I am really digging the math, and how you explain it. Both my wife and I are into math puzzles so this video kept me interested and not skipping ahead..... I just discovered your Iso-Path Videos..... you are an Evil Genius! LOL

built one of these a few years ago and used it to rebuild a vintage VW engine... supported the near 500 pound weight with no issue. gave the video another watch as i'm going to build two more. love this design.

Thanks, Pocket! I've made a few of these using your design; Three potting benches and an outfeed/assembly table. This design works great! Thanks again. I really like your videos. I'm never sure what to expect when I see a new one, but you always come through!

    • @pocket83

Wow, that's appreciated. Since you've made so many of these, remember that you can add diagonal strength to this design by adding panels/angles to the inside corners of the frame. On one of mine, I added some arches to make it more solid. Should've put that tip in the vid ;)

  • @danielhall3151

I made it. It’s easy to build and strong. Almost no waste. I’m using it as the strongest potting bench I’ve ever had. Thanks very much!

If I was a guy I'd be you. I approach my sewing studio the way you have this shop. All my tables and set ups can change or move and all used. My cutting table is an older gate leg table on bed risers. I'm getting into more 3D upcycle and kesringntonuse since shop tools at age 65 thanks to my great partner of 7 years. I want to make outside end tables for our retirement house. 3 buildings and 3 patios. We use them all as the hot sun moves on large lot. I came here via your humming bird feeder video. Inteaxh sewing locally in this small town. Teachers in my family. You seem like a teacher. You could definitely narrate a science show or replace all those robo voices on videos!

This is a very good design for a work bench base. I used one like this -- with L-section rather than T-section legs for over 15 years. The base was rock- solid. Originally, I used three layers of 3/4" MDF for the top, with oak face boards.
I recycled this bench by replacing the top with face-laminated 2x4s and gave the bench to a young man who needed one for his garage. That 3" laminated top made a big difference in the heft and utility of the bench. Wish I had done that years ago.
    Great build!

It was really nice to see you branch out into the realm of computer modeling. The integration of the models into the video was really well done especially with the animation.

Thanks, Pocket. You took all of the thinking out of building a new workbench, and killed all of the excuses I had for not making one. Made one this weekend in just a few hours. Went with two layers of particle board for the top, because I'm cheap. It seems plenty stable enough for my uses. Thanks again for the plans and build video.

    A) I’ve been kicking tires on different workbench designs for a while and this is one of my favourites. I’ve already bought 4x4 for my legs so I am
Committed to half-lap joints... otherwise I’d have followed this design.
    B) Golden Ration. 42. You dork 😀
    C) I *love* that you take the time to explain the details (the poly, the fastener arrangement, the nail-on-nail setting).
I hit ‘subscribe’ so damn hard.

I'm redesigning my workbench+tablesaw+routertable, and my design uses similar construction to what you have here. I'm also trying to do it as cheaply as possible, using 2x4 extras from various construction sites in my neighborhood. Should be fun.

Yes, to your creativity, but it’s an uncommon trait. Two traits I like to use are brainstorming & a proverb (mine, I think)… “thanks for showing me what not to do”. Really enjoy your channel & no, I haven’t been able to invoke my proverb to any of your videos, yet! 🤞👊

Hey Pocket. Enjoyed watching this, especially the bonus little tips, like the tablesaw supports, "nail head nail set tool"tip, and nail / screw strength comparisons. Effective benches without complicated joinery :)
I actually really like the model making vs CAD. I have been making wood models lately on my CNC build, feeling a bit silly, as the CNC machine will be all about CAD. I think they can go together though, and it helps to limit screen time...
    Thanks for sharing. Peace, Bongo.

I'm not sure if you read comments or take suggestions. But I was binging your videos and was super inspired by a specific shot in your octohedron video. I want to do this myself but cannot afford the resin and stuff. So, you make the hedron, you make the top separately and cast the top in silicon then make a resin pour with little fish and stuff suspended in it. I think that would be neat... Like a little desk aquarium that you never need to feed.

Oh my god.. This is perfect... I'll have the top as a plywood with a hole that will sit snuggly right under the my cheap af tablesaw top layer. I'll add panels around, making it a relatively closed box with a hole for the shopvac. I might be able to reduce the amount of dust I send in the wind next time I have to make a bunch of cuts.
And it I need, it only cost 2 2x4 to replace the top frame.
    This is perfect!

@6:55 I spent a good half hour trying to figure out how you were going to get three 17-5/8" x 39" pieces after cutting two 30" x 48" workbench tops from a 48" x 96" piece of particle board because after accounting for the 1/8" kerf you'd be left with a 48" by 35-3/4" piece but I finally figured it out. Your secret is safe with me.

Hey pocket83, I have come to love your channel for quite some time now. When I saw this video six months ago I knew that I wanted to build a workbench just like the one you made. I tried your wooden knot project and completely ruined a chunk of Purple Heart, but when I saw the simplicity of this design I knew it was something for me. This project was the first time I was able to get some experience using my father’s power tools. Here is what it looked like in the end imgur.com/gallery/D1YO26I . I just want to say keep up the great work that you do on both of your channels and thank you for making mathematical concepts easy to understand in woodworking applications.

Gotta plug Polycrylic, which has lower VOC to breathe, and also gets hard as a rock when it sets up. I used it on my kitchen cabinet shelves which take a beating from dishes and not a mark...
You didn't mention ventilation, and in those cases where I did use Polyurethane, I found using a plywood cutting table with wheels on one end let me lift the other, roll it out into the driveway, and apply Polyurethane out in the fresh calm air, then roll it back into the garage to dry when I'm nowhere around...
