't trying when the entire party becomes spaghetti!
I'm actually a scholar main, and while I'm no raid lead as I feel like it's just not my place to lead. I know what every job can do and then some, what cooldowns the Monk has to the cooldowns of the tanks, and the theory on how they're best used. So I feel like I at least fulfill something of an actual scholar role.
I miss the job unique role actions. Esuna/Leeches/Exalted Detriment Rampart/Foresight/Shadowskin The animations and unique names were much better than the generic raising your weapon animation.
I know your comment is a few months old, but just letting you know there are mods that take less than 5 mind to set up that modify all WHM spells back to elemental nature magic, earth, air and wind. Let me know if you want a run down

I like what you said about SCH. I’m not a raid lead at all, but when we’re progging, my mind is always going on on what each person could do to optimize through mechanics. When do we need a party speed boost? When do we need a large shield? When to deploy Seraph? I use carbuncle and fairies to help show how to do mechanics. I pay attention to the way mechanics work so I can explain behaviorally how to deal with it (such as Void Stardust). But also, being a SCH is about thinking ahead, because to do your “cheats” through mechanics, you have to prep beforehand. But I also love their lore and their animations. Some folks hate the “computery” graphics, but it’s actually the most accurate trait of a Final Fantasy Scholar. Scan Magic has always been “techy” (see Stat-o-Vision trope). But it shows in their attack spells. The Scholars of Nym didn’t outdo Nym or Amdapor in raw magic. They never could. However, they were analytical. They were resourceful. They pin-point weaknesses so that a Simple Broil spell could be as powerful as a Glare. They find an opening to pour aether into it (Biolysis) vs. drilling like Día. Also, as someone who to both college and a very academic field in the military, it sorta resonates with me.
I main Ast and I'm actually love reading tarot cards irl and the stars and the night sky had always held a fascination for me combine that with the fact it's a healer and I had my perfect class (even if in the begain people we're screaming at me to use Nutral sect when it didn't exsit at the time I started playing UGH)

I have noticed more humor and job details than what it actually says about the WoL as one of these classes. But I am also not sure what your actual goal for these videos is so I can't say very much.
we might get Earth, Wind, and Water in Geomancer or possibly a revamped Black Mage to properly use the lore about pulling from points of aether in different places. Ul'dah is pulled to Astral Fire and thus needing Umbral Ice to balance out.
I miss when astro was the in-between of both a shield healer and a pure healer, I still feel like Sage should have been just a major update for Scholar, since both gameplay and lore they're so similar, they could have written that the sharlayan scholars had been researching the arts of Nym and made a new set of tools to aid in their magiks, it would been nice since Scholar always looks like a graduate and sage looks like a doctor, so then 80 to 90 you become a doctor, I just don't like how now the pure healers are vastly different themes but shield healers are identical
It's true that SCH excels in proactive play, even if they don't necessarily think tactically. The more you understand the flow of fights in FFXIV and what typical "tells" bosses have and how they've worked in past encounters prepares you for being a better SCH even in a brand new encounter. "Fights like this typically start with a raid wide so I'm going to critlo the tank and deploy it to everyone else" or "This enemy is a remodel of this other boss from an earlier encounter, so this move should require everyone to stack" etc.
WHM here and I play the "I'm too old for this crap" kind of healer. Seasoned, withered, but still powerful. I find it annoying WHM lost the elemental spells because it simply erased all the job progression we had from the beggining of the game til we reach WHM and beyond. That aside, I really wish WHM had a "bonk" emote so we could hit people with out staffs to show disaproval.
They homogenized healers then gave us sage. Look, scholar mains want our old class specialization back; DoTs. We used to have 5 DoTs. It also made sense as the Scholars of old had to become masters of poison and curses due to their enemies reliance upon it. Gameplay wise, it allowed scholars to plant a bunch of DoTs then properly heal and shield as needed and thus play in a tactical manner. Yes I am a scholar healer, yes I am the one explaining mechanics and calling movement during a fight.
I omniclass but my most consistent class I default to is a SCH. That being said - I've lost count of how many times Synastry helped me keep a suicidal tank alive, how dare.
If you already learned black and white magic lorewise, can you use ambient aether to power up other jobs? Like draw aether from the environment to make a stronger barrier or draw ambient aether to create a more powerful summon
Depends. Many of the melee jobs likely already do, with most attacks building up the gauges. As for the tanks, same thing. Gun breakers infuse cartridges with aether, to be used to cause many effects, from damage to regeneration. Warriors would use it to help patch themselves up, and to add more heft to their axes. Paladins use it to both cast spells, and to provide protection for themselves and allies. As for dark knights, it seems that the abyss is a vacuum effect, drawing aether to cause damage and to shield.

