I've listened to a handful of Boteachs speaking engagements. He's a bit more boisterous than the average...anyone. Homie got a tone and a surplus of volume to boot.
Not sure it's fair to liken him to anyone other than himself.

Religion is purely based on emotion. There’s no logic or fact behind it. If it’s one of the three dreaded Abrahamic religions then you’ve got to the deal with the “either you’re with me or you’re my enemy” mentality.

When stripped of your basic humanity for several months to a few years for acts that are deemed by and profited by religious, corporate interests with no recourse whatsoever will steer thinking in a certain direction. A person who lacks internal fortitude facing the all mighty us government most often turns to religion honestly or in most cases taking and having to pass religious education just to be released early. I came looking for this comment. Whenever I calmly answer my Christian friends/family questions with logic and sense they get mad and start yelling or crying while I'm still calm. They're mad they have no evidence to support their claims or belief in miracles. So they panic and get loud or angry.

The main problem I have with organized religion (and it is the organized aspect I worry the most about) is that it has a tendency to turn people who are otherwise quite willing to respect the freedom and autonomy of others into people that... don't. It's particularly noticeable in America, where our whole system of national values is rooted in individual freedom. It's long been claimed by conservatives in America that they are all for individual freedom, and by and large I think their actions support that claim. But when it comes to matters of religion, they are MORE than willing to do their level best to impose their beliefs on as many other people as possible, using any mechanism they can get their hands on. And THAT makes them a danger to our freedoms.

The moral case for God is "thou shall not kill?" and that this is absolute and sacred? That was a poor choice, and fairly empty morality - also pre-dated by the Code of Hammurabi which was not a revelation from Yaweh. (note, Hitchens gave him the out of "thou shall not murder," but it wasn't accepted or noted) After listing people killed by various dictators, the Rabbi quickly transitioned to "just war" rhetoric about Iraq ... but, didn't God say no killing? Is "just war" just harsh words?

Furthermore, the Bible itself in its underlying structure has purpose to the way it is constructed that goes far beyond the ability of ancient peoples just to make up from whole clothe while maintaining consistency of the text throughout. There are layers of structure and layers of meaning that derive from the language, from the arrangement of the words, from the arrangement of the letters, frequency, etc.

The worste ones, certainly. He didn't say all attrocities were. That's a different statement to make and would be dishonest. If you want to quibble about what pagans have done, quibble on. It's an argument for Judeo-Christianity. Christians who violate others do so while also violating christian tenets. Pagans who violate others do so while upholding pagan tenets. We're all human; but, the difference is that Judeo Christianity seeks to do better in spite of ourselves.

If the rabbi is so secure in his position, why is he shouting it?

havoc, Please expand on your knowledge of the tenets of paganism. What cultures have you studied, Celt, Greek, Roman, Saxon, Illyrian ?What tribes have you studied? What were your sources ? Or was your statement simply a vacuous assertion ?

Shmuley is extremely two faced on genocide in his statement at around 4 mins.

havoc, do you own a Bible ? It doesn't seem so . If you can't find inconsistancies, contradictions, historical inaccuracies, absurd claims, & plain wicked immorality, you haven't been reading. I'd be glad to give a you a massive list.

Funniest part of this is when the titanus rabbi was bellowing about evolution being a disproven theory that has no transitional forms to speak of, the camera goes to hitchens. Lol it is the closest to actual mind reading ive ever come to haha.

The books allowed into the anthology are allowed based specifically on their consistency. That you haven't studied the stuff in context is your problem, not ours. And when you guys run on at the lip over "inconsistencies," they always wind up to be issues where you don't know what you're talking about, haven't bothered with context, and take issue anyway. Seems that Critiques of the Bible are required to forget basic grammer and word use.

Seen a lot of Hitchens but must have missed this one until just now. I must say Christopher is in absolute top form here.
The rabbi? Hmmm...He seems to think that saying things louder and louder makes them more and more true.
Against Hitchen's calm, sophisticated, and articulate delivery the rabbi comes across as some type of crackpot nutjob...Not likeable, and not even a contest...
