Heart was good in the 80's, but they were absolutely amazing in the 70's.
The took a heavy metal turn in the 80's. The 70's were their folk rock days. Some amazing stuff was created during that period.
Sadly, they had to "sell out" to get a record deal in the eighties. The folk rock thing just wasn't getting it done anymore. It was their most commercially successful stretch though. Probably made a lot of money.
Amazing in the 70's.
Ann Wilson has some of the best pipes in the business.
THE best! IMO! Love Ann's voice!
Even better, her voice is still fantastic all these years later.
True that, even today she can still hit all the notes....
Yes she does!!!
And she is a medieval welder!
Dreamboat Annie is such an iconic album, also Dog and Butterfly and Little Queen, I love Heart
Don't forget Magazine!😁
So happy for you, Kel. Despite your ultra strict upbringing, you've become a warm & embracing person, who has a whole universe of music to discover. You're so cool, Rich. I was 6 when I went to the Heart/Santana concert, in 1978. Nancy Wilson inspired me to pick up the guitar. She was so immaculate on the acoustic and shredded the electric. Ann Wilson said she sometimes has a difficult time performing this song live. Her first love is still in her heart.
This album is required listening, and still part of the playlist
45 years or so later and this album still holds up!!!!!
I was totally the opposite, I'm a guy and grew up in a small town in the 70s riding my dirt bike, listening to great rock like this, drinking, getting high and reading Tolkien and Robert E. Howard Conan novels
Life'saBeach between the times when the oceans drank Atlantis.......
Ahh yes... a time undreamed of.
I'm from the Kansas City, Missouri area. In the late 70's there used to be multiple band tours that came to our stadiums. The one at then Royals stadium, was called Summer Jam, and the one at Arrowhead stadium was Summer Rock. I remember seeing Heart for the first time live and it was amazing.
I was lucky enough to see Heart live in Vancouver in a small drinking establishment when this song first came out. I remember standing right in front of the satage watching them perform. Will never forget it. Thank you for playing this one.
Magical album! The way the instruments come together with Ann’s vocals to create a timeless classic.
Kel is from Vancouver where Mushroom Studios was and where Heart recorded albums and was a very well respected studio. Why probably it was released in Canada first. They also did albums for BTO, Chilliwack, and other well know Canadian bands.
Yes it was recorded at Mushroom a legendary studio. A lot of folks here in BC thought they were a Canadian band back then even though they were from Seattle. I bought this album when it first came out and saw them in my little Canadian city on their first tour. Their bus broke down and they were late to arrive and only played about an hour, but it's still a cool memory!
And BRAVO for whatever you did with the sound. It eclipses practically everything uploaded to youtube!!
It must be a total and gratifying experience that Kel is going through. Her situation is as unique as I've ever been witness to. For someone with a trained musical background to hear these songs for the first time as a mature adult is unbelievably special. I kinda feel voyeuristic watching her reactions to what I consider timeless classic music. Very cool you two. Very cool...:)
I believe that story about not being able to listen to much music because of my family. But when I was old enough I listened to all kinds of different music.I love soft rock and love the blues.
Nancy was one of the two rhythm players; the lead guitar was by Roger Fisher.
Roger Fisher's epic guitar sound and playing skill brought this song to light.
You should react to Heart covering Led Zepplin's - Stairway To Heaven at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors. Powerful stuff.
Best Zep cover ever. I have listened to this so many times. Really brilliant.
I agree, amazing cover, certainly JPJ, Jimmy and Robert seemed to love it. I still get a lump in my throat every time I see Jason Bonham give the look heavenward at the end of the song, we all still miss Bonzo but it must have so special for Jason to honour his father that way.

Brought tears to Robert Plant & the rest of band's eyes...enough said.
@@pauldoerwang4879 Did you notice Jamhead David Letterman sitting next to Jimmy Page?
Yes Ann n Nancy Wilson😍 cmon do the kick.. I've seen them so many times. Nancy's voice is so beautiful n Ann is a rockin guitarist
Though Ann and Nancy Wilson are from just east of Seattle. Heart actually first made it big in Kel's hometown of Vancouver, BC! That is why DbA was first released in Canada. As for why, see the first 10 minutes of the first part of 'Heart, Behind the Music. At the link below:
ua-cam.com/video/Jqpgc1G_yY0/v-deo.html
I have seen Heart in concert over a dozen times. The first time being in summer of '77'!
Mmm hearing this song brings back so many memories of my childhood in the 70's. Rich - How many songs from the 70's had bongos and that electronic buzz going back and forth. I can remember sitting on the floor listening to this on the record player. No headphones. My parents love music and shared it with me. Heart, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Sam Cooke, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Supremes, everything. This was wonderful. Thank you!