8:21 well technically astrologian is the busiest healer class atm with the cards, stickers, crowns, along with lightspeed it's crazy how Ast felt almost like dps to me, well most of the time you are going to spam one button but then cards appears, you need to target your teammate, play the card, while spamming one button at the same time that being said they are going to have some change on next big update, probably on november i dont know, ast doesnt seem like a popular healer atm because probably it has busy gameplay compared to other healer hopefully they will get more popular after the update
WHM main, but I also like Scholar. Astro... I am a mid Astro feeling bad about my lack of shield. I used to be able to suit my party better. I also dabbled in it when the cards were more unique

Blood for the Blood Lily! (Party) Tears for the Tear Fountain! Seriously though, I put so little focus into actually USING that poor lily anymore. WHM was my starting class, and the one I've stuck with as for all of the MSQ and first run into any new content. Even when it would be sooooo much easier to actually learn what the heck is going on as a dps. It just feels... *wrong* to progress as anything else. So WHM is most definitely my main. And I do rather enjoy blanketing whole parties (and wishing it extended to raid parties) in (probably over) healing aether. So if my actions are going to determine if the elementals start allowing more WHMs to come around, ignoring every other WoL who is one, I don't think it'll be too long before there's more. Just.. over look the occasionally smacking of baddies with blood soaked flowers at the expense of a tank's tears. Really, it's just a medicinal practice.
I main Scholar and when I started I was nervous as hell to call others out on how they played. Now I usually see things through to the first boss and start calling commands if needed XD That little know god complex suddenly turns to 11 when I see someone never moving from mechanics. HERE ME THY PEASANT!!! YOU ARE AT THEE MERCY OF MINE WILL!!!! STOP BEING AN ASS AND MOVE THINE!!! OR MINE GRIMOIRE WILL END UP IN IT!!!!
Can confirm that AST players are annoyed by everything the dev team does with the job. And yes I will be annoyed if Synastry gets removed. Even if it is a niche button, it is a still a button, AND STOP TAKING AWAY BUTTONS WHEN OUR CHARACTERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING STRONGER! This is hardly healer exclusive, but it feels like Shadowbringers and Endwalker both took away more things from each job than they gave, and healers got the worst of it since they have always had the least in the first place.
Now that I think about it... shouldn't White Mages be considerably diminished in ability, while they are in an area low or completely bereft of aether, like the Burn, in term of lore? More so than other characters, who draw power from within their own bodies?
Ya know, I kinda get why they consolidated similar actions from different jobs into role actions like esuna and low blow, but I'm still kinda disappointed that that little bit of distinction was taken out.
Huh...and here I thought I enjoyed Sage because it was just more fun to play than WHM. Turns out that it's what I wish I could do IRL as well. I've got a question: Since the Sage is someone with knowledge of alchemy and medical potions, does that mean that someone who is the level cap in Sage and the cap for Alchemist is the closest to being akin to a graduate student going for their doctorate?
I started the game as a conjurer and didn't level another job till the end of 5.0. I like to joke that I made this choice subconsciously, to make playing FF14 as boring as possible. Start in the worst city and most tedious role, to have an excuse for giving up on the game after a month. Lo and behold 2329 hours later still playing, still maining WHM. Can't imagine my sad faced aura WoL as anything other, so attached am I to the job. It made the duel against Zenos hit thematically since it was an embodiment of death vs the champion of life.
I was looking forward to this but I don't really understand as a Whitemage main what my main says about me. All the other ones had that "what it says about you" at the end 😅
I seriously hope we get access to some of the Forbidden white magic or even golemancy in the 7.0 and beyond

