You shouldn't appear approachable or easy to solicit for services. Tipping or throwing around money is a weak way to buy goodwill. Try associating with Colombians with education and coin. You will not see them shake hands with people on the street or buy them stuff. You want to blend in and act well settled in the country. You will see that street people can sense your confidence when you act like a local and wont harass you much. Need to keep the hustlers in their place.

I spent time walking all over Cartagena alone. A gringo. I loved it. Sure yea some the water was gross but I feel you exaggerated a little bit. I felt extremely safe. Yea people try to sell you things it's literally the most touristic place in the entire country obviously people are going to be trying to make a buck. Anyone reading this comment and considering traveling solo to Cartagena, learn a bit of Spanish. "No gracias" goes a long way. If you are concerned about these vendors... Don't stop.... No gracias, no gracias, no quiero, walk... I really thought Cartagena was incredibly safe for solo gringo considering what many people say I think it has to do with whatever experience you are looking for. Spent a week in Cartagena and I wasn’t a fan. It’s way too hot and the streets vendors are too annoying. I speak Spanish fluently and no matter how many times you tell them no they will follow you. Minute you get out of your hotel they are out there waiting to sell you something. Cholon was cool and the people are nice. Met some cool people and also had some fun. But I would rather be in Medellin

I never had any problems in Mexico. I look like him. OK 20 years ago. But I was in Quintana Roo, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoacan, DF and more. Walking also at night but allways ask first where not to go... ;-)