I love the reverb at the ending, and the simultaneous up/down pitch of the guitars, my favorite parts.
Kel was forbidden this music. I believe it. I was forbidden, too. Devil music. Drug music. In fact, not even music, just noise. Couldn't listen to R&R till I left home at 15 in 1970. Whew. Freedom.
Saw Heart many many times!!!!they rocked out the best!! Best female singers and Nancy is the best female guitarist I’ve ever heard, then and now!
I am only a newbie to tour channel and I love it. Keep up the great work. Being Australian and an old bloke, almost 60yrs old, I may be able to suggest some Aus rock that you have possibly never heard but still awesome..
Heart is one of the most iconic rock bands that started in my hometown of Bothell, Washington. Such incredible energy, talent and drive. Ann Wilson, one of the greatest rock vocalist of all time. Nancy, her sister an amazing guitarist. And every band member, talented enough to have their own band! This band blows away ANY band today. This is true talent.
They're out of Bellevue but that's close to you.
GREAT show Heart wow great band..............
Great memories and thank you so much. Saw Heart several times and couldn't keep my tongue in my mouth. Sorry for the graphics but Anne and Nancy were so hot to watch. They were just really good musicians. Awesome!!!!!!!
Heart's live 1976 version of Crazy On You with the 2-1/2 minute acoustic guitar intro is awesome.
Magic Man had an impact on the music world in a similar way (but not to the degree) of the debut of Van Halen. There is so much going on in there and the guitar licks are so unusual that it riveted the attention of everyone in a cover band, including myself. A big feature of the song was one of the first instances of the use of an ARP Avatar guitar synth on record. Essentially a modified ARP Odyssey, it used a special pickup attached to the guitar and interpreted pitch as control voltages that the synth could process.
Avatars were notoriously finicky and you would constantly have to tweak with a tiny screwdriver for the thing to register correctly. Even the minute changes in corrosion of the guitar strings over the period of a day or two could throw it off. (I used to have one.) It was such a pain that they later brought in a keyboard player to handle the synth parts on tour. The original ads promoting the Avatar presented the synth as being stolen from the keyboard world as a divine gift to guitarists. It depicted Moses holding the unit in the air like the Ten Commandments. The funny part was that the unit was a complete bust, essentially being more of a golden calf than any sort of gift.
One other well-known band used an Avatar, but only in the studio: Led Zeppelin, for the horn parts with the song Fool in the Rain" on the album In Through the Out Door.
Sorry for your son Brother. Love y'all more than you know. Kel is to die for.
Ann wrote this song about Michaei Fisher the lead guitarist 's brother. They stared into each other's eyes and that was it she was smitten that is when she wrote the song.
I was 22 and could not get enough of this album.
Got to react to #Heart Barracuda. Ann's vocals in that song are particularly good and
the "galloping" guitar riff is top notch.
Yea.. just going through life,, walking in a store or just passing by a radio playing in the background,, you are bound to have heard this song as well as many others without knowing who or what that was
The Wilson sisters, from Vancouver, BC. Saw them in 75 at the old Montreal Forum. Opening act for Loggins and Messina. Heart was one of the most successful groups from the Northland.
..you guys are so fun! Have that album on reel to reel! lol have a great weekend!
My dad actually brought home an album by Heart in 1971. "Let's Spend the Night Together" was on it.
Dreamboat Annie fantastic debut Album. What a voice Ann Wilson has.
Roger Fisher killing it.oh and ACES HIGH!(LOVE THE HEADGEAR)
Ann and Nancy Wilson are two completely awesome human beings.
My all time favorite band.
And Kel is present at every performance close your eyes and you are there.
I went backstage@ ironmaiden in Houston in 86! Btw the drummer was the kool 1 . it's been so long i only remember Bruce Dickinson. I have bad seizures n they totally erase my memory!!!!😩😜
Thank you, from 2+ years in the near-future. May y'all be well 2+ years yet hence.
*AVIATOR GEAR* - check out the album jacket on Cream's "Fresh Cream". There might also be some "first reaction" candidates within.
Nancy Wilson: very early and prototypical shredder - but ... in slow motion. Amazing guitarist from day one (this album).
There’s a rumor going ‘round the Moody Blue community that the Magic Man is Justin Hayward, the singer songwriter guitarist of the Moodies. Deep Indigo blue eyes & drop dead gorgeous.
