To be fair, the relationship between Newt and Anathema was exactly as rushed and ass-backwards in the source material. It's a whole thing about Anathema defining all of her life and choices by the prophecies and following them to a T without having her own agency because that's what she was taught her entire life. Prophecy says you bone this guy = you bone this guy, no questions asked. Her character development is centered around overcoming that shit.

What bothers me the most is when people are angry about these kinds of things happening, then instead of ranting to the writers, they'll take it out on the characters. Like, 'oh Anathema is great and then there's... some dude.' You can't really blame Newt for this, he's only doing what's been written for him. He's a normal guy and he helped save the world, cut him some slack 😂

Basically, the situation with conquest is that over time stories and myths change and the same goes for this. Over the centuries Conquest was replaced by Pestilence and in the story of Good Omens Pestilence has been replaced by pollution.

A related explanation: the bible is very badly translated.
You know those videos where you take a song and put it through google translate six times and then sing the result? That is the historic process that the english translation of the bible has gone through, but with the translations done by hand over centuries.
As such, there are a LOT of different translations of the horsemen based on different translations of the bible from various sources.
See also: the word for "young woman" translated into "maiden" is the origin of "Immaculate Conception" - older versions of the bible say nothing about her being a virgin, just a young woman. A mistranslation created that entire concept whole cloth.

Rationale for the straight sex scene: Newt was too freaked out in the moment to ASK Anathema how many nipples she has, so he just settled for checking for himself.

  • @SatChiibz

I'm pretty sure Newt/Anathema is actually poking fun/parodying EXACTLY the fact that a man and woman HAVE to get together in like Every Show To Exist Ever. It's done via prophesy that they just blindly follow cuz, that's what you do. There's no real reason to it other than that (like the trope itself).
Also knowing Pratchett it seems exactly like the sort of thing he'd do to make fun of the trope.

At the time, it was a veiled reference to the AIDS epidemic, but it certainly is a bit of an evergreen, what with pandemics and the increasing ineffectiveness of antibiotics.

I hate it when shows try to force hetero romance just because they gotta have one, apparently. Even more painful when a character of the same gender is right there and has better chemistry with them. I just skip over that scene. Once was enough, thank you.

@@tonbokarasu2973 Well, he does want to talk directly to the Almighty (I'm not sure a face-to-face is the same as praying), but he was unable to do that, blocked by the Metatron. We don't see him by himself praying to God as we see Crowley in the scene in this episode. He may do this, but we aren't shown it.
Aziraphale speaks with God directly about the sword that one time, but that wasn't praying either. This is nothing against Aziraphale; in his early angelhood, he may have conversed with God on a few occasions. When you're conversing with God like that, though, it isn't a prayer.

Personally, it fits my definition of prayer - directly addressing God, with the faith that They will answer if it's appropriate.

I'm with you on the heteronormativity stuff, but bear in mind that Season 1 is being faithful to a book that was written in the 1990s by two cishet guys who had ideas about toxic stereotypes of masculinity being overcome/healed/etc. by the power of positive stereotypes of femininity. Not saying they are or were right, but that's a factor in why the characters and their interactions are depicted that way in the show.

I think the point of the straight relationships in this show are two fold. One I think it's making fun of the fact there are always "those" bullshit relationships, by making their core premise outrageously stupid "oh a prophecy said you were going tonbone so just do it".
I also think it's important to have both queer and straight relationships in tandem with eachother otherwise we risk falling into patterns of excluding one way or the other.
I know there's a lot of arguments about our own types of relationships being excluded for a long time so it's our time now. But I personally like having both next eachother presented in a way that doesn't take away from one another.

