I was crying all the way up to the second (dancing) set, my feet were killing me. Once the classics hit, then it was epic! Thought Giant was awesome with everyone joining in.
I’m I writer. I went but nearly didn’t go. So glad I did. Made me realise what a massive influence Matt was on me back in my 20s. I too had a tear in my eye as DC Collard nailed this. And the finish with Giant! Epic 😍
"Weak men lie. Strong men cry" (from Where Do We Go When We Die - Ensoulment). Just saw them in Salt Lake. I didn't cry, but I had shivers all over, several times -- and sang along with all the lyrics of his old songs (which still feel so fresh and relevant!). And yes: I realized at a very deep level how influential Matt was on my life from about age 18 into my early 30s... I am over the moon happy that he's back!!
I saw this tour with my partner, who is new to the the.she bought a copy of soul mining on the strength of this song.loved it and I'm so glad she saw it live.she plays piano and it blew her away.
For 35 years, this has always been my 'warm up" song for almost every pivotal life moment. For exams, job interviews, the morning of days my 3 kids were born, project bids, big events, the most important days. Music has power, and for me, this track is the best confidence charge-up and has never let me down. Thanks Matt...and Jools. ps. I love the annecdote about this track and lunch in your book.
How can this performance be over 30 years ago? And may I add that in the last 40 years this has been played thousands of times by me and this piano solo never fails to make me happy.
Seen the The on mind bomb tour, Glastonbury and ensouled in September this year. Love the The since school days when a friend gave me a cassette with soul mining one side and burning blue soul on the other.never looked back, with me since I was a teenager in the 80s.
Just saw you perform in Denver on Tuesday...I was in tears most of the show...your music means so much to me. Your words and your voice have always touched my soul and comforted me throughout my life...I am so grateful for you Matt!🤗
I wonder if this is the only time Jools has played on a tune on his TV show where he's also played on the actual record? [Not including the songs he's done with his own band or Squeeze].
Saw The The 2 nights ago in Auckland. D C Collard on keyboards. Brilliant.
One of the best songs ever written.
One of my favourite songs from one of the best albums of the eighties - and Jools piano solo is amazing !
For one of the best of all times. 😉
As a 52 yr old chap, I'm not ashamed to say that I was weeping throughout this track during the Alexandra Palace show. Anyone else have that reaction?

Long Shadows and High Hopes, Matt's autobiography @@johnsdea
I saw Matt in 93 (with Johnny Marr) at Liverpool Academy, superb gig from the Dusk album, ahh...memories of youth.
An all time fave and anthem for my life! Jools Holland’s piano on the song on the Soul Mining album always mesmerising.

Love it.
Sounds just as great now as it did in 1987 (and just learning it came out in 83, what a concept)

Superb!
Jools did you proud, my god he can play and then some, like The The.

👏👏👏🌹🌺
Cool sounding band.
Quality!
If I am not mistaken Jools Holland was originally playing piano on the LP studio version of that song (?)
He did indeed.
I preferred Later With Jools Holland without a studio audience. Just musicians trying to impress their peers. Tremendous.
UAUU
Who was the personnel in this band make up please?
Dave Palmer on drums, Jared Michael Nickerson on bass, and Keith Joyner on guitar, DC was on the tour with them.
@testvideo44 thanks Will 🙌🏼
@testvideo44 always remember David Palmer as he used to be in ABC
