Wow! As a child of the 70's that row of shops was a blast from the past! As I mentioned in a previous video, I love the authenticity of the cracked and broken paving, so realistic!
What a fantastic video. Well worth the wait! I lived in South Ealing from 1950 to 1976 and my first full time job was at WH Smith in Ealing Broadway so I know the area really well. Reading everyone else’s comments has been a great trip down memory lane. Ealing has changed so much since those days. Bentalls and John Sanders were two big department stores in the town, long since gone now. I thoroughly enjoy watching your progress and I am learning so much from your building process. I purposefully left the station alone as I improved my skills working on 'easier' parts of the layout. Never build the focal point of a layout first. You'll be disappointed with it as other parts of the layout surpass it.

I think the reason I like watching these videos is because I am watching someone who is the total opposite of me. Although I would like to, there is absolutely no way that I would have the patience to do what you do. I would just want to get it built as quickly as possible. When you were messing around changing the canal, and the road layout, and the houses, and the scrapyard, and the track layout on the branch line, and the sidings and the scenery around the bridge at the other end of the layout I kept yelling at the screen "STOP CHANGING WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY BUILT AND GIVE US THE F##KN STATION!" Now you are there I feel I can relax! Please don't change it! Note to self... relax ... and chill... and look forward to the next installment! 😊

Having grown up in the 70's and 80's I thought I'd mention a few more shops that were popular, "Etams", ( teenager womens clothing), "Timothy Whites", "Mothercare", "Hepworths"(mens clothing), "Dixon's". Keep up the great work.
"I wasn't around in the 80s". In that short sentence, I suddenly felt very old indeed....but perhaps a bit smug at the same time for having been around in the 80s. Exceptional work once again and well worth the wait for this latest video. I do love it when a new Everard Junction video pops up.
@@EverardJunction I was lucky. My dad was a signalman so I spent most weekends with him in his signal box from 1975 to about 1980. The Upminster box had the Grays branch, so I used to hand the tokens over. Got me an invite to drive a Class 302 one Saturday on the branch line. All great memories, but I'm not sure my old grey matter could remember the details to the level of your superb work.
I don't want to say I audibly cheered when I saw this appear in my subscriptions feed, but I did. Can't wait to get into the video, it's always so much fun when you upload a new one. Your layout and your techniques never amazes to impress me, and I can only hope to ever reach your skill level.
Brilliant!! Platforms varied as much as the places that rails run through, up and down through the country. Weeds as well as ivy are great at covering up joins as well as the old staff crossing steps built into the platform edges. I remember taking a short cut from one platform to another, but split my uniform trousers from crutch to belt up the back, one night and worked a whole shift with my winter coat on. I have worked on real platforms where they didn't pay as much attention as you did on yours. Next you'll be running a scrubbing train or sandite to help the tracks. I once when laying sandite, needed to pass two signals at danger ( 1 failed ), protecting a junction and a well known slipping point. Now i could only pass 1 signal at danger, but you have to lay sandite at 20 mph. I slipped down the embankment, but the next day after five trains had slipped, i was given dispensation to pass 2 signals at danger, which prevented other slips.
As usual another interesting a fascinating update. My goodness this has brought back some memories as I was born in 1956 and lived right next to South Acton railway station. I thought I knew this area very well but when I checked my old stomping grounds I hardly recognized the area. All these new and very futuristic buildings along Acton High Street and continuing to Ealing Broadway and further afield. My goodness it has changed and for the better by the looks of it. Great update Richard. An important point for accuracy, is that with the Ladbrokes shop, you have to have a blank window, it was usually green, with no advertising on the window. The law well into the mid to late 90s was that you weren't able to see into a betting shop, and they weren't allowed to advertise on their windows, completely unlike the modern versions. The only indication of a betting shop was the name, like it would have had Ladbrokes licenced bookmakers over the shop, and the name of the shop manager over the door like pubs have. Looking great though, brings back memories with those shop names, don't forget a small independent pawn brokers on the opposite side of the street, and you could add a small private shop at the other end of the street, for a typical late 80s, early 90s feel lol. I remember going past William Hill near me, the glass frontage was covered in blue paint with the odd picture of sport on it…every time we passed I’d ask my Dad what was in there…and he’d just say “betting shop…” and that was it… Such a smash of nostalgia when I read your comment.
Absolutely! I seem to remember my local bookies had those multicoloured plastic streamer things so they could leave the door open in the summer whilst not allowing a view inside.
@@planetpeckham1 Correct actually I think they had them up all the time. Doors were usually glass from what I can remember. With the plastic curtians behind them, (lots of cigarette smoke also came out when someone left the shop as well lol)
If you can imagine yourself walking on those platforms, waiting for a train, getting on and enjoying the experience then I think this says how well the modeller has achieved the experience. I for one think I have stood on one of his stations at some point in my life. Just Fantastic and I am an engineer so I love all of the steps and processes.
Excellent stuff, as ever. Your Ladbroke's reminded me of when as a boy the barber in a parade like that did one cut and one cut only, with blunt shears hanging from the ceiling. Very often, my mum would take me into his shop, and then have to go across to the betting shop across the road and shout through the plastic strip curtain thing over the bookie's open door for Tommy (the barber) to come back to his own shop. So you need a scuzzy barber's in the parade opposite. 😀
@ 34:30 I actually worked in that ‘building monstrosity’ you mentioned at Ealing Broadway station 44 years ago when it was BBC Television Enterprises and we produced all the foreign versions of BBC shows 🙂
I am fascinated by the detail and realism you put into your layout. However watching this build come along I am learning about urban life in the UK during the late 80’s. I must say it is very different from my experience living in the Dallas, Texas Metro area. In the 80’s we were just starting to build a regional passenger rail and bus system. Dallas was the first large major city in the US to have long haul passenger rail service discontinued back in the early 70’s. However we did build large airports. The model for short haul regional airlines with hourly flights to cities within 500 miles began here. Our transportation system is freeways that we drive on in our big air conditioned cars and trucks. And yet it was a rail head that but Dallas on the map. So I am very intrigued by how the rail system has influenced the urban culture in the UK. Thanks for incorporating historical details in your layout.
Outside of London rail really has influenceD British cities, past tense! It's virtually useless for regular, reliable travel outside a handful of big cities. And even when visiting London I've had my fair share of comedy moments, drivers forgetting to stop where they're meant to, or else stopping and opening the doors while the station announcer frantically shouts "do not board! do not board!".
Great modelling, Richard. The grout platform surfaces look really nice. The track weathering is also superb. Amazingly, a handful of Happy Shopper branded stores remain, but most are now called Premier Stores. Thanks for some wonderful modelling!

