  • A mysterious shipwreck washed ashore in a storm and it made national news, so when I read about it I just HAD to go for a look. It wasn't the easiest place to get to but boy was I glad I made the trip. Come along with me on a journey of discovery to the Orkney Islands in Scotland...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for UA-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

What a Journey! And here I am, Orcadian and proud, an 85 minute ferry away, and I have not yet gone to see it. To my knowlege the plan is for it to be brought up from the shore and preserved then put in the heritage centre. The beach it washed up on is called Tresness, regarded as one of Orkney's finest beaches, which is saying something! A lifetime of exploration would be an understatement for Orkney, and I look forward to the next time you make the trip, as there are many more islands to be explored, no pressure of course!

Not much is known yet I'm afraid, but it's thought to be the hull of an English-built ship, possibly from as far back as the 1700s. We have some archaeologists coming up from England soon who will hopefully be able to give us more answers.

I only discovered this channel yesterday and have throughly enjoyed watching your vlogs and adventures. I’m Australian but of British and Scottish heritage so these are just wonderful to watch, and for some very strange reason, they stir something in my soul but I have never been there in my life. I now cannot get enough of these outer Scottish islands as it feels oddly familiar but also not familiar at the same time. Maybe I lived there in another lifetime, who knows. Just wonderful and so different from Australia. Thank you very much for showing these for those of us who are so far away but are fascinated by these stunning islands. Ps Gary is an absolute legend for lending you his car. I would lend you mine if you are ever in Castlemaine, Victoria. What a good bloke!

Kettletoft Harbour - don't you just admire the way all these small harbours are so beautifully constructed with dressed stone blocks? Good man, Gary, for lending you his car to let you (and us) see so much more of Sanday than expected. The wreck of the wooden hull gave me goosebumps, just to imagine it's history. Happy you had the comfort of a bunk on the return journey!

Now that was certainly quite the adventure! Isn't it amazing how people can be so kind...kindness goes a long way in the world for sure! Such a great discovery with the wreckage! Not sure if this is the same one that has been on the news here in Nova Scotia, Canada or not, but it seems there were going to be efforts made in salvaging it? Pretty amazing history there!

Wow Steve, now those skies and seas were something out of this world weren't they? I do hope and pray I can retrace your steps on this one (and many others). And thank you for letting is see a rare and fleeting jewel from our past, quite compelling to imagine the story and people behind it, the world owes you one of for that.
Also big thanks to Gary, and also to you for not bypassing the airport, we old buzzards who can no longer afford fuel, much less wings to put it in much appreciate the look at every one we can.

Have just read the Islanders of Sanday are trying to get interest in saving this piece of shipping history, hope they are successful, it could be as important as the Mary Rose.

Just love the Scottish accent... and it's so fun to read all the Norse names in Lerwick, now when I'm "google visit" the city. What a beauty! Just the end name of the city "wick" is "vik" in Norwegian, meaning "bay" in English I think. We have many places that end-named vik here in Norway. And then we know what kind of "bay" the place has. Sanday (Sandøy) Sand Island. Guess it's a sandy island.
Would love to visit the island and of course main land of Scottland as well. Keep up the good job Steve👍

    Steve:
Brilliant video and trek! Thank you so much. Although I've been to Orkney several times, and explored several islands - weather affected my attempt to reach Sanday, so, at the moment, it is unexplored for me. Your fine travelogue has spurred me once again to get back and experience it for myself. Many folks tend to overlook what Orkney contains, but you've showed a lot of that history in this adventure - from sparkling seas, to wind, rain, thousands year old sites, crofts, WW relics, the list goes on and on - and the great and friendly residents. There's always something in every direction and reachable by the many ferries and short flights. Congrats on finding the ship at the end of the rainbow! Thanks again and safe travels.
