He isn't even trying to get out of debt. I don't know what his after tax income is at $225,000 but he could easily live on 50,000 and still have up to $150,000 to apply to his loans or $12,500/ month but he chooses to live in an expensive house, with an expensive car and takes luxury vacations. I don't feel sorry for him at all.

The article states that after taxes, he brings in $13,300/month or 156k/year. Even if he lived on 50k a year, he still WOULDNT be able to pay off the loan in ten years! No agreeing with his choices, just saying.

My teacher knows this guy personally. After she found out Dave Ramsey had found out about him (she teaches a course based off of Dave Ramsey) she tried to reach out to him. He wouldn’t answer. They went to high school together and apparently he was a very smart guy who she never thought he’d end up in debt at all.

He's spending around 1% of his income on the student loans -and it's only paying down interest. RIDICULOUS!!! He absolutely doesn't care about getting out of debt.

I went to public school, went to a state college for the in state tuition, as did my wife (we both have only bachelor’s degrees). Last year we grossed over 155k and this year will be closer to 180k. Next year likely 220k (all things being equal). I’m 34 and my wife is 32...We don’t have children yet, but I can guarantee we will not push our kids to go to college just to go to college. My view of education has changed dramatically. Go to college if its truly going to get you a return on investment. Otherwise you will live with that debt forever. I’ve seen some of my close friends struggling to make payments and say over and over they’d wished they either went to a cheaper school or did something else. I actually now admire entrepreneurs more than ever. I am not one but we are in the process of starting our own business which would be self funded. If you are young and considering a masters degree just because, it’s likely not even close to worth it. Think wisely about the course you are putting yourself on before you execute, because almost everything you do in your 20’s will set the course for the rest of your life (there are always exceptions of course).

Tamara Laird In NY last year she made 75k as a per diem. I guess it depends where you live. Shes really a Respiratory Therapist but she was hired into this position and took it for the schedule and pay. Most Cath Labs typically hire nurses into this position.

With ALL of these stories of loan debt, despite all the pressure I received, no matter what anybody said to me about the "Value" of education...I'm so glad I just got my Associates Degree and went straight into the workforce. I knew it was the right thing to do for me but I had no idea of the true headaches I was avoiding.

Well yeah, it's far too easy to blame others for your misfortune that you created yourself.
The problem is that these people commit to this debt when they're 18 or even younger. The least we can do is warn the next generation of what awaits them if they just continue the path that their parents and society has set them on.
When you're 18 going to college in 2011, high school didn't teach you anything about money, parents urging you to go to college. College loans are as easy as a click of a button. This whole thing is a scam, taking advantage of just turned 18 adults.

Dentistry is a great service if done right for both dentist and patient. I've noticed also certain dental practices with about 20 people running around and all that student loan debt and don't trust they aren't ripping me off. My dentist is middle aged, has two rotating assistants, receptionist, owns his building and his brother owns a mortgage company on the second floor. In other words, he operates and lives below his means. My dentist never overcharges and actually tries to save me money. And he graduated from Northwestern dental school back in the late 80's.

Angela- The key is your dentist graduated in 1980's when college was affordable and made sense. Since 1980 college has increased 260%, household items 120%. Add interest to the debt and you have a cluster f*%k of debt.
Pretty sure since he graduated in the 1980's, his education was far, far cheaper than it is now. And if he owns the building, pretty sure he's paying it off or even paid it off.
Heck, his brother is even probably paying rent for the 2nd floor. He's probably getting a far better deal than he would somewhere else, and knowing you have someone reliable there to pay rent and staying long term is a great deal of stress gone.

I would love to go to dental school but that debt is ridiculous. I’m in my last year of dental hygiene school and I’ll be graduating debt free due to scholarships. I’m proud of myself for choosing this route even though I’ll be making less.

This is so true.. i am a 4th year medical student and all I needed to do to get the federally insured loans was be a us citizen and accepted to a us med school.. it is sham and it makes the schools have 0 incentive to lower costs because the funding is guaranteed.

Yep, my friend learned that the hard way. We both have Chemical Engineering Degrees and now we both have jobs making 70k/year. However, I went through Community College and then transferred to a State College and came out with only 25k in student Loans. My friend on the other hand went to a Private College and came out with over 150k in student loans.
My friend is a Medical Doctor and he borrowed 400k. This guy was living well beyond his means, living, spending, has kids that most of us cannot even think about affording. This will always be on his credit report and there's no bankruptcy for this. We tax payers are funding his lavish lifestyle.

This is one of my favorite Dave clips. There is actually a part 2. He talks more after the commercial break, which was the part I really enjoyed. The part two really shows his compassionate side. He talks about how this family must feel, how people are now upset at him and then tells him that he (Dave) would fly his family to Nashville to meet with a financial coach to get this started. It's really worth opening the podcast and listening to both segments.
My 29k student loans isn’t too bad anymore
U can pay that off in a year. I paid 20k off in 10 months with an pre-tax income of 48k. Granted i live at home, but i put about 70% of my check every month into my loans. And what was with a car lease payment of 300/monthand insurance of 1400/year in CT where we pay property tax on vehicles every year ($850).

I’m on a similar path and thankfully live at home as well nearly debt I’ll be completely done with my student loans by February 2019 sticking to the strict payment plan
In retrospect I did graduate in 2013 and move back home towards the end of 2014.... if I didn’t move back home and been fortunate to be able to I would have another 5-10 years dealing with debt

Thank goodness that in Australia we have limits on the amount of HECS (Uni fees) that a student can accumulate. Once that limit is hit, no more debt.

