Fly Tying a Foam Wing Caddis (Simple Flies Series)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 сер 2024
- The exact origin of this pattern isn't really known, but it's one of those that have probably been created by many tiers over the years. Fish this high floater wherever you find caddis flies-- and it's a great top fly on a dry/dropper rig.
Hook: #12-18 dry fly
Thread: Black or to match body
Body: Synthetic or natural dubbing
Wing: 2mm foam
Hackle: Brown or your choice

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.
Thanks Matt, good to have the shout out to Backwater Angler as well!
Hey thanks Neil! I take it you've shopped with Theaux and company before. Same here. If you haven't tried Great Feathers, that's where you can get your tying materials! Cheers. -Matt
Nice little floater that’ll definitely attract bites! Thx Matt. 🙂
Appreciate it Clyde. Might not be the fly of choice on your big waters, but if you've got any lake bluegill up there I'm sure they'll smash it too. :-)
DEAR MATT,,, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOUR CHANNEL FOR A WHILE NOW,, AND WANTED TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SAY “THANK YOU “ FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND PASSION YOU BRING TO THE FLY TYING COMMUNITY... DUE TO YOUR CREATIVITY AND STEP BY STEP DESIGNS,,, YOU BRING JOY TO THE SPORT. I REALIZE THAT THESE VIDEOS YOU MAKE,,, ARE NOT EASY TO DO,,,,, AND QUITE FRANKLY TIME CONSUMING,, BUT IF I MAY ON BEHALF OF THOUSANDS OF US, GUYS AND GALS, GIVE YAA A BIG THUMBS UP..👍. BE SAFE, STAY HEALTHY,, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIPS AND TRICKS,,, MY BEST,,,
Well said MR. EJ Mac Ewan: you spoke my heart, this is my favorite channel. Matt is a Great Person and a Great Friend.
Wow, EJ, I am very humbled by this complement. Thank you so much for watching and leaving this. It just made my day! And true, making videos is not always easy (I mess up plenty that you never see!), but I'm having fun doing it so in the end... if I can have fun and help other people at the same time, it's a win-win situation. Thanks again for the encouraging note. Cheers. -Matt
And Edward, you may be my favorite subscriber of all time! You've been a friend for many months now and I greatly appreciate your support. Have a great weekend. :-)
Learning time with coffee 👍
Thanks Jim; always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Good Morning Sir Matt, A simple good looking fly. i'll have to ty afew up for my box thank you Sir Matt. Have A Great Weekend Sir. P.S. the color possibilities are endless thanks to the foam.
Thanks Edward! I think the main reason for the foam is floatability and to make it more visible. My recommendation is to keep it a yellow (or maybe tan) wing, but vary the color of the body and hackle. I don't *think* the fish see too much of the wing, but it certainly helps me to see the fly. :-)
Nice looking caddis pattern Matt! Like it with the foam.thank you for posting video.
You got it Mike; thanks for watching my friend!
Little River Outfitters in Townsend, TN tout this NEVERSINK CADDIS pattern as their #1 selling dry fly. I spend April and May fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and if I have 1, I have 100 in yellow. Outstanding pattern to put up at this time of year Matt. BRAVO ZULU !
Thank you Arthur! I have heard of it called a Neversink Caddis. I think Mak ties a couple called that. His are a bit more elaborate but he definitely makes some beautiful flies. :-)
Nicely done Matt and a quick tie. Thanks for sharing
You bet Layton, and Saturday's is even quicker! Thanks for watching. :-)
good stuff Thanks Matt!!
Thanks James! Appreciate it my friend. :-)
Nice one matt think ill tie a few in black to match the little black caddis that hatch where i fish .👍
Great idea Hugh! Some of our waters down here have a little black caddis as well.
Nice fly, Matt.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching. :-)
Low floater is a good fly to have on the creeks. That yellow should be good for visibility too. Cheers
Yep, thanks Darren! Sometimes I've gone to this fly at dusk simply because I was having a hard time seeing my standard EHC. It might give you a few more minutes of visibility. :-)
Yep another fly even I can tie. I think maybe the notch in the wing is for the silhouette. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
Thanks Johnny! You're probably right with the notch in the wing, but honestly I'm not sure the fish see much of the wing. But oh well, it does make it kind of cooler looking. Albeit ever so slightly. :-)
@@SavageFlies I was thinking that the foam probably sits in the meniscus and would be visible, but I don't know.
@@johnnylightning1491 I think the wing does sit down in the surface film a little bit, with the hook point and body just under. But I do know that the fly is pretty visible from a good ways off so maybe the wing is a bit above the surface? I don't know either! I'll have to pay more attention the next time I fish it. :-)
Looks easy enough for a guy like me! Gonna spin up a couple and see how they come out!
Sometimes the simple patterns do the trick. Stay tuned for Saturday's bug. It's even simpler. :-)
What a beauty!!!
Appreciate it Niwel! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Missed my morning coffee with you yesterday as I was on the road. Today is the catch up time. I picked up some of that 2mm foam to try some different foam flies. I’ll have to give this one a whirl when I get home. Mr MacEwn very eloquently stated what many of us feel who watch your videos regularly. I look forward to watching each of your videos. 👍. Have a great weekend Matt.
Thanks John; that means a lot to me. I appreciate all of you who do watch and leave these encouraging comments. It's what keeps me motivated when it's 11pm at night and I still haven't finished a video for the next morning. But I'm still having fun so there's that too. Have a great weekend!