I would argue that being able to do things like sacrifice your fairy for extra aether/use deployment and emergency tactics for niche situations/expedience for in battle peloton/even placing your fairy in specific spots to maximize its healing output does give scholar that tactical feel. Its toolkit has lots of versatile moves for niche situations compared to other healers that when you optimize you can feel like a chessmaster.
I'm doing my best to revive that DRG that keeps yeeting off the platform.
The saddest thing is that when Synodic mentioned about screaming internally is my first thought is: "If you aren't, you're lying"

That scholar bit hits home. I main summoner (typically starting with it for new content so i can focus on learning mechanics) but Scholar is a close second and i typically end up focusing most about mechanics and callouts while playing with my friends. I'm also usually the first to decipher mechanics which i find really funny and fitting

As a medical biologist, Sage was just right up my alley, thematically and aesthetically. Lovely combining medical science with magic. And lasers.
Seeing this job in the Endwalker pre release trailers is what pushed me over the edge to try out FFXIV, and I'm glad I did.
I was extra happy when the thing that got me into this wonderful game was also able to bond so well with me gameplay wise, especially when I started doing Savage content for the first time (looking forward to 6.4).

But wasn't it mentioned in the AST Questline that Ishgardian Astrology is just observation of the Dragon Star and that they cannot even cast magic?
There are quests where you heal knights and it is mentioned how surprising it is for them that an Astrologian can do that.

I just want to point out one thing about WHM. I know we have no spells directly called things like "Stone IV" anymore, but we STILL have Wind and Water spells. Cure 1-3, Medica, and Medica 2 are all Wind aspected, noted by the green casting vfx. I think Raise is too but I didn't have a subject to test this on. I'm unsure about Regen though. You can judge a spell's elemental property by their casting VFX.
With that said, MOST of WHM's kit are water based spells. Glare, Dia, and Holy are the only unaspected spells we have as WHMs. Even role-based actions like Lucid Dreaming and Swiftcast use the water based casting VFX. Most of these spells even have a water-based sound effect to go along with them. It's really interesting!
Whm can create tornadoes, earth quakes, and floods because they have the same power source as black mages. We just don't have potent elemental spells because they won't give us a dps rotation 😢
I contest that Shadowbringers AST was the most lore accurate, specifically because of how the mechanics of the new card system mapped *perfectly* over the Elemental Wheel, with the Lord and Lady, Melee and Ranged, both mapped to the Submissions and Conquests respectively.

I'm not a good healer by any stretch, but I fondly remember the days of rolling up in a Full Party and switching to the healing style opposite of my co-healer. Good times.
My main WoL is a SCH main because, well. I was really inspired by Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening in the character creation process and the thought of a canonical battle strategist was fun for me. He serves as the 'raid lead' for the party of my Alt-WoLs and he loves being given the chance to provide strategic input by NPCs in the MSQ.
And I've flavored his SCH main status into other classes he's taken up over the years. Using math and arcanima to calculate the precise positioning needed for Jumps, for instance.
I'm more of an Omni-Flex Main (gotta have that mount and hat), but of the Healers, Sage is my healer of choice. The aesthetics and mechanics of how it goes about doing it's role speaks to my DPS soul, and just looking at the artifact armor, it just screams doctor to me.
I might not always heal, but when I do, I do so with LASERS!!!

My favorite part of SGE lore is how poetic its portfolio is: an expert of 3 fields; medicine, the study of the body, aetherology; the study of the soul, and sorcery, the manipulation of both. That line was leagues more bonechilling than the DRK questline every delivered when i first read it, in its own unique way
the way you described sages are being very precise and accurate made me picture them as the surgeons of the healers, and hey given their more futuristic aesthetics maybe that's meant to come across. very cool video!