About the Four Horsemen, the thing about the Bible is that a lot of stuff in there are metaphores or very poetic and artistic description of what happens and their meaning, often relying on the context of Hellenistic/pre-Hellenistic Mediterranean/Babylonian culture adjacent to the Holy Lands.
The Horsemen in the Bible are breafily descripted in John's Apocalypse as entities that broke free from the first four (out of seven) seals that mark the start of the Apocalypse and they are also often associated with Greek gods (typical christian/abrahamic habit of incorporating pagan deities as demons/angels/entities): the Red and Black Horsemen are pretty straightforward, War (Ares) and Famine (Limos), and the Pale/Green Horsemen is a bit weird, it's definetly Death (Thanathos) but is also described as arbringer of Pestilence, because the White Horsemen is truely a symbology fuck fiesta: it's the first of the seals open and given the symbols he carry (bow and crown) is either saw as Jesus himself, conqueror of evil and hierald of the rapture, or the Antichrist as first of evil that will destroy the world and leader of the other Horsemen before, but many of those interpretations are very late, often up to XVIII or XIX century and in pop culture the White Horsemen stucked with the Pestilence angle... that said, I absolutely love Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett idea that Pestilence just gave up and passed it to Pollution, it's just so apropo with the idea of Heaven and Hell moving along human society.
Sidenote: friendly reminder that the source material is still a 90s' book, of course it will have the mandatory straight couple in it, but at the same time I'm a sucker for "shy, awkward, nerdy person X confident, decise, (sort of) goth person" so everything is good in the universe.
Fake or not spoiler: Adam will save the world when finally he'll meet God herself and she will mumble for hours about how cool whales are and wonders if he can make whales too.

The only one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse specifically named in the Bible is Death. Revelation 6:8 "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him."
The titles of the others are just inferred by their symbolism. So, the other Horsemen have been guessed to be anything from Pestilence, Conquest, Strife, War, Famine, or even the Antichrist himself.

@@itsreeeshaaa7560Yes, Death on the pale horse (though the word used could apparently also be translated as a sickly green-yellow colour) is the only one named in the book of revelations.
The personification of the others was originally derived from the items they were given. Conquest having a crown and riding a white horse. Famine having a pair of scales to weigh grain and riding a black horse. War having a sword and riding a red horse.
Conquest and War were distinguished as being two different types of war ie war of conquest and civil war. However people seemed to be confused by this and over time Conquest was replaced by Pestilence (though precisely why I'm not sure as on the face of it there doesn't seem to be much of a connection between pestilence and a crown).

Basically about the 4 horsemen, they were (both in fiction and real life) defined by- and embody the 4 primary causes of death, which used to be War (conflicts), Famine (starvation), Conquest (ambition/ego) and Death(natural) but as time passes and culture and technology changes, the causes that are "biggest" change with the era.
Conquest used to be one of the primary causes, and so was one of the horsemen, but then pestilence and plagues happened in Europe and became a greater and more renown killer than conquests, incidentally also reducing the prevalence of conquest since no one really goes out to fight while everyone's dying of disease, and so Pestilence replaced Conquest.
In the exact same way, vaccines and medicinal advances has rendered great plagues and pandemics a thing of the past (at the time of Good Omens) while human pollution has surged out of control, ergo Pollution replaced Pestilence. (There's a funny fan theory that COVID, not existing until after Good Omens has taken place, is Pestilence stepping up their game again.)

5:56 Ok, the whole horseman question! So, the only named horseman is apparently Death, the others are implied. So, the interpretations are sometimes different.
We have rider of the white horse, the rider of the red horse (War/Mass Slaughter/Civil War), the rider of the black horse (Famine) and Death who ride on a pale horse.
The rider who is central to this debate is the rider of the white horse, who has a bow and a crown. This rider has been thought to be the personification of Conquest and Glory, Christ, the Gospel or the Holy Spirit, the Antichrist, War of Conquest (because the red horse rider is seen as civil war) and Infectious disease or Pestilence/ Plague.
19:26 Just hold out until Mrs. Davies is introduced. She is a lovely Welsh woman who works at Tesco, Madame Tracey meets her when Shadwell says something...well really mean, and she goes out shopping for dinner. She is nice, but with a hidden streak of mischief and wicked humor and is just delightful. There more same sex couples in season 2. We get lesbians.
In fairness to the Newt and Anathema thing, it’s a prophesy in the book and Anathema always tries to do what Agnes predicted. Anathema thinks the world is going to end if she doesn’t do what she’s told and it might end even if she does do everything right. She’s very stressed and sex can be a stress relief, it doesn’t necessarily have to be anything more than that. It’s a ‘fuck you’ to Newt’s ancestor who would hate this even more than you do.
I love how Aziraphale realised what had happened, had a moment to think about it and was like ‘I think this situation can only be summed up by one word. Time for my very first swear word!’ “FUCK!”
Fack spoiler! Season 2 is all about the different pantheons of Gods and how they all exist too. The different pantheons have been arguing about which of them is best and Zuze suggests they hold an Olympic Games to settle things. Heaven and Hell have to work together to participate as one team.

