  • Since I originally built the scrap yard a number of details to enhance it have become available. In this video I set to dismantling some of the scrap yard. I then make various changes and improvements with plenty of paint and details added along the way.

This is the most fantastic scrapyard I have ever seen!
I would like to see him model some steam loco scrapping with some cut boiler tubes and wheels etc.
However, this is a specialist yard and outside his modern image period, so as ever, he was right to cover the chaotic car yard more likely to be seen next to a 70s or 80s lineside.
Some people don't appreciate that Richard is probably the highest IQ and most accurate modeller out there!

It's my favourite layout, the one closes to what I would build if I had the time, money, space and skills to do so but I did see another one which I initially didn't realise was a model railway so I guess that one was the most realistic one I've seen (can't say I remember what one it was though!)

I work in a large scrapyard - your one is spot on. Despite the fact that Health and Safety has increased, there are still areas of the yard where I work, that look like your miniature. Tyres, white goods, oversized chunks of metal, piles of chain link and Harris fencing, all lurk in corners of my workplace. A common sight also, are heaps of car engines, destined to be run through the frag mill. Cable drums, too, and old farm machinery. Railway track. Tons of the spring clips used to fix rail to sleepers. Scaffolding poles, in various lengths, rusting chains of all sizes.
The sort of job in which you'll see something you've never seen before, every day. Yes, really. I love your yard and your eye for detail. I can state, in all honesty, yes, yes there are places that look like that, and just out of sight, there is a shear, a pre-shredder, a sorted metals shed, and a frag mill.
    Thank you. 👍👍👍

I remembee going to a yard with my dad when I was about 5, with all the stacked-up brown 70's cars! There was a yard in Mildenhall around 2006 that still let people wander in and out to find what they could find. We wanted a back seat for a Mini, but there was an XJ-S nearby and I got the crazy idea of trying to cram those seats into a Mini. Neither happened, in the end!

Love watching the progress on the layout,so realistic.
Some detail ideas for the scrapyard. Normally scrap is paid on weight. A vehicle weighbridge would be near the office, also a free standing weigher for smaller items. You could use the old i beams as a pile of scrap metal along maybe with an area of cable ready to be stripped. Scallywags used to nick it off building sites and scrapped no questions asked back in the day lol
Any way just thinking out loud, keep up the great work👍

Nicking cables is still common today, there's an urbex video in the abandoned high-tech HQ of a defunct F1 team, and you can see along all the ceilings and down the walls where the wiring's been pulled out.

We actually hid the dosh in hubcaps on certain cars! So the old banger in the corner contained at least £2k, which with todays inflation would probably be £12k! 🤔

So great to see the next instalment, i used to drive class 415/416 1951 epb units over the Atlantic Lines to Victoria and going past Brixton there was a junk yard to the left, so much like yours. Also its hard to forget the actual scale, as so realistic, until the "Arm of God" appeared. As usual the attention to even, unseen details, that having watched previous videos of yours we all know and appreciate being there make it all the better. Absolutely brilliant. I personally reckon this is the best layout in recent years. I wonder how you ever have any time to do your real work, in the full scale world. More please.

So as I see the fascia boards, I am imagining them as a cross section of the ground beneath the scene. It would be fun to paint them as layers of the soil and rocks or whatever would be below. You could have some utility pipes or something visible in a few places. You could even do some fun stuff like show skeletons, or fossils!!! You could make a hole in the fascia board and make a scene like a tomb of some sort with grave goods and such. I know I am getting loopy now, but its late here right now! Cheers! 😉👍

The scrapyard looked great to begin with. But the changes make all the difference.
One thing you mentioned previously about concrete on the block of flats staying relatively clean differs a little from my memories growing up in barnehurst/erith in the 1980s and 1990s. The Dartford power station would cover concrete and paving slabs in lots of black dots as if someone had scattered pepper everywhere. Consequently none of the concrete ever looked particularly clean or uniform. It I think was partly due to it not being a constant use station, firing up at higher demand spikes. I don't think you need to change much however unless your modelled area has a power station nearby like that part of South East London.
some great progress has been made, particularly like the peak and the 59 videos. The dogfish video in relation to la's totally awesome, it has been suggested that elbow grease available from home bargains and one below works well. I plan to give a try some time on a bunch of old warhammer models I acquired and see how well it works, possibly in conjunction with an ultrasonic cleaner.

