I am running 3 large tote bins that are basically this system upscaled by a factor of 10. You are so right about having to keep on top of the moisture/critter levels! I have used a few different methods of harvesting and I don’t really have a favourite one yet…

If I had my way I'd have three of those same types of tote worm bins you mentioned (I have a bunch I could use in my garage) but The Executive Producer has me on a strict diet of 4 worm bins!! Harvesting is the where all the variation in technique comes in...I'm still experimenting with how to harvest this bin as well. My Outdoor worm bin harvests so well all the time by sifting with perfectly moist, but not too moist, grain like casings. Where as this one can be sticky and bouldery depending on how moist it is. Let me know if you come up with a favorite way to harvest your totes so I can try it out!! Thanks so much for watching & for your long time support of our channel!!🪱🪱🪱

I just love your updates on your traveling worm bin. This shows anyone, even a balcony gardener can raise their own terrific soil amendment in vermicompost.
I have two plastic bins going with a horizontal migration, easy as falling off a log.
Saw a couple comments, if you ever run out of food for the worms? For me, at this time of year most comes from the garden . For example, the 1st round of broccoli is done, started some more in pots, until I am ready to transplant I leave the old plants in the soil, then worm food. Another reason I like to use home raised food is that it is full of native microbes, not from California or Guatemala. The microbes from here will survive, the ones from different climates, probably not in WI.

My brother in law who became the Wing Commander was one of my students when I was teaching pilot training...he met my sister and the rest is history 😂 The whole story is best told over beers!! I love this Tiny Traveling Worm Bin for the same reason...so portable and easy to manage no mater how small your living space!! "Easy as falling off a log"😂🤣😂 I gotta start using that saying!! We started worm composting a few months ago. I am starting to wonder if it is worth the effort?
I started with 2 15 gallong concrete mixed trays. We got about 60 lbs of castings.
Then I bought 2 5 tray Vevor stacked worm huts. They seem like a complete waste of time as the bins were working. The Vevor have a filter on top, and air holes but all the condensation drips back down so they tend to get super moist and lend to mold.
Who knows? We are going to keep going and learning. Ultimately I want to build an outdoor composting center about 20'x10'. Going to take old pallets apart and make it so they don't get too hot or too cold.
It got so hot outside I hed to bring all the worms in the house and it kinda sucks, but the worms are loving it

Thank you so much for the kind words!! Believe it or not I started with 50-100 red wigglers that I got from a Vermicomposting workshop at my local county extension office. After I harvested it the first time, 5 months later, I had 491 in there!! Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/8N2NGFw3s54/v-deo.html The second time I harvested I had 612 worms: ua-cam.com/video/lxFjjGWRn8M/v-deo.html but the next three times it was right around 1,000 worms...so it seems like the carrying capacity of this worm bin is 1,000 plus or minus 100 red wigglers!! They really reproduce fast (double every 2 months or so) if the conditions are right! It was actually hard to start with so few worms because it is hard to make sure you don't overfeed them...I suggest starting a worm bin this size with 1,000 worms and a normal sized worm bin with 2,000 if the budget can handle it! But if you can only start with a few, it can be done...just don't overfeed!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thanks a lot, I was planning on starting with 200-250. But, like you said, I have heard they reproduce relatively quickly, so it shouldn't be a problem for too long.
That should work!! Just keep the bedding damp not wet and whatever you do feed less than you think you need to and check back on them in 4-5 days to see if they ate what you fed!!
I don’t think it was this video but I saw a cherry pit in your bin, can worms eat those?
Soooooo....Cherry pits are one of the longest foods I've had in my bins besides peach pits! Eventually they get so brittle that you can crush them with your fingers, but it takes forever! I stopped saving mine to put in my worm bins but I'll let them slide in if I have some cherries that go bad, I don't take the time to take them out. I hope this helps!! Are your worm bins able to keep up with all the food scraps your family produces? Or do you end up throwing stuff away that could’ve been put in a bin?
Curious since you have multiple systems but don’t go in them weekly / as often as I thought you would be to feed
Great question!! My worms are able to keep up with all the food my immediate family produces...we recently became empty nesters when our last son went of to college last fall (but he is back for the summer). My mother & father and our oldest son & his wife also send us some of their food scraps...I'm not able to use all of that so I do put some of it in the regular compost pile. All our used coffee & tea grounds go in our worm bins, with occasional dumps in the regular compost and we even go to some local coffee shops to get some of their used coffee grounds for our regular compost pile. The one thing that we can't keep up with and occasionally goes into the trash are egg shells...I don't like to put them in the compost pile without grinding them up and I just get sick of constantly grinding them!! It is amazing how little trash we actually produce to go into the garbage bin...we usually skip a pick up or two each week out by the curb because we just don't produce that much that gets thrown away! I used to feed less but more often but I found as I got more bins it became easier to spread out the feeding to 14-18 days. This tiny bin sometimes gets fed little bits sooner than that and my Urban Worm Bag feedings are spread out a little further because it can hold so much. I store my food scraps in my freezer and the over flow of food scraps sometimes goes in our deep freezer in the garage. I'm glad you asked the question because I'm sure others out there were wondering the same thing!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@Vermicompost I started with a subpod mini, and added a Vermihut. Then 2 totes, now 3. I have a compost tumbler, that was colonized by worms, and ended up putting that into an Urban Worm Bag. After 2 years I still can't use up all my food scraps and coffee grounds, and I'm just 1 person.
Your worm bins are multiplying!! We need to form a worm bin addiction support group!! 😁 You must be eating very healthy!! I sometimes get worried that I'm going to run out of scraps and in comes my mom with a cooler full of food scraps!! Sometimes I think she shops for my worms and lets stuff go bad!