The whole leprechaun moment Crowley has in S2 was a big hint, if you haven't read AG. :)

I disagree that the person who called you out - on saying we get lesbians - was right to do so.
I’d love more bi and pan representation (I’m pan) and potentially, yes, they could be bi or pan. However, so far, they’ve exclusively been shown being attracted to women. They saw a naked man and found it funny.
Can you headcanon them as bi or pan? Yes. Could they be revealed to be bi or pan in season three? Yes. However, saying a fictional character is a lesbian because - so far - she’s exclusively been shown being attracted to women, does not need calling out. It’s a quick way of saying we get more LGBT+ rep next season without going into too much detail or into hypotheticals about who else she might find attractive. Plus, they are characters, not real people.
If I’d said; ‘in season 2 we get a character called Maggie who has blue eyes,’ in theory I could be wrong. DO we literally get a blue-eyed character called Maggie, or is she potentially wearing coloured contact lenses?
Anyway, nice theory about the American Gods crossover! I personally thought the leprechaun scene was setting up a crossover with The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Four-Leaf Clover holiday door.

I kind of like that it’s ambiguous, but maybe I’m overly eager for very broad representation. I strongly disagree that finding a naked man funny proves anything, though. Of course one’s ability to be sexually or romantically attracted to a gender doesn’t mean you’re always attracted to everyone of that gender in all circumstances. But my version would encompass the entire world, and most importantly, it would be *retroactive.* I'd give everyone a day or two so they can get their affairs in order, and then they'd suffer everything they've ever inflictied on anyone else, in order, and it wouldn't be fatal until they've finished the experience.

It was just as ill-fitting in the book to be fair, and I suppose if your life has been run by prophecy, and the prophecy says "you're gonna kiss the guy" you probably would just go with it at that point. But yes, down with the heteronormative bullshit, my queer ass just wants to watch the sunshine one and the grumpy one have a nice picnic and be ridiculous at eachother for a whole episode.
The thing about Agnes' prophecies was that they were all very specific, more like random snapshots of the future with no context, and also written down in no particular order, so most of them are next to useless until after they happen.
They chose one of the few examples with an actual date in it (about the apple) in a previous episode, and I think that might have been a mistake, because it gave the impression that they were all dated, but they're jumbled. This family has spent hundreds of years trying to piece them together, usually in hindsight by going "OHHHH, so THAT'S what this one meant!" I can only imagine the pinboards with red string that must have gone up at family gatherings.
On the other side of that, times like this tornado tend to conveniently put the correct prophecy in arm's reach, because ...Agnes saw that it would, and wrote it down. One of those frustrating timey-wimey + prophecy narrative things.
Aziraphale is SO adorable, he must be protected at all costs, and Crowley is doing his best :p

There's less sexual/romantic tension between the leads than there is in most adaptations where they *are* the same gender even, and I found it really nice, because I also get very annoyed when shows force het pairings to happen constantly or with no reason.

    2) Crowley suggested he should kill the kid, which Azi doesn't want! He still hopes the child to be good and worthy of living his life. Killing goes against all his morales
I do think Azi trusts Crowley, but its like your partner suggesting something immoral and you want to try other options frist (without them interfearing).

