In this part I show you how I applied the ground cover on the hillside next to the canal. The realistic water is nearly finished. In part 5 some of the finer detail will be added.
the water surface is coming along very nicely, man. Respect ! Patience is a fine virtue, and the way you are building your lyout and the scenery on it, is absolutely great
Your work is fantastic, you have a great talent. I have watched many of your videos and they have inspired me in my new effort of my model railroad. Thanks again, looking forward to up coming videos.
Great series of vids Richard. I like the idea of layering the water with paint to give it more depth & variety. The embankment looks very impressive, I think that the extra effort you make in layering all the different textures of grass etc really shows up in the end result. All in all, brilliant. Looking forward to part 5. Cheers Ian.
Ian Martin TheSmokeyStokey Thanks Ian, one more layer of water and hopefully it will be done. Its looking good so far, I really like the reflections you get from the rest of the scene.
When you think back to the dual carriageway that was there before (which actually looked ok IMO) and then compare it with what you've created it really is a magnificent improvement. I love the look of the canal, particularly the depth and tone you've created and the reflections on the water surface really do bring the scene to life. Bloody marvellous work!
***** Thanks mate. I much prefer this to the motorway. When you stand about 4 feet away and look at both boards they flow together really well. The whole thing has come out much better than I expected.
Really enjoyed watching you do your canal just awesome as is all your videos about your layout , just sucks that I have to wait another week to see part five , am so looking forward to that . Regards Dave
Great video series. I have to admit that I have copied your way of using woodland scenic and it appears to work very well even for me. I have never used the foliage packets before but they are absolutely amazing, the purple colour is good for representing heather. Thanks
Love the canal scene, it's looking really good, much more fitting with the trains heading out towards the country and the allotments there. The water looks good too, I've not seen an awful lot, but definitely the most realistic I've seen.
I can only add to what others have already said, but great work on that scene. It really does look the part, and very inspirational to newcomers and experts alike in my opinion.
Hi Richard, its all but done in the station. All the tracks, except the 3 way are done. Just screwing the raised areas in place now and that will allow me to ballast up to the walls to get a neat edge. Pretty please with it all to be honest. Its taken me many hours and lots of glue, but it is secure and looks good. Platforms are secured in place too, screwed from underneath the boards into the wooden frame of the platforms. I shall remove platforms etc for weathering the tracks but just piecing it all back together to allow some trains to run for a while. I will try get an update done this weekend. My mind is on this stupid Scottish Referendum. Posted my vote, but I can see a silly YES vote win, god I hope we stay with the UK!!
I was thinking the foliage effects you used that could be stretched etc they would have looked good in small quantities on your canal bottom as with all canals there's always a weedy undertone, just a little afterthought but on the whole the scene really looks good, I'm just getting back into the hobby after many years and I'm so impressed with the detail on your layout :)
Superb Richard looks very good and realistic, for flock(the stretch out material)I use Heki Flor I use to use the woodland scenic but since I've used Heki Flor I've never looked back its expensive but a fantastic result used it on my video series 50 shades of green found this material from a guy called Richard Reid he's the guy who does the scenic work for Hornby catalogues and now has his own business building model railways his company is called(scenic model railways)superb site to go on. Kev
looking good. Just some things that i do. I use tea from tea bags as an earth base. I use 3M Spray Mount Adhesive on my trees to stick foliage to a green fine matting and it works very well. I will be using it when i get round the landscaping grassy slopes
Hiya mate just subscribed to your channel at last and just want to say a massive thank you your vids have been a massive help in something ive wanted to get back into for a long time keep up the good work canal scene looks great by the way
sorry i forgot. I was never satisfied with my canal. at one end there is now a fish tank underneath. I am thinking that a small, low powered pump could push water through a tube to the top of level 2. It will then flow down, trickle through the lock gates to level 1, along to the canal basin and eventually back int the fish tank. The water will always be fresh, flow will be controllable, when the pump is turned off, the canal will be dry! Will i ever get round to it?
Fantastic scenery work and great stage by stage explanation of the woodland scenic materials used for ground cover. Could you inform us how long in total the realistic water has taken to set and for how many layers used? Cheers, Matt.
The scene is coming on really well and the realism is growing nicely. Roughly how long would you reckon it has taken to go from the bare painted hill to where you are now?
it would look cool if you had like a boat or a canal boat slowly poking out the tunnel would make the canal look the part or you could put some people on the canal path either way its looking good
Love how you had the rat running around the track spur on the right at 4:00 minutes into the video. How do you do that? Love your videos, keep them coming. They are extremely helpful.
Looking fantastic, the flowers make a nice touch, good idea with making the water look murky too. Did you use Hob-e-tac on the tree armatures to make the trees? Cheers, Dan
Canal wins 100% over the motorway. Looks really good. Did you make the static grass applicator, if so did you do a "How too". If it is shop bought, what is the make? Barry. Devon
Hi Terry, firstly wanted to say nice work as always! Secondly did you make the static grass tool yourself, and if so is there any chance of a quick vid explaining how it was done? Cheers :)
Just wondering how you do the track in the sidings near the hill with the card running through. And could you give me a list of your turf and foliage e.t.c list that you have. Cheers, Harry
Where are the long fibres available? Haven't seen online anywhere. I might have to run through your old videos again. Anyone? UK US or pref AU but any source would be good.
Mm, mediocre, i suppose. Haa, just joking, very good sir! That foliage stuff is great, isn't it? As you've used PVA to successfully fix things down, it probably won't be needed, but Woodlands Scenic glue is good for that and it finishes matt as PVA doesn't. So that might be good for the future and if you water it down, you can use it like the cement in your sprayer. That may work out cheaper if you have a lot left to do and it will be a dual purpose product!
I love your model, been watching you for so long, ours you look at mine? I haven't done much recently, I just haven't seen things to do :( all help is great:) James!
The scene is coming on really well and the realism is growing nicely. Roughly how long would you reckon it has taken to go from the bare painted hill to where you are now?
Richard Tarr Difficult to say as filming the process adds extra time. I've probably spent about 8 to 10 hours over the past few weeks doing this area so far.
EverardJunction I appreciate that filming takes extra time although you make it look easy! I do appreciate the videos though which as a beginner I find very helpful.
Richard, you are an Inspiration! Excellent work, Well Done.
Regards John.