The aviator hat was giving me - Lori Petty in Tank Girl - vibes... Can't wait to see what else you react to. Like some of the more obscure instrumentals and songs of the 70's like Reunion - Life is a Rock (and the radio rolled me) or ELO - Fire on High...
Kel, as you were commenting on this, I couldn't help but wonder, have you ever heard of a classical piece played in a rock n roll style? If so how do you judge it? That is do you judge it by the classical sense of through the rock n roll style? Love the helmet. :-)
This, BARRACUDA , STRAIGHT ON and DOG AND BUTTERFLY are my favorite Heart songs.
Just discovered y’all and loved watching this! Magic Man was definitely one of my favorites, too. As a freshman in college when it came out, my roommate and I would play it over and over in our dorm room. Loved seeing Kel’s reaction. Thanks for this video! Awesome! Y’all are adorable. So sorry to hear about your son, Rich.
I saw Heart so early in their career that they opened for Brownsville Station, famous only for Smokin In The Boysroom. Nanaimo, BC
I love Heart, got to see them in concert in 1982 and heard them play on the Boston Common in the late '80s. They did go pop in 1985, used outside songwriters, had a makeover with big hair and made music videos for MTV. They sold tons of singles but felt they'd sold out. In more recent years they went heavier.
Ann Wilson is a great guitar player, but Roger Fisher is a *phenomenal* guitar player and is the one who played these soaring harmonic leads that you hear in their early songs.
I Love you guys! Keep on!
Heart started their careers playing a lot in Vancouver BC and Mushroom records is in Vancouver. I had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with them at many clubs around my area and met Ann and Nancy Wilson in the interior of BC, at the time they were changing their bands name to Heart and were selling T shirts with the heart logo on it! I will never forget that meeting and had no idea they would go onto be legends in music!
Nancy didn't join the band until after they got a record deal
Ah, brings me back to August 16th, 1977 at Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ during their "Little Queen" tour. I had center balcony seats, an unobstructed view. That was the day Elvis died and Heart dedicated Zeppelins' "Rock n Roll" to him in the encore.
If you haven't already have Kel react to "Crazy on You" from 1977, there's a number of videos here on UA-cam.
Hey folks tremendous song, enjoy your reactions and admire your strong relationship. Stay devoted and keep the tasteful commentary coming. Hey Rich , just a note about early Heart . Roger Fisher was primarily the man responsible for Heart's early iconic solos. thanks, Metal Head Joe.
Ann had a relationship with their Stage Manager(?), Michael Fisher.
Michael Fisher's brother, Roger, played lead guitar.
Roger and Nancy also had a relationship.
So brothers were in relationships with sisters and they were all involved in the band.
Both couples split up at the same time and the band changed lineups after the album "Dog & Butterfly".
The next album, "BeBe LeStrange", had the songs "Break" and "Even It Up" on it which are direct reflections of those broken relationships.
I did not know that. Thank you.
And Roger Fisher wrote Bebe LeStrange and no one is sure if those are Roger's gutar tracks on the album
Just discovered this darling couple. Love the music and watching Kels responses.
Such a sexy sound from Ann and the guitar play. Hot 70's stuff
Even it up is great song by Heart. Dream boat Annie is another great song.
This may be a little off topic, but you mentioned how well recorded the album was...and it made me think of my albums ( which Dreamboat Annie is one. I still like Little Queen more) But I have an album which I think is recorded beyond it's time that I wanted to mention, and that's Saga's World's Apart album. I think it's amazing with the variety of sounds and rhythms and how crisp it is.
I like how u guys do your reaction on the videos u don’t interrupt and do your comments at the end great job. some of them interrupt a lot and start talking about the vocals & maybe think they can do better but u guys don’t do they I like it keep it up👍🏻👌
FUN FACT: Lead singer Ann Wilson's guitar playing sister Nancy Wilson had a cameo in a well-known comedy movie. Next time you watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" pay attention to Judge Reinhold as he's driving around in his pirate uniform shortly after getting fired from his job.
Sitting at a stoplight, a cute young blonde (Nancy Wilson) pulls up next to him and she giggles at him.
He thinks she's flirting so he smiles back...but that's not what she's giggling about.
Check it out !!
We are here because you are as entertaining as the performers you react to.
Try also - from Heart’s Little Queen album - Sylvan Song / Dream of the Archer. Very beautiful and mystifying with mandolins and a long note sustained by Ann Wilson’s voice. You won’t regret it. Thanks for reacting to Magic Man.
Heart was my big idols between 1983-2001. I even have a platinum reward record for their 'Heart' record 1985.
I love the reverb ending of that song. Wow I totally forgot 80's songs! David Bowie's China Girl, A lot of songs from Foreigner Four album, ELO's sweet talkin woman, 70's.