back in 1980ish, I brought an 18-month-old Rover SD1 2600, and an engine liner slipped wrecking the complete engine. Cos the the car has 25k on the clock Rover washed their hands of the trouble. After a search, I located an engine in a local scrap yard and I can confirm your model is pretty representative. Come at 2 o'clock the man said 'hold on a minute I have to load these two cars onto this lorry' and underneath them was my engine. IT was pulled out of the mud and a lot of brown stuff came out of it. Got it home cleaned it up and measured the crank bores etc and it measured up bang on nominal.

Great update on the scrap yard. I have 2 suggestions for decorative purposes which you may like.
    (1) why don't you put a small led light under a bonnet of one of the cars and a guy giving the impression he is tinkering with it.
(2)Old Oil or petrol adverts hanging up on the fence by the river fading into the yard and also one hanging on the wall of the office building.
Again great viewing but I would livd to see a full Ariel view of your layout somewhere. I'd say it would be amazing to see.

I do believe should you decide to do more scrap yard lightning it needs to be a lighted utility pole at the hinged side of the access gate. This would be where a night guard or his ever watchful attack dog would view thieves making unlawful parts removals.
Also the entire yard, outside the garage, needs to be well lit.

The one thing I would say is the track boundary fence on the model is very neat. The scappies have bent and damaged the real fence then patched it by wedging corrugated sheeting between cars and the fence posts.

With all the runoff coming down that hill into the yard that would be one muddy place. The tire tracks are super appropriate. They should be mostly from the forklift though. What would be super cool is a rail spur with some gondolas for shipping prepared iron. Then have a couple of dudes cutting industrial scrap into prepared. Then finish it off with an excavator with a thumb or a crane with a magnet Loading the gondolas. But opinions are like buttholes. We all have them.

It's been interesting watching the scrapyard evolve over time

Perhaps a yard light at the side of the arch? I'd have put the office one on the corner .
I gave seen poles but they're fed with overhead cables. They'd certainly , definitely not have had them professionally installed with underground electrics

That white Ford Capri is taxed and was only MOT`ed on the 26th July , I think you best add a police car and a police man pointing at it lol

I always like your changing the scene. I think a man with a working cutting torch would look good, some rats, foxes

You could have added some cut of ends, and sides of cars in line with the edge of the board to infer that the car yard extends beyond the edge of the board.
Also, a scrapyard with no puddles?
Just a couple of suggestions for you.

Maybe think about changing the fence alongside the canal as well because realistically the corrugated panels would be on the inside of the fence.

Very nice work. If your tool boxes were in the states there would be stickers ( decals) all over them and girly calendars hanging on the backside...Again, very nice project in total..

As someone who worked in the motor trade and spent a lot of time in and around this type of premises, I can say with confidence that you have nailed it, spot on. 70s to early 90s before they changed to the more clinical "safer" car dismantling yards. I have no interest in model railways apart from viewing them on youtube if I stumble across on them, like I have with this one. I just felt I had to comment as it brought back many memories.

Have plenty of those toolboxes at work, still somewhat useful as long as you don’t need to carry them far.
I’d love to see some motorsport, whether it’s the scrapyard owner having a smashed up stock car in one corner or the garage next door having an Escort for some rallying. Nothing high level, just a celebration of the days where you could have a small business and afford to go play in the forests at the weekend, and build a competitive car cheaply and easily.

I’d have the cars right up to the edge of the scenic board at the front of the scrap yard…it would better imply rows and rows of cars out of shot…

I think the Blue Door Mini needs a reprieve! I don't think its time is up just yet! Would be nice if it was near the doors, as if the driver was finding yet another one for the other side!

It need the yard's owner. Dressed in a obvious cheap suit with a tie that totally does not fit with the suit. At least that was how those typical "i think i am a big rich businessman" would look like in the Netherlands back those days. Of coarse he ride a old Mercedes Benz which is just not bad enough to be part of the scrap yard. Oh, and don't forget his eternal cigar.

Maybe a pole light near the derelict lorry by the handrail would add a bit of interest and illuminate, dimly, other aspects of the yard