Yay! I was waiting for this to come out after I saw the others! I really like the description of the Sage, but I would like to add a lil thing.
Warning: The following info is what I got from the game in Feb 2022 when I started playing the job, and so may be wrong and I'm not gonna fact check it so take it with a lot of salt.
Another part of being a Sage is a desire to protect people, hence the focus on shields with the battle magic. From what I got from the game, the soul crystal resonates with those who have an innate desire to shield people from harm, and to actively tend to and ensure the health of others (I got this from the first cutscene, where she effectively advertises to you the practice and the soul gem does its glowy thing). This does link into the Sage working in the clinic or the lab, but I think it changes their way of thinking to focusing more on the protection and preservation of those around them, rather than solely the pursuit of restoring people
The brief topic of Scholar being lore accurate. It works on many levels, military Strategy against the Empire and the Ascians. It work for the combat as scholars weave aether into many complex patterns and studying the patterns of the primals and other beings of mass aether. All the more as defensive magicks require restructure and refinement against the unique aether signatures. This is also evident in the names of the Codexes given to Scholar. Such as Tetrabiblos, Akademia, Etc.
I was actually thinking of the different ways in which each of the healing classes use their magic when I thought about all of the Scions healing you-know-who near the end of EW. It seemed a bit reduntent at first outside of just making for a good cutscene, but then I realized that each of them work in a slightly different way, and there by, they could each be doing something different in the healing process, meaning they had a much better chance of saving that person than by just having one of them healing, and it gave that scene a bit of new lore context for me and made it even more powerful.
Fun fact if you play as whm and you go through the MSQ where zenos just wipes out the camp. Krile will yell at you for just standing around and not healing people. Edit: That line is with any healer but yeah krile will get angry at you for just standing and watching.
In EW, there is another scene a NPC refers to you as a WHM.

My WoL took up Sage when it was offered because of what happened to Haurchefant. Perhaps he could still be alive if our understanding of the body and the ability to do precise healing had been available to us.

Baby AST here, not good at optimizing healing as AST (and most of my Duty Finder parties love to W2W apparently) so Synastry and praying really, really hard has saved my party's butt multiple times from spicy pulls. I don't wanna rely on it, but it's looking mighty tempting as I start Shadowbringers dungeons...
I do love the healer lore, been a healer main since the beggining of my own journey. I was always a White Mage but have learnt to love Scholar and Sage too. I think moving forward a Sage would be my main, I do love that aspect of them being actually learning biology, being true healers. Having the answer when magic isn't the right choice, but knowing just how to use it when it is. Knowledge and Wisdom made manifest with the desire to help the world with more then just a brief flash of the arcane, but lasdting change through new treatments and the spread of knowledge.
I'm a WHM main. A duskwight WHM, Gridania thinks I shouldn't exist considering the history.
Also an AST boomer who misses his cards. It's also hard to play on controller now with the button bloat.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the emotional aspect of Sage. To heal and to harm. To want to save lives but have known the pain of losing someone. A Sage knows they've failed before but still has to have the will to try.
I'm a White Mage main, and I loved discovering every part of the job's story. I've been leveling other jobs just in case, but WM is my main job in terms of the main storyline...
I really hope we get some sort of Shaman or Nature Mage next expansion ever since White Mage has become Light Mage. Especially since we're now missing a whole half of the Elemental Wheel

The only reason I have synastry on my hotbar is because there will always be that *one* tank stupid enough to pull all the dungeon mobs while their mitigation is down.
Doesn't help much, but at least you can't say I wasn't trying when the entire party becomes spaghetti!
I'm actually a scholar main, and while I'm no raid lead as I feel like it's just not my place to lead. I know what every job can do and then some, what cooldowns the Monk has to the cooldowns of the tanks, and the theory on how they're best used. So I feel like I at least fulfill something of an actual scholar role.
Not to mention SCH just about has an answer for every situation

I know your comment is a few months old, but just letting you know there are mods that take less than 5 mind to set up that modify all WHM spells back to elemental nature magic, earth, air and wind. Let me know if you want a run down

Huh. After hearing the Scholar Lore, now it makes sense as to why it feels like Scholar is the least Mana efficient healer (to me at least), compared to the other healers.