I’ll never be on the water without one of these, we call them a never sink caddis. I’d love to see you tie a Madam X sometime if you are taking requests. Thanks for sharing sir!
Yep, I've seen some of these patterns called that too. I did tie a Madam X back in the fall so here you go: ua-cam.com/video/lnrH56Idbmc/v-deo.html And thanks for watching my friend!
@@SavageFlies I can’t believe I missed that! Thanks sir!
@@flyrodhiker8326 Any time! And no sweat.. I have pumped out about 200+ videos this year so even I sometimes forget flies that I've tied here. :-)
I saw this in American Angler and tied some thinking they'd give me the same luck as Roman Moser's Balloon Caddis. That never really happened, but I found it to be a really good panfish fly.
Oh yeah Jim, I could see my local farm pond sunfish smashing this thing. Of course they'll eat anything though. :-)
Supper easy and cool looking fly 😎
Thanks for the video Matt
Hope you have a great weekend
Thanks Dave; you too my friend!
I like this fly very much. I don't have any foam yet but I see this fly in my box too. Thanks, Matt
Thanks Jim! Stop by Walmart or the craft store; that's where I got this foam. :-)
Good looking fly, i will tie me some!! Thanks for sharing!! Looking forward to the next video!!
Thanks Franky! Saturday's video is even simpler. What I call a cactus bug. A pretty flashy, kind of cool nymph. :-)
Wow Awesome!!
like it.... alot like Puterbaugh Caddis
Sweet fly!!! Looks like a not-too-complicated tie.....
Not at all Dan, and certainly one of my more productive dry flies. As for easy nymphs, I've got another one of those for Saturday morning. :-)
@@SavageFlies SWEET!!!
GUESS I WILL BE ON J STOCKARD AGAIN ..... I DON'T HAVE ANY FOAM... UGH....LIKE I DON'T LIKE GETTING ORDERS FROM THEM ...LOL...THANKS MATT HAVE A AWESOME WEEKEND...AND AS ALWAYS I WILL BE WATCHING ... SEE YA JOE.
Awesome Joe! Don't be afraid to swing by Michael's or Walmart for this foam. I bought a pack two years ago and am still tying from it. :-)
@@SavageFlies OH COOL I WILL CHECK THEM OUT...THANKS MATT...ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND..SEE YA JOE...OH AND SOON AS I GET TO THE POST OFFICE I AM SENDING YOU SOME COOL STUFF TO TRY OUT.
Nice, straight-forward fly. I think the V is to simulate a more “wing-like” pattern rather than a block of foam.
I think you're probably right Kerry with the v-notch to make it look slightly more like a wing. Or maybe it just keeps it from being so top-heavy. Anyway, it's always worked for me. Thanks for watching! Cheers. -Matt
This fly looks like a great floater for faster water, but what would a pattern look like that skitters well in slow water and also floats well? I find I can skitter a Cadis right after it hits the water but further attempts to twitch or skitter send it under water. I'm thinking this happens because once the fly breaks the surface tension, any design feature that causes drag will send it under upon the next attempt to twitch. One thing that baffles me is why Cadis designs use a down eye hook instead of an up eye (assuming they are available in a dry fly hook), because the down eye would certainly contribute to it pulling under for two reasons...first it tends to sink the first few inches of the tippet and second, it acts just like a lip on a Rapala lure which causes it to go under upon a twitch.
Great note and you bring up some good questions! I think our only options to make a better skittering fly is to use more hackle wraps. And maybe a synthetic body that doesn't hold water might help. One thing I'll often do when I think skittering a pattern might work is to make a couple extra false casts (hopefully off to the side) to dry it a bit more. But even then it won't completely dry and still be likely to "drown" when trying to twitch it on the surface. And sometimes putting it in my desiccant bottle for a few seconds will give it a few more minutes of life.
Matt , how wide did you cut the foam wing ..tia
As I was watching this, I started to wonder if those fishing stores that you recommend do sell this kind of flies. I guess they do? What is the price? Any idea? Nice video btw!
Thanks Otto! Some of the stores do, unless they're more tying suppliers than fishing equipment sellers. Some are both and some are either/or. But... even if a store sells flies, some of these old patterns I tie won't be sold there. Ie, some store may only have a stock of a few hundred patterns. No way they'll be selling an obscure forgotten fly like the Destroyer nymph. But this foam wing caddis? It's pretty popular so many stores probably do have it.
And oh yeah, most flies are $1-2 each. Some of the big fancy streamers can be $4-5 each.
@@SavageFlies just a few months from now and I'll be able to talk about all this with other people lol. Thanks for your response.
You talked about different colors for the body, what about different colors for the foam?
Michael- sure, you can tie the foam in whatever color you'd like. I'm not sure how much of the wing the fish will see, probably not too much, but I like it in a bright color so I can see it better. But just in case the fish do see some of it, I would probably stick to something like a yellow, light green, or a tan. Thanks for the question!
@@SavageFlies thank you

Thanks Bolat! Appreciate it my friend. // Спасибо. Я ценю, что вы смотрите.
Hi Matt, You are always looking for fly tying inspiration, and alternate materials for tying flies. I found some natural wool thread, Moire wool, from Nutmeg Hare nutmeghare.com. I bought some and tied some flies and they seem to work out well.
lots of colours to choose from, and can be used instead of dubbing. I would send photos but dont know how to add them in this comment. thannks for your videos, great tying . Cheers Steve
Steve- that's awesome. I'm checking out the site right now. Might have to give them a try. If you want to email any pictures, the best address for me is matt@savageflies.com. Thanks!
