How I made a climbing film 🧗🏽‍♀️

  • Just to reiterate, this isn't me trying to tell you how to make a climbing film (as I'm sure there are SO MANY ways to do it!), it's more of an inside look of what I found works for my specific situation as a climber-UA-camr. I'm kinda stumbling and bumbling forward in this UA-cam space and enjoying the creativity of filmmaking and all the new opportunities I have!! I never would have thought I'd be producing and directing AND climbing in adventure films... what is even happening hahaha.
    I asked the internet if a behind the scenes video would even be interesting (in my head I'm like, okay I'm about to NERD OUT here) and a lot of people seemed at least slightly interested.... GOOD ENOUGH for me! lol. Enjoy!

    The thing that got me watching your videos was that you always show your emotions. In the first video I watched you cried after sending a climb because it was so scary and I love that you share that side of climbing (and of yourself). Keep up the good work!

    It obvious from your films, which are outstanding, that you are as passionate about your film making as you are about your climbing. But hearing you talk about the process brings that passion out even more. Thank you Anna, for all that you create, from the silly to the sublime. It's an amazing gift to all of us. And your mobile created a funny effect in the top left corner. :D

    This is the kind of stuff that belongs in Reel Rock! It's so important to show the personal growth and emotional aspects of climbing. You're a wonderful storyteller, and even more impressive that you do most of it yourself. It sounds like climbing has been an avenue for huge personal growth for you, and it's very cool to be brought along on your journey. Thank you for sharing

    Anna, my husband and I have been watching your channel for a while now, and we were super blown away by both your short films. It's incredible to see you growing in all aspects of your life; climbing, videography, editing, even just you as a person showing moments of reflection and growth. You're knocking it out of the park.

    Really fascinating! I loved watching the film, but when I watch films like this I tend to imagine that they "just happen". I'm aware that there must be someone there with a camera, maybe climbing above, but the complexity of setting up these shots is an eye-opener. I'm not surprised you got emotional! It must be like a birth process.

    I always say how I love your vlogs and your fun humour and honesty. Oops I did it again. 😊 As the guy who watches all the dvd / blu ray extras to every movie I buy, this vlog was really up my street. Film making is so cool and I totally related to what you were saying about getting really excited about creating art that you can share with people and get positive interesting feedback about. Cliche time:- fail to plan = plan to fail. All that time thinking up questions, storyboarding, (adding a dog for a million extra views 😅) is never wasted. You made a movie! How cool is that!?! Nice one Anna 😊

    The animations in the las locas video looked amazing, I thought you had an editor do it! I would actually love to know how you get money to finance all that you do. What kind of side jobs do you take on?
    I love your content btw, been bouldering for four months and thanks to you and other creators I'm already able to take on fairly hard problems (and stay motivated to try problems I think I can't solve more often). Your Videos are incredibly inspiring and well made and it always makes my day when I see a new upload from you. Thank you so much for being so vulnerable and open in front of the camera ❤️

      Thank you!! It depends! I’ve taken a lot of outside editing jobs. I used to edit videos for a different YT channel as well. This added up to a pretty good side gig I could do on the move. More recently I’ve started selling stickers/ merch, I’m on Patreon, I do random modeling gigs and freelance articles, I sell foot pics lol, basically whatever I can possibly do to let me climb and create more. I’m hoping sponsors keep raising my salary as I get better at what I do, but it’s not easy being “just” a climber.

    Don't know why it took me so long to get here... (It might have been because I was overwhelmed by my basement flooding.) Anyway, I got back into rock climbing because I wanted to up my game in climbing photography. I've made some progress on both, but I also had over a decade of fairly rigorous (and unforgiving) rope work experience from Caving to build on top of. (Think climbers are paranoid about ropes...you've not yet met a caver. We take paranoia to new depths...literally.)
    I deeply appreciate this BTS as relatively few of us are truly aware of the effort put into making these things. The honesty is welcome, and perhaps it will open the door for others in the future.

    One thing you might consider re: the budget/money side of things - you mentioned "losing money" on a project. It might be worthwhile to consider the flip side that you're investing money in yourself. Building a career in just about anything requires a pretty serious investment of time and money, which you've clearly been doing - and it looks to be slowly paying off. Just my .02 on being a bit more forgiving of yourself and reframing the situation.

    • @AnnaHazelnutt
      @AnnaHazelnutt  9 місяців тому +1

      @@franCiska8799 Absolutely! I can tell you what I personally use for my general UA-cam videos: I have a Lumix GH5 mark II (THE UA-camr's video camera haha) with a two channel lapel mic system. I also have a shotgun mic in case that's better, but I like the mic system because it's more intimate. I don't personally have a drone but I always hire people with them-- I really recommend drones for adding that extra element to videos, just be careful with permits/ wildlife and make sure you can fly it where you're filming. My videographers usually have a nicer camera bc they're in the industry, and for bouldering, I'd recommend a gimbal for a smoother look. I don't always have access to this but it's nice when I do. Additionally, I use my iphone for days when I don't have videographers but something happens and I want to capture the moment. You'll see I mix phone footy into most outdoor project videos to add depth to the story bc I can't afford/ it would be A LOT having a videographer around all the time!