I like what you said about SCH. I’m not a raid lead at all, but when we’re progging, my mind is always going on on what each person could do to optimize through mechanics. When do we need a party speed boost? When do we need a large shield? When to deploy Seraph?
I use carbuncle and fairies to help show how to do mechanics.
I pay attention to the way mechanics work so I can explain behaviorally how to deal with it (such as Void Stardust).
But also, being a SCH is about thinking ahead, because to do your “cheats” through mechanics, you have to prep beforehand.
But I also love their lore and their animations. Some folks hate the “computery” graphics, but it’s actually the most accurate trait of a Final Fantasy Scholar. Scan Magic has always been “techy” (see Stat-o-Vision trope). But it shows in their attack spells.
The Scholars of Nym didn’t outdo Nym or Amdapor in raw magic. They never could. However, they were analytical. They were resourceful. They pin-point weaknesses so that a Simple Broil spell could be as powerful as a Glare. They find an opening to pour aether into it (Biolysis) vs. drilling like Día.
Also, as someone who to both college and a very academic field in the military, it sorta resonates with me.
So I’m assuming we’re doin all jobs? Can’t wait to see summoner. Swear it has a good argument for the cannon EW Job but derplander is never a mage :(

I main Ast and I'm actually love reading tarot cards irl and the stars and the night sky had always held a fascination for me combine that with the fact it's a healer and I had my perfect class (even if in the begain people we're screaming at me to use Nutral sect when it didn't exsit at the time I started playing UGH)
I was just thinking about this exact video today while watching the tank and dps videos. XD nice. I won't lie though. I have noticed more humor and job details than what it actually says about the WoL as one of these classes. But I am also not sure what your actual goal for these videos is so I can't say very much.
we might get Earth, Wind, and Water in Geomancer or possibly a revamped Black Mage to properly use the lore about pulling from points of aether in different places. Ul'dah is pulled to Astral Fire and thus needing Umbral Ice to balance out.

I miss when astro was the in-between of both a shield healer and a pure healer, I still feel like Sage should have been just a major update for Scholar, since both gameplay and lore they're so similar, they could have written that the sharlayan scholars had been researching the arts of Nym and made a new set of tools to aid in their magiks, it would been nice since Scholar always looks like a graduate and sage looks like a doctor, so then 80 to 90 you become a doctor, I just don't like how now the pure healers are vastly different themes but shield healers are identical
It's true that SCH excels in proactive play, even if they don't necessarily think tactically. The more you understand the flow of fights in FFXIV and what typical "tells" bosses have and how they've worked in past encounters prepares you for being a better SCH even in a brand new encounter. "Fights like this typically start with a raid wide so I'm going to critlo the tank and deploy it to everyone else" or "This enemy is a remodel of this other boss from an earlier encounter, so this move should require everyone to stack" etc.
As a Sage enthusiast, I am driven by some key things.
Lasers and powerful barrier shields.
Personally my favorite concept was the angry healer. So be happy White Mage and Astro mains you are loved by me.
Healer: The job where you make your problems everyone else's and flex your god complex by deciding who lives and who doesn't.
WHM here and I play the "I'm too old for this crap" kind of healer. Seasoned, withered, but still powerful. I find it annoying WHM lost the elemental spells because it simply erased all the job progression we had from the beggining of the game til we reach WHM and beyond. That aside, I really wish WHM had a "bonk" emote so we could hit people with out staffs to show disaproval.
It's why eureka stick is the best one in the game. It's very pointy for stabbing people with.
They homogenized healers then gave us sage. Look, scholar mains want our old class specialization back; DoTs. We used to have 5 DoTs. It also made sense as the Scholars of old had to become masters of poison and curses due to their enemies reliance upon it. Gameplay wise, it allowed scholars to plant a bunch of DoTs then properly heal and shield as needed and thus play in a tactical manner.
Yes I am a scholar healer, yes I am the one explaining mechanics and calling movement during a fight.
I omniclass but my most consistent class I default to is a SCH. That being said - I've lost count of how many times Synastry helped me keep a suicidal tank alive, how dare.
If you already learned black and white magic lorewise, can you use ambient aether to power up other jobs? Like draw aether from the environment to make a stronger barrier or draw ambient aether to create a more powerful summon
RDM quest plays with that idea, although it doesn't get realized overmuch, but imagine something like white or black magic with *accelerated* aether.
Depends. Many of the melee jobs likely already do, with most attacks building up the gauges. As for the tanks, same thing. Gun breakers infuse cartridges with aether, to be used to cause many effects, from damage to regeneration. Warriors would use it to help patch themselves up, and to add more heft to their axes. Paladins use it to both cast spells, and to provide protection for themselves and allies. As for dark knights, it seems that the abyss is a vacuum effect, drawing aether to cause damage and to shield.

