    My older sister, who doesn't even game, even loves White Mage. But she's biased because she's an actual doctor. She was first introduced to the concept of WHM way back when I was playing FF1 on NES in the early 90's. She never got into playing the game, but she really dug the WHM's sprite.
    Many MANY moons later after we had both grown up, I offered to cover her Halloween costume one year. By then she was a nurse pursuing her doctorate and I got her a staff and WHM robe to wear to a Halloween party. I did my best to cobble together a Paladin costume so I could be her tank(this was 05, at the height of my FFXI addiction). It worked perfectly, as she was a nurse and I was cop. Healer and protector. She loved how I fit that together. 16 years later, and she still has that old robe in a jersey frame in her house, hung on the wall with the picture of us at that party.
    I recently got my 15 yr old niece into FFXIV and she started as WHM. I imagine that choice was at least influenced by that display in her family room.

    There is another detail about Yuna, her clothing resembles a miko attire, a kind of shamanic sacerdotise who are devoted to shintoist temples of Japan. And you know what colours they usually wear? Red and white, like white mages.

      i was going to mention this as the possible reason white mage had red, because in ff1 white mages all appeared to be women, and the shrine maiden traditionally wore red and white clothes. this would also make sense with the dancer mix from revenent wings, as miko shamenism used ritual dances.

    An interesting fact about FFXIV's white mage is that their Limit Break 3 is called Pulse of Life, which is a tribute and easter egg to Aerith's Limit Break 3. The animation shows the white mage kneeling and praying to Aerith's weapon.

    You were very wrong about FFXI. White Mage has access to all the best healing abilities only they can use. Full Cure, Reraise IV, Cura III, Curaga V, Cure VI, Protectra V, Shellra V, Sacrifice, Esuna....ect.
    Also Mind increases enfeebling potency of their spells.

    • @timepassesbye
      @timepassesbye 3 роки тому +1

      scholar does gain access to quite a few of those through their stratagems. that can make pretty much any enhancing spell aoe, haste excluded, their shell and protect are included and they are at just a slightly lower potency to white mages. paladin actually gets a stronger protect now, and gets access to aoe healing. scholar gets esuna as well as most of the NA spell line. but yes, i agree there wasn't the best representation of XI in this video, but it wasn't a bad start

    It should also be noted that in XI, resurrection magic (especially Reraise) was exclusive to them and they brought back and expanded upon FF1's defensive spells, with the prefix "bar" - they generally granted resistance to various status ailments and elements.
    Love 11, by far the most comprehensive iteration of the Job system to date.

    • @timepassesbye
      @timepassesbye 3 роки тому +1

      agree that XI does an amazing job of really showing what each job has to offer, but resurrection magic isn't exclusive to white mage. red mage, and scholar also have access to raise 1, summoner gets access to raise 2 and reraise 2 through caitsith as well as a reraise 3 type effect through caitsith's astral flow. scholar also gets raise 2 and 3 and reraise 2 and 3, but only white mage gets arise. white mage is also the only mage to gain access to cure 5 and 6 as well as fullcure later on. also white mages do have access to maces and hammers which wasn't noted in the video

    23:15 - Dont forget, when using benediction you are essentially sacrificing yourself for the rest of the party. The enmity gained from using Benediction would dwarf any/all enmity gained by the other party members, which basically just means when a WHM would use benediction the mob would target them and not stop attacking them until the WHM was dead. Usually the WHM would use it when its a guarantee they cant kill the mob, and they would just try their hardest to stay alive while the rest of the party ran away to avoid dying.
    It just goes back to your original point of the white mage sacrificing themselves in previous games. Just thought it was interesting! :)

    15:11 Aerith knowing about her death beforehand wildy speculative. "Noble sacrifices" are acts that're completed by a selfless hero/heroine in order to save (rescue) a person or group that are at risk of danger. She just got stabbed from behind with a sword while minding her own damn business, really.

    FF3 NES White Mage is my favorite of all. The White spells Exit, Mini, and Toad didn’t work the way they did in battle like they did later on. In combat, these were kill spells.
    The time between the Water Crystal to the Earth Crystal, if you kept a White Mage the whole time they had a lot more MP for those low level Mini, Toad, and Exit spells and effective stats to cast it effectively.
    Once I realized that, the Dark Cave with the splitting enemies became a joke.
    Same can be done with the Black Mage’s Warp, but it was a higher level spell that was competitive with Fire 3 and Bio which you could do AoE damage with.
    Anyway, great vid! And if a souls-like FF is true, then hopefully we can bring back the justice of a hammer smashing white mage!
    Edit: Some clarifications that weren’t mentioned:
    -In FF5, they had a unique staff called the Flail and Morning Star which dealt random damage, sometimes high, sometimes low making them better physical fighters than the Black Mage.
    Krile’s white mage outfit, the kitty cat costume, is a direct reference to the White Mage upgrade Devout.
    -In FFT (PS version), they were renamed Priest and commonly used as an enemy in when fighting the Glabados Church. Staves also dealt more damage than the Wizard’s rod. White Mages didn’t get to use flails as they were redefined as Axes. This is also where the white mage robes changed based on faction with the classical white/red used by the main party and the Nanten armies, green used by bandits, and blue used for allied Hokuten armies.
    Unique classes replaced the Squire class for unique characters, which is why Alma has access to Counter Tackle and other support abilities found amongst other unique classes. Since White Mage was renamed Priest, the more powerful versions were Holy Priest/Celebrant, Cleric, Princess as all spent time serving in the church.
    -FF2A’s Seer is directly related to the FF3 Devout class, being an upgrade to the White Mage having the exact same cat hood.

    A little piece of trivia for White Mages in FFXIV, prior to the Stormblood expansion, white mages had an ability called cleric stance that would switch their mind stat with their intelligence stat so they could do more damage with their damaging spells. When Stormblood launched however, all spells that were casted by the healers would scale off of mind, regardless for what its purpose was.

FFXIV is full of them, but there’s also Auron from FFX and Snow (or the Sentinel role) from FFXIII. I think it might be a rarer thing in the franchise because it’s harder to make fun and to fit the mechanics into the game’s system, and that’s what makes me interested in learning more about it.

    Glossed over some important stuff in FF13. I know it's an unpopular series, but dang.
    Vanille wears pink, uses binding rods as her weapons, and specializes in the Medic role, alongside Saboteur and Ravager. Naturally, she had one of the lowest HP stats. And to top it all off? She makes a noble sacrifice of herself twice in the FF13 trilogy.
    Hope might not wear pink, but his outfit bears the same color scheme as Porom from FFIV, in addition to being a child like Porom. He attacks with Boomerangs, similar to Eiko, Garnet, and Rosa using ranged weapons instead of being staff/rod locked. And he has the lowest HP of any character.
    Serah was a summoner, able to conjure monsters from crystals. She was more proficient in healing than Noel. And guess what? Serah sacrifices her life in the end.
    Man, I'm disappointed that the FF13 segments were so short. There was plenty worth mentioning. I kinda get the feeling you didn't play/research them that much.

    For FF Tactics A2. The Seer does not replace the White Mage. The Seer only had Cura, Raise, Esuna. WM has Curaga, Arise and Refresh as upgrades. Seers did have the -ra level black magick and the all important spell, Magick Frenzy (Cast a spell and do a basic attack on all targets hit with the spell) and Recharge (gain a net of 20MP). Personally never used a Seer main but I did do a 2 battle mages. One was mainly physical, equipping two swords. The other mained as an illusionist, whose spells hit all enemy targets, then had two rods equipped as well.
