You might consider designing a set of 3D printed basis that go directly from the MX keys to your key caps. If printed in ABS (much harder to get the fit right), they could even be placed in a quick acetone vapor bath to smooth them out. Wouldn't look original, but could look professionally made.
Certainly but mass production is the real headache 😣
@@RetroRecipes Well, if you don't mind a premium, there is always the ShapeWays service. Their parts would also be extremely consistent and you can sell the parts from their site and they are made to order. No stock to carry.
I dare you to make a Amiga out of new parts as well.
Do they print the letters too?
This is like watching Bob Ross of the Retro Tech world. Really cool!
Sure is one laid back dude.. That's how I am after my medical marijuana.
I think you were better off being fired from that keyboard factory, they were just trying to CTRL you.
or even just keeping TABs on you ...

Why does that “wee-oooh wee-oooh” screw sound, that Ladyfractic makes, always put a smile on my face?!
Same here. I used to make the same sound when cleaning windows. Then I discovered whilst scuba diving that my mask lens made a similar sound when rubbed. Many clouds of bubbles ensued.
Because Its Hilarious As FUUNCTION KEY
It was great to watch this when it premiered. As a 22-year old, I've only ever messed with the C64 (and other systems) in an emulator, but I always like seeing videos like this and hearing stories from people older than me who actually had these when they were still in production. Great video as always! 👍🏽
While I'm old enough (at age 40) to have remembered using a relative's C64 as a kid, it wasn't nearly as popular here in Canada (or the US) as it was in Europe and other regions back in the day. As a result, most of my exposure to it has also been through emulation, so it's always fun to see what kinds of stuff people were doing and are currently doing with them, as it was quite a machine in its heyday.
Quite the thing.
The only time I saw a c64 in action in person, which was already somewhat past it's peak, would've been my friend who had one (and a bunch of amigas) but this was already the early 90's...
That was maybe 1-2 days that I saw it in action.
I'm old enough to remember these systems on the tail end, but my personal experience consisted entirely of atari 800XL's...
Even that was a strange experience in hindsight, since I experienced the entire thing through a monochrome green monitor, such that nowadays I barely recognise the games when I see them in colour... XD
As an old C-64 user back in the day, this video has sparked a desire to go back to those days when I had three SX-64's and possibly two dozen C-64's and the 64-C models along with many 1541, 1571, 1541II and a 1581. Oh and hundreds, possibly thousands of programs and games. I miss it. I even modified one 64 to use two SID chips to play six part music programs. Sadly I gave it all away! I was involved in many user groups spanning two states. Please continue these videos.
I hated my job at the keyboardfactory too. They always wanted me to do double shifts. Nowadays I'm working at the motherboardfactory; having chips all day.
"What's for tea, love?"
"Chips and megabites!"
I hated my job at the sodium factory. I was losing electrons all the time.
I just found your channel, awesome stuff. I just had to say, your voice is incredible. If you were the voice of all GPS systems, road rage would decrease by 90% overnight.