it's crazy how Ast felt almost like dps to me, well most of the time you are going to spam one button but then cards appears, you need to target your teammate, play the card, while spamming one button at the same time
that being said they are going to have some change on next big update, probably on november
i dont know, ast doesnt seem like a popular healer atm because probably it has busy gameplay compared to other healer

WHM main, but I also like Scholar. Astro... I am a mid Astro feeling bad about my lack of shield. I used to be able to suit my party better. I also dabbled in it when the cards were more unique

Seriously though, I put so little focus into actually USING that poor lily anymore. WHM was my starting class, and the one I've stuck with as for all of the MSQ and first run into any new content. Even when it would be sooooo much easier to actually learn what the heck is going on as a dps. It just feels... *wrong* to progress as anything else. So WHM is most definitely my main. And I do rather enjoy blanketing whole parties (and wishing it extended to raid parties) in (probably over) healing aether. So if my actions are going to determine if the elementals start allowing more WHMs to come around, ignoring every other WoL who is one, I don't think it'll be too long before there's more. Just.. over look the occasionally smacking of baddies with blood soaked flowers at the expense of a tank's tears. Really, it's just a medicinal practice.
To be fair, SGE has already been homogenized thanks to Addersgall being Aetherflow 2

Can confirm that AST players are annoyed by everything the dev team does with the job. And yes I will be annoyed if Synastry gets removed. Even if it is a niche button, it is a still a button, AND STOP TAKING AWAY BUTTONS WHEN OUR CHARACTERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING STRONGER! This is hardly healer exclusive, but it feels like Shadowbringers and Endwalker both took away more things from each job than they gave, and healers got the worst of it since they have always had the least in the first place.
It's always nice when they take away a skill from the 60-80 section and just reintroduce it to you at max level. /s
Now that I think about it... shouldn't White Mages be considerably diminished in ability, while they are in an area low or completely bereft of aether, like the Burn, in term of lore? More so than other characters, who draw power from within their own bodies?
Ya know, I kinda get why they consolidated similar actions from different jobs into role actions like esuna and low blow, but I'm still kinda disappointed that that little bit of distinction was taken out.

I've got a question: Since the Sage is someone with knowledge of alchemy and medical potions, does that mean that someone who is the level cap in Sage and the cap for Alchemist is the closest to being akin to a graduate student going for their doctorate?
I started the game as a conjurer and didn't level another job till the end of 5.0. I like to joke that I made this choice subconsciously, to make playing FF14 as boring as possible. Start in the worst city and most tedious role, to have an excuse for giving up on the game after a month. Lo and behold 2329 hours later still playing, still maining WHM. Can't imagine my sad faced aura WoL as anything other, so attached am I to the job. It made the duel against Zenos hit thematically since it was an embodiment of death vs the champion of life.
I was looking forward to this but I don't really understand as a Whitemage main what my main says about me. All the other ones had that "what it says about you" at the end 😅
