I think if you're struggling to do a lot of these movements, this makes sense. But if you're looking to buy one thinking you'd do movements with it, I prob wouldn't suggest.
Great review! I picked one up recently as well and agree with your review. My 3M tape also began to peel off, so I used some UHMW tape to secure the ends. The only other callout I have is that I wish they included someway to securely store the bolts for the seat pad when not in use as there is no great place for them and worry they will get lost. Something like a magnetic head or a location under the seat where they can be secured.
Good stuff Brandon! It’s great to see the extra 5/8 pins worked for your strap safeties. I’m planning on going that route myself for my PR5000, though gonna wait for your take on their 2.0 strap safeties. Thanks for your hard work!
Any idea the usable shaft length of the supplied 5/8" pins Brandon? Vendetta 180° Adapters for RG 2.0 Lever Arms require 5/8" x (minimum) 5" long.... Wondering could the Rep one's be used there?! ;0
@@BasementBrandon Stay posting bro you inspired my brother and I alot, watching your deadlifts vids along with Chris Jones before our deadlift sessions helped with cues and mind muscle connection. Still amazed at how effortless you make any lift look w/that pokerface. I remember you being able to deadlift in the 600 hundreds with ease but your back got destroyed weeding your yard years ago lol
I kind of thought this was going to be a joke the first time I saw this. After you mentioning some exercises I started thinking about it and this is a real winner.
I bought this seat and was trying to figure out a way to store this upright on my PR-5000. I pleased to find it fit perfectly upright on the rear stabilizer brace. It does not get in the way of any attachments, to include the Lat pull down with eights.
Great review. I’ve been on the fence (invoice sitting in inbox), as I think the cost with pad is more than I’d like. It would definitely come in handy and more and more uses remain to be discovered!
I think if you can see yourself using it for some of these exercises it would be worthwhile, but if you're just looking to add gear to add gear, prob will collect dust.
@@BasementBrandon I've got a few things in mind for it, like Seal rows and more. I originally thought to build my own until they announced the impending release.
I ended up ordering the spotter arms and the utility seat at the same time, not realizing Rep spotter arm holes are 1 inch even for my PR4000 rack. Both pins means it’s compatible with the spotter arms and the rack itself that’s 5/8. I do agree you should be able to pick though as some people with 1” racks will have no use for those 5/8 pins. The protective tape also came off on mine on one side again and again so in a rage I tore off smaller piece and am using it on the side I’m seal rowing on and it’s holding up. I’m going to come up with a more permanent solution. Great review, thanks for making it!
My tape fell off as well even after heavy weights on it. Never got either side to take but I've seen others sand down the bottom edges to help adhesion. I just haven't tried that yet as I tossed the tape.
Great review, seems like they really took their time with developing this one and love how it fits competitor racks. I am still on the fence since I would probably only use it for seal rows on my spotters.
Yeah I told them when they asked if I were interested that I didn't see much use for it since I have so much crap already, but figured being able to test the versatility between brands might help some make up their mind.
Super solid utility seat, I love mine also. I also use it in a Rogue (Monster Lite) rack. If in the market for one, I see no reason why you wouldn't get this utility seat above all other brands.
Deciding if I want to pick this up. I would probably use it for seal rows mostly. I can’t store it on my rack due to Ares and plate storage. Storage would be my issue.
This looks like it would be perfect for variable depth box squats. I don't think it would work in my R-3, though; 24" is too shallow of an inside depth.
Thanks for the great review. You are one of a few go-to reviewers I check before spending my money. Regarding the question of this seat fitting both 47" & 49", can anyone tell me how this done? Do you add a section, take a section out? I called Rep Fitness and that is 10 minutes of my life I will never get back. I have a Rogue rack. Thanks.
Wow, finally got another Rep rep to answer me. His answer "The Utility Seat will come with two different sets of liners, shown in the attached photos. The thinner liner is what will allow the Utility Seat to work with a 47" Rack. The thicker liner is for 49" Racks, and are used to take up that negative space that would come with using the thinner liners on a 49" Rack, this will keep the Seat from sliding back and forth while in use." The liners referred to actually look like rubber bumpers that go underneath. Install them for one length and remove them for the other.
They should put a lip on the pad so it extends down the side of the bench and then have holes in the bench side and pad lip so you can use band pegs to secure the pad
I’m just considering a utility seat , specifically for seal rows , and also a cambered Swiss bar like your using . Just from watching your video , it looks like the bar gets pretty close to hitting the bench . Wondering what your thoughts are on that . I’m looking to avoid any banging and clanging if possible . Perhaps a home made diy utility bench could be made a bit thinner to create a bit more space inbetween the cambered bar and top of the diy utility bench . Or I guess I could use some sort of handles/grips on a straight barbell to avoid banging . Greetings from Scotland 🏴
So if you get like a real seal row type barbell it will give you more clearance than the few inches my multigrip bar provides. I think otherwise it just comes with the territory.
Do you think they would have been better off making the pad shorter so you could still access the handles (i.e. REV 2.0)? Or would that just be not enough pad?
How are you able to get two pins in per side? It doesn’t line up on my drop down safeties, spotter arms, or directly on the rack. All items are Rep, so it is weird that they don’t line up. The hole spacing looks like a sine wave pattern.
Thx for the review. I'm wondering where you sourced the bright zinc low profile safety pins (vs cotter) you mentioned you replaced with the black ones REP sent with the seat? I called REP...unfortunately they can't sell the pins alone...yet
Any thoughts on the usefulness of this vs something like the Sorinex Bulldog pad? I know they aren't the same, but seal rows seem like one of the major functions of the seat+pad. I might have missed it, but is there much difference between this and the Rogue? There's only $30 difference between the two, plus Rogue's shipping. (Always hold out for a BF purchase)
I don't believe it's easy to do a full on seal row with the bulldog since you can't lay parallel with the floor. I think they both are pieces that offer a lot of potential, if you're ready/willing/able to set it up. For this and the Rogue, biggest differences is that this has integrated handles, can have a bench tad attach, and can fit on multiple brands/racks.
Was going to buy this for seal rows for their current sale but it looks really awkward. thanks for sharing this video. I wont be getting this but I ended up getting the open trap bar on sale at least lol. if rep were to make metal sleeker then it wont be so thick with the padding so thd seal row would work better. the elite fts leg curl/sealrow combo looks a lot better
I’m thinking about getting this for my 6post ares and setting my spotter arms to waist weight and using 2 ankle cuffs at the low row location to use for a reverse hyper. Do you think this would work decent?
I love that it can actually mount to either 5/8 or 1 “ racks. 😂 sniff test !! Always appreciate UHMW because Rogue doesn’t believe in it for RML series.
400 dollars for a raised platform....ooof. Reminds me of the Ares and Athena where the functionality is intriguing but there's not rational way to justify the price tag unless you enjoy watching money burn.
To be fair, the seat itself is just 250, which includes free shipping, which would likely cost in the range of $50+ given the size and weight of it. It also has quite a lot of nice features/build quality. I do agree it may not be for everyone, but I wouldn't consider this to be expensive for what it is.
Rep utility seat looks pretty solid...... However, once again we see how useless trolley arms are. Literally the worst purchase I've ever made for my garage gym.
