Last year I filled Christmas stockings for the last time (I used to buy gifts for everyone AND fill a stocking for each). Since the stockings had sentimental value, as they were from my grown children's childhood, I told them to keep the stockings but I wouldn't be doing them anymore. Lots of money for useless "things" that no one needed anyway and very stressful running around the dollar stores and the Christmas Tree Shop to find little things that weren't expensive. I felt better the moment I did it!

    • @FrugalMoneySaver
      @FrugalMoneySaver  3 роки тому

My mom did the exact same thing with the stockings until maybe three years before she passed Georgie! They were all the original ones we had from when we were born. You probably saw them many times when you would come for the holidays!! Glad you’re making it easier on yourself! Miss you so much!

One way I have reduced the amount of decorations for different seasonal things is starting to use books in my decor. I realized if I pick some beautiful hardback books I already have in the right color themes like reds and greens for Christmas, then I can make charming little decorating moments with the books and I only need a handful of actual season specific pieces to fill a mantle or a books shelf or any little corner I want to decorate. I also use candles and other home decor that fit in these color schemes and I find I have things that aren't specifically Christmas decor, but they work beautifully once the things are all pulled together with a cohesive color pallet.

I am making wood slice ornaments and my famous fudge for everyone on my list. As a young child growing up in the 1950's, I remember how my Mom and Dad did their best to make our Christmas happy and special with simple gifts and homemade goodies. It may not seem like much today, but back then it meant a lot.

I love the no impulse buying tip and sticking to a list. It’s so easy like you say to do that and then it gets out of control trying to keep everyone’s gift amounts equal. I did a list and budget this year and use an app called Gift List to track my gifts, etc. I also wrapped them as I got them. I was under budget too! Oh and no guilt…brilliant! It’s so easy to feel guilt if you feel like your gift you bought isn’t as expensive or fancy as what someone gave you, but that is society trying to rope you into consumerism. Not falling for that this year! Thoughtfulness is key. It is not the $ spent.

I love the tips you gave. I am really trying to focus on Jesus's birth especially this year. It will be an amazon Christmas for us. We give extra to our charities during the holidays to avoid the malls. I am hoping that people will stay home and not do a "Black Friday" shopping day. Covid-19 is bad in our State of Hawaii and we went on lock down twice already. We finally got to tier 2 on Wednesday. Your pasta carbonara looks amazing and easy to make too. Were you reading my mind? You must have been reading my mind. I also thought you need a bigger pan, sauté the garlic in the oil and remove the garlic when it starts to get golden, scramble egg lightly before adding the cheese and cook pancetta instead of bacon. However, your pasta looks delicious and would not say no to a bowl. Christmas adds so must stress when it should be a time of celebrating the birth of Jesus. I decided instead of buying useless stuff people don’t need I will donate my Christmas money to a needed charity that I can trust will go where it is truly needed. The greatest Christmas present for my husband and me to have would be friends like you and Paul, to share a meal and talk about anything and everything. God bless you and keep making these Vlogs they truly fill my lonely heart. 😔

What a wonderful and thoughtful video about Christmas! I just wanted to add a suggestion for an item I am planning to do for gift giving this year myself. I am going to order a bunch of sewing needles and then thread them with black, gray, cream & white threads. I figure people who are getting older would find it helpful not to need to thread a needle and people who are younger would love to have the convenience of a pre-threaded needle. As a quilter, I have learned these 5-6 shades can handle almost any sewing task. using specific bright colors you usually et the shade wrong, but these neutrals blend into most projects. I plan to find a few quotes about sewing and love to add to the gift. I'm hoping to pack each set of needles with a few simple buttons and perhaps other items if I happen to come across things on sale. I'll stick each needle through a piece of paper and wrap the thread around it so they do not get tangled. If someone had a small pretty box from the dollar store, that might make a great thing to hold the whole set. Hope you enjoy!

My heart resonates so much with this.dince my precious parents have gone,I find I seek sanctuary in keeping going some of their traditions and I claim full enjoyment in doing so. The family have torn up in my eyes since they’ve gone and nothing is the same, but il willingly and lovingly keep traditions going. Christmas is about the children firstly and family, the ones you love. Such a shame that Christmas has become so expensive and commercial. I grew up wishing for better things but it never disappointed me not having it- I so loved and appreciated everything.
The magic for me st Christmas cost nothing.
A local brass band walks the roads in the evening on certain days, playing Christmas carols. It was the magic that warmed my heart when I was a little girl and now, coming back to my childhood home I still have that pleasure and there are still some of the same members playing in the band too.
I now generously give when they knock at the door.when they come round and play those carols,I’m completely enriched. And it’s free,it’s my choice to give but the memories from childhood and now are worth more than money . So sorry,I’ve rambled on ...
some may not get this, but we have indulged in keeping our Christmas cards and asked people not to send any,ore ,that we will put the cards sent before,up again . It’s such a waste of money.people are now donating to charity instead of giving cards to everyone and that’s a good idea too. This is just my pennies worth. You speak and explain so well,I do love your videos. So helpful. Blessings 🙏🏻💟

I’m going back and viewing your past videos. I have a long time friend who has Parkinson’s disease. For Christmas I’m going to bake them a cake and give them some freezer meals and casseroles. That will definitely help them out at meal time! Do they need the food? No, but it will be a great help to them.

I'm using your advice this 2022 Christmas season. Inflation has hit hard this year. I have alot of Xmas decorations and the trees, yes several Xmas trees at my house LOL!!! I'm staying away from the stores to stop the impulse buying.

every Christmas, one of our traditions has always been to load up the car and drive around to look at peoples lights. Now, in my 60s I get to decorate my yard for the current "drive-through" age. it's such a joy. We take time to express Christ, the true meaning of Christmas, but we don't go overboard.

I donated my artificial tree after I became a widow 11 yrs. ago. Since I have no family I use beautiful glass bowls to display my heirloom ornaments from my Grandparents & my Mother. Less time & stress now due to not spending hours setting up & putting everything away. Also with the current situation my friends & I are only exchanging Christmas cards & letters. Thank you for all of your helpful & wonderful videos. I love them.❤

Shopping definitely more difficult this year. I have two Granddaughters with me (12 and 7) and I'm the one doing most of the buying. The 12 year old realizes the more spiritual aspect of the season, but the 7 year old not so much. Have to work on that. Didn't realize the recipe was so simple.....you had me at bacon and garlic. Love how articulate you are in your videos.

With our large family this year we are changing it up. We are all just buying a $25 gift card to a store of our choice and then a "white elephant" gift which is something we don't need anymore or we're going to take to the thrift store. I think it's great and is going to make the season a lot less stressful!! #1 not having to spend much $ and #2 not having to stress about shopping 🤗

Mary in what way did I "miss the boat?" I don't need to mention the virus constantly. I said to simplify the holiday and to concentrate on the meaning. I spoke about wanting to be present in the moment, tap into spirituality, and be thankful. Your comment confused me...

@@FrugalMoneySaver Emmy, you definitely did NOT miss the boat. I loved your suggestions and we all know that the pandemic is here, we don't need anyone to tell us that! Some people just can't keep from saying whatever pops into the head, even if it is hurtful and NOT helpful. I hope everyone works to be more patient, supportive and encouraging as we go through this pandemic and I, personally, think you are amazing AND inspirational!

Great video. You can have the Christmas you want, without breaking the bank, if you put your mind to it & plan for it throughout the year (or 6 months)! It should be about enjoying time with loved ones, without getting too strsssed, & sticking to a budget! Your pasta dish looks delicious! Enjoy your weekend! 😎👍🇬🇧