Ann Wilson still has the pipes, if you get a chance go see them live!
pure nostalgia . i remember ive got this album for my 19th birthday in 75 and still wow
When you described Kel's "background", it kinda broke my heart a bit. I, too, came up in a household where raising a child was based on the '40's and '50's model....so I can somewhat relate (Peter, Paul And Mary were verboten, let's just say!). When hearing you touch on Kel's upbringing, I instantly thought of Green Day's "She". Kel might even like the song (all 2 minutes of it). The lyrics are simple but say so much. Great reaction! Saw these folks in '82 with John Mellencamp and am grateful that I did.
"Crazy On You" Showcases Ann's voice and Nancy's guitar prowess!
AGREED! There's a live version thats UNBELIEVABLE!! the THUMBNAIL is Nancy in a long yellow silk shirt playing her acoustic guitar!
The changes in this song are worthy of Queen.
I saw Heart live in the 1970’s. As a teenager, I fell in love with the Wilson sisters...and still am. Watch them do the tribute to Led Zep at the Kennedy Center. Amazing.
In an interview, Ann & Nancy said this was a true story about one of their previous managers. It rocks.
Y’all are great together!
I remember I was living in Portland when they started getting big in 1975. They used to play at the local clubs before we had to pay more to see them in concert venues. One of the great rock bands of the 70's before they stopped writing their own songs and went pop in the 80's. After the original musicians left, they were never the same.
Ann's pipes are right up there with Grace, Janis, Karen, etc. in the 70's
The 1977 live show is one of the best ever. Ann's "Barracuda" is the absolute best performance of her career bar none!
Little Queen is another excellent Heart album, with songs like Barracuda and Cry To Me.
Welcome back to the UA-cam chaos, Hope the Maiden concert rocked!, Always loved Heart, Badass women they were...cheers and rock ya later.
I was thirteen years old when this incredible album was released and as you may imagine, this song would put me in a trance like state.
The Heart song I would recommend is Mistral Wind from the Dog and Butterfly Album (1978)
Listen to Steve, Rich n Kel. Mistral Wind is so brilliant. And you’ve seen the earlier comments about the Kennedy Center honors when they did Stairway with Zep there to listen. no words are adequate!
Seeing them in August, can't wait!
In @ 1978 a mate got his first car and put a CB in it. So what did you do then was go out driving and using that wonderful technology. All of a sudden I had to come up with a name to use and as fate would have it this was playing on the Radio and I used it, never thinking about how sleazy it made me.. Ahh yoof
Love Anne and Nancy! Something about that song "Alone" and"Crazy on You" stirs me up
Saw Heart in the 70s, then again in 2019! AMAZING!
You should listen to this song from the Cal Jam 2 concert. The sound quality isn't studio like but Ann hits a note in that performance that will make your jaws drop.
As an aside, somehow i managed to see some of this performance back in the day when it aired on tv. I fell in love with Ann then. Saw them I guess 4 yrs ago now for the first time ever and I fell in love all over again. Best part of it was I got to share this experience with my wife. We have been together for 35 yrs now. I hope y'all reach that milestone too.
It's so wonderful that Kel Is getting to hear this timeless music for the first time.
I may have missed this in one of your previous videos but does Kel keep in contact with her parents and if so... do they accept her, with a lighter hand, now?
One of the first albums I've ever listened to (1980s early) and heard this song a million times. NEVER knew half of the lyrics. Hhahaaa!!! Thanks for posting.
One of my favorites - dog and butterfly. She might really enjoy that one also
I would so love to meet you guys. You seem like real laid back amazing people.
Wow! You guys are killing it tonight. I love the song selections.
When I was in college ('75 to '80), I used to go to the audio library and listen to Heart's Dreamboat Annie and Fleetwood Mac's Rumors over and over while I studied and did homework. Good Times!!!
She's SO CUTE with her little pilots hat on!!!
The first time I had my "FIRST TIME" was to this song when I was 16 years old!!!!!!!!
Loved your first time reaction - you guys are totally cool & so sweet - I love Heart & it is always fun to see what first reactions are - you guys are a cute couple & I enjoyed watching ya'll 👍👍✌❤😊
Always prefered Magic man above Crazy on you and Baracuda but they are great songs as well. The song dreamboat annie has a more dreamy sweet sound. Were hits in The Netherlands in 77.
I love that hat and goggles! Super cool!
Other Heart songs to listen to: Alone, Who will you run to?, Black on Black II. Also, Floor Jansen does an excellent cover of Alone.