This is so wonderful. I miss my C64 from my childhood but they seem to never show up in the wild around here. Maybe one day. Thanks for all the love you give to the C64.
Another great video. Brings back lots of memories for me. Had a vic and a amiga. Still play with lego. One thing I like about your channel is you keep your sound level consistant, without blaring loud than super quiet parts. Congrats on all your success.
Two of my favourite things from the 80’s, the Commodore 64, and LEGO !!
1 minute in and I stopped paying attention and went to eBay to find those 80s robots in the background
The old tomy robots? They are great, but today only for decorative purposes. If you have MUCH to much money. ;-)
Radio Shack sold them as well.
my dad has one of those its broken though
Omnibot?? 🧐
@@CommodoreFan64 Tandy made a deal with tomy back in the 80's to make robie Jr and robie sr, Robie Jr was tandy's versions of omni JR and the robie sr was tandy's version of Hearoid. I own just about every robot tomy made along with Mr. Money which tandy also called robie the banker.
Awesome, I love the way retro gaming/computing is still alive and well..more than ever!👍
Awesome! I knew about the Ultimate-64, but I didn't feel the need to get one until I watched this video. What a cool idea to have an all new Commodore 64!
As a preteen messing about with computer internals in the 90s, I had that plug was not turned on moment far too often, really hit me hard in the nostalgia. Imagine a 9 year old installing a ram module, and the computer not turning on again.
There was a Commodore C64PC Ultimate about 10 years ago, by Commodore USA. It was actually just a modern PC in a 64 replica case with Ubuntu.
I bought one, and the keys were nearly identical to original 64, including that hand painted quality of the letters. Infact the whole case was very close to the original.
The guy who bought Commodore passed away, and the company with him, but the ability to mass produce C64 keys is presumably still out there somewhere
Making an 8-bit retro computer with FPGA's on a modern PCB. We indeed live in a fantastic age, with fantastic people.
theotheroneification I want a modern 5.25” 1541 physical replacement drive which ALSO has a working USB port.
Best of luck on your build!
in 2069, our grandchildren will be restoring smartphones and creating YT channels to show them off. Yes - I really do think YT will be among us in 50 years, maybe under a different name but it will never disappear. YT is fast become Humanities Fossil Record.
In addition to your cool LEGO version I hope to see a label version, stamped on a 3D printed upper, lower case as Perifractic 64, with all modern mini itx. As Commodore USA offered similar to purchase some time ago, maybe three versions, a retro game label as "beginner", "novice", "expert" would be a neat retro game twist added to the case.
OMG I just fell in love with you Peri, 4.33 Holden VK Commodore SS, god that image is sooooo good to see, especially since how rare those cars are nowadays :)
Ah the VK that takes me back as i use to have a VL Calais with a bombed 308
Jet Set Willy is a platform video game originally written by Matthew Smith for the ZX Spectrum home computer. It was published in 1984 by Software Projects and ported to most home computers of the time.

Love the mechanical keys and design of it although the original bread bin will never be beaten 🤓

AMAZING JOB! This video has required a lot of efforts to be produced! Congrats for your energy, your style and the great contents!
Thank you for your kind words. Means a lot. 👍🕹
I also have an Ultimate64 - made a couple of videos on it. When I saw your serial number my heart stopped. I have the one right after yours! My serial is 804 - it's view-able in the 1st video. I turned it into a C16 like C64c and chose to put two real SID chips in it, but the FPGA SIDS would be cool as well.
I am seriously considering building the yellow/grey Lego64 you got sitting on your bench.
My Turbo Chameleon64 on its docking station and my Mist C64 FPGA machines do fall into the all new Commodore category but alas not compatible with all peripherals like you stated :P
your like motherboard brothers or soemthing...
Pretty incredible coincidence! What are the odds?! (Ok 1 in 804.)
Very cool. Didn't know there was virtually everything to build a C64 out there. I still have my original C64. Although at this point it probably needs re-capped.
Great project. When I was younger, I owned a c64. Then I moved onto the c64c, 128 and finally finished with an Amiga. All awesome machines.
@@HelloKittyFanMan. Hi. I had them when I was younger. And I owned 2 Amiga 500's and 1 Amiga 1200.
They made over 12 million C64s. It's crazy that no one is commercially producing the keys. There has to be a big enough market of retro collectors to make it profitable.
There is an Indiegogo that I’ve backed and is nearly complete now. I’ll make a new video.
Wow. That is pretty darn cool. I didn't know one could get custom printing on Lego bricks. This looked like a time-consuming project - great work!
It was. Thanks my friend! Gave you a mention briefly in the recent Retro Hour podcast BTW, referencing who the PIIe was sent to. Remember that? 😉🕹️
@@RetroRecipes Oh! Thanks kindly for the mention. I guess I should listen to that podcast. Bad retro me.
You have such a soothing voice. Where it not for the very important fact that he is not yet dead, you could be the reincarnation of 'whispering' Bob Harris.
bit too soothing.. if I turn it up enough that I can hear it easily, the music is too loud..

