    3:58 I've heard it argued elsewhere on the internet that Mewtwo's low weight in Smash is a reference to how in his home series despite being a powerhouse Legendary Pokémon his Defense stat is noticeably lower than his Legendary peers. For anyone not familiar Pokémon's Defense stat is the stat that determines how much less than full damage it should take specifically from moves that make physical contact so it correlates to Smash's weight stat as that determines how easily it is launched aka it's survivability from attack. Do I personally believe this? Eh. I think it's an interesting take though.

    I'd love to see Wadi (or anyone really) take Mewtwo and shake the competitive scene by committing fully to the character, like Skyjay with Incin or Peanut with Little Mac. I know it would mean limiting one's success, but everybody loves a low tier hero in this game.
    Edit: I forgot to mention, I also think Mewtwo is genuinely one of the coolest characters in the game. He has a very simple, yet clean visual design, and everything he does looks stylish, making him a really fun character to watch in bracket.

    The fact that this character is played so little comes from the fact that he's not intuitive imo. When as a newcomer you pick up a character, you expect them to behave in a certain way, which is not the case with his super floatiness, weird double jump, weird hurtbox and hitboxes. So this is the kind of character where you actually need to already have some knowledge of the game to minimize his weaknesses and abuse his strengths.

    They never should’ve changed Mewtwo from 4. The mechanics changes were enough. Minus his stupid airdodge, Smash 4 Mewtwo was a perfect mix of risk versus reward. It honestly feels like they looked at the Smash 4 tier list, threw their hands up, and said “oH hE’s OnlY nINE sPoTs AwAy fRoM BAyOneTtA. hE MuSt Be brOKeN.” And then nerfed him for no good reason.

    I feel like Mewtwo getting a more substantial weight buff would be amazing for it. Sure, it would make it easier to combo, but its floatiness would help to offset that a bit, and it really would help Mewtwo go the distance in a multitude of other scenarios. Doesn’t even need to be a heavyweight. A mid-weight like Wadi brought up would be perfect (90 units would even match Mewtwo’s defense and special defense stats in the pokemon games)

    Not that I'm a good player, so grain of salt, but in playing Mewtwo, I feel like it he was just a little shorter and a little heavier, he'd become a much more attractive pick. But the combo of large hurt box and super light just damns him. Seph too, regardless of their other strengths.

    • @hangry3102
      @hangry3102 Рік тому +2

      That's why I main Yoshi along side Mewtwo. He has a lot of Mewtwo's strengths, such as floaty, high offense, fast air mobility, + the things that Mewtwo needs, a smaller hitbox, and heavier weight. Yoshi you can get away with a lot of stuff because of his air speed and tiny hitbox + his weight, and you can more often turn your brain off. But he struggles against anyone that outranges him. That's where Mewtwo is my pick because of his long range tail, shadow balls and reflect. Both of the characters basic mechanics feel the same, but they're also kind of opposites.

      All Mewtwo needs to be treated as a good character is a heavier weight (which would be more accurate anyways) and invulnerability on his tail hitbox during hit tail attacks. Some characters get invincibility on certain hitboxes during specific attacks, like Mario (his head has invulnerability during Up Smash). If Mewtwo had that he would be really good. I don't even think he needs to be shorter as he's a fairly tall Pokemon anyway.
      But I guess the design philosophy is that he can't be strong, fast, AND not be lightweight... :/

  • @XC11301991
    @XC11301991 Рік тому +35

    • @Contrary22
      @Contrary22 Рік тому +9

      It's weight or the height. If he was smaller and this light he'd be better, because he'd be harder to hit. Or heavier for longevity. Mewtwo, Sephiroth and Ridley all got shafted in this aspect. It's the big body and light weight over the tail hurtbox.

    I think people consider Mewtwo hard to learn/play, because they have it in their mind that he's a camping character. Oh shadow ball is a core move, so I should play him passively.
    But I feel like he's closer to a rush down character honestly. With his shadow ball still being a massive threat from anywhere on the stage (or off for that matter).

    • @straightnochase8078

    • @lasercraft32
      @lasercraft32 Рік тому +1

      Exactly. I never play Mewtwo as a zoner or camper, he does really well as a rush down. His big hitboxes and light weight makes it so the best option is to go on the offensive, and he has the speed and power to make it work. Shadow Ball is just an added benefit to make him more dangerous from a distance, and to bait the opponent into coming closer.

    I know tunnel visioning is bad for character when you think of their weaknesses compared to their strengths but i feel like in mewtwo and sephiroth's case there is a point to be made that being big and light does not benefit a character as much as the game devs think it is. In seph's case in most matchups there is no way for him to get one wing when he is combo food and can die extremely early and the same goes for mewtwo who is meant to be this well balanced all around glass cannon of a character when he doesnt get a chance most of the time to push his crazy power and explode. Gonna preface this by saying I love Wadi's Mewtwo; he brings a good amount of style and fundies to the character. But I think he's honestly accurately rated.
    I think one trend we're seeing in the meta is that consistency matters a lot. And unfortunately, hurtboxes matter a lot too (Joker, Pikachu). Mewtwo's size/hurtbox and his relatively low weight just make the margin for error that much slimmer. So many characters have such damaging advantage states and player execution is only getting better.
    I didn't play Smash 4, but I can only imagine if Mewtwo had been dlc in this game (invulnerability on his tail no doubt)

    Similar for side b, I think side b is useful for stalling in air for landing mixup/edgeguarding and reflecting projectiles, but I don't really understand why Mewtwo players sometimes run up and side b. If they're gonna read the opponent's shield isn't it just better to grab?

