      Its essentially a pocket computer, whether that means anything for you depends on your use case. For me, I want a terminal, and termux on my phone is just not cutting it.

    Could you try install HaloISO and/or WinesapOS? SteamOS will reportedly be officially supported on the Win Max 2 but meanwhile I'd be interested if anyone can get the hardware adjustments from the quick access menu working. Things like frame rate, refresh rate, TDP, GPU speed, half rate shading, etc. Also, quick suspend and resume while in-game is incredibly important, I'd like to see that tested.

    Nice video - just discovered and subbed to your channel. -- I am a web-dev -- Macbook snob for over 10 years, but I want to start doing some game development and play some games. - I travel a lot & was seriously looking at the Asus Z13, but I guess the price has been a factor in not pulling the trigger. - The WinMax is very appealing, - Apple-ish keyboard, Linux support is nice. - Maybe its a mis-conception but the words "premium windows tablet" - just doesnt sound right to me. - and at double the price of a WinMax, I was worried about reliability and especially repairability of a tablet, - this looks like it might be repairable to some extent. - I just ordered an Asus portable monitor, the XG17AHP. - I think this could be an awesome pairing with the WinMax + small mechanical keyboard & mouse. - Do you think I should jump on this? I am always very nervous of brands I have never heard of - but this really seems like a quality product.

    CS9711 seems to be a fingerprint chip, connected through SPI. It can be found on it's vendor website.
    Though, there is no datasheet available, and I can't find any mention of that FP chip anywhere else. :(
    If you want, you can probably email chipsailing and ask them for datasheet but I highly doubt they will send you anything. The only choice is to maybe reverse engineer Windows driver? I dunno.

    So, as for me, the two things I don't care about don't work. I'm thinking of taring down mine and ripping that camera out. The touch sensor would be nice but I can live without it. I was hoping the rumored SteamOS port to this Valve is helping them with would get in your hands. I just hope it's real, not that I need it, I can run Linux fine without it, but it would be cool to see Valve help companies like this get it working on their hardware as well as it does on the steam deck.

    • @insperatus
      @insperatus 2 роки тому

      Why bust your ass tearing it down when you could just put nail polish or something over the lens?
      I too can't wait to see if the collaboration with Valve to get SteamOS onboard is real too, I am really hoping so. If not, I hope projects like HaloISO and/or WinesapOS can get all the tweaks from the quick access menu working. Also, quick suspend and resume while in-game is also incredibly important.

    • @buckettraveler8398
      @buckettraveler8398 2 роки тому

      @@insperatus I'm opening it to swap out the SSD anyway and I'm sure removing the camera, or unplugging it, is pretty simple once you get the back off. In my other notebooks that is all I really do is unplug them and then plug them back in if I give it away or sell it. The problem with covering it is it still has a mic, I don't find it a huge security risk but in video chat programs or OBS it always wants to use that mic so unplugging it just gets it out of the options in programs.
      Yeah, I don't remember where I heard/read that Valve was working with them but it would be to Valve's benefit to get third parties using their OS. I'm surprised none of the youtubers that have the Winmax 2 right now have tried it with HaloISO. ETA Prime installs HaloISO on everything else and if it is an AMD APU it seems to work really well, it just has problems with Nvidia and Intel so I hope it just works if Valve isn't going to help GPD officially.

    • @insperatus
      @insperatus 2 роки тому

      @@buckettraveler8398 I was thinking about the mic too, assuming you were killing the camera for privacy. I expected it to be a separate device altogether. I would think you could take care of it via software if you're just annoyed about it taking priority, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
      I am actually shocked we haven't seen HoloISO on the Win Max 2 yet, though I suppose Phawx's main focus isn't linux, but is handheld gaming hardware in general. I believe I saw a comment from him stating he's working on a HoloISO video.
      Apparently there's another distro working on bringing SteamOS to other hardware, WinesapOS. What I want to know is, are we gonna see everything from the quick access menu working in these OSes? Most importantly, is quick suspend and resume going to work?
      I asked GDP if they were planning on SteamOS integration and it made the news lol. *Apparently* they will work with Valve to make this happen. With Valve's goals, this makes perfect sense, I hope it happens sooner than later.

      No OS I know of stores fingerprints outside the device itself.
      I don't have a fingerprint module on my laptop, so I use a very short user password so I can easily use sudo for administration tasks. The downside is that someone could easily guess it if they steal my laptop when it is powered on. (If it's powered off, I'm fine; I have FDE with a much longer password.)
      However, if I had a fingerprint module, I could register my fingerprint in PAM, and then I could easily use a longer password as a backup. It's all local to my machine, only my machine has the print.

    Is 32gb RAM too much for gaming?
    I did get the 16gb but I'm getting some silly thoughts.

      32gB is absolutely insane and completely unnecessary. Unless you want to edit videos and huge photos on this thing, there's 0 reason to have the 32gB version

      32 gb is more than enough
      enough for gaming. However if u want future proof. Just buy the 32 gb model so it will last a bit longer without being extremely outdated

      Windows is better with the 6800u. But performance can vary depending on the game.

    I don't think installing Linux on a device like this is worth it. Just go buy a steam deck

    Thanks for the great info, I do have a question that I hope you will have the time to answer.
    Could you check if the "exposed" pcie 4.0 m.2 slot on the back is connected to the cpu or the chipset, and if it is in its own iommu group?
    I would love to get this and be able to connect a pcie 4.0 gpu via that slot and the adt r43sg 4.0, and even possibly pass it to a vm if needed.
    Could also be cool if you could do a comparison of usb4 egpu vs pcie 4.0, especially frame times that would feel like micro stutters.

      Not sure about jury-rigging an eGPU thru the M.2 slot, but an eGPU thru the USB4 definitely works - ETA PRIME demonstrated that in his latest video with a new Win Max 2 6800. Awesome little machine.

      @@dktol56 usb4 will perform a fair bit worse than pcie4.0 if it is connected to the cpu, it is possible that it would be a deciding factor for me.

    1300 usd. No thank you. I can get a gaming laptop, or I could get a steam deck and a thin and light laptop.
