Fly Tying for Beginners - Foam body Sulphur Dry Fly

- A simple dry fly design from C. Boyd Pfeiffer's "Simple Flies," this standard technique can be used to imitate almost any mayfly.
Hook: #12-16 dry fly
Thread: Yellow, white or tan (for a sulphur)
Tail: Light hackle fibers
Rib: Tying thread (leave a tag)
Body: 1.5 mm foam (yellow for sulphur)
Hackle: Light hackle

I believe these "beginner videos" are important, Matt. It is easy for the new "guys" to become overwhelmed with materials, tools and prices. Along that same line, if these folks are new to fly angling, in general, I encourage them to use a handful of easy/inexpensive patterns and take on a farm pond full of fiesty panfish. Great confidence builder! Far less pressure than competing with other anglers, a current, and possibly streamside brush.
Great comment Jim! And I'm with you 100%. Confidence flies is how we get kids, and new fly fishermen, to love the sport. It makes me wonder how many people wanted to try fly fishing, and the first place they go is an over-pressured trout stream where even the best fishermen get skunked half the time. And they don't even get a strike their first few outings. And they give up thinking it's an impossible sport. I might just make this a topic for the intro of one of my next videos. Thank you for the inspiration!

I started my fly tying journey 2 years ago and it so happened to be about this time of the year. Your channel was the first one I watched and still watch to this day. I have learned a lot from your videos as well as other channels ,books and articles you have recommended. Thanks for all that you do to ease the anxiety of a first time fly tyer. Your ability to critique your own fly as not perfect but it will be a “fishable fly” helps us newbies relax and just enjoy our time at the bench. Thanks again Matt! The beginner videos are helpful to both novice and more experienced tyers. They help the beginner by limiting the amounts of materials they need to tie many of the patterns you show ;not like when I started using a tying kit with a bunch of stuff I never used. I advise new tyers to only get the materials they need to tie a pattern they need.

Another nice fly! I think there's an uptick at the New Year for two reasons, one, people get flytying kits for the holidays (my son gave me one from BassPro when we lived in Las Vegas), but secondly, you. Your videos are nice because they're generally between 7 and 8 minutes long, on some other channels the same fly tie could be 20 minutes long! You're personable, humble, and you pick good background tracks. Together, you have a great channel that provides fantastic information, delivered in an easy-going, understandable manner that makes a new or experienced tier beleive they can do it, too. Good series Matt. It's good to have someone show you how to tie, especially when it comes to using materials you're not familiar with. Two good points there on the right type of foam and using thread as a rib. I saw a good sign today of better things to come. A night crawler worked it's way through the 3 inches of slushy snow in my yard this morning. A harbinger of open water fishing and spring. Take care.
Oh wow, you successfully worked in the word harbinger. Impressive! But you're right Joe... that's definitely a nice sign. :-) And I meant to mention, but forgot after pressing record, that this foam I used is more of an open celled foam than some of the more dense foam we typically use for hoppers and such. I kind of use this stuff more for applications like wings under a neversink caddis, or for extended bodies on dragon or damsel fly patterns.

Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Started to watch yesterday and lost my internet. They were working on it apparently. Enjoyed the video. I like the foam body. Going to tie this one. Not sure I’ll change any colors but I may darken the thread tag with a sharpie to create more pronounced segmentation just to see how it compares. My opportunities for dry fly fishing are limited but it will be fun to tie. Take care and have a great weekend.

Nice fly Matt. I might have to try some trout flies for Bluegill and Crappie on that giant lake I'll be at next week. It sure would be fun to catch them on top water stuff. Keep the good stuff coming,
Outstanding Dave! I'd think you can definitely fool some bluegill and panfish on top, but crappie might be a different story. I've heard people crappie fishing with fly rods but I've never tried. The last time I chased crappie was from a boat in the middle of the lake, dropping live minnows directly under. :-)

I tied something like this a few years ago just fooling around. They don't float as well as I hoped the foam body would and are very delicate. I think if I did it again I'd UV coat the body.
Hello sir. Love the bow tie.. I went to Amazon, and the book is out of circulation. Do I have to use a lemon piece of foam. I'm a beginner and I have some black and tan foam. Thanks Tight lines, Steve.
Hi Steve; thanks for the note! You can use pretty much any color you want, but that will determine what mayfly your pattern looks like. If you wanted to tie a sulphur, you'd probably want to keep it to something yellow or orangish. But a tan or gray body with blue dun hackle and tail would be a passable BWO. And remember, you can always use a light color foam and color it with a Sharpie. I've done that with plenty of patterns!