It's funny how the 64C's keycaps used such an iconic font that's usually associated with logos and titles-and didn't use it anywhere in their packaging or advertising, but instead continued using Kabel. It's also interesting that the (non-PET) font they used on the breadbox models has yet to be identified. No, seriously; do a search for it and you'll find a lot of people discussing it but having no luck finding a perfect match.

Peri's voice has never affected me that way, I remember One of Peri's first video. It was when he put not one but 2 wall wart type adapters in a box to build a C64 power supply! I told him then to buy some tools that would hurt him (Not from the dollar store!) and I told him to practice! I see my words didn't go unheard! Anyone who tries and works as hard as Peri Fractic deserves a great following! I've been a fan ever since! So to him and you Keep Going Your Doing Great! Never Stop and never let anyone tell you, you can't do something that is important to you!

Yellow is a great c6 color.
Brings me back to the border on the BMX racer game I used to play in 1984.
As Clive Sinclair would say, "It looks like it was designed by a Bulgarian bricklayer" 🤣
Love it. Well done. It must have took a lot of time to design and build
Could there be a similar treatment for the Atari 8-bit computer? A 400 or 800 conversion would be alright, but the extras in the later models -like the 130XE with its bank switching memory- also make them very good candidates!
I'm not sure what's under the keycaps. I only have a 400. 🤔
@@RetroRecipes I wish I could tell you! I also only ever had the 400 - later adding a "B-Key 400" upgrade. It was a good machine to learn 6502 Assembler on, and one retro system I still enjoy messing around with on occasion. I just can't get enough of "display lists" and "player/missile graphics." In fact, when I'm not thoroughly swamped in managing the Marlin Firmware project, I'm trying to improve the current toolset for retro coding with a polished version of bAtariBASIC (2600) and tools for working with AtariBASIC in modern editors like Sublime Text 3. With any luck, by the end of the week I'll have a perfected ATASCII to UTF-8 converter completed. The retro coding tools on macOS have a lot of catching up to do compared to their Windows counterparts. github.com/thinkyhead/6502-Tools
There's the 1088XEL and 1088XLD. But they aren't using the same form factors as the original computers. The XEL is using a Micro-ITX form factor for its motherboard and the XLD is using the same form factor as the Atari 1050 Disk Drive's motherboard. There's an interesting video on UA-cam of both networked together in a MIDI ring to play 8-bit MIDI Maze together.
Awesome video, I had no idea that Legos would fit on the C64. But you are missing the D and instead got two F.
That was so he could pay respects twice as fast
Yeah that was bothering me all video
Just a draft print error
Perifractic's Retro Recipes it’s so you can say f to pay respects twice for not being able to use the Commodore logo.
Did anyone else have the problem of having carpet in their house?
no matter what I did I have a commodore 64 for about a year or two and I would shock the hell out of the ports. No more to commodore 64 after that!
It would take a month to get it back from the commodore repairman. LOL
Loved the brick commodore ad that appeared out of nowhere
Great video
What brand of mic are you using for your videos?
Blue Yeti USB and pricey filters!
When I watch your videos, I feel like I am watching Blue Peter. ;)
That's such a nice compliment ❤️
I still have a C64 and an Amiga500, in original, well-used beat-up condition (from the years that I used them, 1984-1992) along with a 1541 drive, a cassette drive, and much more, stashed in boxes. I am 48 now but I hereby pledge I will restore them before I become 60. They are part of a handful of items to survive a "Purge"(for lack of a better word, and certainly not by choice) in my personal life. The only time these machines leave me is when I am dead.

Its very cool! Though MechBoard64 pre-orders are closed for the Fall 2019 batch (according to its website), and its up in the air if there will be any more batches after that (depends on demand). So if you want to do this, and are not already on the pre-order list, you have to wait until an unknown time in 2020 before maybe receiving one, so the keyboard is still a major Achilles heel in making an all-new C64C.

I'm new here but how can you type so fast on a c64? whenever I type fast it skips the middle letters of words since it doesn't have a keyboard buffer?