Without the Govt backing these loans, the tuition's wouldn't be this high.
I definitely think it's more of a supply-driven problem than a demand-driven problem. To me the demand isn't excessively high, the supply is excessively low and that is causing prices to increase dramatically. I think tax payer money would be better spent funding new colleges to open than paying for everyone's debt.

I think it’s crazy how much you can take out in student loans in the U.S.
In Canada we have a lifetime limit, so it wouldnt even be possible to take out that much. For example, for undergrad you can take out a maximum of 75,000. And lets say you go on to med school after, s a combined amount of 150,000 (that includes the amount you took out for your undergrad degree)
Every Time I really become really worried about my debt I watch these videos to feel a little better, because my debt is no way near the amounts heard in these videos. I will never understand how and why someone earning a wage over $100,000 a year can't live frugally and sock away a ton of dough for the future.

I don't understand how we (taxpayers) can guarantee student loans that aren't even used for tuition. I saw some friends, first hand, receive their student loan $ and immediately run out and go on shopping sprees and vacations. How is the "living expenses" portion of the federally insured student loan figured? Just a 19 year old saying how much they'd like to live on??
Mama Sara If student loans are to continue, they should put heavy restrictions. Like you should be working if you get the student loan. And your amount barrowed should be justified by your future career or job's projected income.
They want you to borrow as much as possible at 7% interest on non dischargeable debt
The "living expenses" portion of federal loans is calculated by the school's financial aid office--determined by whether the student clicks "off-campus housing", "dormitory," or "living at home." Obviously, if a kid chooses "living at home," they'll get a much smaller offer than if they pick "living off campus." So a lot of students who live at home can still claim they're going to live on their own and get extra loans they don't need. Of course, there is a limit, but it's pretty high...

Mike Nelson, I agree. People should not be allowed to borrow that much. The problem is government intervention by way of subsidy so universities can charge higher tuition fees because of the guarantee.

From their website, the USC dental school costs 150k /year for 4 years. So that's 600k. How do the students pay for this, if not with student loans?

I wanted to go to USC for dental school but their prices are insane they need to rethink their program costs considering going to another school would still get you the same degree

I've paid off all my debts except for 12K of student loans. Nothing else I've done was the waste of money that they are. I can explain/understand every loan I ever took except these. It's a Federally sanctioned scam, and if any private lender ran it the same way, there'd be congressional hearings on it being corrupt and 'predatory.' If you haven't used them, don't, and if you have, find a way to pay them off, ASAP.
I don't feel so bad with my SL debt anymore after seeing this. Plus I have a plan.

As a second year dental student, thank god for in-state tuition. When I'm done I'll still owe around 300k though.

I live in Canada. Our student loan is interest-free until 12 months from the moment we graduate, and then we get a 3% interest. So, not interest-free, but low-interest for sure. We're not as good as Norway and others with their free education, but we have a lot of grants and subsidies. I hope USA will improve their system soon.

I know right, that thing breaks even something minor the engineering on that is going to require a dealership part and dealership technician...and dealerships are upper end for every type of car.

College is shown as a necessity but priced as a luxury. I go to Penn State which in-state is 33k (which is insane for in-state) so i am transferring to another in-state school that's 23k a year. I still think even that is high but it's whatever at this point. The thought of being 22 and 100k in debt is terrifying.
He doesn't worry about it because he believes debt forgiveness will solve everything if he just waits it out.

Nope in the case of a traditional loan what happens is eventually if you don't pay the company first sends it to collections and your credit will take a big hit. If you still don't pay after awhile they will end up selling your debt to a third party to try and recoup as much money as they can because it isn't worth trying to get it from you anymore. That third party who now owns the rights to your debt will begin harassing you trying to get you to pay the full amount so they can make money.
In the case of these loans this guy has he will pay 10% of his take home income on the loan for 20 years and after that the remaining balance is forgiven but that forgiven amount is considered taxable income. That form for tax purposes is a 1099-C
Unreal. Absolutely mindblowing. The fact that he still gets to live a wonderful life, have a nice car, nice home, and barely use any of his monthly income to pay back his loans while being forgiven in 10 years is infuriating. Examples like this set a dangerous precedent and teach our young people horrible lessons about money and does not prepare them for a successful life at all. The system is broken, and it needs to be fixed. Unfortunately it'll probably have to crumble before any real change is made.

So glad I live in Australia. $10,000 a year for pretty much any degree, all paid for and subsidized by the government and once you graduate it only comes out of your salary at a set amount after you pass a certain threshold (lowest is 4% of the total debt per year after passing $55,000 income). It's also interest free but it is CPI indexed.

Tuition rates have gone up because state and federal support has dramatically decreased. We haven't made up for that with tuition, despite the increases. Whatever Dave thinks, universities aren't staffed by volunteers. 🤷♀️
Seems with that salary he could afford to pay considerably more than 1500 a month, especially if they trimmed their lifestyle. This guy's just looking to game the system.
FYI you pay income tax on federal student loan forgiveness. That will be around 33% for this ortho, or 700K by the end of the 25 year "plan" plus 1500/mo for 25 years or 350K. Not to mention his life of higher interest rates due to high debt to income ratio. His home was probably financed at 9-12%, so on a 30 year note it will cost him 4x the sale price. Refinancing wont help until his debt is lowered substantially

I am stunned at the difference in the cost of education versus the actual earning potential. There is almost no incentive to go to university. Be smart, go to community college for the first two years and then transfer into the best of the cheaper programs.
Hooray for countries where you have public universities/colleges.
Only thing you need to do there is to make sure that your graduates will stay in your country and use what they learned there (or at least that ammount of graduates leaving your country is similiar to ammount of graduates coming in).
Which is much easier and simpler to do then making dozens of thousands people start their life with huge debts hoping to somehow make it back before they are 50.
This is insane, and there is no way for this to end well.