Your annoyance with the straight couples this episode was so relatable. I used to like the witch but after that scene I honestly stopped caring bc it just didnt make sense in these circumstances and irritated me so much.
The rest of the episode was great tho. And I enjoyed your reaction a lot 💙

Pestilence is one of the 4 Horsemen. I remember it from reading Shanara back in early 2000s when Walker Boh had to fight amalgamations of the 4 of them.

About the names, I've read a few books where they used rider/horse for the 4. War rode a horse named Conquest, for example. IDK

Not to give too much away, just… brace yourself when you see the ducks heading into Crowley’s flat. Those poor plants had been through enough as it was! That’s all I’m going to say. Except have tissues at the ready. Crowley’s FACE…. Ugh!

Revelation chapter 6 describes the Four Horsemen as follows:
    (1) A rider on a white horse, has a bow, given a crown, who goes forth "conquering and to conquer".
    (2) A rider on a red horse, given a sword, who has the power to take peace from the earth.
    (3) A rider on a black horse, given a set of scales, who sets exorbitant prices for staple foods.
    (4) A rider on a green horse, told "Come and see," whose name is Death "and Hell followed after".
_Traditionally,_ these are interpreted respectively as "Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death"; note that Death is the only one actually given a name in the text. (Also, most translations give the colour of Death's horse as "pale", but only because everyone knows there's no such thing as a green horse.)
But that tradition starts from the premise that Revelation is a real divine prophecy of the end of the world. Modern scholarship reads it instead as a polemic against the Roman Empire, written using prophetic imagery from the Hebrew Bible to camouflage its rebellious intentions.
In this interpretation the Four Horsemen are aspects of the Roman war machine. The Red Horseman is war itself, the Black Horseman is the food shortages that follow when war has killed farmers and burnt crops, and Death is of course named as Death in the text, so those three are pretty much correctly identified in the traditional reading.
But _white_ horses represent glory and righteous causes -- another one appears later in the book with unambiguously good symbolism -- and you'll notice the White Horseman is given a _bow,_ a weapon that kills at a distance. So the idea is that the traditional reading has got this one wrong; the White Horseman is war seen from the perspective of the warmongers, who gain glory and prestige while causing other people to die.
So although _traditionally_ the White Horseman is Pestilence, nowadays in accordance with the scholarship people are calling him Conquest instead.

I was going to say something about something but the more I thought about it the more I wondered how far it went on the 'spoiler' spectrum, so I decided to not chance it and simply say that I can't wait for you to watch Season 2.
There's probably a dragon. ... is there a dragon? I forget. ... I'm bad at fake spoilers. Sorry.

There is a HINT of a dragon for S3, but no one's confirmed it yet. Fingers crossed!!!

I think I'd place Aziraphale as a fluffy cat and Crowley as the retriever -- or maybe an Irish setter.

Crowley's a snake and Aziraphale is the fluffy duck he just cannot resist and wants to snuggle for warmth.

I'm straight and I am there with you on being sick of the constant "oh will they get together" BS. One of my favorite male/female friendships that STAYS a friendship without any of the usual annoying ship teasing is the Doctor and Donna in Doctor Who. (That's David Tennant's Doctor, btw, and Catherine Tate). Well, they did have one kiss, but that was literally to save his life from cyanide poisoning (he needed a shock to cure him) (if you know Doctor Who, that kind of thing is perfectly plausible on that show, LOL) and they just moved on and never mentioned it again. Now that's how you do it right.

Just for the new viewers here, the following is an example of a *fake* spoiler, which is something we _love_ to do here:
Dang, it was honestly insane in season 2 _after_ Adam's friends basically replace the horsemen. Like, Pepper...? Damn. And Wensleydale? He had an _excellent_ character arc. But my favorite bit was defs when we find out that Anathema and Newt have broken up because she realizes she's into girls, and she's tired of following the path the prophecies put her on. Poor Newt, though. I hope he finds someone in season 3.