I say it everytime. Wow!! Absolutely superb, Everard Junction update, cuppa, grab the biscuits, sit back and enjoy. Them shop fronts took me back to when I was a kid, so I guess I'm one of them blokes of a certain age too.😊. May I suggest a Woolworths, Co-Op or even a Wimpy. Funny how theres always a WH Smith's near a train station. Hopefully you can put a couple of Brutes on the platform with trainspotters sitting on them, that was a fairly common theme back in the day too. Thank you for sharing. Excellent.

Would be nice( and authentic) to add diesel soot stains to the overbridge, with it being low-ish. Correct alignment to all loco exhausts of course. Superb layout and great to see modern image with correct length trains. Excellent 👏🏼

Lovely job. I worked for 'Our Price' in 1989. Hell of a fun job. Then they were bought out by WH Smiths, and it went horribly 'Pete Tong'. 'Tandy' would be a good 1980's shop to have. Oh yes, Bejams was such an 80s store. I'll also add that WH Smith always seemed to be the huge corporate newsagents, doublesized stores in key high street locations as opposed to all the smaller corner shop style independent paper shops. I said it before on an older video, but something people forget about the 80s was how ubiquitous cigarette advertising was. For billboards, nothing sums up the time period more than a giant poster for ciggies which hasn't been legal (or socially acceptable) for years now. All your little newsagents on the layout would be covered with ads for them too.

That closing scene, shot from beneath the overbridge, is going to be very effective. With photography playing such an important role in E.J., I'm guessing there will be some detailing work under there in time.

