  • Market Street is a major artery in San Francisco, California. It had all kinds of shops, malls, bars, restaurants, and stores that are now closed, It begins at The Embarcadero in front of the Ferry Building and runs southwest through downtown, passing the Civic Center and the Castro District, to the intersection with Portola Drive in the Twin Peaks

I grew up in SF in the '50s and early '60s. Moved to Marin in mid-'60s. This is heartbreaking to me. I have lived in Alaska for over 40 years, and the last few times I visited the Bay Area I was appalled. So sad. I loved what San Francisco used to be. This is tragic.

There is a transformation going on to replace brick and mortar businesses because online business is wrecking them. A huge number of SF employees moved to remote home work as it's better and cheaper. It's also extremely expensive to live and operate in SF because people love to live there. A tent in SF would rent for more than an apartment in most of America.

A homeless man walked into the place i was eating, yelled some things i couldn't understand went around asking for money then got angry at everyone. Outside, i saw someone urinating and then some lady yelled at me cause i picked up my suitcase crossing the road. She said " i aint gonna steal yo sh*t , quit fc*ing acting!!! " to my face. My father grew up in SF.
He lived right on El Camino Del Mar, within a single block of where the Presidio starts. From his bedroom window, he looked down the shoreline of Baker Beach and could see the Golden Gate Bridge clearly. He attended the language school at the Presidio and could have walked home for lunch if that was allowed. He left for the military and then worked his whole life in the intelligence field.
He went back to visit friends and relatives in SF, many times since he graduated high school in the mid 1950s (from George Washington HS).
He said he started to notice major changes as far back as the 80s, but it wasn't until the late 2000s that the city really went to hell in a handbasket.
These days he wouldn't visit if you gave him free airfare.

It is shocking to see how far it has fallen. The political, social and environmental degradation is mind-boggling. Every local and state politician for the past 50 years should be held accountable.
Also: Why haven't I seen videos of San Francisco like this until now? I watch the news all the time. I'm a news junkie. I've seen short clips of the Tenderloin, but nothing like this. It is the work of the 'Haves' against the 'Have Nots'. You can either afford to live in luxury, or you sleep on the street. Those are your options. It's not R v D or Black v White. It's Rich v Poor & Americans in every major cities on both coasts have already lost the battle. Because they won't throw these wealthy money grubbing criminals out of office. This is insane. And heartbreaking. Heartbreakingly insane.
In '94, on a dare from friends, I shoplifted about $25-30 worth of shampoo and other small items from a grocery store. I was caught and arrested, then later had to go to court to pay ~$500 (~5 times the value of the stolen goods, plus court costs). I was 12. *Twelve* and society expected more from me than *GROWN MEN AND WOMEN* in SF, who can rob stores (and individuals) of up to *$1,000* and face absolutely no consequences. This isn't to say I want a greater presence of gov't police in everyone's business in San Francisco. But someone (preferably the people) needs to stand up and say "enough!" This video is what happens when no one expects anything more from people. There *has* to be a middle ground between too much of a police presence and complete apathy that foments lawlessness and the doom spiral of once-great cities.

Vote for democrats and this is what always happens. Why is it the voters are so dense? Is the media blowing smoke and hiding the truth of what democrats are doing in Portland, Detroit, Chicago and the rest of California? Do yourself a favor and wake up the liberal idiots who keep believing the lies of democrats help them smell the coffee or leave them in a group of beggars and drug addicts one of their cities and figure out what is going on!

I hate how people blame progressive politics on the issues in sf. Of course the city has been mismanaged but the core issue is nimbyism which is an apolitical topic. Not building enough housing got sf into this mess and the high cost living that resulted from low housing supply caused cost of living to surge. Tech workers became the main demographic the city tried to attract pushing out everyday people. When COVID hit and wfh happened they left because of said high cost of living. This is literally because they didn’t build enough housing and that’s not conservative or liberal that’s just bad governance.

I lived in downtown SF in the late 70s when I was going to Grad School at SF State. I lived in a boarding house at the corner of Post and Jones. It was basic and old, but I never felt unsafe. In fact, I thought that SF was the most exciting place I had ever seen in my life (to that point). The AT&T store you showed at Powell and Market, that used to be a Bank of America and it was called the “Day and Night” branch because it was open until 8 PM which was extremely rare for a bank in those days. I briefly worked there while going to school. I had a great time living in SF and will never forget those days. Those precious memories and dreams.

I used to work on market and also on Pine. The mall was open with full occupancy, Carl’s Jr. was still there, that donut shop was there, multiple coffee shops, chocolate shops, multiple nutrition stores, the workwear store was there, the army navy was still there, Quiznos, Walgreens, the gap, all within a couple blocks of one another. From what I understand they are almost all gone if not all gone. People should know that even 20 years ago most of these retail stores had a policy of not stopping shoplifters. But when the city Council and mayors decided to just stop prosecuting all crime, including drug, dealing, drug use, car, break-ins, and then anyone who was arrested gets let out immediately, things went completely to hell. Also, they will not arrest the drug dealers because all the drug dealers are illegal immigrants now and if they arrest them they have to deal with the problem of arresting an illegal immigrant which we know they don’t want to deal with. The last thing they will ever do is deport somebody or turn them over to immigration. All this scares all the tourists off that would patronize those businesses. Then the governor shuts the entire state down and tells everybody to stay home for two years and not work. People never return to that area for work so there goes another 50% of the foot traffic for those businesses. This was 100% caused by leftist policy and nothing else.

    • @TheBlackHarrington
      @TheBlackHarrington 11 місяців тому +8

Also, it should be noted that within five or six blocks on the same side of market Street there was often two of the same store! There was two Carl’s Jr.. There was two GNC on the same side of market, and then another one a couple blocks away on Pine Street! Corporations were able to operate multiple store, fronts all in the same neighborhood and turn a profit. There would be a Benetton in the mall and then across the street from the mall there would be a Sisley, which was a Benetton owned brand. The world flagship gap location was right there on market. I believe where the cable car turnaround was. If you can’t get foot traffic in your store where the cable car turnaround is then there is no way a business can survive there.

Market street has been going down long before the pandemic. The city has reconfigured the street many times and basically eliminating all foot traffic and vehicles. They made room for empty electric buses and bicycle riders who are mostly nutcases.

I hope Gavin Newsom, all parties, SF mayor, and all Californians learn from this. Many of us made mistakes by voting for the wrong people and wrong propositions. Now is better than never to take action. I love to see crowds and stores back in the city.
We should change all laws protecting criminals.
We should support local businesses and stop buying online as much as possible.
We need laws that brings more safety to Bay Area. We need laws that help the police put these criminals in jail.
Please take action before it is too late. San Francisco is the starting point. If we continue accepting this life style and don’t act now, after SF we see other cities become dead soon.
