I saw these guys when I was in high school in the 70s and I couldn’t hear for a week they were so loud ...they did that song and when he Ian Gillian screamed it was crazy loud! The warm-up band was a new group called ZZ Top! I remember the The guitarist for ZZ Top had a mirrored guitar and they would hit it with a spotlight and he would blind people in the audience with it!
I saw them twice in the early 1970's being there live is mindblowing, I saw Led Zeppelin live in 1977 and it was great but Deep Purple and Ian Gillan's voice can't be bettered. I have seen many concerts but none impressed me as much as Deep Purple. Every person plays their instruments as masters and that includes Ian's voice.
Saw them in Montreal at the time of this album Deep Purple in Rock with Uriah Heep opening Believe me I don't remember what they played. You should do Speed king from the same album people always go with the same tune but they have so many good song that are not so well known !
True- and also just add, in the case of this “performance”, I believe they were also recording and so audiences were basically made to stay still 😀. Plus I remember my grandma telling me once that she went to some televised show however she didn’t know guests in advance. As you’re watching you’ll see that there’s a wide variety of ages the cameras picking up on. A lot of older people as well who probably had no idea who they were coming up against 😂. Love this version as well as the album version. Phenomenal band.
Oh it’s so amazing to watch these guys listen to this, when some of us were so lucky to grow up with in our bedrooms at 15/16/17 yrs, we were blessed ❤🙏
You guys are great. You've witnessed a godlike performance and lived through it. i can do nothing else but stand in awe, just like I did fifty-two years ago when I first heard this song. Greetings and well-wishes from Belgium.
Many bands in the late sixties, seventies and into the eighties that played live, always strived to sound better than their studio cuts, it was a challenging and competitive time for live performances, fans wanted and expected, better than the album, and in those days,. "They got it."
This was a protest song about the Vietnam war a real masterpiece. Ian Gillan is amazing and everyone of these muso’s are craftsmen on their instruments for something less serious try Space trukin’ or Hiway star! love Deep purple! So many were killed or came home and committed suicide from PTSD love you reaction guys
First discovered this DP video in 2009 (when I was in my mid-thirties) and became an instant Purple fan to this day. Blackmore's solo here and especially in the studio version taught me to really listen to guitars..life-changing..good reaction, guys
Your comment wasn't stupid... I seen them live at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. I was 100 ft away during this song. I had a tear in my eye when it ended. Amazing Band... Amazing Song...
I think you mirrored everyone who see's this reaction - it's almost spiritual and moving. The setting, the vocals, the legendary keyboard, drums, guitar - all of them the finest in the world at their craft to create this monster of a masterpiece.
The fav. song of my mum! ♥ She saw DP live back then ... We played that song on her 66th birthday! :-) *god_bless_her My mum was and still is a huge insperation for me! :-) love her! ♥
Yes you're right they are much better live the energy and there raw talent really comes out I can still remember seeing these guys many times no two shows were the same
Hei Bro's thought you might like to know, that the prime reason why Deep Purple Mk1 and MK2 were so focused, was the fact they never played under the influence of hard drugs, cocaine heroin LSD or even marijuana, they were happy with cigarettes beer n whisky mainly after work, only Lord, Blackmore, Paice, Gillan n Glover, stayed that way all through the years, even after the band reformed.🌴🇫🇯🌹🇦🇺😎👍
So- I just left a comment on your last video explaining how I found your channel. I can’t believe my eyes now that I rolled down to your beginnings. Child in time is my favourite song and I actually like this particular version much more than the others- I already put this through as a request to a reactor. I totally enjoyed your reaction!
my favorite rock "ballad" of all time. for me personally, it´s even more interesting than stairway to heaven. from 1983 to 1994, i was DJ in a hardrock-bar. i had to play this song at least 2 times a night, so i literally have heard it thousands of times. the best version - for me - is the live version on their sensational live double album MADE IN JAPAN.
You can’t even imagine what these concerts were like live! I’m so glad I was born early enough to spend my teens and 20’s experiencing music like this ☮️♥️😎
For you, people from the US, thinking that you are the greatest in the world, have you ever thought that most of the best bands from the 60th, 70th, 80th comes from UK?
Great two selections to start, "Money" by Floyd and now this classic. Ian Gillan (the singer) was the original Jesus in the Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera album. This is an anti-war song from 1970, and being a British band it was more about the Cold War than Vietnam.
It wasn't me bu uut... When I started to 'like' 'subscribe' & 'comment' (which wasn't all that long ago & which was purely my excited response to these reaction-type videos) I was very nervous, unsure, and all thumbs - fat ones, lol Thinking about it now I am pretty sure I may have 'disliked' by mistake, thinking I was 'replying' 😖 I still do it, but I correct myself straight away, Earlier on I simply wldn't have realised my error. So unless someone actually leaves a comment to explain their 'dislike' I wouldn't necessarily think it was intended or well thought out. Now a dozen or so and you'd be entitled to an explanation 😄✔ So I'm 63 and for a long while I didn't expect to engage much with technology if I could help it - turns out I can't help it, lol So I'm guessing I'm not the only technophobic hermit, cave dweller, hillbilly mountain man/woman who is coming to life again with these amazing windows into our past. And we DO have to get our spectacles or take our chances fat-thumbng 'in the dark' so to speak (and sometimes quite literally) with all the mistakes that entails. Actually I'm very surprised I've been able to srick with it. So sorry to you (& everyone else) if some of us old rockers create a ruckuss "in your hedgerow", lol PEACE & love 😄❤💕👍👌

You guys are the best! Love your reactions! This is exactly how we felt hearing these songs for the first time. Amazed again, again & again. We took it for granted that this friendly competition between bands would continue forever. The bar is set so high that todays artists just said fuck it. Keep on rockin fellas! 🤘
The best version of this song is on their iconic, live double album, 'Made in Japan'. You should definitely check it out. It will blow your socks off! This version is good but the live, Made in Japan version is almost unbelievable, it's so good! :)
Blackmore never rehearsed solo's, every live solo is unique as he played what he felt with some common phrases and hand signals to let the rest of the band know where they were.
Yeah, great song, I love it so much. I recommend also cover version by symphonic metal band Liv Moon, amazing version, you should react this one. ;) Oh, and it's not keyboard, it's Hammond organ.
Ian Gillan, the lead singer, played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar on the original album. If you want to hear more of his amazing range, listen to the song Gethsemene from the version released on the 1971 album. Phenomenal.
Led Zeppelin had Stairway to Heaven after this (around 72 I think) as probably their most iconic song - Child in Time is DP’s most iconic in my book. Would love to see you guys reacting to Rainbow (formed by Blackmore after DP broke up) - check out Stargazer, it’s sequel Light in the Black, then Kill the King, Tarot Woman and Man on a silver Mountain. Probably the best heavy metal band ever. They had a lot of influence on Metallica. Another great band from that era is Supertramp song Bloody well Right.

Cold war or Nam-- you can really feel the gunfire, terror and mayhem on this one especially in that amazing RB guitar solo, and in those screams..