Liking the period shop fronts. I think your ‘80s shoppers might want to grab a bite to eat in a Wimpy, and I recall a British Gas shop next to the Radio Rental in the high street I frequented in those years. Perhaps something for the other side of the street.
Happy Shopper was a national chain, that sort of superceded 'VG', 'Waitrose', 'Mace' and 'Fine Fare' mini-markets/newsagents. Other 80's period small shop logo ideas might be: 'Woolworths', 'Richer Sounds' (HiFi chain), 'Dorothy Perkins', 'Rumbellows', 'Currey's, 'Athena', 'MFI', 'Do-It-All', 'Tandy', 'Kwik Save', 'John Menzies', 'Somerfield', 'Radio Shack', 'Dixon's', 'Redifusion', 'Comet', 'BHS', ... Just off the top of the head. Not forgetting the one shopping chain that has outlived them all... The brilliant and ubiquitous - 'Co-op'.... . Love that 'scenic break'... Potentially so authentic. Can't wait to see what happens with the 'road to heaven' though...(lol). Great work as always.
I was thinking about 80's shops and you have to have a Woolies and a Victor Value, which was bought out by Tesco in 1986. Even a small Tesco store would fit. Even more obscure was Huckleberry's Burger bar, which was like Wimpey. Actually, I have just remembered that Dad worked at Ealing Broadway for London Transport. This must have been back in the 70s though.
I believe that Happy Shopper was an "Own Brand" owned by one of the large Cash & Carry chains used by small grocery stores etc, loving the update, thank you

Of all the excellent work and new stuff you've added, and all the hard work, the one thing that stood out to me were the blinds in the windows. I have seen many blinds, but those looked very realistic and added so much to the windows already and you have not added interiors or lights. I guess I am easily amused, but those blinds really popped there. Anyhow, I wondered how much the heat got you. Joyce and I spent the month of June int he UK and left, just before the first real heat wave hit, but even 27 in York and London at the end of June felt really hot there.
Looks great the surface of the platforms will look spot on once you have all the detail in place. It looks just how you would imagine in your minds eye.
Supasnaps was a great shop for photos. And Our Price too, god that's a trip down memory lane. Bought my first ever vinyl single from there. Adam and the Ants 'Antmusic'

A small point of accuracy I'd like to add is that usually a Boots the chemist shop spanned two shop front lengths I think. I've never seen a single unit Boots or WH Smiths (lots of items inside) unless they have them in London. Maybe you could also include a Public house of your own devising and naming somewhere on the layout. Great work.
Love the walk down memory high street, just a suggestion for another shop, Woolwoths and a shoe shop maybe, there was Freeman, Hardy & Willis or Stead & Simpson amongst others, also C&A was a popular clothes shop 😃
When I got a train set in the early 90's, it came with a Hornby casette tape with audio from a station, probably recorded at the same time your layout is set. It had muffled station announcements, diesels starting up and so on. If you can find it, or a digital rip, a bluetooth speaker could be hidden in the station to add a soundscape for the visuals.
Looking good and definitely brings back memories of the 80s. I grew up in Luton then Hatfield, often travelled to Watford (there used to be a huge Beaties model shop there) So can I suggest a Beaties, a greengrocer, a bakers of whichever chain there used to be in the area, and a Wimpy for future stores. As for the cloud backscene at the end of the shops if it’s not to far perhaps a day trip and take a photo from an elevated location and have that printed up, a 40x40cm print isn’t expensive and would really set off the scene. Carry on the good work, it’s been far too long. 👍🏻👍🏻🙂
Brilliantly done video! I really hope I can do a layout again in future. I'd a landscape oil painter, so I enjoy the technicalities of replicating effects and illusions! Some vertical strip blinds would look great in some of those windows as they were very popular back in the day (although I was born in '95) 😂
I'd love to see a clever bit of lighting installed under (and maybe even beyond) the scenic break to add to the illusion/illustration of the indoor part of the station. Never seen that on any layout yet.
Great work as usual, Richard. I've added some discarded lumber and newpapers to my layout recently. It makes the scene look more real, but it's hard for me to do as I'm an overly tidy person! You continue to inspire me with your work. Cheers from Wisconsin!