    Literally only a minute in so far, so maybe you'll address this, but there's 2 instances where the tail hurt box is simply BS.
    1 is when you run in and out to try and bait an attack, but he sticks his tail so far behind him that you get caught anyway. I think the only other character that might have to deal with that is Charizard. But he's way heavier so it isn't as detrimental.
    And 2 is you can't reliably use it as a way to get back into stage. Using a back air or up air on people who are trying to 2 frame is super useful. But there's been countless times where I got spiked because they hit the tail instead. Whereas, if I was a sword user, that wouldn't have been an issue at all. At worst, the attacks would have just stopped each other.
    If Mewtwo wasn't a big hitbox in general and one of the lightest characters in the game, then the tail wouldn't be as big an issue. But all 3 of these combined can result in some really BS feeling deaths

    I don't think at all that M2 is an easy character to learn. M2 on an advanced level has so many unique and, when mastered, overpowered options, techs, movements and combos. And the fact that most M2 players sadly don't utilize M2's "full potential" proves that point. Because whenever I watch even high level M2 players, they often specialize only in a specific strength of M2, leaving some of M2's other strengths underdeveloped. You, WaDi, for example (and I say this respectfully) mastered neutral, ledge-trapping and fundamentals, but your combo game, techs and movements could still improve quite a bit. ofc I'm not saying you're bad in those areas, pls don't get that wrong lul, in fact you already have improved in those areas tremendously over the last couple years, but I think there's still more room for optimization.
    And the same is true for other high level M2 players, not gonna drop any names, but I know M2 players who have mastered M2's unique movements, but their punish-game and combos are sometimes lacking. Or M2 players, among whom I'd perhaps categorize myself, who use the more advanced techs and combos, but lack the high level neutral, fundies and patience like your M2.
    I'm not saying M2 is the hardest character or anything, but, considering M2 vastly underutilized potential, I definitely think M2 is more on the harder side rather than the easy side.

  • @innocentshine2778
    @innocentshine2778 Рік тому +1

    I don't think he's underrated or overrated, most people put him in upper mid tier and I think that's where he belongs. His only high level results are just Wadi being godlike, and even that has shown its limits since we've seen more ROB usage (and other random characters) as time went on.
    I wouldn't say Mewtwo's really hard to play either, his basic gameplan is easy to apply, but I also think he requires you to play better and smarter than most characters in this game... But even by doing that you aren't rewarded a lot, you just get a chance to win against people that are mashing their broken tools until it works.
    However I disagree that all he needs is good players picking him up, every top Mewtwo's from smash 4 have tried him and all of them (except Wadi) ended up dropping him, probably because he's not good enough/inconsistent/frustrating or unrewarding to play. Even Leo played him that one time, won against Tweek then never used him again. Oryon did decent results in France with the character for a little bit, just to drop him and play freakin Doc instead.
    Also there's a weakness that is very rarely mentioned but is imo a pretty annoying one, and it's his lack of good anti air tools, Dabuz explained that pretty well in one of his videos. If you compare him with Samus, both can condition jumps pretty well with their projectile, but Samus is very good at covering them, while for Mewtwo it's more of a commitment, and he doesn't have a great oos option either so it can be annoying to deal with good aerial approaches.

    • @trevorhannan6428

      I will never not get sick of people comparing mewtwo to samus. yes they both have charge shot and yes they both condition for jump. Those two things are true for both characters. The issue I have is that this is where the similarities end. If people want to pretend that this makes the characters the same thing and that since samus is better on a tier list that there is zero reason to play mewtwo be my guest, but they would be very wrong. Mewtwo has a ton of strengths that samus does not have. Mewtwo can edge guard VERY deep off stage and still recover before the opponent makes it back if you miss the edge guard due to his insane teleport. One could say well sure thats true but samus has one of the best ledge traps in the game so samus doesnt need to go off stage. Good point! unfortunately for those people they do not realize just how potent Mewtwo is at also ledge trapping. Unlike samus (not dark samus) shadow ball hits the ledge when spaced right and forces a quick option from ledge which can be easily punished by throwing shadow ball early to catch the option or by simply calling it out with some other option depending on what they choose. This means that mewtwo is very good at getting easy early kills by edge guarding and is really good at also keeping them offstage to try over and over again making Mewtwo overall better in this situation than samus is. lets not forget either that in neutral mewtwo has something he can do with shadow ball that samus does not have an option with charge shot, double jump cancels. Having a dj cancel allows M2 to fake an opponent into thinking m2 will go really high but instead of that M2 will actually just stay in the same place he was in and get to charge more sb. The list goes on and on from here and I dont have all day but my point is that the comparison between characters starts and ends with the fact they both have a charge shot.

      @@trevorhannan6428 Please make paragraphs bro I'm not gonna read all that... Anyways I never said Mewtwo was just the same as Samus, of course they don't have the exact same strengths and weaknesses (although Samus is definitely the better choice of the two)... But I stil think it's fair to compare them since they have a similar gameplan and rely a lot on their charge shot. Notice how I didn't use like, Wii Fit for the comparison because they don't play the same at all even though they have a charge shot, but Samus makes sense. And I did not compare every single one of their tools either, but just one thing that makes sense as well considering the gameplan they share.

    The reason why players don't use Mewtwo is because of his hurtboxes and weight. Mewtwo as the height of a heavyweight, but the weight of a small character. These two factors are very unfavorable to have, especially when considering his tail is also a hurtbox and doesn't have many disjointed hitboxes because of that. Compare that to another character with similar attributes, Sephiroth, who has a very thin hurtbox and has large, disjointed hitboxes thanks to his sword.