The scene looks wonderful, and has got me thinking about adding a canal to my n gauge plans.
It is looking fantastic - you make it look so easy.
Nice job, very impressive and detailed. Thanks for sharing.

Looks great, you've inspired me to go tackle the hillside I've been putting off for the last year! :)

Great video! I've really enjoyed watching this canal scene take shape. Some useful tips I can use when building my own layout!
Unfreakinbelievable! Awesome work :D
Very nice. Mixing is best and you have done a brilliant job of it.
Rob McCrain Thanks Rob
Boy are you setting a challenge for the rest of us to rise to :)
Its looking amazing
This episode was sponsored by, Woodland Scenics. :D They have some great products indeed.
Subscribed a while back, still happy I did. Great work.

I'm looking at my railway to see where I can put a canal now!
Cheers for the quick reply Richard I'll get mine on order
The music at the end reminds me so much of the Roland Davies sketch on not the nine o'clock news. Looks great man
Hiya mate just subscribed to your channel at last and just want to say a massive thank you your vids have been a massive help in something ive wanted to get back into for a long time keep up the good work canal scene looks great by the way

Regards Josh
8th Gear My next video is about the SD1. I'm still editing it at the moment, should go live towards the end of the week.
Fantastic scenery work and great stage by stage explanation of the woodland scenic materials used for ground cover. Could you inform us how long in total the realistic water has taken to set and for how many layers used? Cheers, Matt.
SandwichAshfordMR I'll do that in the next video as I may need some more layers first.
The scene is coming on really well and the realism is growing nicely. Roughly how long would you reckon it has taken to go from the bare painted hill to where you are now?
it would look cool if you had like a boat or a canal boat slowly poking out the tunnel would make the canal look the part or you could put some people on the canal path either way its looking good
nice one rich...the area is coming on now.

Glebe Road Junction Cheers Terry
Love how you had the rat running around the track spur on the right at 4:00 minutes into the video. How do you do that? Love your videos, keep them coming. They are extremely helpful.
Hi Richard looking good looking very natural cheers Kevin
nice!, one scene you could make by a canal is some children playing with a toy boat on it
Fantastic layout, but i'm newbie in this and I want to ask were you connect earth wire in the battery? Thanks. Continue the good work.
Looks really gud!!! The washes over the water look brill, almost like oil is sat on it?! Shud b really effective wen it dries, next yr :)
Looking fantastic, the flowers make a nice touch, good idea with making the water look murky too. Did you use Hob-e-tac on the tree armatures to make the trees? Cheers, Dan
TheMisterdan01 Hi Dan, I did use Hob-e-tac on the trees. I've also sprayed some with scenic cement to hold the foliage a little better.
That's a good idea, thanks for that. The Hob-e-tac looks like a really good product. I'll give that a go for my next lot of trees, cheers
Canal wins 100% over the motorway. Looks really good. Did you make the static grass applicator, if so did you do a "How too". If it is shop bought, what is the make?
Barry. Devon
OBowner Hi Barry. I made the applicator myself using some instructions I found on a railway forum years ago. I did do a video about it years ago.
I use Woodlands Soylent Green! Great Stuff!
Nice1 again rich
Hi Richard where do you get your woodland shakers from ,great video part 5 should be good
emoh8765 I get mine from hattons.
I think it looks good with one tree
Hi Terry, firstly wanted to say nice work as always! Secondly did you make the static grass tool yourself, and if so is there any chance of a quick vid explaining how it was done? Cheers :)
James W I made a vid a while back called static grass applicator which explains the mechanics of it.
EverardJunction awesome! I'll check it out thanks :)
Just wondering how you do the track in the sidings near the hill with the card running through. And could you give me a list of your turf and foliage e.t.c list that you have.
Cheers, Harry
where do you purchase all of your woodland scenics materials from ? All looks really good otherwise.
the model railway channel I get mine from hattons.
At the top of the bank you could use long grass to make it look over grown
Can u give me a list of those shakers and the codes what u use please
yes!
Where are the long fibres available?
Haven't seen online anywhere. I might have to run through your old videos again.
Anyone? UK US or pref AU but any source would be good.
Hey,
How do you get the clumped foliage to stick? I saw you just applying it after the static grass but never used glue?
I think the base might of still been wet from when he did the static grass or he could of gone round after and added some of the scenic cement
Kieran
Jeremiah Jefferson Bunyan I sprayed it with some scenic cement.
Kieran Allen Thanks
EverardJunction Thanks
what was the wire that u plugged into the slope for
Harry Hasek Its the earth wire for the static grass applicator.
Where do you get the shakers from?
Webb Hill I get mine from hattons.
Where do u buy the woodland scenic shakers???
Tom powell I bought mine from hattons.
Thank you , your layout is awesome

MotoCrazy66 Thanks, I've been meaning to try some of the scenic glue. I use pva most of the time.
are you going to put a boat in the canal
Looked good until overworked with the folige - makes it look less realistic
I love your model, been watching you for so long, ours you look at mine? I haven't done much recently, I just haven't seen things to do :( all help is great:) James!