@@planetpeckham1 Correct actually I think they had them up all the time. Doors were usually glass from what I can remember. With the plastic curtians behind them, (lots of cigarette smoke also came out when someone left the shop as well lol)

If you can imagine yourself walking on those platforms, waiting for a train, getting on and enjoying the experience then I think this says how well the modeller has achieved the experience. I for one think I have stood on one of his stations at some point in my life. Just Fantastic and I am an engineer so I love all of the steps and processes.

Excellent stuff, as ever. Your Ladbroke's reminded me of when as a boy the barber in a parade like that did one cut and one cut only, with blunt shears hanging from the ceiling. Very often, my mum would take me into his shop, and then have to go across to the betting shop across the road and shout through the plastic strip curtain thing over the bookie's open door for Tommy (the barber) to come back to his own shop.
So you need a scuzzy barber's in the parade opposite. 😀
I was a kid in the 80s (I was born in 1982) and those shops are all pretty much what I remember from my childhood. Happy Shopper was life 🤣

@ 34:30 I actually worked in that ‘building monstrosity’ you mentioned at Ealing Broadway station 44 years ago when it was BBC Television Enterprises and we produced all the foreign versions of BBC shows 🙂
I am fascinated by the detail and realism you put into your layout. However watching this build come along I am learning about urban life in the UK during the late 80’s. I must say it is very different from my experience living in the Dallas, Texas Metro area. In the 80’s we were just starting to build a regional passenger rail and bus system. Dallas was the first large major city in the US to have long haul passenger rail service discontinued back in the early 70’s. However we did build large airports. The model for short haul regional airlines with hourly flights to cities within 500 miles began here. Our transportation system is freeways that we drive on in our big air conditioned cars and trucks. And yet it was a rail head that but Dallas on the map. So I am very intrigued by how the rail system has influenced the urban culture in the UK. Thanks for incorporating historical details in your layout.

Outside of London rail really has influenceD British cities, past tense! It's virtually useless for regular, reliable travel outside a handful of big cities. And even when visiting London I've had my fair share of comedy moments, drivers forgetting to stop where they're meant to, or else stopping and opening the doors while the station announcer frantically shouts "do not board! do not board!".
Great modelling, Richard. The grout platform surfaces look really nice. The track weathering is also superb. Amazingly, a handful of Happy Shopper branded stores remain, but most are now called Premier Stores. Thanks for some wonderful modelling!

I say it everytime. Wow!! Absolutely superb, Everard Junction update, cuppa, grab the biscuits, sit back and enjoy. Them shop fronts took me back to when I was a kid, so I guess I'm one of them blokes of a certain age too.😊. May I suggest a Woolworths, Co-Op or even a Wimpy. Funny how theres always a WH Smith's near a train station. Hopefully you can put a couple of Brutes on the platform with trainspotters sitting on them, that was a fairly common theme back in the day too. Thank you for sharing. Excellent.
Agree with a Wimpy, McDonalds were around but not in the numbers they are now. A Chippy would also be very close to a station.
Your attention to detail is brilliant. You are like a set designer for some top class Hollywood movie but only better. Keep it up as it will only get better and better. However don’t let it it take over as I know it would with me.

Would be nice( and authentic) to add diesel soot stains to the overbridge, with it being low-ish. Correct alignment to all loco exhausts of course. Superb layout and great to see modern image with correct length trains. Excellent 👏🏼

Lovely job. I worked for 'Our Price' in 1989. Hell of a fun job. Then they were bought out by WH Smiths, and it went horribly 'Pete Tong'.
'Tandy' would be a good 1980's shop to have. I spent an awful lot of money in my local branch. Always stocked stuff you never knew you needed.

Bejams which is now Iceland, Safeway which is now Morrisons or Woolworths would be good brands for a double store.
Oh yes, Bejams was such an 80s store. I'll also add that WH Smith always seemed to be the huge corporate newsagents, doublesized stores in key high street locations as opposed to all the smaller corner shop style independent paper shops.
I said it before on an older video, but something people forget about the 80s was how ubiquitous cigarette advertising was. For billboards, nothing sums up the time period more than a giant poster for ciggies which hasn't been legal (or socially acceptable) for years now. All your little newsagents on the layout would be covered with ads for them too.

