After about 8 months drought, the Kantou area (that includes Tokyo and many other districts) received snowfall and then lately a little rain. February is the time when the Japanese apricots (Prunus mume) start blooming and several birds flutter around or feed from the flowers nectar. It is also the time when the Japanese waxwing comes to feed on the Japanese mistletoe and it is the only moment it can be seen. The winter birds are still there.

Hello!👋 ! Yes indeed. There is an abundance of trees in bloom which is very striking to see. Some mountains are so covered in wild cherry trees that, in bloom, it looks like a huge garden full of petals. It lasts about two to three weeks. Then other mountain trees start blooming. Cities used to have many apricot and cherry blossoms but now trees are scarce in town. It’s mostly concrete. But of course it all depends on rainfall.
I hope you are well and that your winter will be normal. Thank you for writing. It’s always a pleasure.

Hello! Thank you indeed. Yes it’s the beginning of spring now, the very early beginning. Impossible to go out because it’s raining ( which is very needed!). I am very glad you liked the turtle doves, I found them cute but I had never seen that before.( They are shy birds!). Good luck with your filming and the weather too.😊😊👋👋🙏🙏‼️

Thank you very very much for your kind words. I am glad that you watched the video. The waxwings were way up in a tree on a steep hill and as I can’t use a tripod it was awkward. But I did my best. Waxwings are hard to see. The red flanked blue tail was unexpected near apricot blossoms. Everybody wants to film them but they are solitary and territorial ( and only 14cm long for all that).
I wish you a clement weather and above all nothing like it was in Canada last year. Thank you again. Patricia.

Thank you Patricia, I’m afraid your reply got buried in spam emails and I only saw it when clearing out my in box. Great info on the Waxwing, I wish our visits were as consistent but we’re pretty much stuck in an unpredictable five year cycle.
My leg is still painful but I haven’t been out birding as I have suffering with some sort of respiratory virus that has left me incredibly tired. I’m feeling a little better but just haven’t got the energy to go out birding yet. Hope you are well and able to carry on making your wonderful videos. Best of luck! 🍀🍀💐

As always a very lovely selection of birds and plants. The Japanese White Eye is such a beautiful bird and seeing it feeding on the Apricot blossom nectar is an iconic combination. I’ve never seen a Tree Sparrow, they are rare here now.
Japanese Waxwings! Beautiful birds. Do they actually breed in Japan or like ours breed further north and travel south in the winter?
We have had a couple of Red Flanked Bluetails but I didn’t get to see them.
Good luck with your next birding adventure and thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much for writing so kindly. The Japanese waxwing likes cold and breeds in Kamchatka and Manchuria. It spends the winter till April in Japan and some part of Korea. Its main problem up North is the loss of its habitat due to deforestation. It likes to eat berries of different varieties but can’t resist the orange berries of the Japanese mistletoe. It’s through finding bits of leaves, twigs or dropped berries on the path that you know they may be there. Otherwise they are rather silent.
The white-eye used to be caught with nets to put in cages. Fortunately this is now completely forbidden 🚫. People enjoy their little bell like constant chirping in blossoms.
I hope you have recovered from your expedition in the storm like wind and that you feel better. I have seen on the BBC that the weather isn’t great at the moment in the UK.
Let’s hope for sunshine in the coming month while you are out.
By the way the yellow tailed waxwing also visits here but I have never seen it.
      Excellent birding!🙏🙏👋👋😊😊‼️