That closing scene, shot from beneath the overbridge, is going to be very effective. With photography playing such an important role in E.J., I'm guessing there will be some detailing work under there in time.

Liking the period shop fronts. I think your ‘80s shoppers might want to grab a bite to eat in a Wimpy, and I recall a British Gas shop next to the Radio Rental in the high street I frequented in those years. Perhaps something for the other side of the street.

Other 80's period small shop logo ideas might be: 'Woolworths', 'Richer Sounds' (HiFi chain), 'Dorothy Perkins', 'Rumbellows', 'Currey's, 'Athena', 'MFI', 'Do-It-All', 'Tandy', 'Kwik Save', 'John Menzies', 'Somerfield', 'Radio Shack', 'Dixon's', 'Redifusion', 'Comet', 'BHS', ... Just off the top of the head. Not forgetting the one shopping chain that has outlived them all... The brilliant and ubiquitous - 'Co-op'....

I was thinking about 80's shops and you have to have a Woolies and a Victor Value, which was bought out by Tesco in 1986. Even a small Tesco store would fit. Even more obscure was Huckleberry's Burger bar, which was like Wimpey. Actually, I have just remembered that Dad worked at Ealing Broadway for London Transport. This must have been back in the 70s though.

Of all the excellent work and new stuff you've added, and all the hard work, the one thing that stood out to me were the blinds in the windows. I have seen many blinds, but those looked very realistic and added so much to the windows already and you have not added interiors or lights. I guess I am easily amused, but those blinds really popped there. Anyhow, I wondered how much the heat got you. Joyce and I spent the month of June int he UK and left, just before the first real heat wave hit, but even 27 in York and London at the end of June felt really hot there.
Looks great the surface of the platforms will look spot on once you have all the detail in place. It looks just how you would imagine in your minds eye.
Supasnaps was a great shop for photos.
And Our Price too, god that's a trip down memory lane. Bought my first ever vinyl single from there.

A small point of accuracy I'd like to add is that usually a Boots the chemist shop spanned two shop front lengths I think. I've never seen a single unit Boots or WH Smiths (lots of items inside) unless they have them in London. Maybe you could also include a Public house of your own devising and naming somewhere on the layout. Great work.

Love the walk down memory high street, just a suggestion for another shop, Woolwoths and a shoe shop maybe, there was Freeman, Hardy & Willis or Stead & Simpson amongst others, also C&A was a popular clothes shop 😃
When I got a train set in the early 90's, it came with a Hornby casette tape with audio from a station, probably recorded at the same time your layout is set. It had muffled station announcements, diesels starting up and so on. If you can find it, or a digital rip, a bluetooth speaker could be hidden in the station to add a soundscape for the visuals.
I'm a Hayes and Harlington boy so just up the road from some of you. Love your layout, process and attitude. Keep the vids coming.

Looking good and definitely brings back memories of the 80s. I grew up in Luton then Hatfield, often travelled to Watford (there used to be a huge Beaties model shop there)
So can I suggest a Beaties, a greengrocer, a bakers of whichever chain there used to be in the area, and a Wimpy for future stores. As for the cloud backscene at the end of the shops if it’s not to far perhaps a day trip and take a photo from an elevated location and have that printed up, a 40x40cm print isn’t expensive and would really set off the scene.

Brilliantly done video! I really hope I can do a layout again in future. I'd a landscape oil painter, so I enjoy the technicalities of replicating effects and illusions! Some vertical strip blinds would look great in some of those windows as they were very popular back in the day (although I was born in '95) 😂
Great update Richard. You need a WIMPY in your shops.
I'd love to see a clever bit of lighting installed under (and maybe even beyond) the scenic break to add to the illusion/illustration of the indoor part of the station. Never seen that on any layout yet.
Great work as usual, Richard. I've added some discarded lumber and newpapers to my layout recently. It makes the scene look more real, but it's hard for me to do as I'm an overly tidy person! You continue to inspire me with your work. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Cheers James. I find the grout sets like rock with PVA and use it for lots of areas. Doesn't shrink or crack over time either.
